<p>The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) - a US audit watchdog led the inspection, part of an agreement signed between Washington and Beijing last year. A team was dispatched to Hong Kong last month to review 2022 audit reports of some high-profile Chinese stocks listed on US stock exchanges, the publication claimed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Chinese firms such as Tencent Music Entertainment Group, NetEase Inc., Didi Global Inc, among dozen others are&nbsp;next on the list to be inspected.&nbsp;</p>

<p>PCAOB&nbsp;board Chair Erica Williams had hinted about such audits back in May when she said the agency&nbsp;expects fieldwork to continue this year. She added the goal was to&nbsp;review companies that account for 99 per cent&nbsp;of the market value of US-listed firms that are audited by Hong Kong and China firms.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Last year, after more than a decade of demand by the US regulators to audit papers of US-listed Chinese companies, the two nations arrived at a middle ground and signed the pact. If the deal was not signed, nearly 200 Chinese companies, including tech behemoth Alibaba could have been banned from US exchanges.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Prior to the signing of the pact, Beijing did not allow American authorities to examine the audit books saying they were national secrets and hence cannot be shared with third parties.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>In 2020, under former president Donald Trump, the Holding Foreign Companies Accountable Act was passed which forced SEC to take a tougher stance against US-listed Chinese companies. It eventually forced Beijing to concede to the regulators' demands.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

PCAOB board Chair Erica Williams had hinted about such audits back in May when she said the agency expects fieldwork to continue this year. She added the goal was to review companies that account for 99 per cent of the market value of US-listed firms that are audited by Hong Kong and China firms. Why the audits? Last year, after more than a decade of demand by the US regulators to audit papers of US-listed Chinese companies, the two nations arrived at a middle ground and signed the pact. If the deal was not signed, nearly 200 Chinese companies, including tech behemoth Alibaba could have been banned from US exchanges. Prior to the signing of the pact, Beijing did not allow American authorities to examine the audit books saying they were national secrets and hence cannot be shared with third parties. In 2020, under former president Donald Trump, the Holding Foreign Companies Accountable Act was passed which forced SEC to take a tougher stance against US-listed Chinese companies. Earlier this week, the chip war between the two countries took a new turn after China imposed export controls on two rare elements, essential for the manufacturing of semiconductors. Washington returned the favour with news reports claiming that the Biden administration was planning to restrict Chinese access to US cloud-computing services. Before the tit-for-tat, China had banned Micron - the biggest US memory chipmaker, claiming that the company had failed its network security review. <p>A statement was issued on Wednesday by Lieutenant General Alexus G. Grynkewich, commander of the Ninth Air Force. Three MQ-9 Reaper drones were engaged by three Russian fighter jets "in actions that violate established norms and protocols," said the statement, as quoted by Reuters.</p>

<p>"These events represent another example of unprofessional and unsafe actions by Russian air force&nbsp;operating in Syria, which threaten the safety of both US and Russian forces," Grynkewich said, calling on Moscow to "cease this reckless behaviour."</p>

<p>The Pentagon had released a video in March depicting&nbsp;a collision between a Russian fighter jet and a US Air Force MQ-9 Reaper drone in international airspace. The collision had caused the drone to crash into the Black Sea.</p>

<p>The MQ-9 Reaper drone, which is primarily deployed for intelligence gathering, can be armed with up to eight laser-guided Hellfire missiles, underscoring the risk of these confrontations.</p>

<h2><strong>UN urges extension of Syria cross-border aid mechanism</strong></h2>

<p>An official of the United Nations visited Syria's Idlib on Tuesday and urged a 12-month extension of a cross-border aid mechanism to rebel-held, quake-hit region. The appeal has come just days before the current six-month arrangement is due to expire.</p>

<p>"There is no substitute in size and scope to the UN cross-border resolution if we want to meet the needs of the most vulnerable people in northwest Syria," said David Carden, the United Nations deputy regional humanitarian coordinator for the Syria crisis.</p>

<p>"It's a joint message that you're hearing from the UN, the NGOs and the communities themselves in northwest Syria about the need for a 12-month renewal of the cross-border resolution," he told a press conference at a World Food Programme (WFP) warehouse in Sarmada.</p>

<p>The mechanism is renewed by a vote of the Security Council. It allows vital UN assistance to reach people living in rebel-held northwest Syria without navigating areas controlled by government forces.</p>

<p>It was renewed in January and is set to expire on July 10.</p>

<p>Carden underlined the need for a 12-month extension and said such an extension will "ensure that aid will continue to flow during the desperate winter months. It will ensure that early recovery programmes can be implemented."</p>
