The statue of a slave trader, which was earlier toppled, has now been fished out of the harbour as many monuments in the United Kingdom are set to be reviewed amid the nationwide anger against symbols of racism.

Earlier today, the city council said the statue of Edward Colston was retrieved early on Thursday morning and "is being taken to a secure location before later forming part of our museum collection".

The outlook for Britain's coronavirus-blighted labour market is at its bleakest for almost 30 years despite the easing lockdown, a survey showed Tuesday.

Employment consultancy ManpowerGroup revealed the outcome of a survey of 1,056 UK employers, which comes as Britain continues to relax its COVID-19 lockdown.

"Hiring intentions for the third quarter of 2020 are down to minus 12 percent, with a sharp drop across all major sectors," ManpowerGroup said in a statement, noting this was the worst level since it began the survey in 1992.

On a more optimistic note, ManpowerGroup added that most UK businesses expected to return to normality over the next twelve months.

"Employers remain cautiously optimistic that this will be temporary with ... 57 percent of employers expecting to return to pre-COVID-19 hiring levels by this time next year."

Mark Cahill, managing director of ManpowerGroup UK, noted the data showed "unprecedented" disruption from the disease, which has killed more than 40,000 in Britain.

"While there's no getting away from the challenges that lie ahead, the data underlines the resilience of UK employers," Cahill said.

Winston Churchill is considered as a celebrated statesman and a hero of the free world.

Churchill, the UK's wartime prime minister, saved his country and the world from a Nazi invasion.

However, to the outside world, he was hardly better than Hitler, and the West regarded him as a fierce imperialist.

Churchill's racism is well-documented and he once even wrote, "I hate Indians".

He stopped all food supplies to India and was a major reason why four million people starved to death in Bengal in the same year.

"It's (Indians) their own fault...for breeding like rabbits," Churchill had said.

He was also a supporter of gas bombs and during the Arab Uprising in 1920, he lamented the 'squeamishness' of his colleagues who were not in favour of using poisoned gas against the so-called "uncivilised tribes".

In the same year, Churchill sent the blacks and tans into Ireland who were tasked with terrorising the Irish rebellion.

"A stronger race, a high-grade race, a more worldly-wise race has come in and taken their place."

Churchill also planted the seed in South Africa to strip black communities from their voting rights.

Despite all of this, Britain is blinded by its excessive admiration of Churchill, who is also a hero of Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Demand for puppies in the United Kingdom has surged amid the coronavirus-induced lockdown.

British breeders reported an increased interest in buying puppies, given the lockdown. For the last three months, people in the country had been confined to their homes.

During this time, one organisation “Kennel Club” reported over 180 per cent increase in inquiries from people wiling to buy dogs.

However, analysts believe that many of these dogs/pups may end up abandoned once social activity resumes and people understand the gravity of responsibility that comes with it.

Many breeders told Reuters that they feared for the future of the pups, saying that many families bought dogs to keep their kids or themselves entertained during the lockdown. However, they may or may not have thought about the effort, money that goes into raising the animal.

Based on this, breeders in the country have come up with a filtering process whereby they do a thorough background check on interested buyers and then ascertain the validity of the purchase. If it feels like a loose plan, the breeders reject the inquiries.

This is mostly owing to the fear that these dogs will end up in rescue centres as the country begins to reopen.

"Generally it's 'I want a blue-eyed, black and white Siberian. I want a boy, how much is it and can I collect it tomorrow?'", Christine Biddlecombe who breeds Siberian Husky dogs with her husband Stephen, told Reuters.

Biddlecombe added that the number of inquiries about dogs had increased.

To filter out non-serious buyers, many breeders have hiked the prices or have put other background checking mechanisms in place.

Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Wednesday addressed the murder of George Floyd by the police in the US city of Minneapolis which has spurred a series of protests, not only in the country, but across the world.

"I think what happened in the United States was appalling, inexcusable," Johnson said in the parliament.

"We all saw it on our screens and I perfectly understand people's right to protest what took place," he added.

"Obviously I also believe that protests should take place in a lawful and reasonable way”, the PM said.

However, Johnson was reluctant on commenting on Trump’s response and his thoughts on the same. Currently, the US is expected to make post-Brexit deal with the UK.

The murder has triggered protests across all US states, including major cities like New York and Los Angeles. Worldwide protests also followed in New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Protesters chanting “I can’t breathe” with signs saying “Black Lives Matter” have flooded the streets. A lot of violence has also been reported, with police officers being shot at, and looting of stores caught in the storm.

Floyd, an unarmed African-American, died last week after a police officer in the US city Minneapolis knelt on his neck, an incident captured on video by a witness. The officer concerned has been charged with second-degree murder.

"We stand alongside all those across the globe who are appalled and horrified by the way George Floyd lost his life," British police chiefs also said in a statement.

"Justice and accountability should follow… We are also appalled to see the violence and damage that has happened in so many US cities since then”, the statement added.

The police chiefs appealed for people in Britain to "work with officers" as protests mount over Floyd's killing, just as a nationwide coronavirus lockdown is being eased.

"Britain is no stranger to racialised police violence," it noted.

"Black and minority ethnic people are disproportionately represented in the criminal justice system at every level, from arrests to stop and search, to imprisonment, to deaths in custody."

Floyd was accused of using a counterfeit 20 Dollar bill to buy cigarettes. When the police arrived, an officer Chauvin who has now been charged with murder, pinned him to the ground with his knee stationed on his neck, which led to his death.

It was only when bystanders insisted on checking his pulse, that the policeman let go, after which Floyd was escorted away in an ambulance. An hour later, he was pronounced dead.

Data compiled by “Mapping Police Violence” of all police killings in 2019 across the US reveals that black Americans are three times more likely to be killed during their interaction with the police than white Americans.

The artist Celos paints a mural in Downtown Los Angeles on May 30, 2020 in protest against the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died while while being arrested and pinned to the ground by the knee of a Minneapolis police officer. | AFP "We stand alongside all those across the globe who are appalled and horrified by the way George Floyd lost his life," British police chiefs also said in a statement. "Black and minority ethnic people are disproportionately represented in the criminal justice system at every level, from arrests to stop and search, to imprisonment, to deaths in custody." When the police arrived, an officer Chauvin who has now been charged with murder, pinned him to the ground with his knee stationed on his neck, which led to his death. Britain urged China to rethink its plans and the strategy therein to assert more control over Hong Kong, which was earlier British territory, and was handed back to China under special terms - including democratic freedoms.

"There is time for China to reconsider," UK’s Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said while referring to the new security laws, which have spurred protests across the city.

On Tuesday, the United States may let in people living in Hong Kong amid the ongoing China-Hong Hong crisis, which has spurred protests across the city.

The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said his country will let in those who aren’t “comfortable” in Hong Kong. The US has continuously called China’s actions an attempt to subvert democracy in the territory.

'Step back': United Kingdom hits out at China's attempts to assume control of Hong Kong

The United Kingdom is planning to initiate a global dialogue on acknowledging and dealing with the Hong Kong-China crisis.

Protests rocked the financial hub last year over China’s now-panned extradition bill. If it had passed, the bill would have allowed criminals to be sent to mainland China from Hong Kong. However, protests became violent and the bill was scrapped.

From that, the protest evolved into a larger call for democracy in Hong Kong and commitment to “One Country, Two Systems” model which guarantees democratic freedoms to the city.

Recently, China approved a new security law which criminalises “undermining the authority” of Beijing and introduces provisions of treason and sedition, in a bid to deal with “terrorism” in the city. The city again erupted into protests on the streets, while the country recovers from the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Now, seven former UK foreign secretaries have requested Boris Johnson to formally take note of the issue.

As part of the 1997 agreement, Hong Kong was returned to China on specific terms and conditions. For instance, the city enjoys a mini-constitution of its own, called the Basic Law which guarantees privileges not available in mainland China.

While talking about China’s actions and denouncing them as a “breach” of the agreement, the ministers - Jeremy Hunt, David Miliband, Jack Straw, William Hague, Malcolm Rifkind, David Owen and Margaret Beckett called for a coordinated international response.

A Downing Street spokesman told BBC that the new legislation “clearly violates” the freedom enshrined in Hong Kong’s constitution. He further said that the UK will further make it easy for people with an overseas British passport from Hong Kong to attain Uk citizenship.

British Prime Minister addressed the nation to announce the strategy of easing coronavirus-induced lockdowns across the country. The country had recently crossed Italy’s death toll to become the second-most affected country after the United states.

As part of a transition from “Stay home” to “Stay alert”, the new measures are introduced to facilitate reopening places of social interaction as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to kill people, but has showed signs of slowing down in the country.

“This statement raises more questions than it answers, and we see the prospect of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland pulling in different directions”, he further said.

“The prime minister appears to be effectively telling millions of people to go back to work without a clear plan for safety or clear guidance as to how to get there without using public transport”, he added.

During his address, the Prime Minister explained relaxations of lockdown rules, but only applying to England. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland had recently rejected his calls for easing the lockdown measures. If we as a nation begin to fulfil the conditions I have set out, then in the next few weeks and months we may be able to go further. We are driven by the science, the data and public health. It depends on all of us – the entire country – to #StayAlert to keep the R down. pic.twitter.com/KuiPs7mQL8 — Boris Johnson #StayAlert (@BorisJohnson) May 10, 2020 × While asking people to work from home, he added that workers in industries like construction and manufacturing should be able to return to work starting Monday. At the same time, he asserted the need to avoid public transport. Starting May 13, people in England will be able to visit parks, play sports, have access to sporting clubs and a lot more, but only if a two-metre distance is ensured between any two people. Shops that do not necessarily sell essential products will be able to reopen starting June 1, the PM signalled. Schools may also start to reopen around the same time. Moving on to July, he added that restaurants, cinemas, and places of worship may be able to reopen then. The announcement was viewed as somewhat confusing. For starters, the workers received only a 12-hour notice to start returning to work. This, many feared, could trigger chaos. Britain Housing Minister Robert Jenrick said on Sunday said that UK wants to restart the economy slowly cautiously ahead of a televised address from the prime minister.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to announce plans to begin easing the coronavirus lockdown measures later in the day.

It has been nearly seven weeks since Johnson asked Britons to stay at home to help prevent the spread of the virus, all but shutting down the economy.

"The message ... of staying at home now does need to be updated, we need to have a broader message because we want to slowly and cautiously restart the economy and the country," Jenrick told Sky News.

Jenrick said the easing of the lockdown would be conditional on keeping the spread of the virus under control, and if the rate of infection begins to increase in some areas, more stringent measures could be re-introduced.
