During the 1800s, North America's continental interior faced some of the most deadly earthquakes ever recorded in US history. Nearly two hundred years later, a study published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth indicates that the central and eastern United States might still be encountering aftershocks stemming from those historical seismic events.

The scientific community has been debating whether current seismicity in stable regions like North America is due to aftershocks, foreshocks, or background seismic activity, according to Science Daily.

Focusing on three major earthquakes in the 17th and 19th centuries, the researchers examined seismic events near Quebec, Canada (1663), the Missouri-Kentucky border (1811-1812), and Charleston, South Carolina (1886). These historical events are crucial, as larger earthquakes tend to generate more aftershocks.

Unlike tectonically active areas near plate boundaries, the stable continental interior of North America experiences rare seismic events. This rarity prompts questions about the sources of modern seismicity in these regions.

To identify potential aftershocks, the researchers employed the nearest neighbour method, analysing earthquakes within a 250-kilometre radius of historical epicentres.

A magnitude threshold of 2.5 ensured reliable recording, allowing the team to discern between aftershocks and background seismic activity.

Spatial distribution analysis provided insights into the nature of seismic activity. While the aftershock sequence near Quebec appears unrelated to modern seismicity, the study suggests that the Missouri-Kentucky and Charleston earthquakes may still be triggering aftershocks centuries later.

The study brings to light that modern seismicity in the said regions is a blend of aftershocks and background seismic activity.

Approximately 30 per cent of earthquakes near the Missouri-Kentucky border and 16 per cent in Charleston are likely aftershocks from historical earthquakes, emphasising the complexity of the seismic landscape.

A 32-year-old woman from Alabama, United States, Kelsey Hatcher who was born with two uteruses is now pregnant in both. She and her husband Caleb, in a recent interview, said that they were very surprised to learn that Kelsey was pregnant earlier this year but even more surprised when they found out that she was expecting two babies.

‘Doubleuhatchlings’

Kelsey, who is documenting her story on her Instagram account “doubleuhatchlings,” said she and her husband during her routine eight-week ultrasound appointment, back in May, found out that not only was she having twins but also that a foetus was present in each of her uteruses.

The massage therapist and mother-of-three has known about her rare condition “uterus didelphys” – where a person is born with two uteruses and two cervixes – since she was 17 years old.

“We were kind of blown away! During that first ultrasound we had LOTS of laughs,” said Kelsey, in an Instagram post.

“When I first found out, I was like, ‘I wonder if there’s anybody I can reach out to just to, you know, see what their experiences were,’” Hatcher told ABC News’ show ‘Good Morning America.’

“But I think I’ve only read of two other cases (in which) they’ve had (pregnancies) in completely separate uteruses, and no one that I’ve been able to reach out to,” the 32-year-old added.

Kelsey has three children ages seven, four and 23 months old and said with each of her three previous pregnancies, she had a single baby carried in one uterus which went full-term, with no complications.

‘Don’t be alarmed’

Speaking about her reaction to the news, Hatcher said she told the nurse to not be alarmed if she saw a second uterus on the ultrasound but the nurse saw a second baby on the scan. “Before she could say anything, I said, ‘Oh my gosh, there’s another one,’” Hatcher told ABC News.

“Probably all I did was laugh for 30 minutes or so because it was just like, this is not happening,” she added. Pregnancies in both uteruses are exceedingly rare. Hatcher said she was told the odds were one in 50 million.

Doctors explain

“Most likely what happened is that she ovulated separately and had one egg come down each fallopian tube, meaning coming down on each side of the uterus, and then sperm travelled up on each separate uterus and fertilisation occurred separately,” Shweta Patel, the obstetrician-gynaecologist caring for Hatcher at the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Women & Infants Center, told ABC News.

Separately, Patel also told NBC affiliate WVTM that the pregnancy was “very, very rare” and because of its uniqueness, her pregnancy is considered high-risk.

Kelsey’s daughters could also be born hours, days, or even weeks apart considering that her uteruses could begin contracting at different times. “I think medically, this is such a rare thing that we don’t have a better way of describing it besides still calling them twins,” said Patel.

Hatcher is expected to give birth to both the babies or “the girlies” as she affectionately calls them, with a due date of December 25, Christmas Day.

Markets were relieved to see that US inflation fell significantly in October. The inflation figure is a leading indicator to signal the federal reserve has completed its interest rate hike cycle. The core consumer price index, which does not include food and energy prices, rose by 0.2% in October. The core gauge is seen by economists as a more accurate reflection of true inflation than the headline CPI.

US House passes spending bill to avert government shutdown

The US House of Representatives on Tuesday (November 14) passed a stopgap spending bill aimed at averting the holiday-season government shutdown. The bill will now move to the Senate and when passed, will go to President Joe Biden for his assent. The government funding runs dry this Friday, November 17.

The threat of a government shutdown isn't completely averted but the passage of the stopgap spending bill is a step towards the direction of averting such an event that would leave government workers without money just around Thanksgiving and Congress not being able to address the Ukraine and Israel situations.

A rare US postage stamp was auctioned for a record $2 million in New Yorkto Charles Hack, a 76-year-old stamp collector who is now a proud owner of the famous red, white and blue “Inverted Jenny” stamp which dates back to 1918.

The United States and China, the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitters, will back a new global renewables target and work together to tackle methane and plastic pollution, said the two countries in a joint statement following talks in California. The statement follows a meeting last week to find common ground ahead of COP28 talks in Dubai later this month.

Sunnylands Statement

American climate envoy John Kerry and his Chinese counterpart Xie Zhenhua have agreed to revive a bilateral climate working group following meetings in Sunnylands, California between November 4 and 7, which will discuss areas of cooperation between the two countries.

The working group, according to the Sunnylands statement, will focus on several areas of cooperation, including “circular economy and resource efficiency, low-carbon and sustainable provinces/states & cities, and deforestation”.

The two countries also said that they would step up coordination on curbing emissions of methane – climate-warming greenhouse gas – which Beijing is said to be the biggest producer of with over 14 per cent of global emissions.

The US and China will also work together to ramp up efforts to transition away from fossil fuels and exchange information on policies and technologies to reduce emissions.

The relaunch of the working group also marks the normalisation of the climate relationship between China and the US after a hiatus triggered by the visit of former House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, the self-governing island that China claims as its territory.

The statement was also released as Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in California’s San Francisco ahead of the much-anticipated meeting with President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the 30th Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.

Xi's arrival on Wednesday (Nov 15) marks his first visit to the US in six years, as both nations have sought to ease tensions.

Agreement ahead of COP28

“The Sunnylands statement is a timely effort of aligning the United States and China ahead of COP28,” said Li Shuo, incoming director of the China Climate Hub at the Asia Society, as quoted by Reuters.

Li described the relationship between the world’s two biggest greenhouse gas emitters as “a precondition for meaningful global progress” and said the Sunnylands agreement will help “stabilise the politics” ahead of Dubai talks.

The 28th meeting of the United Nations “Conference of the Parties” on climate, also known as COP28, is set to take place from November 30 to December 12 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

China – which ranks as the world’s largest emitter of carbon dioxide – will be in sharp focus at the upcoming conference as it has sought to lower carbon emissions but recently approved new coal-fired power plants in a bid to ensure energy security.

Sunnylands Statement American climate envoy John Kerry and his Chinese counterpart Xie Zhenhua have agreed to revive a bilateral climate working group following meetings in Sunnylands, California between November 4 and 7, which will discuss areas of cooperation between the two countries. The working group, according to the Sunnylands statement, will focus on several areas of cooperation, including “circular economy and resource efficiency, low-carbon and sustainable provinces/states & cities, and deforestation”. Releases 'ambiguous' methane reduction plan The two countries also said that they would step up coordination on curbing emissions of methane – climate-warming greenhouse gas – which Beijing is said to be the biggest producer of with over 14 per cent of global emissions. Agreement ahead of COP28 “The Sunnylands statement is a timely effort of aligning the United States and China ahead of COP28,” said Li Shuo, incoming director of the China Climate Hub at the Asia Society, as quoted by Reuters. ALSO READ | APEC Summit: China’s Xi arrives in US to meet Biden: Here are seven key focus areas Li described the relationship between the world’s two biggest greenhouse gas emitters as “a precondition for meaningful global progress” and said the Sunnylands agreement will help “stabilise the politics” ahead of Dubai talks. U.S. consumer prices remained unchanged in October, signalling a potential easing of concerns over rising inflation and leading to renewed hopes that the Federal Reserve might halt further interest rate hikes. According to Reuters, the data, released by the Labour Department's Bureau of Labour Statistics, revealed that the annual increase in underlying inflation was the smallest in two years, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing economic narrative.

The report showed a notable decline in gasoline prices, contributing to the stagnant Consumer Price Index (CPI), a shift from the 0.4 per cent rise observed in September. The unexpected softness in inflation figures prompted a positive reaction in financial markets, with U.S. Treasury yields dipping and a subsequent rally in the stock market.

The development, combined with recent data indicating a slowdown in job and wage growth, is seen as reinforcing the notion that the economy might evade a potential recession.

Christopher Rupkey, Chief Economist at FWDBONDS, told Reuters, "The Fed always wants to see more progress, but it is looking like the inflation battle has rounded the corner." Rupkey further expressed optimism that the economy could navigate away from a recession while experiencing lower inflation. The encouraging signs in the CPI, including a 5.0 per cent drop in gasoline prices, highlight the potential impact on broader economic dynamics.

Despite a year-on-year consumer price rise of 3.2 per cent in October, down from 3.7 per cent in September, concerns persist as inflation continues to surpass the Fed's 2 per cent target. Analysts suggest that the recent disinflationary trend might not be sustained indefinitely, given the strong economy and a relatively tight labour market.

While expectations of an imminent end to the Fed's monetary policy tightening campaign have gained traction, Fed Chair Jerome Powell remains according to Reuters. He said, "if it becomes appropriate to tighten policy further, we will not hesitate to do so."

Financial markets are seemingly anticipating a rate cut as early as May, according to CME Group's FedWatch tool. The Federal Reserve has implemented a robust monetary tightening campaign since March 2022, resulting in a 525 basis points increase to the current 5.25 per cent -5.50 per cent range. The prospect of a shift in monetary policy has driven Treasury prices higher, with the yield on the two-year note reaching a two-week low. The dollar has depreciated against a basket of currencies, and Wall Street stocks are trading notably higher.

The CPI report also shed light on specific sectors, including a 0.3 per cent increase in food prices, driven by higher costs for meat, fish, and eggs. However, the overall encouraging inflation data, coupled with slowing rent increases and subdued goods deflation, suggests a potential positive trajectory for the U.S. economy.
