In light of North Korea's ongoing missile launches, the United States and Japan are conducting a combined military exercise with the American aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan in the vicinity of Japan, the Japanese defence ministry announced on Saturday.

On Thursday, North Korea launched two short-range ballistic missiles into the ocean with Japan as their target. The launch was the first since Pyongyang flew an intermediate-range missile over Japan on Tuesday and the sixth in the past 12 days.

"Amid an increasingly severe security environment surrounding Japan, including North Korea's repeated ballistic missile launches, Japan Self-Defence Forces and U.S. Armed Forces have been conducting a bilateral exercise," the ministry said in a statement.

The combined exercise, in which a Japanese destroyer is taking part, has been going on since October 1st, according to the announcement. It was unclear when it was supposed to end.

Taiwan's government said on Saturday that Taiwanese semiconductor firms place "great importance" on following the law and that they would abide by new U.S. export restrictions designed to stifle China's chip sector.

The administration of President Joe Biden's guidelines, which were unveiled on Friday, contains a provision to cut off China from specific chips produced anywhere in the globe using American machinery, greatly extending its reach in an effort to halt Beijing's scientific and military advancements.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the largest contract chipmaker in the world and a significant supplier to businesses like Apple Inc., is based in Taiwan, a country that produces a lot of chips.

Taiwan's economy ministry stated in a statement in reaction to the U.S. declaration that Taiwanese businesses adhered to the law.

"Taiwan's semiconductor industry has long served global customers and attaches great importance to compliance with laws," it said.

According to the ministry, the government remains in regular communication with manufacturers and encourages them to invest in the expansion of their factories and deliver goods to markets across the world for technical advancement.

TSMC refused to comment on the American regulations, claiming that it was a quiet time before its quarterly reports the next week. Prior to the announcement of its earnings later this month, the smaller competitor United Microelectronics Corp. similarly declined to comment.

A man who was carrying a huge kitchen knife went on a stabbing rampage around the Las Vegas Strip in the US before being taken into custody on Thursday, leaving at least two people dead and six more injured, according to authorities. Three of the injured were rushed to the hospital in critical condition, while the other three were stable, according to the police.

The suspect, who is not from the area, has been described as a man in his early 30s. On Thursday about 11:40 a.m., calls to 911 on the north end of the Strip reportedly started coming in.

He allegedly informed a woman that he was a chef and that he intended to take pictures with some of the showgirls with his knife. But when the group rejected the man's offer, the woman continued, he started stabbing individuals.

The oldest living dog in the world, Pebbles, has passed away. She was 22.

According to Guinness World Records, the four-pound toy fox terrier passed away on Monday from natural causes just months before her 23rd birthday. Pebbles passed away in the company of her owners, Bobby and Julie Gregory, in their South Carolina home.

In a news release, Julie Gregory said, "She was a once in a lifetime friend, and it was our joy to have had the blessing to have had her as a pet, and family member."

Pebbles was born in New York on March 28, 2000. For the second time this week, a bus from Texas dropped down roughly 50 migrants outside Vice President Kamala Harris' apartment at the Naval Observatory in Washington, DC on Thursday.

Many of the migrants, who included men, women, and children, informed NBC News that they were from Venezuela. They were spotted transporting their belongings in tiny white bags.

Victor, a young man, claimed that he travelled through "the jungle" before landing in Texas and that he was fed on the bus and treated "quite nicely." He claimed he is looking for work but does not have a specific destination in mind. The bulk of the migrants on the bus told NBC News that they also intended to travel abroad.

International humanitarian nonprofit SAMU First Response had volunteers on site to help the migrants.

Since then, thousands of migrants have entered New York, Washington, Chicago, and other cities, causing officials in those areas to scramble to set up a support system for them.

Abbott initiated the migrant busing scheme to so-called sanctuary communities and was imitated by DeSantis, who recently chartered two flights bringing around 50 migrants from San Antonio to Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. Abbott also dispatched two buses of migrants to Harris' area last month. A class-action lawsuit has been launched by migrants who took part in the trip against DeSantis and other state officials on the grounds that they were the victims of fraud committed for political advantage.

Democratic governors whose states are impacted by the strategy have denounced Abbott and DeSantis' behaviour. Last month, after standing before the media to criticise Abbott's handling of the almost 500 immigrants bused to Chicago, Illinois Governor J.B. Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, also demanded that DeSantis and Abbott's acts be looked into by the Justice Department.

According to a report, General Electric Co is laying off workers at the onshore wind unit, after informing employees in North America, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, on Wednesday about the cuts. Reuters cited four sources familiar with the move to say that these layoffs are partly due to the company’s plans to “restructure and resize the business”.

Furthermore, they might also downsize their workforce in the upcoming days in Europe and the Asia Pacific. This comes as the industry is facing low demand, high costs and supply chain delays, said the report. The company has also confirmed that they are “streamlining” its onshore wind business citing market realities but refrained from commenting directly on the aforementioned layoffs.

According to sources, the cuts will affect at least 20% of the US onshore wind unit's workforce, which is hundreds of employees at the company. The GE Renewables spokesperson also emailed the following statement to Reuters, “These are difficult decisions, which do not reflect on our employees' dedication and hard work but are needed to ensure the business can compete and improve profitability over time.”

The report indicates that among GE’s renewable businesses onshore wind is the largest, as of the end of 2021, it employed 38,000 people worldwide. However, the onshore wind unit has reportedly been suffering due to inflation and higher costs of raw materials, as well as supply chain pressures.

The US has been GE’s most onshore wind profitable market but it is faced with uncertainty since last year following the expiry of renewable electricity production tax credits. This has reportedly hit consumer demand and adversely affected the unit's revenue this year.

The report has also attributed this to increased competition, supply chain disruptions due to the Covid-19 pandemic and soaring metal prices worsened by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. These aspects have made it difficult for companies like GE to make a profit despite more companies and the government pushing for renewable energy as a way to tackle climate change, reported Reuters.

This has reportedly pushed GE to prioritise its onshore business as it plans to turn its energy businesses, including renewables, into a separate company by the year 2024. The company sources also told the media that the onshore business is working on reducing fixed costs which they estimate could save at least some hundred million dollars in 2023.

According to sources, the cuts will affect at least 20% of the US onshore wind unit's workforce, which is hundreds of employees at the company. The GE Renewables spokesperson also emailed the following statement to Reuters, “These are difficult decisions, which do not reflect on our employees' dedication and hard work but are needed to ensure the business can compete and improve profitability over time.” The report indicates that among GE’s renewable businesses onshore wind is the largest, as of the end of 2021, it employed 38,000 people worldwide. However, the onshore wind unit has reportedly been suffering due to inflation and higher costs of raw materials, as well as supply chain pressures. ALSO READ: IMF chief urges global policymakers for timely action as global recession risks rise The US has been GE’s most onshore wind profitable market but it is faced with uncertainty since last year following the expiry of renewable electricity production tax credits. An Iranian American and former UNICEF official, Baquer Namazi, who has been detained in Tehran for over six years on spying charges has been released. The United States has previously called the charges against him baseless. Notably, he is also one of the four citizens whose freedom was demanded by Washington in the context of the 2015 nuclear deal with Tehran.

On Wednesday, the Iranian media posted footage of Namazi boarding a plane out of Tehran and said, “Mohammad Baquer Namazi, who had been released from prison a few days ago, left Iran today”, but did not announce where he is going. Later that day, Namazi landed in Muscat and Oman’s government announced his arrival in a tweet, indicating that Iran has allowed him to leave for medical treatment.

On the other hand, the former UNICEF official’s lawyer said that he is released from Iran “after more than 6.5 years of illegal detention”, this includes the time he was in jail as well as the period when he was barred from leaving the country.

“After a short layover, he will be leaving Oman and heading to Abu Dhabi”, said the human rights lawyer representing the Namazi family, Jared Genser. According to reports, the Iranian American will get undergo surgery to clear out “severe blockage of his left internal carotid artery (ICA)” which puts him at a “very high risk” for a stroke.

The US has been pushing Iran to release Namazi, his son and two other Americans, this is amid efforts to revive the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and major powers. Namazi’s son Siamak was also detained by Tehran. In 2016, the former UN official was convicted of “collaboration with a hostile government” and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

His 51-year-old son was also convicted in 2016 on the same charges and was released from Tehran's Evin prison on Saturday on a one-week renewable furlough but he was barred from leaving the country.

In a statement released by the Namazi family’s lawyer, Babak Namazi, Baquer Namazi's son, expressed gratitude for his father's release from Iran but also sorrow that his brother could not leave the country.

“While getting my father out of Iran is incredibly important, today is also bittersweet. My brother Siamak, as well as Americans Emad (Shargi) and Morad Tahbaz, remain detained in Iran and our nightmare will not be over until our entire family (and) the other Americans are reunited with their families,” the statement read. Tehran releases Iranian-American Baquer Namazi after over six years of detention

On Tuesday, Solomon Islands foreign minister Jeremiah Manele revealed that the country had initially refused to sign the United States government’s much-touted Pacific partnership deal until “indirect” references to China were removed from the agreement. The deal was meant strengthen Washington’s ties with at least 14 Pacific nations and included provisions for increased cooperation on maritime security, climate change and economic development.

The remarks by Manele were the first time that Solomon Islands publicly acknowledged the concerns it had with the draft of the agreement. “There were some references that put us in a position where we’ll have to choose sides, and we did not want to be placed in a position where we have to choose sides,” Manele told reporters in New Zealand's Wellington.

According to reports, the final draft of the pact had a small section on security with broad language that did not particularly mention China, but specifically condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. However, when the foreign minister was asked during the press conference if the text was referring to Beijing, he responded by saying “indirectly.”

He went on to say that the initial draft had some references that they were “not comfortable with”, however after further negotiations and discussions the officials were able to “find common ground”. The Solomon Islands minister is currently on a visit to New Zealand where he met with his counterpart Nanaia Mahuta, in Wellington.

While it was unclear as to which section of the draft was the point of concern for the island nation, a report by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) news said that a provision which read that the nations “consult with one another closely on security decisions with regional impacts” later was removed from the final draft of the declaration.

On the other hand, a report released on Wednesday, by a think tank in Australia alleges that the Chinese Communist Party has tried to attempt to undermine the Pacific island nation’s relations with the US and Australia. They have done this by spreading false narratives through local media and the use of social media channels in the Solomon Islands, said the report by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, reported the Associated Press.

A new image shows that an asteroid which was deliberately struck by NASA’s DART spacecraft, last week, left a comet-like trail of debris stretching thousands of kilometres. According to reports, the image was taken two days after the asteroid had been crashed into by the probe and was captured by a telescope in Chile.

On September 27, NASA indicated that they had successfully crashed the DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) spacecraft into an asteroid at the speed of 22,500 kph. This was an attempt by scientists to examine the possibility of nudging any asteroids that threaten Earth in the future. They are still working to establish if they have succeeded in their endeavour and if the asteroid’s trajectory has been altered due to the crash.

The image was taken two days after the collision, by astronomers in Chile using the Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope (SOAR). Reportedly, the comet-like trail goes on for more than 10,000 km and it is expected to get longer before it disperses completely.

“It is amazing how clearly we were able to capture the structure and extent of the aftermath in the days following the impact,” said astronomer Teddy Kareta, one of many involved in the observation from the Lowell Observatory.

According to Michael Knight, from the US Naval Research Laboratory, the trail of debris would be monitored in the upcoming weeks and months. He added, "Now begins the next phase of work for the DART team as they analyse their data and observations by our team and other observers around the world who shared in studying this exciting event."

The scientists will determine whether the mission was successful by observing the changes to the orbit of the 160-metre asteroid that was crashed by the DART probe and was named, Dimorphos, around another asteroid Didymos. The telescopes on Earth will keep an exact measure of the two-rock or binary system.

Huawei, one of the major names in global tech companies may be evading US sanctions through a little-known start-up in China. USA blacklisted Huawei, a Chinese company, in 2019 viewing it as a military and economic threat. The blacklisting meant that Huawei's ability to acquire Americam semicondutors and using American technology to make chips was severely restricted.

But now, the Chinese company may be trying to circumvent the sanctions and acquiring components required to make microschips, said a report in Bloomberg.

As per the report, a startup named Pengxinwei IC Manufacturing Co (PXW) has placed orders for such components. The startup is based in Huawei's hometown of Shenzhen. Huawei is reportedly providing support to PXW to set up a semiconductor manufacturing unit. What's more, a former Huawei executive is running the startup.

USA blacklisted Huawei in 2019 and even pressed allies like UK and Japan to take steps to eliminate Huawei's presence from their tech sphere. Because of this, there are obstacles for Huawei to import components from these countries.

PXW however, may not face such hurdles. Bloomberg said that the company may be able to acquire components from Japan with lesser hassles that what Huawei would have to go through. In a statement mentioned in the report, PXW said that it had inked deals with suppliers and intends to start production in 2025. It did not mention who would be its clients but it is being expected that Huawei will buy most of the output.

Huawei may be evading US sanctions through a small start-up: Report

The Colorado baker who won a partial Supreme Court victory after refusing to make a gay couple's wedding cake on religious grounds ten years ago is contesting a second judgment that his refusal to make a cake commemorating a gender transition violated the state's anti-discrimination legislation.

On Wednesday, a lawyer representing Jack Phillips urged Colorado's appeals court to reject last year's decision in a lawsuit brought by a transgender woman, primarily on procedural grounds.

In order to commemorate her gender transition, the woman, Autumn Scardina, called Phillips' suburban Denver cake store in 2017 and asked for a birthday cake with blue icing on the outside and pink frosting inside. Christian witness Phillips said during his testimony at the trial last year that he did not believe that one could alter their gender.

The verdict was incorrect, according to Jake Warner, a lawyer for Phillips from the Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative Christian legal advocacy group. According to him, forcing Phillips to make a cake with a message that conflicts with his religious convictions would violate his right to free speech since it would require him to say something he does not believe.

Judge Timothy Schutz noted Phillips’ wife initially told Scardina the bakery could make the cake before Scardina volunteered that the design was meant to celebrate her gender transition.

John McHugh, one of Scardina's attorneys, claimed that she merely asked the bakery to sell her a cake like they would any other customer, not for the bakery to support her cause. He claimed that the information a client provides to Phillips when he is baking a cake cannot determine whether or not Phillips sells it to that person.

Outside of court, Scardina and Phillips discussed the bigger concerns at play. The "dignity of LGBTQ Americans and Coloradans and the rule of law," according to Scardina, were at issue in the case. Phillips claimed he was fighting for everyone's ability to follow their consciences "without fear of retribution" from the state.

In 2018, following Phillips' refusal to make a cake commemorating Charlie Craig and Dave Mullins' 2012 wedding, the Supreme Court held that the Colorado Civil Rights Commission had violated the anti-discrimination law against him with anti-religious bias. The judges criticised the committee for improperly disparaging Phillips' religious convictions.

US: Colorado baker fights ruling over gender transition cake

For the first time on Thursday (October 6), Canada's Supreme Court will hear a Canada-US asylum pact to decide whether the US can be considered a "safe" place for people seeking refugee status.

The outcome will determine whether Canada can trust that the US will treat migrants properly or if Canada can take care of people who'll be turned away from the borders.

The hearing will majorly focus on the Safe Third Country Agreement (STCA), a pact between the two countries since 2004 for every migrant that is necessary for people to request protection in the first "safe" country they reach.

Defending refugee lawyers stated that the outcome of the hearing will determine the migrant's future, as few migrants were previously imprisoned in detention during the winter.

Canada has designated the US as a "safe third country" as it maintains high human rights standards.
