A Russian court on Friday (Dec 1) extended the pre-trial detention of American-Russian journalist Alsu Kurmasheva for two more months after she failed to register as a “foreign agent”. The extension comes after Russia formally charged Kurmasheva in October.

The Prague-based editor for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), is the second American to be detained by Russia after Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich.

He was arrested in March on spying charges which he, his employer and the White House have since denied.

If found guilty, Kurmasheva faces up to five years in prison.

She was also fined $103 (10,000 roubles) on October 11 after she failed to register her US passport with Russian authorities, reported Reuters citing court documents.

“Alsu has spent 45 days behind bars in Russia and, today, her unjust, politically motivated detention has been extended,” said RFE/RL acting President Jeffrey Gedmin, in a statement.

The US government has successfully concluded a pilot project for issuing "paperless visas," a move that will propel the gradual phase-out of the traditional stamped visas on passport pages. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Visa Services Julie Stufft reportedly shared details at a media round table in Washington where she stated, "We did our first small scope pilot of a paperless visa, which means that the visa process is the same but there's no physical visa in someone's passport."

"We just piloted this for the first time, so this is not something that's going to be happening in the next year," Stufft added.

Stufft also explained the gradual implementation of this system, saying, "It will take us probably 18 months to have widespread use of this or longer. But it is very exciting that we have had this first step where we have actually seen visitors come through...without a physical paper in their passports."

The official anticipated about the eventual need for an app or similar technology for individuals to display their visa status.

While expressing her enthusiasm about the initiative, Stufft mentioned, "That will ultimately, in the future, as some other countries do, require an app or something that allows people to show their visa status without the physical paper in their passport."

Addressing the timeline for extending this system to Indian nationals, Stufft reportedly said, "I hope as soon as possible. But this is a long-term project that we have just piloted for the first time. I think we will see widespread use of this not for another year or so, or maybe longer."

She said that the US issued over 1,40,000 visas to Indian students last year and is working to cut down on the waiting period for visa appointments.

Stufft clarified the difference of the mentioned paperless visa from India's e-visas.

"We don't call it an e-visa (like India) because we have the same visa process up to the point of the paper. An interview is still required by law. If you are getting a paperless visa, it will look all the same until the point where there is no paper."

To focus New Delhi has reacted to us linking of Indian official in the Pannun attempted killing case and calls US' decision concerning and contrary to government policy. Earlier a high level Indian inquiry committee was formed to look into details provided by the United States on the alleged Nexus between organized criminals terrorists and others.

India: US shared inputs on nexus between terrorists, criminals

New Delhi, on Thursday (Nov 30) reiterated that it will be guided by the results of a high-level panel set up as the United States charged an Indian national with conspiring to assassinate Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) chief Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, who has been designated as a terrorist in India.

During a press conference, Arindam Bagchi, spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), called linking of 52-year-old Nikhil Gupta, who has been accused of orchestrating the attempted murder of Pannun, with an Indian government employee a “matter of concern.”

“The nexus between organised crime, trafficking, gunrunning and extremists at an international level is a serious issue for the law enforcement agencies and organisations to consider and it is for that reason that a high-level inquiry committee has been constituted and we will be guided by its results,” said the MEA spokesperson, in response to the question about the case.

He also called the issue a “matter of concern” and “contrary to government policy.”

Indian national charged by US

The statement by the MEA comes a day after the 52-year-old was charged with conspiring to assassinate Khalistani terrorist Pannun, who says he is a dual citizen of the US and Canada, on American soil.

The Financial Times, citing anonymous sources, earlier this month reported that US authorities had thwarted a plot to assassinate Pannun and issued a “warning” to the Indian government over concerns it was linked to the plot.

Following the allegations, Bagchi said the Indian government set up a high-level inquiry committee on November 18 to look into “all the relevant aspects” of the matter. “The Government of India will take necessary follow-up action based on the findings of the Enquiry Committee,” he added.

US consumers defied economic headwinds, shelling out a $12.4 billion on Cyber Monday, underscoring the resilience of the retail sector even as pandemic-era savings dwindle and interest rates soar, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday.

The 9.6 per cent year-over-year spending surge marked the largest online shopping day in history, according to data from Adobe Inc. The surge in spending was facilitated by strong Black Friday sales and the popularity of buy-now-pay-later options, allowing shoppers to extend their budgets with credit.

Despite uncertainties at the start of the 2023 holiday shopping season, consumers responded strongly to discounts, propelling Cyber Week — spanning Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday — to generate a total of $38 billion, a 7.8 per cent increase from the previous year.

Black Friday exceeded projections, reaching $9.8 billion, a 7.5 per cent jump from last year. Thanksgiving spending also saw a boost, reaching $5.6 billion, up 5.5 per cent, highlighting the impact of discounts on consumer demand during the holiday season. From November 1 to November 27, online spending reached $109.3 billion, reflecting a 7.3 per cent increase from 2022.

The surge in online spending during Cyber Monday was complemented by a record high in “buy-now-pay-later usage”, contributing $940 million, a 42.5 per cent increase from the previous year. Consumers embraced these credit facilities for more significant purchases, revealing a shifting trend in shopping behaviour.

Bloomberg quoted Vivek Pandya, a lead analyst at Adobe Digital Insights, as saying, "The record online spending across Cyber Week... shows the impact that discounts can have on consumer demand."

Top-selling items during Cyber Monday included Hot Wheels, the Xbox Series X gaming console, televisions, and small kitchen appliances. The insights were derived from Adobe's extensive tracking, monitoring over 1 trillion visits to retail websites and analysing sales of more than 100 million products.

While traditional big sale days like Black Friday and Cyber Monday have seen a decline in exclusivity, they remain crucial for retailers aiming to gauge consumer preferences and strategically offer targeted discounts leading up to Christmas.

The man accused of shooting and injuring three university students of Palestinian descent in the US city of Burlington, Vermont over the weekend pleaded not guilty to attempted murder charges on Monday (Nov 27).

The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Jason J Eaton, was arrested on Sunday, a day after the attack and appeared in court in Burlington where the judge had also ordered him to remain held without bond.

The shooting, which took place on a street near the University of Vermont, is being seen as a suspected “hate-motivated crime” by the police.

About the condition of victims

The three friends were identified in court documents as Hisham Awartani, Tahseen Aliahmad and Kinnan Abdalhamid, all aged 20. They all remain under medical care with gunshot wounds to the spine, chest and buttocks, respectively.

Two are in stable condition while the third sustained more serious injuries, as per officials.

The court documents also said two out of the three who were shot recounted they were wearing keffiyehs – the traditional black and white Palestinian scarf – and one of them said that they were talking in a mix of English and Arabic when the gunman confronted them.

The victims told the police that they were shot while strolling about a block from the house of Awartani’s grandmother, following an afternoon at a bowling alley, according to a police affidavit filed in support of the charges, reported Reuters.

All three live in different cities but were staying with Awartani and his relatives in Burlington for Thanksgiving. The police said that all three are of Palestinian descent with two of them being US citizens and the third a legal American resident.

All three were graduates of the Ramallah Friends School, a private Quaker school in the occupied West Bank and were now attending universities in the northeast US, their families said.

What happened in court?

Eaton appeared for his arraignment in Chittenden County Criminal Court in Burlington via a video feed from the county jail where he has been detained since his arrest.

He was charged with three counts of attempted second-degree murder which is punishable by a prison sentence of 20 years to life if convicted.

The 48-year-old was seen dressed in an orange jumpsuit at his three-minute arraignment after he was taken into custody by an agent of the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

The law enforcement official was greeted by the suspect, who held his hands out with palms upturned and said to the officer, “I’ve been waiting for you,” according to the police affidavit.

The police also found a handgun, ammunition matching the rounds found at the crime scene, a .22-caliber rifle and two shotguns after searching the 48-year-old’s apartment.

The Department of Justice is assisting local authorities in the investigation, said US Attorney General Merrick Garland. “No person and no community in this country should have to live in fear of lethal violence,” said Garland.
