On Wednesday, the United States Federal Reserve raised interest rates again making it the fourth straight increase of 0.75% in a bid to combat inflation in the country which remains at a four-decade-high.

In a statement, the central bank said, “Inflation remains elevated, reflecting supply and demand imbalances related to the pandemic, higher food and energy prices, and broader price pressures,” while reiterating its commitment to returning inflation to its 2% objective. This comes after the two-day meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC).

The interest rate affects the cost of borrowing and investment in the economy which the Federal Reserve has been increasing since March in a bid to slow the economy down and bring down the soaring inflation in the country. This rate hike marks the central bank’s sixth consecutive increase just this year.

The policy decision set the target federal funds rate in a range between 3.75%-4% which is the highest since 2008. The Fed’s policy tightening has sparked a debate about its impact on the US and world economies, additionally, many fear that any further hikes could stress the financial system or even trigger a recession.

“Ongoing increases in the target range will be appropriate,” said the FOMC, indicating that they are “highly attentive” to the risks inflation poses which means that there could be further hikes in the future. This comes as the rate of inflation is at least triple the central bank’s target which has led them to increase rates marking the fastest rounds of increase since the 1980s.

Fed Chairman Powell: chances of ‘soft landing’ for economy have ‘narrowed’

Federal Reserve Board Chairman Jerome Powell addressed a news conference after the closing of the two-day meeting and said that the “ultimate level” of the central bank’s benchmark policy rate is higher than previously anticipated. Furthermore, chances for the so-called “soft landing” for the economy have “narrowed” but are “still possible”, said Powell.

While investors have supposedly been speculating about the 75-basis point rate hike, they had been anticipating a decrease in the rate hikes after its meeting in December. The man accused of attacking the United States senior politician and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul Pelosi, has pleaded not guilty on charges including attempt to murder and so on, in a San Francisco court, on Tuesday. This was the suspect’s first court appearance since the incident took place on Friday.

The accused, David Wayne DePape’s attorney and San Francisco deputy public defender, Adam Lipson, speaking to the reporters outside the court said that there are a number of factors that need to be accounted for in his client’s defence ranging from his “vulnerability” to “political misinformation” and mental state.

Following the hearing, Judge Diane Northway of the Superior Court in San Francisco also denied DePape bail, who is also to remain in custody at least until a formal detention hearing is held.

According to reports, DePape has been arraigned under the charges of attempted murder, assault, burglary, elder abuse, false imprisonment and threatening a US official. Court documents show that he was planning to hold Nancy Pelosi hostage and break her “her kneecaps” if she “lied” to him.

The court filings also said that the prosecutors detailed the attack and said that DePape’s intention “could not have been clearer.” The San Francisco District Attorney, Brooke Jenkins in the document wrote about how the accused “forced his way into the Pelosi home” with the intention to take House Speaker Nancy Pelosi hostage who is third in line to the presidency, to “seriously harm her”.

The prosecutors have also called for a prison sentence of 13 years to life, based on the state charges while DePape’s attorney, Lipson said, “we deny the allegations.” The court filing also said that DePape allegedly told officers and first responders that was done with the “lies coming out of Washington DC” and that he didn’t want to hurt Paul Pelosi but was on a “suicide mission”.

It added that when the police arrived minutes later, they saw the two struggling with the hammer after which the intruder grabbed the hammer and hit Pelosi with it over the head. US President Joe Biden has called on oil and gas companies to use their record profits to lower costs for Americans and increase production, or else be ready to pay a higher tax rate. Speaking at the White House on Monday, Biden said that while such companies are making money, Americans are paying a bomb to fill up their car tanks.

The remarks came days after US oil goliaths ExxonMobil and Chevron announced record profits, proof of how the industry has benefited from a rise in crude prices following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The oil industry “has not met its commitment to invest in America and support the American people,” Biden said. They’re not just making a “fair return”, but they’re making “profits so high it is hard to believe,” he added.

“Their profits are a windfall of war,” he said, referring to the conflict ravaging Ukraine. He further said that these companies have a responsibility to act.

“I think it’s outrageous,” he said. Biden said that if they passed those profits on to consumers, gas prices would register a fall of at least 50 cents.

He threatened that if they fail to do so, they should be ready to pay a higher tax and other penalties.

“If they don’t, they’re going to pay a higher tax on their excess profits, and face other restrictions,” he said. “It’s time for these companies to stop war profiteering.”
