West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin said he is considering launching a presidential campaign, moving closer toward a bid that could shake up the 2024 election.

Joe Manchin's presidential bid sparks anxiety

Lately, there's been chatter that the Federal Reserve might be wrapping up its interest-rate tightening game. Why does that matter? Well, it's like a domino effect, and one of those falling dominos is gold, inching closer to $2,000 an ounce again. Remember, when gold makes big moves, it often signals something bigger on the horizon.

In early November, analysts turned bullish on gold when it busted through $1,940. Now, their crystal balls are predicting a test of the $2,075 record high in the next few months. And, if it manages to cozy up with a monthly close above $2,100, some are even expecting a long-term journey up to $3,500 or beyond. That's a big deal in the precious metals world.

But here's where it gets real for the everyday folks and why we should be worried that the level of U.S. credit-card delinquencies is waving a red flag for an upcoming recession.

When consumers are 30+ days late on their credit card bills, it's not just a sign of forgetfulness – it's often a signal that wallets are feeling a bit too tight. And when that extends to 90+ days late, it's like a louder alarm blaring in the economic control room.

Historically, when more people delay paying off their credit cards, it's a cue that consumers are tightening their belts. It's not just about cutting back on fancy dinners or dreamy vacations; it's about essentials too – like medicine and food. When our wallets start feeling the pinch, we rethink where every dollar goes.

So, here's the lowdown – rising credit card delinquencies are like a memo from the financial wizards, telling us that people are struggling. When folks tighten their spending, it ripples through the economy. Businesses feel it, jobs might be on shaky ground, and suddenly, we're talking about a recession knocking at the door.

It's like a wake-up call for us consumers. When we see those credit card delinquencies climbing, it's not just about numbers on a chart; it's about our everyday lives.

And for now, it's not looking like the best of times for the average American.

Decoded: Are credit card delinquencies pointing at a recession in the U.S?

A court in California sentenced a male nanny to over 700 years in prison for sexually assaulting 16 young boys he was babysitting, as per the office of Orange County District Attorney.

A court in California sentenced a male nanny to over 700 years in prison for sexually assaulting 16 young boys he was babysitting, as per the office of Orange County District Attorney. The court found 34-year-old Matthew Antonio Zakrzewski guilty of dozens of charges, including sexually assaulting boys between two and 12 years of age. He was also found guilty of exposing his 17th victim to child pornography to sexually assault him. Zakrzewski's heinous crimes did not stop there. He filmed several of his crimes against the young children. The authorities initially charged him with three felony counts of lewd and lascivious conduct with a minor under 14, one felony count of oral copulation of a child under ten, and one felony count of child pornography. The district attorney's office reported that the crimes occurred between January 2014 and May 2019. The Laguna Beach police Department arrested Zakrzewski in May 2019 at a local airport after a couple filed a complaint against him for touching their eight-year-old son inappropriately. ALSO READ | Ohio woman charged after her toddler accidentally fires her gun at Walmart The investigators found more video evidence and tips against him during the probe. Zakrzewski had a website where he called himself the "original sitter buddy." He also portrayed himself as a manny, providing multiple services like mentorships, big brother relationships, and overnight and vacationing babysitting. In the court, the parents of the young victims expressed their anger towards Zakrewski through victim impact statements, narrating how he tricked them into gaining access to their children. A mother of a boy who fell victim to Zakrzewski's crimes described her pain in the court, saying she will never know how her little one should've turned out in the absence of the trauma of being sexually assaulted. The young boy was only two when Zakrzewski molested him. However, Zakrzewski did not show any remorse or apologise. Instead, he said, "I prided myself on bringing smiles to your children, and all the good times we shared were 100 per cent genuine." Several parents present in the court covered their ears and wept while he spoke. Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said, "This monster disguised by smiles and giggles engaged in the most horrific and calculated manipulation to ensure he would continue to have unfettered access to what these parents cherish the most." He added, "These innocent little boys must bear a lifetime of trauma, and their parents will bear a lifetime of pain knowing that they put their precious children in the arms of an animal because they believed who he said he was." We break down what's going on with rising credit card delinquencies and what it might mean for those in the US.

Decoding State of US Economy

British finance minister, Jeremy Hunt, is gearing up to share some big news about taxes. He's ruling out tax cuts that might make prices go up, especially with inflation in the mix. However, Jeremy has some pressure on him from fellow conservatives. They're a bit nervous about the labour party leading in the polls and want tax cuts to level the playing field.

For many, after reaching a certain age their birthday is just another day, but when you are the president of one the most powerful nations which is embroiled in two wars and running for reelection at the age of 80, it is anything but that.

The United States President Joe Biden turned 81, on Monday (Nov 20) and once again the age question for the incumbent who has sought to run the White House for four more years has overshadowed the birthday festivities.

The incumbent Democrat was the oldest American president when he took the top job at the age of 78 and marked the milestone for being the only US president to be 80 while in office.

American politics and age

Time and time again American politics is faced with the question of ‘how old is too old to hold public office?’ Notably, while Biden was the oldest person to take office in 2021, his predecessor Donald Trump was 74 years old at the end of his presidency and is now the Republican frontrunner also once held that title.

To put their age into perspective, Biden was born in the year 1942, when the US was still involved in World War II and Trump (1946) was born the same year that the United Nations held its first meeting.

Republican Ronald Reagan, who held the previous prior record for the oldest US president, ended his second four-year term at age 77 in 1989.

But Trump and Biden are not even the oldest people running for elections. Former US House Speaker and Democrat Nancy Pelosi, earlier this year announced her re-election bid for next year is 83 years old. While the oldest sitting US Senator Republican Chuck Grassley, aged 90.

The term “gerontocracy” has now been increasingly used to describe the current situation in American politics, and rightly so. The term describes a government ruled by people who are significantly older than the country’s adult population. Sounds familiar?

Biden, who has been a public figure for half a century now, when he was first elected to the Senate in 1972, will be 86 at the end of his second term, if he gets one.

Senate Minority and Republican party leader Mitch McConnell (81) is the longest-serving leader in the history of the Senate and has not even hinted at his plans to retire.

Back in September, the long-debated question in American politics once again took centre stage after McConnell appeared to freeze for half a minute while answering reporter questions, after facing a similar episode in July. The incidents sparked renewed concerns about his health since he suffered from a concussion, in March.

American voters concerned about Biden’s age

Over the last few months, the incumbent president’s age among American voters has become what some reports have described as the single greatest concern.

While Biden has repeatedly shrugged off and made jokes over concerns about his age and the White House insisting that he is healthy enough to serve as commander-in-chief, most voters are not convinced.

With the 2024 presidential elections less than a year away, the incumbent president’s age has become a sticking point for Biden and the Democrats.

Earlier this month, a Bloomberg News/Morning Consult survey found that voters in seven swing states were more likely to associate old age with Biden than any other topic. The issue is also being used to target both Biden and Trump ahead of the elections.

“So, I’ve said publicly, the presidency is not a job for an 80-year-old, that Donald Trump would actually be older on January 20, 2025, than Biden was on January 20, 2021,” said Florida Governor and Republican White House hopeful, Ron DeSantis, in an interview with CNN, on Sunday (Nov 19).

Biden, who is known for his gaffes, stumbles, and occasionally rambling answers during press conferences. Less than a week ago, Biden referred to his Vice President and second-in-command Kamala Harris as “President Harris”.

“President Harris is here to make sure we do it the right way,” Biden said during his address at a White House event.

Meanwhile, a report by the Washington Post published on Sunday (Nov 19) said some of Biden’s top allies are scrambling to convince major donors and other Democrats whether they like it or not, that he is their best bet to defeat Republicans next year.

A poll by NBC News, on Sunday, showed Trump for the first time surpassed Biden in a national general election poll with the former president taking a slim two per cent lead. This seems to have scared some donors.

“The bad news is that everybody is wetting the bed inside of Biden world,” one fundraiser told WaPo.

But it seems like Biden is not the only one under scrutiny for his age. Republican frontrunner Trump, in recent weeks, is also coming under sharper focus as he recently confused the Hungarian leader for the Turkish one, claimed that he defeated Barack Obama in the 2016 elections when he ran against Hillary Clinton, and warned that the world might be headed for a second, rather than a third, world war.

Biden’s plans for his birthday

The incumbent president’s birthday has once again turned an unwelcome spotlight on the fact that he is the oldest president in American history. “I know I’m 198 years old,” Biden had joked back in June.

Unlike most former presidents who have thrown lavish parties for their birthdays, Biden plans to observe his milestone privately with family later this week in Nantucket, reported The New York Times.

But first, keeping up with the notably strange American tradition of presidential turkey pardons, ahead of Thanksgiving, Biden will spare the lives of turkeys Liberty and Bell weighing, 42.5 pounds and 42.1 pounds, respectively, on Monday (Nov 20).

Recent research delves into the intricate relationship between Earth's surface water and the outermost layer of its metallic liquid core. According to this research, water transported through tectonic plate subduction zones over billions of years reaches the lower mantle, instigating a significant chemical reaction upon reaching the core-mantle boundary, situated 2,900 kilometres beneath the surface.

This chemical interplay results in the creation of a top core layer enriched in hydrogen, while simultaneously dispatching silica to the lower mantle. Contrary to prior beliefs, the study posits a more extensive material exchange between the core and mantle.

Understanding this process is pivotal, given that the outer core's composition, predominantly iron and nickel, plays a pivotal role in generating Earth's magnetic field. This field acts as a shield, safeguarding the planet from solar winds and radiation.

The findings challenge conventional wisdom, indicating that material exchange between the core and mantle is more dynamic than previously assumed.

"For years, it has been believed that material exchange between Earth's core and mantle is small," materials scientist Dan Shim from Arizona State University told Science Alert.

"Yet, our recent high-pressure experiments reveal a different story. We found that when water reaches the core-mantle boundary, it reacts with silicon in the core, forming silica," he added.

What's the mystery of 'E Prime' layer?

The study proposes that prolonged chemical exchanges between the core and mantle contribute to the formation of the elusive 'E prime' layer, a phenomenon identified but unexplained at the core-mantle boundary.

Laser-heated diamond-anvil cells were employed to simulate the rigorous conditions at the core-mantle boundary. These experiments demonstrated that subducted water undergoes a transformative chemical reaction with core materials, morphing the outer core into a hydrogen-rich film and dispersing silica crystals to the mantle.

The altered core film results in a less dense and slower seismic speed layer at the core's apex, aligning with seismic wave observations. This revelation challenges preconceived notions and deepens our comprehension of Earth's internal dynamics.

The study's findings suggest a more intricate global water cycle than previously envisioned. The potential repercussions of the altered core film on the deep water cycle highlight the interconnected nature of Earth's internal processes.

These experiments demonstrated that subducted water undergoes a transformative chemical reaction with core materials, morphing the outer core into a hydrogen-rich film and dispersing silica crystals to the mantle. Also read | James Webb telescope's observations show ice-covered pebbles delivering water to young planets The altered core film results in a less dense and slower seismic speed layer at the core's apex, aligning with seismic wave observations. (With inputs from agencies)

This Armistice Day has coincided with a period marked by two major conflicts — the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Hamas war. Both conflicts have resulted in a substantial loss of lives, with civilians, including children and women, tragically among the casualties.

Originally instituted to mark the end of World War I, this day has evolved into a symbol of remembrance and gratitude for the sacrifices made by countless men and women in the name of peace.

WION in this explainer will elaborate on the evolution of Armistice day into Veterans Day.

Armistice Day, which initially marked the end of World War I, evolved into Veterans Day in the United States to honour all military veterans. The transformation is a broader recognition of the contributions of veterans from various conflicts.

On November 11, 1918, the Allies and Germany signed an armistice, ending the hostilities emanating from World War I. However, the formal conclusion of World War I came with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919.

The war reportedly claimed the lives of more than 15 million people. King George V of England in 1919 proclaimed this date as Armistice Day. As the armistice took effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, the commemorative day was marked by two minutes of silence at 11 am.

In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson, in a special message to the nation, said, "With splendid forgetfulness of mere personal concerns, we remodeled our industries, concentrated our financial resources, increased our agricultural output, and assembled a great army, so that at the last our power was a decisive factor in the victory. … Out of this victory, there arose new possibilities of political freedom and economic concert. The war showed us the strength of great nations acting together for high purposes."

A transformation

It wasn't until the 1950s that the nature of the commemoration underwent a significant transformation.

Alvin J. King of Emporia, Kansas, proposed changing the name of Armistice Day to Veterans Day in 1953. He was seeking to broaden its scope to honour veterans from all wars and conflicts.

This proposal carried personal significance for King, as his stepson, John Cooper, whom he had raised, lost his life in combat during World War II.

In recognition of his efforts, a congressional resolution in 2003 acknowledged King's role in initiating the change, noting the grassroots celebration of the renamed holiday in Emporia.

The efforts of Alvin J. King received vital support from Representative Edward H. Rees from Emporia.

Subsequently, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed Armistice Day to Veterans Day in 1954. He pointed out at the broader significance of honouring all veterans, not just those of World War I.

However, in 1968, a law moved the observance of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October, seeking to provide a consistent three-day weekend for federal employees.

Yet, this change faced public opposition, and in 1975, President Gerald Ford signed a law returning the holiday to its original date, November 11.

This adjustment became effective in 1978, solidifying November 11 as Veterans Day.

It's crucial to distinguish Veterans Day from Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday in May.

While Veterans Day honours all veterans, Memorial Day specifically pays tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for the United States.

Ceremonies overshadowed by protests this year

The tradition of honouring veterans on November 11 isn't unique to the United States. British Commonwealth nations and various European countries mark the armistice anniversary with ceremonies.

In London, a National Service of Remembrance is held at the Cenotaph, a war memorial, and the wearing of red poppies symbolises support for the armed forces. However, this year, against the backdrop of Israel-Hamas war, there are pro-Palestine protests and counter-protests which have erupted on Armistice day.

Palestine supporters gathered near the Cenotaph on Whitehall holding marches. There is a huge condemnation for UK's now-sacked home secretary Suella Braverman for calling the demonstrations "hate marches".
