Israeli and Lebanese leaders finalised a U.S.-brokered maritime demarcation deal on Thursday, bringing a measure of accommodation between the enemy states as they eye offshore energy exploration.

Leaders from Lebanon, Israel and the United States have all hailed the deal as "historic" but the possibility of a wider diplomatic breakthrough remains slim.

As a result, there was no joint signing ceremony: Lebanese President Michel Aoun signed a letter approving the deal at his palace in Baabda in the presence of Amos Hochstein, the U.S. official who mediated the accord.

"We have heard about the Abraham Accords. Today there is a new era. It could be the Amos Hochstein accord," said top Lebanese negotiator and deputy parliament speaker Elias Bou Saab, referring to the 2020 U.S.-brokered normalisation of ties between Israel and the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid signed separately in Jerusalem, saying the deal was a "tremendous achievement" that had produced Lebanon's de facto recognition of Israel.

"It is not every day that an enemy country recognises the state of Israel, in a written agreement, in view of the international community," Lapid told his cabinet in broadcast remarks.

But Aoun later said the deal was purely "technical" and would have "no political dimensions or impacts that contradict Lebanon's foreign policy".

Lebanon does not recognize Israel's right to exist and still considers itself at war with its neighbour, with laws barring contact with Israeli officials.

Lower-level delegations from each country headed to the United Nations' peacekeeping base at Naqoura along their contested land border, which has yet to be delineated.

There, the delegations entered the same tent, each standing on a side of a table, and submitted their signed copies of the deal to U.S. officials and their new coordinates for the maritime border to the U.N., officially bringing the deal into force, an Israeli official and a Lebanese source told Reuters.

"I hope it will serve as a confidence-building measure that promotes more security and stability in the region and economic benefits for both countries," said the U.N.'s Special Coordinator for Lebanon Joanna Wronecka.

POLITICAL MILESTONES

The accord comes days ahead of major political milestones for both Israel and Lebanon.

Aoun's term is set to end on Oct. 31 and political sources say he was keen to seal the deal as the crowning achievement of his six years in office.

Israel holds elections on Nov. 1, its fifth in less than four years.

Hochstein said the accord should be adhered to even if officials change on either side and the United States would continue to play a guarantor role to ensure it remains in force.

"If one side violates the deal, both sides lose," he said.

The accord removes one source of potential conflict between Israel and Iranian-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah and could help alleviate Lebanon's economic crisis.

The long-standing status quo on Taiwan has been rejected by China, according to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who also reiterated the belief that Beijing is moving more quickly to annex the island.

His comments come after Taiwan projected increased pressure on the diplomatic front and Chinese President Xi Jinping won an unprecedented third term.

According to Blinken, the four-decade status quo, in which the US only recognises Beijing while providing the island with arms for self-defence, has "helped to make sure there wouldn't be a conflict between the US and China over Taiwan."

"What's changed is this -- a decision by the government in Beijing that that status quo was no longer acceptable, that they wanted to speed up the process by which they would pursue reunification," Blinken told an event at Bloomberg News.

China has decided on "coercion and making life difficult in a variety of ways on Taiwan in the hopes that that would speed reunification, but also holding out the possibility, if that didn't work, of using force to achieve their goals," Blinken said.

The workers at Amazon, the world’s largest retailer, have been pushing back with sporadic protests and strikes across the United States in order to improve working conditions and wages. This also comes amid allegations that the retail giant is conducting harsh crackdowns on unionisation efforts by employees, said a report by the Guardian.

Earlier this year, an Amazon employee Matt Litrell was distributing union fliers outside a warehouse in Campbellsville when the local police were allegedly called by one of the managers for accusing him of trespassing on company property.

However, the officers eventually left him as he was not on Amazon’s property. Litrell claims the incident amounted to an illegal-intimidation charge which he later filed with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), said a media report.

Similarly, two workers in East Point, Georgia were fired from Amazon which they claim was in retaliation for their filing a petition and delivering it to the management. The petition in question sought higher pay and an increase in the minimum wage at the warehouse and had reportedly garnered over 300 signatures. Brandon Calloway and his co-worker were terminated two days later and they have since filed a complaint for unfair labour practice with the NLRB over the firings.

This comes as workers have alleged that the company is conducting crackdowns on unionisation efforts while they have retaliated with protests and strikes. The conditions of Amazon workers and their unionisation movement have garnered attention worldwide however the movement has suffered quite a few setbacks including a recently lost vote at a warehouse outside New York.

Citing similar incidents across the US, the report by Guardian says that many employees have walked off, held strikes and filed several lawsuits against the retail giant demanding higher wages and improved working conditions.

“I watched them change some processes that made things harder for us, but it made things faster for them, and I watched more and more of my co-workers getting injured,” said an Amazon employee, Sara Fee. This is what inspired her to demand improvements, said Fee, adding that every person working at the company is easily replaced when they are seen as a liability.

Amazon has denied the recent allegations and in a statement to the Guardian said, “We don’t believe there is any merit to these claims filed with the NLRB, and look forward to presenting the facts as that process moves forward.”

They added that they value employee feedback and are investing “$1 billion over the next year to permanently raise hourly pay for frontline employees and we’ll continue looking for ways to improve their experience.”

Reports suggest that Amazon has been able to fend off major labour unions since it was first founded in 1994, especially in the US. In 2020, it came under scrutiny when media reports suggested that the retail giant’s human resources department had been monitoring employees’ listservs which were reportedly the hotspots for worker activism.

A couple of weeks after Hong Kong refused to sanction a superyacht belonging to Russian oligarch Alexei Mordashov, South Africa has toed a similar line. Reportedly, the country will allow billionaire Mordashov to dock his yacht, named 'The Nord' in Cape Town. "South Africa has no legal obligation to abide by sanctions imposed by the US and EU," said Vincent Magwenya, spokesman for President Cyril Ramaphosa. Magwenya added that Mordashov was not under any UN-sponsored sanctions and thus South Africa wasn't required to impose any restrictions on him. "South Africa's obligations with respect to sanctions relate only to those that are specifically adopted by the United Nations." Read more: Weekend Special: Who is a Russian oligarch? On Wednesday, the aerospace giant, Boeing Co. reported a loss of $3.3 billion citing problems with its defence business, supply chain disruptions as well as regulatory hurdles in its commercial jet unit. The company has also reported an increase in revenue by four per cent from last year to $16 billion.

In this quarter, Boeing has generated $2.9 billion in free cash which it says will keep on track for a positive free cash flow by the end of 2022. The US-based aerospace giant said that its losses deepened in the third quarter due to these difficulties and at least $2.8 billion worth of charges related to defence programmes, including its military refuelling tanker and Air Force One replacement jets.

While the company was making some improvements, it continued to face challenges with a series of engineering, manufacturing and regulatory problems it encountered since the crashes of two Boeing 737 Max jets which collectively claimed the lives of over 300 people, said a report by the Wall Street Journal.

“Nearly every industry is navigating a broad supply chain, inflation, labour and macro-economic challenges – and we’re certainly no different. We’re realistic about the environment we face and are taking comprehensive action,” said Chief Executive Dave Calhoun in a letter to his employees. He added, “turnarounds take time,” and said, “we have more work to do” and went on to reiterate his confidence in the team.

This loss has also been attributed to supply chain disruptions and its effect on the company’s commercial jet business which is facing delays in the delivery of 737 jets. Additionally, Boeing is also facing regulatory hurdles with its latest 737, MAX 7 and MAX 10 models which are yet to receive certification from the US regulatory bodies by the end of the year.
