The Pew Research Center has revealed that Indians constitute the third-largest group of unauthorised immigrants in the US, totalling around 725,000.

This places Mexico and El Salvador ahead on the list. The study indicates that 10.5 million unauthorised immigrants in the US represent about three per cent of the total population and 22 per cent of the foreign-born population.

US Customs and Border Protection data highlights a significant influx of undocumented Indian immigrants, with 6,917 encounters in the period from October 2022 to September 2023.

The number surged after COVID-19 border restrictions eased, reaching 63,927 in the 2022 fiscal year, with 97,000 encounters this year.

“The total number of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. from countries other than Mexico has grown rapidly. In 2021, this population was 6.4 million, up by 900,000 from 2017,” the research says.

“Almost every region in the world had a notable increase in the number of unauthorized immigrants in the US from 2007 to 2021. The largest increases were from Central America (240,000) and South and East Asia (180,000),” it adds.

Stuart Seldowitz, an ex-adviser to former US President Barack Obama, has been arrested after videos emerged showing him hurling a racist and Islamophobic tirade against a food cart vendor in New York.

Seldowitz arrested

The 64-year-old, said to be a resident of Manhattan, was arrested on Wednesday (Nov 22) on preliminary charges of second-degree aggravated harassment and three counts of stalking – stalking causing fear, stalking at employment, and stalking as a hate crime – according to the New York Police Department (NYPD).

The NYPD also said that Seldowitz was accused of approaching the 24-year-old at his workplace several times and making hate-laden and Islamophobic remarks.

The former national security adviser’s arrest took place a day after he was fired from his company, Gotham Government Relations.

“Gotham Government Relations has ended all affiliation with Stuart Seldowitz, an individual who hasn’t contributed to our work in years,” the lobbying firm said in a statement.

It added, “The video of his actions is vile, racist, and beneath the dignity of the standards we practise at our firm.”

The firm has since removed Seldowitz’s page from its website.

Seldowitz was hired by the firm last year as its foreign affairs chair.

He had served as the acting director for the National Security Council South Asia Directorate in the Obama administration.

From 1999 to 2003, he was also the deputy director/senior political officer in the US State Department’s Office of Israel and Palestinian Affairs.

Seldowitz’s remarks

In the video, Seldowitz starts off by saying that the Egyptian intelligence agency will get hold of the cart vendor’s parents and torture them.

“The Mukhabarat wants your picture. The Mukhabarat in Egypt will get your parents. Does your father like his fingernails? They’ll take them out one by one,” said the former advisor, in one of the videos, while the man he’s addressing repeatedly tells him to leave and says he doesn’t speak English.

To which Seldowitz responds by saying, “Why should I go? Tell me why I should go? I’m standing here. I’m an American. It’s a free country. It’s not like Egypt.”

He was also seen mocking Islam and accusing the 24-year-old employee of supporting the Palestinian militant group Hamas amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. “You support killing little children,” Seldowitz could be heard telling the vendor in one of the videos.

‘I do regret’

In a telephonic interview with The New York Times, on Tuesday (Nov 21), Seldowitz said he had not seen the videos but added that the incident began with him asking the vendor if he was Egyptian.

Subsequently, as the conversation progressed the 24-year-old expressed support for Hamas, Seldowitz told the NYT.

“At that point, I got rather upset and I’ve said things to him, that in retrospect, I probably regret, though – that I do regret,” said Seldowitz.

He also went on to admit saying that instead of focusing on him and his remarks he “expanded into insulting his religion and so on.”

Anticipation is building on Wall Street as the arrival of Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) looms, heralding what is deemed as crypto's breakthrough on the institutional stage.

According to Bloomberg, the expected green signal from the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for these ETFs is fuelling a fresh hype cycle, with industry insiders eyeing a potential $100 billion market.

The regulatory pendulum, once a hindrance, is now swinging favourably, paving the way for institutional and retail investors to delve into the digital currency space.

As the SEC gears up to potentially approve Bitcoin ETFs by mid-January or sooner, the move is seen as a redemption opportunity for digital asset proponents. The involvement of heavyweight players like BlackRock, Fidelity, and Invesco is likely to contribute to the growth of the spot-Bitcoin ETF market.

Bloomberg Intelligence estimates suggest that, with these reputable players on board, the market has the potential to evolve into a $100 billion juggernaut over time.

expressed his confidence in the imminent SEC approval, Jeff Janson, a wealth adviser managing about $550 million, told Bloomberg: "I feel like we are now staring down the gun barrel of the SEC finally delivering approval."

He anticipates significant institutional-level interest once Bitcoin is accessible through the ETF wrapper. This sentiment aligns with the bullish outlook that the involvement of major institutions can transform the digital asset landscape.

However, despite the optimism surrounding the Bitcoin ETFs, the aftermath of the FTX implosion continues to cast a shadow on the crypto market. The shockwaves from the industry's largest existential crisis have restrained interest, especially from everyday investors.

Bitcoin, despite recent rallies, has not yet reached its 2021 high, and notable figures in finance, like hedge fund manager Paul Tudor Jones, have maintained a low profile on digital assets. Scam incidents, false claims, and market volatility have added complexities to the narrative of crypto's integration into traditional finance.

According to Chuck Cumello, president and CEO of Essex Financial Services, Bitcoin ETF would simplify trading and make it more accessible for clients. The ETF's introduction is viewed as a significant development, offering a direct and supervision-friendly method for institutions to include crypto investments in their portfolios. The ETF's appeal extends to both millennial investors and high-net-worth individuals.

Laila Pence, founder of Pence Wealth Management, offers a word of caution, highlighting the waning interest in digital assets among younger clients. She points out the solid performance of traditional markets, questioning the necessity of taking risks in the crypto space when more conventional options are considered safer. Pence's perspective underscores the diverse opinions within the financial advisory landscape regarding the adoption and potential risks associated with cryptocurrency.

To some, the introduction of Bitcoin ETFs is more than a market opportunity; it symbolises the normalisation of a once-discredited asset class. The transparency and liquidity offered by the ETF structure are seen as a compliance-friendly avenue for institutional players, potentially unlocking fresh lending and derivatives trades. Coinbase emphasises that the ETF represents more than immediate inflows, predicting it could reshape the market in entirely unprecedented ways, albeit over time.

Wall Street awaits $100 bn crypto boom with Bitcoin ETFs: Report

Nvidia, the frontrunner in artificial intelligence chips, is set to announce another robust revenue forecast, riding on the success of its AI-powered technologies on Tuesday. However, all eyes are on the potential impact of the expanding U.S. restrictions on the sale of its high-end chips to China, which has become a major concern for investors.

According to Reuters, the company, which has seen a meteoric rise in its stock value, is facing scrutiny amid worries that the recent bans on specific chip sales to China could disrupt its market presence in the country, which accounts for over one-fifth of its revenue.

"There is an underlying assumption that Nvidia has total market dominance ... so anything that affects that perception ... is going to temper enthusiasm," Reuters cited Kyle Rodda, an analyst at Capital.com.

The Biden administration's recent ban on the sale of H800 and A800 chips to China, Nvidia's third-largest market, has stirred concerns about the company's outlook. Nvidia downplayed the immediate effects of the restrictions but saw a dip in its stock value following reports that up to $5 billion in Chinese orders might be at risk.

Navigating China's Chip Challenges: Nvidia's strategies unveiled

Before the latest export curbs, Nvidia's H800 chip was a standout performer in the Chinese market, outpacing competitors due to its superior performance. In response to the restrictions, Nvidia has developed three new chips tailored for the Chinese market.

Analysts suggest that while these chips may experience a reduction in overall performance due to controls imposed by the U.S., they could still find traction among Chinese customers while remaining acceptable to U.S. regulators.

Stacy Rasgon, an analyst at Bernstein, told Reuters about the challenge Nvidia faces: “While the prior workarounds required only small changes to the memory bandwidth of the parts, this time around, the nature of the controls forces a sharp reduction in overall performance."

Despite these hurdles, Rasgon believes that the chips may still be attractive to the Chinese market, potentially mitigating the impact of the export curbs.

AI giant's growth trajectory continues amidst headwinds from China

Nvidia is expected to reveal a staggering 173 per cent surge in revenue for the third quarter, according to analysts polled by LSEG. Wall Street projections anticipate a further 195 per cent increase in revenue for the current quarter. Despite concerns about the impact of Chinese restrictions, Nvidia's stock trades at 31 times its 12-month forward earnings estimates, still below the price-to-earnings ratio of rival AMD.

The company's commitment to innovation is evident in the introduction of the H200, a top-of-the-line chip for AI applications. With higher bandwidth memory, the H200 aims to maintain Nvidia's competitive edge over AMD, which is gearing up to release its MI300 chip.

Major cloud service providers, including Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, will offer access to H200 chips. Additionally, specialty AI cloud providers CoreWeave, Lambda, and Vultr are set to join the ranks, marking another strategic move by Nvidia.

However, Morningstar analysts suggest, Nvidia's growth may eventually reduce the material importance of revenue from China.

(With inputs from Reuters) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

Binance chief executive Changpeng Zhao on Tuesday (Nov 21) stepped down and pleaded guilty to US money laundering breaches in a deal that will see the cryptocurrency exchange he founded pay over $4 billion in penalties, said prosecutors.

"Binance became the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange in part because of the crimes it committed –- now it is paying one of the largest corporate penalties in US history," Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement.

"It made it easy for criminals to move their stolen funds and illicit proceeds on its exchanges," Garland said.

“Binance also did more than just fail to comply with federal law. It pretended to comply,” he added.

Zhao pleaded guilty to failing to maintain an effective anti-money laundering programme, said the Department of Justice.

He lives abroad and entered his plea in person in the US, Garland added.

He took to his official X account and wrote, "Today, I stepped down as CEO of Binance."

"Admittedly, it was not easy to let go emotionally. But I know it is the right thing to do. I made mistakes, and I must take responsibility," he added.

US slaps over $4 billion monetary penalty on Binance as CEO Changpeng Zhao pleads guilty

A United States warplane on Tuesday (Nov 21) attacked an air base west of Baghdad and killed several Iran-backed militiamen, the Pentagon said.

This came after a short-range ballistic projectile was fired at American and allied personnel in Iraq.

"We can confirm an attack last night by Iran-backed militias using a close-range ballistic missile against US and coalition forces at Al-Asad Airbase, which resulted in eight injuries and some minor damage to infrastructure," Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Pat Ryder said in a statement.

"Immediately following the attack, a US military AC-130 aircraft in the area conducted a self-defence strike against an Iranian-backed militia vehicle and a number of Iranian-backed militia personnel involved in this attack. This self-defence strike resulted in several enemy KIA (killed in action)," Ryder said.

The Ain al-Asad Air Base, which is located in the desert of Iraq's Western Anbar province, hosts forces of the US-led coalition fighting the Islamic State (IS) group in Iraq.

This is the first time the United States announced a strike on Iranian proxy forces in Iraq after targeting Tehran-linked sites in Syria on three occasions in recent weeks.

The move by the US comes after a spate of attacks were reported in Iraq aimed at American troops which claimed the lives of several army personnel.

The spike in attacks on American troops is linked to the upsurge in violence between Israel and Hamas, which broke out after the Palestinian militant group's assault against Israel on October 7.

Tel Aviv, in retaliation, launched a ground and air offensive against the Hamas group in Gaza, which as per the besieged Palestinian enclave's health ministry has claimed the lives of more than 14,000 people.

US forces attacked approximately 66 times

Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh during a press briefing said that the US forces "have been attacked approximately 66 times since October 17 -- 32 separate times in Iraq and 34 separate times in Syria."

The attacks have wounded nearly 62, said Singh. It doesn't yet include the eight cited by Ryder since that most recent projectile strike is still being evaluated.

China's major state-owned banks have actively participated in the currency market, buying the yuan and accelerating its rebound against a weakening US dollar, according to undisclosed sources cited by Reuters on Tuesday.

Traditionally involved in selling dollars to prevent the yuan's decline, the state banks' unexpected yuan-buying this week has contributed to a 2 per cent gain, placing the currency at approximately 7.13 to the dollar, its highest in nearly four months. Observers suggest the move aims to hasten the yuan's appreciation and encourage exporters to convert more foreign exchange receipts into yuan.

Market analysts speculate that the state banks employed their usual combination of swaps and spot market activity. They were observed exchanging yuan for dollars in the onshore swap market and subsequently selling those dollars in the spot currency market.

The action coincided with a broader weakening of the US dollar, with the dollar index falling over 3 per cent in November due to diminishing US yields amid signs of a peak in Federal Reserve monetary tightening. Despite the recent gains, the Chinese currency is still down over 3 per cent against the dollar this year.

State banks' dollar-selling activities momentarily pushed the onshore spot yuan to 7.1296 per dollar, surpassing its daily official guidance for the first time in four months. The People's Bank of China (PBOC) has been consistently lowering the dollar-yuan daily fixing rate this week, setting it at a three-and-a-half month low of 7.1406 per dollar on Tuesday.

Analysts speculate that these actions might be in preparation for a potential policy rate cut, taking advantage of a favourable external environment to strengthen the Chinese yuan (CNY).

Reuters quoted Kiyong Seong, the lead Asia macro strategist at Societe Generale, who expressed astonishment at the continuous lowering of the fixing rate, suggesting it could be indicative of preparations for a policy rate cut.

While recent economic data revealed an uneven recovery in China, with positive surprises in industrial output and retail sales, concerns persist about the potential impact of further monetary easing on the Chinese currency.

The People's Bank of China has been injecting cash through medium-term lending facility loans but has kept the rate unchanged, prompting analysts to anticipate more policy easing in the future.

Zhi Xiaojia, chief China economist at Credit Agricole, acknowledged potential volatilities unless there are significant downside moves in the dollar or positive sentiment events.

She remains relatively constructive on the yuan's outlook into the end of the year and 2024, emphasising the wide yield gap and expectations of further policy easing, including potential rate and reserve requirement ratio cuts by the People's Bank of China.

China's state banks drive yuan rally amidst dollar weakness: Report

An anticipated milestone in the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF), a crucial element of the Biden administration's strategy to counter China, hit a roadblock as negotiations on the trade pillar faced opposition, jeopardising the broader initiative.

The IPEF aims to enhance cooperation on supply chains, environmental concerns, and governance issues. However, the lack of progress in concluding enforceable trade rules has raised doubts among allies, reminiscent of challenges faced during the Trans-Pacific Partnership under President Barack Obama.

President Biden and leaders from 13 nations, including a meeting with China's Xi Jinping, signed agreements focusing on communication and cooperation. Still, the contentious trade negotiations have raised concerns among Asia-Pacific allies, fearing a repetition of the Trans-Pacific Partnership's fate. The situation underlines challenges for the Biden administration, especially as China actively expands its trade agreements in the region, potentially influencing US allies' economic preferences.

"Collapse of the IPEF trade pillar would deal a blow to US standing in the region," Bloomberg quoted John Murphy, Senior Vice President for International Policy at the US Chamber of Commerce as saying. The setback echoes the withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership under President Trump, reflecting poorly on US leadership and undermining efforts to strengthen economic ties in the Indo-Pacific.

The pressure on the Biden administration from Democratic trade sceptics, including Senator Sherrod Brown, reflects domestic political challenges. Brown deems the trade portion of the IPEF unacceptable, emphasising the difficulties faced by the administration in navigating trade agreements that align with its worker-centric trade policy.

President Biden and his trade representative, Katherine Tai, are attempting to downplay differences with other countries, stressing the ongoing commitment to the trade pillar's vision. Tai argues that progress has been made and attributes the lack of a significant announcement to concerns about public communication rather than substantive issues. However, deadlocks over labour and environmental standards, along with a recent shift in the US stance on digital trade, contribute to the impasse.

The stalled negotiations raise concerns about the US's ability to assert itself economically in the Indo-Pacific region. Observers note that while the talks may continue, little progress is expected in the 2024 election year, emphasising the potential impact of the presidential vote on any deal. The uncertainty leaves the door open for China to expand its influence, presenting a challenge to the Biden administration's efforts to counter China's economic sway in the region.

"The trade pillar has been more difficult, and we have not made as much progress as people were hoping," Australia's Trade Minister Don Farrell said. The lack of advancement on trade issues within the IPEF complicates the broader economic diplomacy efforts of the United States in the Asia-Pacific region.

Experts and analysts suggest that failure to move forward on economic and trade matters within the IPEF may make China's trade agreements more appealing to Indo-Pacific countries. China's active participation in initiatives such as the CPTPP and its efforts to upgrade its trade agreements position it as a robust economic partner, potentially undermining US influence.

In countries like Indonesia, where the US competes with China for economic influence, the lack of progress in the IPEF is perceived as a missed opportunity. President Joko Widodo expressed frustration with the US's limited commitment compared to China's willingness to invest in critical areas like electric vehicles and alternative energy projects.

The overall message is that the US's capacity for economic diplomacy is in question. Nigel Cory, a former Australian diplomat, compared US trade and economic policy in the Asia-Pacific to a first-time marathoner starting ambitiously but ending up with challenges.

Russia's mercenary group intends to provide an air defence system to Lebanon's militant group Hezbollah or to the regime in Tehran, as part of an "unprecedented defence cooperation" between the two US adversaries, the White House said on Tuesday (Nov 21).

"Our information... indicates that Wagner, at the direction of the Russian government, was preparing to provide an air defence capability to either Hezbollah or Iran," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters.

Earlier this month, US officials had said that Wagner was prepping up to supply the Pantsir-S1, a Russian self-propelled anti-aircraft gun and projectile system known as SA-22 by NATO, news agency AFP reported citing the Wall Street Journal.

"We are certainly prepared to use our counterterrorism sanctions authorities against Russian individuals or entities that might make these destabilizing transfers," Kirby said.

He added that Iran was "considering providing Russia with ballistic missiles now for use in Ukraine in return for that support."

US braces for record Thanksgiving travel: More flights and cheaper fares for passengers | WION

Black Friday falls on November 24, this year. Retailers are getting ready for what they think will be another record-breaking worldwide shopping frenzy.

Black Friday is typically considered to be the unofficial start of the Christmas shopping season because of the large crowds that gather at big-box stores in the early hours after American Thanksgiving to take advantage of doorbuster prices.

Retailers will be attempting to capitalise on the excitement in the US, Europe, and other regions. What to anticipate on Black Friday in 2023 is as follows.

History of the word 'Black Friday'

Police and bus drivers in Philadelphia began referring to the mayhem that a large inflow of people to the city caused before Thanksgiving weekend as "Black Friday" sometime in the 1960s and early 1970s. On Fridays, shoppers would scour Philadelphia's stores with their Christmas lists in hand, searching for the perfect presents. Parking infractions and shoplifting followed.

Department stores changed the name to "Big Friday" to give it a more uplifting connotation. However, the moniker did not endure, and since the 1980s, retailers have started characterising Black Friday as the day when customers begin their holiday shopping and their retail ledgers are purportedly "in the black," or operating at a profit, according to Marcus Collins, a marketing professor at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business.

Retailers' plans this year

Early Black Friday "deals" of up to 30 per cent off on some limited products online and in stores are already being promoted by retailers such as Best Buy, Macy's, H&M, and pure e-commerce companies like Shein and Temu.

They may gauge consumer demand and prevent product shortages, which could be a major issue this year, with the aid of such early marketing. A severe drought has caused the water levels in the Panama Canal, a vital commercial route, to plummet, which has reduced the amount of ships passing through it.

Intentionally, a lot of American retailers reduced their recruiting intentions for the holidays. Retailers in Europe are also facing a labour crisis, which means that customers may encounter a staffing shortfall.

Are this year's Black Friday crowds likely?

The National Retail Federation (NRF) reports that 130.7 million consumers are expected to shop on Black Friday this year. In the US, Thanksgiving weekend, which includes Black Friday and Cyber Monday (the Monday following Thanksgiving), is usually the busiest time to shop.

Retail analytics company Sensormatic Solutions predicts that over the holiday season, in-store traffic will decrease by 3.5 per cent from the previous year.

According to AccuWeather, rainy weather is mainly not predicted this year, which discouraged in-store traffic on Black Friday morning in various parts of the United States last year.

While the majority of American stores will remain closed on Thanksgiving this year and instead open to customers at 5 or 6 a.m. on Friday, some retailers are promoting online deals that begin at 12:01 a.m. on Thanksgiving.

Kohl's is one of them, offering what it refers to as a "Super Deal" on several items on Thanksgiving and Black Friday, such as Beats Studio Buds wireless noise-cancelling earbuds for $89.99 instead of the usual $149.99.

This year, curbside pick-up and online ordering are being promoted by both large and small retailers as convenient options for those who prefer to bypass storefronts. According to data from Adobe Analytics, American Black Friday internet sales have more than tripled in the last ten years, hitting $9.12 billion on the day last year.

This year, will shoppers find Black Friday deals?

Reuters investigation suggests that several large retailers, including Dollar General, Walmart, and Macy's, may have excess inventory for the second year in a row. To entice customers to visit their stores and websites, they probably need to provide discounts.

Research company Jane Hali & Associates reported even before Black Friday that Nordstrom and Kohl's saw a decline in foot traffic, while Macy's and Kohl's had discounts of up to 60 per cent.

Online savings of up to 35 per cent on toys, 24 per cent on athletic items, and 19 per cent on furniture are anticipated, according to Adobe.

Amounts expected to be spent by shoppers?

The NRF predicts that holiday sales in U.S. stores and online will increase by 3 per cent to 4 per cent in November and December, which will be their weakest growth rate in five years.

According to Adobe Analytics, Black Friday internet spending is predicted to increase 5.7 per cent to approximately $9.6 billion.

According to a survey by fintech company Finder, 132 million Americans want to shop the pre-holiday sales, which include Black Friday and Cyber Monday, in 2023, down from a projected 140 million consumers in the previous year.

According to an Adobe projection, Black Friday online spending in the UK is anticipated to increase 4.5 per cent to $1.30 billion, with total sales throughout the Cyber Weekend set to reach $4.7 billion.

How are retailers luring holiday shoppers with their offerings?

Analysts predict that shops will need to rely on sales and early deals to survive this holiday season, as household budgets are being squeezed by the return of student loan payments and the cost of rent and necessities.

According to Deloitte statistics, consumers last year wanted to maximise promotional activities and finish their shopping in just 5.8 weeks as opposed to a 7.4-week window before the epidemic.

This year, what are the must-have items for Black Friday?

With the recent release of the iPhone 15, smartphones will once again be in demand. Customers who were hoping to purchase Apple's iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max last year came away empty-handed as the tech giant battled production issues in China.

According to a Mastercard survey, electronics are predicted to be the most popular choice this holiday shopping season, with growth of 6 per cent predicted.

A Play Station 5 bundle with "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III" or Marvel's "Spider-Man 2" was available for $499.99 at Best Buy during the start of the retailer's Black Friday sales in late October.

Skin and hair care items are still in demand. Ulta Beauty is selling CoverGirl and Lancome mascaras, Bobbi Brown concealers, and some of its brand products at up to 40 per cent off.
