Jeffrey Sachs, Columbia University’s professor, was on Bloomberg TV on Monday to talk about the Ukraine conflict.

"The destruction of the Nord Stream pipeline, which I would bet was a US action, perhaps US and Poland," Sachs, director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, told Bloomberg TV.

But his remarks triggered a strident reaction from the host, Tom Keene, who intervened saying, “Jeff, we've got to stop there,” adding, “Why do you feel that was a US action? What evidence do you have of that?'”

Former US president Donald Trump has yet again made his way to the headlines, but this time it's not him but a book that has brought him the attention.

The book 'Confidence Man,' written by New York Times journalist Maggie Haberman and published on Tuesday (October 4), covers Trump's life from his days as a New York business tycoon to his presidency.

The book is based on information from nearly 200 sources, including his aides, and even includes info from his own interviews.

However, in response to the launch and the hype, Trump, taking it to his social media platform Truth Social, said this book has many made-up stories with "zero-fact checking."

The following are some shocking revelations from 'Confidence Man':

Flushed documents in 'toilet'

Haberman's book alleges White House staff discovered that the toilet was clogged with some documents believed to have been flushed by Trump when he was in office.

It was also found that Trump tore documents related to the Presidential Records Act.

The former president is already under investigation by the Department of Justice for keeping a few government records at his residence even after leaving office.

Trump wanted to fire his daughter and son-in-law

The most major claim in the book is that Trump wanted to remove his daughter Ivanka and Jared Kushner, his son-in-law, from their positions. Both were senior White House aides. In his meeting with the chief of staff, the chief advised him to talk to both of them, but Trump never spoke to Ivanka and Kushner, and they both remained part of the White House until the end of Trump's presidency.

Scared of dying from coronavirus

Despite several measures to stop the spread of COVID-19 in the US, Trump's position at the White House was declining due to the virus. He later tested positive for Covid.

The book stated that Trump was scared of dying from Covid. He wrote that he asked his staff to take off their masks and advised New York's governor to not mention this on television.

"Go wild, do anything" to overturn the 2020 election

It was anticipated by many that Trump would lose his presidency to Joe Biden, which he did, but Trump asked the New York City mayor and his attorney to take charge of his campaign and go wild and do anything to gather people in his favour ahead of the elections, BBC reported, citing the book.

Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei blamed the United States and Israel for nationwide protests that erupted after custodial death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. This is Khamenei's first public statement on the issue the protests over which have rocked the Islamic Republic for nearly a month now.

"I say clearly that these riots and the insecurity were engineered by America and the occupying, false Zionist regime, as well as their paid agents, with the help of some traitorous Iranians abroad," said Khamenei.

Mahsa Amini was taken into custody by Iran's notorious morality police over 'improper' attire. Amini was pronounced dead on September 16

Amini's death resulted in biggest wave of protests in Iran in three years.

In his comments, Khamenei said that police must "stand up to criminals" and added that "whoever attacks the police leaves the people defenceless against criminals, thugs, thieves".

"The death of the young woman broke our hearts," said Khamenei. "But what is not normal is that some people, without proof or an investigation, have made the streets dangerous, burned the Koran, removed hijabs from veiled women and set fire to mosques and cars".

The Iranian regime has regularly described protesters as 'rioters' and has sought to paint the protests as something that detrimental to Iranian society. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi's recent address to the nation was no exception.

Concern grew about a crackdown overnight on students at Tehran's prestigious Sharif University of Technology where, local media reported, riot police carrying steel pellet guns used tear gas and paintball guns against hundreds of students.

Iran's science minister, Mohammad Ali Zolfigol, came to speak to the students in a bid to calm the situation, the report said.

US: Man sent for grocery shopping by wife wins lottery of $190K, intends to distribute money amongst family

Former CIA director and retired four-star army general David Petraeus warned on Sunday that if Russian president Vladimir Putin uses nuclear weapons in the nation, the US and its allies would destroy Russia's troops and equipment in Ukraine as well as sink its Black Sea fleet.

Petreaus said that he had not discussed the anticipated US response to a nuclear escalation from Russia with national security adviser Jake Sullivan, even though administration officials claim that this response has been frequently expressed to Moscow.

In response, he said, "We would lead a Nato-as-a-whole action that would take out every Russian conventional force that we can see and identify on the battlefield in Ukraine and also in Crimea, as well as every ship."

The alert comes days after Putin made comments that many people regarded as a threat to escalate relations between Russia and the west into a full-scale war.

When asked if the use of nuclear weapons by Russia in the Ukraine would include the United States and NATO in the conflict, Petreaus responded that such an event would not fall under the provisions of Article 5 of the alliance, which calls for a collective defence. Despite the fact that Ukraine is not a member of NATO, Petreaus claimed that a "US and NATO response" would be appropriate.

Also read | Zelensky says Ukrainian soldiers' success 'not limited to Lyman', claims forces liberated Kherson towns

Petreaus admitted that it may be possible to interpret the risk that radiation might reach NATO nations covered by Article 5 as an attack on a NATO member.

“Perhaps you can make that case,” he said. “The other case is that this is so horrific that there has to be a response – it cannot go unanswered.”

Yet, Petreaus added, “You don’t want to, again, get into a nuclear escalation here. But you have to show that this cannot be accepted in any way.”

Nonetheless, with pressure mounting on Putin after Ukrainian gains in the east of the country under last week’s annexation declaration and resistance to mobilization efforts within Russia mounting, Petreaus said Moscow’s leader was “desperate”.

“The battlefield reality he faces is, I think, irreversible,” he said. “No amount of shambolic mobilization, which is the only way to describe it; no amount of annexation; no amount of even veiled nuclear threats can actually get him out of this particular situation.

“At some point there’s going to have to be recognition of that. At some point there’s going to have to be some kind of beginning of negotiations, as [Ukrainian] President [Volodymyr] Zelensky has said, will be the ultimate end.”

But, Petreaus warned, “It can still get worse for Putin and for Russia. And even the use of tactical nuclear weapons on the battlefield won’t change this at all.” Still, he added, “You have to take the threat seriously.”

According to CNN, Senator Marco Rubio, the top Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Putin had two options: build defence lines or retreat and lose land.

Former CIA director and retired four-star army general David Petraeus warned on Sunday that if Russian president Vladimir Putin uses nuclear weapons in the nation, the US and its allies would destroy Russia's troops and equipment in Ukraine as well as sink its Black Sea fleet.

In response, he said, "We would lead a Nato-as-a-whole action that would take out every Russian conventional force that we can see and identify on the battlefield in Ukraine and also in Crimea, as well as every ship." The alert comes days after Putin made comments that many people regarded as a threat to escalate relations between Russia and the west into a full-scale war. Also read | Zelensky says Ukrainian soldiers' success 'not limited to Lyman', claims forces liberated Kherson towns Petreaus admitted that it may be possible to interpret the risk that radiation might reach NATO nations covered by Article 5 as an attack on a NATO member. “Perhaps you can make that case,” he said. “The other case is that this is so horrific that there has to be a response – it cannot go unanswered.” Yet, Petreaus added, “You don’t want to, again, get into a nuclear escalation here. But you have to show that this cannot be accepted in any way.” Nonetheless, with pressure mounting on Putin after Ukrainian gains in the east of the country under last week’s annexation declaration and resistance to mobilization efforts within Russia mounting, Petreaus said Moscow’s leader was “desperate”. At some point there’s going to have to be some kind of beginning of negotiations, as [Ukrainian] President [Volodymyr] Zelensky has said, will be the ultimate end.” But, Petreaus warned, “It can still get worse for Putin and for Russia. And even the use of tactical nuclear weapons on the battlefield won’t change this at all.” Still, he added, “You have to take the threat seriously.” According to CNN, Senator Marco Rubio, the top Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Putin had two options: build defence lines or retreat and lose land. Rubio asserted that he thought it "very likely" that Putin could target supply routes used by the US and its allies to reach Ukraine, including those located inside Poland. Although the senator accepted the nuclear threat, he stated that the main concern was "a Russian attack inside Nato territory, for example, aiming at the airport in Poland or some other distribution hub." The US and Philippines armed forces on Monday kicked off joint naval exercise named KAMANDAG (Kaagapay Ng Mga Mandirigma ng Dagat), an acronym in Filipino for "Cooperation of the warriors of the sea". The exercise will run till October 14 and will see the participation of 2,550 American and 530 Filipino troops. According to reports, alongside the two countries, Japan and South Korea will be joining the exercise as observers. The exercise held in select areas throughout Luzon will involve island-based armed operations and drills in amphibious landings, live fire and humanitarian assistance. "The exercise aims to enhance bilateral cooperation and interoperability among participating forces in the conduct of combined tactical operations that focus on capacitating the Marine Amphibious Ready Unit and enhancing their capabilities in Special Operations, Coastal Defense Capability, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response (HADR) Operations, and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Operations," the Philippine Marine Corps (PMC) said in a statement. This is a bigger exercise compared to what we did last year. There are a lot of marine corps participating this year. Last year was just virtual and tabletop exercises.” As reported by WION, earlier this year, the two countries held their biggest military exercise in seven years called Balikatan, Tagalog for shoulder-to-shoulder. The exercise ran from March 29 to April 8 with nearly 9,000 navy, marines, air force and army troops, including 5,100 American military personnel participating in it. US defence secretary Lloyd Austin sees no imminent invasion of Taiwan by China

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin stated on Sunday (October 2) that he sees no possibility of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan, where the country is attempting to create a "new normal" with military exercises near the South Asian island.

In a conversation with CNN, Austin said, "I don't see an imminent invasion." He further added, "What we do see is China moving to establish what we would call a new normal. Increased activity—we saw a number of centre line crossings of the Taiwan Strait by their aircraft. That number has increased over time. We've seen more activity with their surface vessels and waters in and around Taiwan," Reuters reported.

On Thursday, The United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted on a new set of rules to address the risk of orbital debris also known as space junk or space debris posing a threat to space exploration. This new rules were passed by a vote of 4-0 and it includes reducing the time to remove defunct satellites from the Earth’s orbit which may get in the way of spacecraft on active missions, reported Reuters.

“It will mean more accountability and less risk of collisions that increase orbital debris and the likelihood of space communication failures,” said the FCC chair, Jessica Rosenworcel. The agency would give the US operators a shorter deadline for post-mission disposal of low-Earth orbit satellites, changing from 25 years to 5 years.

Reportedly, the agency noted that 10,000 satellites have been launched since 1957 and that more than half of them are no longer active. “Defunct satellites, discarded rocket cores, and other debris now fill the space environment, creating challenges for current and future missions,” said the FCC. They also noted that there are more than 4,800 satellites in orbit by the end of 2021, while a large majority of them are commercial low-Earth orbit satellites.

“The second space age is here. For it to continue to grow, we need to do more to clean up after ourselves so space innovation can continue to respond”, said the FCC chair. According to FCC Commissioner Geoffrey Starks, NASA has funded many academic studies on space debris, while a bipartisan group of senators has introduced legislation to jumpstart the technology that would assist with debris removal.

The new rule would “bend the curve of debris proliferation”, said Stark. He added, “It also will reduce collisions and free up resources that would otherwise go toward trying to avoid them.” According to Stark, “without a safe operating environment, debris risk could escalate from a financial afterthought to a hazard that makes investors think twice, and could complicate operations in a way that slows or limits new space endeavors while driving up per-mission costs.”

A valuable 1,000-year-old Christian manuscript that was taken by Bulgarian forces from a monastery in northern Greece more than a century ago has been returned, along with hundreds of other documents and artefacts, by a U.S. museum.

In a ceremony at the Eikosiphoinissa Monastery on Thursday, the 11th-century gospel was solemnly delivered in front of guests including Greek Orthodox Archbishop Elpidophoros of America and representatives from the Museum of the Bible in Washington.

The Greek manuscript, one of the oldest handwritten gospels in existence, is thought to have been created in southern Italy, according to the Archdiocese of America.

In 2014, it was given to the museum after being purchased at an auction. Officials at the museum later recognised it as one of the manuscripts taken from the monastery in 1917 and communicated their wish to restore it to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, the spiritual head of all Orthodox Christians worldwide.

"A historical injustice has been redressed," he said.

According to recent reports, the Chinese government has opened several illegal police stations across the world, including in countries like Europe, the UK, the US, Canada and Ireland. This revelation comes amid China’s quest to emerge as a global superpower and has sparked concerns among human rights campaigners.

These police stations are affiliated with the Public Security Bureau (PSB) across Canada and have been set up to antagonise China’s adversaries, said Investigative Journalism Reportika citing local media. The report also claims that at least three such police stations are in the Greater Toronto Area alone.

The Investigative Journalism Reportika also alleges that Beijing is trying to influence elections in certain countries through these illegal police stations. The arrangement of these illegal police stations is also present in countries like Ukraine, France, Spain, Germany, and the UK. According to the Fuzhou police, they have already opened 30 such police stations in 21 different countries.

Meanwhile, China has reportedly called these facilities “vocational skill training centres” which they deemed necessary to “counter” extremism and improve livelihoods. In 2019, Chinese officials also indicated that most “trainees” had “graduated” from the centres.

This is reportedly a part of China’s efforts to combat “fraud” committed by these citizens and how the police stationed in the five continents have assisted authorities in Beijing to carry out “policing operations on foreign soil”.

“These operations eschew official bilateral police and judicial cooperation and violate the international rule of law, and may violate the territorial integrity in third countries involved in setting up a parallel policing mechanism using illegal methods,” read the report by Safeguard Defenders, a Spain-based human rights NGO.

According to the report, there are a total of 54 such stations in 30 different countries. It further indicates that Europe is home to a majority of these illegal police stations and they are in several major cities including Paris, Madrid, Prague, Budapest, Athens, and Frankfurt. There are reportedly also three such stations in the UK including two in London and one in Glasgow.

Meanwhile, the report also claimed that there are four such stations in North America, three in Toronto and one in New York City. There are several illegal police stations in Asian countries like Japan, Uzbekistan, Brune, and Mongolia, said the report.

The report also details how Beijing has done this as an attempt to combat the growing issue of telecommunication fraud by Chinese nationals living abroad. Till now, they have reportedly run several operations that have led to at least 230,000 Chinese nationals being “persuaded to return” to China “voluntarily” to face criminal prosecution.

According to the report, the Chinese government has claimed that these police stations are essential for citizens living abroad but the report points out how many of the services that these illegal police stations carry out would be traditionally carried out by the country’s embassy. The report alleges that these stations have been used to further China’s overseas law enforcement capabilities which might be in violation of international law.

Therefore, the report concludes by saying, “As these operations continue to develop, and new mechanisms are set up, it is evident that countries governed by the standards set by universal human rights and the rule of law urgently need to investigate these practices to identify the (local) actors at work, mitigate the risks and effectively protect the growing number of those targeted.”

This statement was made in relation to another part of the report that outlines the potential human rights violations that take place at these stations including using methods like harassment or intimidation or even threatening family members of those living overseas. The report also claims that these stations are being used to spread Beijing's propaganda, and monitor the behaviour and opinions of Chinese nationals living abroad.
