United Kingdom has broken its previous record for coal-free power generation since the Industrial Revolution.

Coal-fired plants have not contributed to the generation of electricity in the British grids for 18 consecutive days.

This stretch has broken the country's previous record, which was set on 4 June 2019, partly because of a collapse in demand for electricity during the coronavirus lockdown because schools, shops, factories and restaurants have closed.

Britain passed the grim milestone of over 20,000 COVID-19 deaths on Saturday, as the daily toll rose 813 to 20,319 people who tested positive for the illness and died in hospital.

The government is facing growing criticism over its response to the new coronavirus pandemic as the death toll rises. Britain was slower to impose a lockdown than European peers and is struggling to raise its testing capacity.

The country has the fifth-highest official coronavirus death toll in the world, after the United States, Italy, Spain and France. Scientists have said that the death rate will only start to decline quickly in another couple of weeks.

The total number of deaths is likely to be thousands higher with the addition of more comprehensive but lagging figures that include deaths in nursing homes. As of April 10, the hospital toll was short of the overall toll by around 40%.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is still recovering after falling seriously ill with COVID-19 earlier this month and in his absence, government ministers have been struggling to explain high death rates, limited testing and shortages of protective equipment for medical workers and carers.

Health ministry data published on Saturday showed that 28,760 tests were carried out on 24 April. That is likely to put further pressure on the government given its target of hitting 100,000 tests per day by the end of April is just days away.

There are concerns that limited testing could mean a slow exit from lockdown and a worse hit for Britain's economy, the world's fifth largest.

Earlier on Saturday, Stephen Powis, the medical director of the National Health Service (NHS) in England, declined to give a new number for how many deaths could now be expected, but told BBC Radio:

"It will take some time, it may take many years, before the full effect of the pandemic is known in this country."

Striking a positive note, Powis added the NHS had not been overwhelmed in the way that hospitals in some other countries have been. Healthcare providers were now preparing to ramp up non-coronavirus treatments, such as restarting planned surgeries.

"As we are now beginning to see a decline, a decrease, in the number of patients with coronavirus, it is absolutely the time to start building up our services again," he said.

UK government faces flak over COVID-19 response

As COVID crisis impacts the UK in a major way, the Indian mission in the UK is reaching out to the Indian community in several ways including working with diaspora organisation to provide subsidised accommodation and food to stranded Indians.

Speaking to WION's diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, Indian High commissioner to UK Ruchi Ghanashyam said, the Indian mission has set up a team of officers at the mission who are in touch with Indians who need medical assistance and for Indian students, "guidance is in place for their non-eviction".

The envoy also said Indian won't be unfairly penalised and UK visas stand extended for May 31.

Here's the full interview:

Sidhant Sibal: How are India and UK collaborating on COVID-19 crisis?

Ruchi Ghanashyam: India and the UK are working closely to address the humanitarian crisis emanating from COVID-19 pandemic and to find ways to minimize the impact of this crisis on our economies. India has supplied essential medicines such as paracetamol for the friendly people of the UK despite increasing domestic demand for medicines in India. India has also extended full support to the UK government’s evacuation efforts to bring British citizens back. These steps underline India’s commitment to work with the UK during this unprecedented crisis. I thank the UK government for responding to our call to help Indian citizens, including a large number of students, stranded in the UK whose visas were expiring. Clear guidance has been made available to Indian citizens in the UK for extension of their visas. Guidance is also available for international students regarding their stay in university hostels and helpful guidance is in place for their non-eviction. India and the UK are strategic partners and work closely in multilateral fora including the G20, to address global concerns and challenges. Recently, on March 26, India and the UK attended the Extraordinary G20 Leaders’ Summit. The Summit saw G20 commitment to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and safeguard the global economy. We consult each other, as required, on issues concerning a collective G20 response to COVID-19 challenge.

SS: How is the Indian mission taking care of the Indians and many students stranded in the country and the city of London?

RG: Thousands of Indian citizens including students, short term visa holder professionals, businesspersons and tourists, and many others are unable to go back to India due to COVID-19 related travel restrictions. The main challenges facing the High Commission were to be able to address concerns of the stranded Indians which related to accommodation, food, medicines/healthcare, and visa extension.

Two emergency helplines: +44 7768765035 / +44 7739363521 and two emails - inf.london@mea.gov.in / info.london@mea.gov.in are kept operational 24X7. We are also in touch with Indian citizens through our website, Twitter and Facebook.

High Commission is updating Indian citizens in the UK about advisories issued by the government of India and the UK on various issues such as visa extension, COVID-19 helpline of NHS, UK Government’s guidelines about non-eviction policy, and visa extension guidelines, which are of interest to our people in these circumstances.

Given that Indian citizens in need of accommodation and food are spread across the UK, the High Commission has worked with diaspora organisations, student associations, community support groups and individuals across the UK so that assistance may be provided to stranded Indian citizens in terms of subsidised accommodation and food. I am deeply touched that a large number of such organisations, associations and establishments in the UK have come forward to help stranded Indian nationals, including Indian students, in need of assistance with food or reasonably priced accommodation. Details of such associations and establishments are available on our website or social media platforms. Mission’s officers are in touch with these help groups and organizations. There are also challenges that people face in accessing medical services. Indians on short term visits to UK ran out of their prescription medicines and found that their Indian prescriptions are not valid in the UK. Other Indian citizens approached us requiring other medical help. To address these challenges, we approached the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (BAPIO). We now have a list of multiple options for medical assistance. The first option is medical help through BAPIO. The second is of telephonic consultation through Jain Vishwa Bharti – a registered charity. The third option is a private hospital which can provide consultation through an app and also have the service of medicine delivery in 24 hours. The mission’s panel doctors also help Indians and provide medical guidance. These options are helpful to stranded Indians as the National Health Service of UK is under tremendous stress due to COVID19 outbreak. NHS has also issued clear guidance regarding testing/ treatment for COVID19. We have set up a team of officers in the High Commission to stay in touch with the Indian citizens who need medical assistance. In these times, anxiety and stress are very natural. We have, therefore, put up videos and other advisories of the AYUSH Ministry to guide people about the simple preventive measures available to them in the Indian traditional medicinal system. Yoga is also an effective stress buster and a potent system to boost overall health. Videos from ‘Yoga with Modi’ on YouTube have been made available on our social media platforms. We hope that people will use these to boost health and well-being.

SS: What do you have to say on visa issues are something that has been a worry for Indians? And how much pressure Indian mission is under, given that globally we have seen how Indian diplomats are risking lives in worst impacted areas?

RS: Expiry of visas has been among the main concerns of Indians in the UK in the wake of COVID19 related travel restrictions. The High Commission worked with the UK authorities at the very beginning of the lockdown for extension of visas of short-term visitors and individuals stranded due to COVID19 related travel restrictions. Foreign office has given us an assurance that 'Indian nationals in the UK do not need to be concerned about their immigration status. No one will be unfairly penalised for events beyond their control as a result of COVID-19. I appreciate that the UK government has extended visas till 31st May 2020 and have issued clear guidance in this regard. We remain in regular touch with the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office to address any challenges faced by our nationals in the UK.

Also read | Coronavirus cases in India jump to 15,712; more than 500 dead The envoy also said Indian won't be unfairly penalised and UK visas stand extended for May 31. Here's the full interview: Sidhant Sibal: How are India and UK collaborating on COVID-19 crisis? A 99-year-old war veteran in the United Kingdom who has started raising funds for Britain's health services by walking has said he would continue to walk till people keep donating as the amount for his cause surpassed 11 million pounds.

"We set out originally to raise a little bit of money by me walking up and down 100 times in reference to my 100th birthday," Captain Tom Moore told Sky News.

"But if I've done the 100 by tomorrow, I'll have to continue past my birthday, which won't matter because I'll continue walking while people are contributing money to a marvellous fund for the NHS."

Moore, who will be turning 100 next month and is walking in his garden for the cause had initially planned to raise 1000 pounds, but within 24 hours of its beginning, a sum of 70,000 pounds was donated.

For the cause, Moore covers 10 laps of the garden a day with the help of his walking aid and had planned to hit 100 laps in time for his birthday on 30 April.

Describing novel coronavirus as an "invisible enemy", Moore asks everyone to "look forward to the future when we've beaten this enemy".

"Whatever people think, we shall get better. Things will be better tomorrow," he added.

Over 1,000 people who died of the coronavirus in care homes across the United Kingdom may not have been accounted for in the official death toll.

As per the numbers released by the Office for National Statistics, only 20 people had died in care hames across England and Wales up to March 27.

This stands in stark opposition to the data released by two agencies in the country, which claimed over 200 deaths in such care homes.

Pro-European centrist Keir Starmer was on Saturday unveiled as new Labour party leader, heralding a shift in Britain's main opposition party after a crushing election defeat under veteran socialist Jeremy Corbyn and years of ideological infighting. The 57-year-old former chief state prosecutor defeated Corbyn loyalist Rebecca Long-Bailey and backbencher Lisa Nandy in a lengthy campaign sparked by Corbyn's resignation after December's loss at the polls to Boris Johnson's Conservatives. Angela Rayner becomes the new deputy leader, Labour announced on Twitter, after it was forced to cancel a special conference because of the coronavirus outbreak. Starmer, who was Labour's Brexit spokesman, called his election "the honour and privilege" of his life and vowed to "engage constructively" with Johnson's Conservative government. Johnson immediately offered his congratulations and the pair spoke, with Starmer accepting an invitation to a government briefing on COVID-19 next week. "Keir offered to work constructively with the government on how best to respond to the coronavirus outbreak," his spokesman said. Starmer himself vowed to reunite Labour, after deep rifts between supporters of socialist Corbyn's hard-left ideals and centrists, and wrangling over its Brexit strategy. He immediately addressed the issue of anti-Semitism that Corbyn was accused of failing to tackle, which tarnished the party's reputation and caused Jewish members to leave in droves. "Anti-Semitism has been a stain on our party. I have seen the grief that it's brought to so many Jewish communities," Starmer said. "On behalf of the Labour Party, I am sorry. "And I will tear out this poison by its roots and judge success by the return of Jewish members and those who felt that they could no longer support us." Starmer, who won a resounding 56.2 percent of the vote of Labour members, acknowledged the party had "a mountain to climb", after four straight general election defeats -- two under Corbyn. But he vowed: "We will climb it." He added: "I will lead this great party into a new era, with confidence and with hope. "So that when the time comes, we can serve our country again in government."

Dealing with coronavirus is definitely tough. However, in such harsh times, a four-year-old's story has taken social media by storm.

In the video, Joanne Charlton, mother of Layla, told her daughter that Nando's and KFC are also closed. The already dejected Layla started crying after knowing this.

"Are Chinese (food outlets) closed too," the four-year-old said.

The mother replied that the Chinese eateries are also closed, adding that now she had to eat home-cooked food.

Layla's crying continued despite the consoling by Joanne.

"Pizza Hut is closed too," the mother further told her daughter.

Joanne, though considered the whole situation hilarious and called her daughter "drama queen" to share it with family and friends.

She posted the video on Facebook which received over 135,00 likes, comments, and shares.

The mother explained the incident that the little one got "bored" because of the isolation.

"I had been saying all day that we were going to have one last McDonald's and I thought I haven’t really been telling her why I kept saying that," Joanne said.

She said that she didn't want to lie to her kid about the pandemic.

"She knows Boris Johnson by now and she says to me 'mummy does Boris Johnson say we can go to the park today' and I tell her I'm going to have to speak to him to see what he says."

Joanne was explaining to her daughter why Johnson is shutting down places and when she got to know that McDonald would be closed for long, Layla started crying and the mother picked up her phone to record the video.

In the end, Joanne said, Layla "just cuddled me and then went upstairs to bed and called her nana".

Member of London Assembly Navin shah, who landed in India on March 8th, is stuck here due to suspension of flights to Europe and UK. Speaking to WION's Ayushi Agarwal, he asked what the British foreign office was doing to repatriate British citizens like him who are stuck in foreign countries. He also spoke about the ground situation in the UK and what does he expect from the governments of India and the UK. WION: As a people's representative from the UK, you are here and stuck, so what is the solution that you are looking at and what is your expectation from the government? Where is the clarity required? Navin Shah- My wife and I, both elected members from the UK, came to India because of family bereavement on March 8th but are now stranded due to cancellation of international flights till March 31st. We are lucky that we have a family with whom we are staying. Thankfully we are in great health and are vigilant but also observing total self-isolation and feel as safe as one can be in these exceptional circumstances. WION: As a lawmaker and as a political leader of the UK, who knows India and UK well, what do you think the government can/should do? What is the exact problem that is being faced by people like you who are crisscrossing countries? Navin Shah- The problems for foreign nationals like us who are stranded are in a way two-fold. One is how the Indian government can support them to sustain and be safe whilst they are here. However, it is the British Foreign Office who has responsibility for British citizens. They need to have a clear policy and plan for urgent repatriation of British citizens stuck in foreign countries. Also, the questions is that what is the role of British High Commission here in India and for that matter in other countries as well who need to contact their national and make them aware of what the British government is doing to take them back to the UK and once they are there how well they are protected. WION: What do you have to say about the ground situation in the UK which seems going out of control? Can you also comment on the way the UK is progressing? Navin Shah- I'm closely following through the media what is being done in the UK by the government there and am content with their directions so far. I don't believe that the situation there is out of control. From my first-hand knowledge, I feel reassured that the Mayor of London is doing everything he can to work with the PM and agencies to keep Londoners safe. This is a very complex problem and a big challenge for all governments. We need to be vigilant. WION: How do you think the UK and India, can help each other in such a situation? Navin Shah- It is upon all countries to work together to attack the biggest ever threat faced by the humankind and that is why there is need to co-operate, learn lessons from situation in other countries -good practices for saving lives. We have to look at this issue comprehensively. There is also a challenge on how people who are trapped in foreign countries are repatriated. We need strategic plans which is an international plan who are stranded can expect from their respective countries. We should follow their guidelines to make sure of safety. Follow simple principle: Stay safe - stay home.
