South Korea’s military apologised for a failed missile launch amid its joined drill with the United States in response to North Korea. According to reports, the missile launched during the drill malfunctioned and crashed causing alarm among nearby residents who thought they were under attack from North Korea.

The incident took place on Tuesday when the live-fire drill which included South Korea and the US was supposed to show strength among the allies against North Korea which had launched a test missile over Japan, earlier that day.

However, a South Korean short-range Hyumoo-2 ballistic missile crashed to the ground inside the air base in the country’s coastal city of Gangneung and although the missile did not explode it caused quite a scare among the nearby residents who reportedly thought North Korea had launched an attack.

South Korea’s military acknowledged the attack hours later as social media users posted videos of orange flames emerging from a nearby area they described as the Gangneung air force base. “Many frantic residents called the city hall,” an official at the Gangneung City Hall told AFP.

According to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, there were no reported casualties and an investigation is underway to determine what caused the “abnormal flight” of the missile. This incident took place when South Korea and the US fired a volley of missiles into the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan.

This comes after North Korea fired a ballistic missile over Japan for the first time in 5 years. According to reports, North Korea launched an intermediate-range ballistic missile which flew a record distance of 4,600 km and at an altitude of 1,000 km, which also puts the US Pacific territory of Guam in striking distance.

The missile also reportedly landed 3,200 km east of Japan in the Pacific Ocean, which led the Japanese government to issue an alert for the citizens in Hokkaido and Aomori urging them to take cover as the ballistic missile passed high over the two regions. On Tuesday, the US and South Korean fighter jets also carried out bombing drills at the target in the Yellow sea.

South Korea and USA held bombing drills on Tuesday (October 4) in response to missile launch by North Korea over Japan, said South Korea's military. It said that four F-15K fighter jets were mobilised and they dropped a pair of guided bomb on a target that was off its west coast. The US joined in with four F-16 fighter jets.

On Tuesday, North Korea test-fired a ballistic missile farther than ever before. The test sent missiles soaring over Japan. This has happened for the first time in five years.

Officials in Tokyo and Seoul said the North’s ballistic missile flew 4,500 to 4,600 kilometres (2,796 to 2,850 miles) to a maximum altitude of about 1,000 km.

Japan warned its citizens to take cover and suspended some train services when the missile passed over its north before falling into the Pacific Ocean.

It was the latest in an escalating cycle of muscle flexing by the North. A US aircraft carrier made a port call in South Korea for the first time since 2018 on Sept. 23, and North Korea has conducted five launches in the last 10 days.

The period has also seen joint drills by the United States, South Korea and Japan, and a visit to the fortified border between the Koreas by US Vice President Kamala Harris, who accused the North of undermining security.

North Korea accuses the United States and its allies of threatening it with exercises and defence build-ups.

Recent tests had drawn relatively muted responses from Washington, which is focused on the war in Ukraine as well as other domestic and foreign crises.

US President Joe Biden will announce new guidelines and grants to protect reproductive rights on Tuesday, and describe how abortion rights have been curtailed since the Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to terminating pregnancies.

He will be speaking at a meeting of the reproductive rights task force, also to be attended by Vice President Kamala Harris, that is being held 100 days after the landmark Roe v. Wade judgment.

The meeting will focus on how millions of women cannot access abortion services and doctors and nurses are facing criminal penalties for providing such services, according to a White House official and a letter shared by the White House.

The letter to the president was from Jen Klein, the head of the inter-agency task force on abortion access.

At the meeting, the president will also speak about new guidelines for universities from the Department of Education to protect students from discrimination on the basis of pregnancy and $6 million in new grants to protect access to reproductive healthcare services from the Department of Health & Human Services.

The letter from Klein said abortion bans have gone into effect in more than one dozen states since the court overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling on June 24. Nearly 30 million women of reproductive age now live in a state with a ban, including nearly 22 million women who cannot access abortion care after six weeks, it said.

The letter also notes efforts by Republican lawmakers such as Senator Lindsay Graham to issue a nationwide abortion ban.

Democrats are increasingly hopeful that the Supreme Court decision will boost voter support in November's midterm elections.

A Pew Research Center poll in August showed abortion rocketing up as a priority for Democratic voters — from 46 percent in March to 71 percent.

To keep China at bay in the semiconductor competition, the Joe Biden administration is mulling another round of restrictions on the export of US semiconductor technology.

To keep China at bay in the semiconductor competition, the Joe Biden administration is mulling another round of restrictions on the export of US semiconductor technology. According to sources, the Commerce Department is expected to bring forth a package of rules to categorise which semiconductor technologies can be exported to China. Washington is expected to bring the sledgehammer on the export of advanced semiconductors and tools for logic and memory chip production that can be used for supercomputing and artificial intelligence. Additionally, the department will look to codify the previous guidance issued to specific companies. This is not the first time the US has moved to choke off Chinese firms' supply of chips. In 2020, former president Donald Trump's administration banned suppliers from selling chips made using US technology to tech giant Huawei without a special license. Lately, the Joe Biden government has also given signs regarding such restrictions. As reported by WION, the US officials in early September told NVIDIA to stop exporting two top computing chips for artificial intelligence work to China The move was aimed at crippling Chinese firms' ability to carry out advanced work like image recognition and advanced computing. Read more: US officials order Nvidia to halt sales of top AI chips to China Why the restrictions? For years, the US led the technology battle with China. However, the tips have recently scaled in Beijing's favour. As reported by WION, according to a study presented by Special Competitive Studies Project (SCSP), US could lose the tech competition to China if it does not take action on the 5G, AI, and microchip core fronts. The report added that the tech race would be going through its critical phase in the 2025-2030 period. During this window, Beijing might be able to edge out the USA if the current trend continues. Read more: China could pip USA in the tech war by the end of the decade: Report The “Mid-Decade Challenges to National Competitiveness” report further shed light on the fact that China has been making rapid advancements in the aforementioned core areas. It added that the USA has been playing catch-up on 5G and microelectronics supply chains. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:
