Elon Musk, the world’s richest man and the ‘Chief Troll Officer’ at X, has supported India’s bid to have a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Musk said in a post that it was absurd the most populous country on the planet is not fairly represented at the UN body. He added that Africa should also have a collective seat at the UN.

“At some point, there needs to be a revision of the UN bodies. Problem is that those with excess power don’t want to give it up,” Musk wrote in the post.

“India not having a permanent seat on the Security Council, despite being the most populous country on Earth, is absurd. Africa collectively should also have a permanent seat imo,” he added.

Earlier, in a post on X, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also made an appeal to the P5 nations to implement reforms at the elite table. As of now, the P5 or five permanent members—Russia, the UK, China, France, and the United States—hold veto power over any substantial resolution.&nbsp;

‘Revision needed,’ Elon Musk throws weight behind India’s bid for permanent seat at UNSC

The World Health Organization chief fears plans for a global pandemic preparedness agreement will fall apart amid wrangling and disinformation, warning on Monday that future generations "may not forgive us".

Shaken by the COVID-19 pandemic, the WHO's 194 member states decided more than two years ago to start negotiating an international accord aimed at ensuring countries are better equipped to deal with the next health catastrophe, or to prevent it altogether.

The plan was to seal the agreement at the 2024 World Health Assembly, the WHO's decision-making body, which convenes on May 27.

But WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the momentum had been slowed down by entrenched positions and "a torrent of fake news, lies, and conspiracy theories".

And he warned that if nobody is prepared to seize the initiative or give ground, the whole project risks going nowhere.

"Time is very short. And there are several outstanding issues that remain to be resolved," Tedros told the WHO's executive board in Geneva.

Failure to strike an agreement would be "a missed opportunity for which future generations may not forgive us," he said.

Tedros said all countries needed the capacity to detect and share pathogens presenting a risk, and timely access to tests, treatments and vaccines.

He called for a "strong agreement that will help to protect our children and grandchildren from future pandemics".

Tedros said claims that the accord would cede sovereignty to the WHO or give it the power to impose lockdowns and vaccine mandates were "completely false".

The tourism industry is getting back to full flight, according to a new report by the World&nbsp;Tourism&nbsp;Organization (WTO). The UN agency said international tourism levels will be slightly higher than the pre-pandemic levels in 2024, primarily due to a resurgence in Asia.&nbsp;

The pent-up demand, increased air connectivity and a stronger recovery of Asian markets and destinations are expected to contribute to a full recovery of the sector by the end of 2024. Initial estimates suggest that the recovery will be 2 per cent above than 2019 levels.&nbsp;

"The latest UNWTO data underscores tourism's resilience and rapid recovery, with pre-pandemic numbers expected by the end of 2024. The rebound is already having a significant impact on economies, jobs, growth and opportunities for communities everywhere," said&nbsp;UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili.

In 2023, Asia and the Pacific reached 65 per cent of pre-pandemic levels, following the reopening of several attractive destinations. South Asia contributed majorly to the figure&nbsp;by reaching 87 per cent recovery of 2019 levels while North-East Asia hovered at around 55 per cent.&nbsp;

The Madrid-based agency said there is still "significant room for recovery across Asia" and that "&nbsp;reopening of several source markets and destinations will boost recovery in the region and globally".&nbsp;

The agency also said China's outbound and inbound tourism will accelerate in 2024 with better visa facilitation and improved air capacity. Last year in November, China applied visa-free travel for citizens of France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Malaysia on a trial basis till November 30, 2024.&nbsp;

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an "immediate humanitarian ceasefire" in the Gaza Strip as the conflict between Israel and Hamas surpasses 100 days.

Guterres stressed on&nbsp;the urgent need for a ceasefire to facilitate aid delivery, release hostages, and prevent further escalation.

"We need an immediate humanitarian ceasefire. To ensure sufficient aid gets to where it is needed. To facilitate the release of the hostages. To tamp down the flames of wider war because the longer the conflict in Gaza continues, the greater the risk of escalation and miscalculation," Guterres said at a press briefing in New York.

The war, triggered by a surprise Hamas attack on Israel, has led to a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, affecting 2.4 million people and leaving much of the territory in ruins.

<h2>Humanitarian catastrophe and displacement</h2>

The conflict, which began with Hamas'&nbsp;October 7 attack, resulted in approximately 1,140 deaths in Israel, mainly civilians, and the seizure of around 250 hostages by militants. Israel responded with a relentless military campaign, causing the death of at least 24,100 people in Gaza. Over three months of fighting have displaced roughly 85 per cent of Gaza's population, with people seeking refuge in shelters and struggling to access essential resources such as food, water, fuel, and medical care.

Guterres condemned the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza as "beyond words." He highlighted the significant displacement of UN Palestinian staff, with the majority fleeing their homes, and the loss of 152 staff members since October 7—the largest single loss of life in the UN's history. Aid deliveries face challenges reaching the traumatised population, leading to the looming threat of starvation in Gaza.

According to the United Nations Food Waste Programme, the kingdom tops the list of countries which contribute the most to food waste every year, accounting for up to 50 per cent of the waste.&nbsp;

Saudi Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, Abdul Rahman bin Abdul Mohsen Al Fadhli confirmed the UN’s findings while acknowledging the cost of food wastage.&nbsp;

According to the report, wasting food costs the kingdom SR40 billion ($10.6 billion) every year. The rate of food wastage exceeds 33 per cent, said the Saudi minister, referring to the data from the study conducted by the National Programme to Reduce Food Loss and Waste.

The country’s General Food Security Authority (GFSA) following the report’s release in October last year initiated a comprehensive awareness campaign to highlight the importance of food security and encourage responsible consumption practices, reported Gulf News.&nbsp;

A study by the Saudi Grains Organisation (Sago) last year found that 4.06 million tonnes of food is wasted each year, with an average individual contribution of about 184 kg&nbsp;of food waste.

The nationwide study also found that vegetable waste alone exceeds 335,000 tonnes annually.&nbsp;

WATCH | Saudi Arabia accounts for nearly half of world's annual food wastage Saudi Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, Abdul Rahman bin Abdul Mohsen Al Fadhli confirmed the UN’s findings while acknowledging the cost of food wastage. According to the report, wasting food costs the kingdom SR40 billion ($10.6 billion) every year. The rate of food wastage exceeds 33 per cent, said the Saudi minister, referring to the data from the study conducted by the National Programme to Reduce Food Loss and Waste. The country’s General Food Security Authority (GFSA) following the report’s release in October last year initiated a comprehensive awareness campaign to highlight the importance of food security and encourage responsible consumption practices, reported Gulf News. India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar believes taking the Kashmir issue to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in 1948 was an error and that by abrogating Article 370, New Delhi closed a "window of vulnerability" which it had been "foolish enough" to open.

India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar believes taking the Kashmir issue to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in 1948 was an error and that by abrogating Article 370, New Delhi closed a "window of vulnerability" which it had been "foolish enough" to open. According to Jaishankar, India, at the time, perceived the UNSC as a neutral arbiter whereas the Western voices on the table harboured a bias toward Pakistan and exploited India's vulnerability on the issue. "Today it is very clear, in fact not now, it was very clear by 1970s, that taking the Kashmir issue to the UN Security Council was a fundamental error because you are taking it at the court where the judges are all stacked against you. These were Western countries who had a bias towards Pakistan," said Jaishankar while speaking about his book 'Why Bharat Matters'. The external affairs minister speaking further said only if India had been hard-headed and had a "good sense of international politics", the call to knock on the UN's door would not have been taken. He added Article 370 had profound implications not just within the country but also on the country's foreign policy and it took decades to finally abrogate it. “We had a misreading of the world and sanctity of the UN, its impartiality and the Council being neutral arbitrators. We were taken for a ride by countries that had their geopolitical agendas set. As an issue of vulnerability, it was used against us and they continued to use it for decades. Article 370 was not just a call we had to take within the country, but had profound policy implications,” he added. Watch | Article 370 verdict LIVE: India PM Modi says, 'it's a beacon of hope...' on Article 370 Indian SC upholds abrogating Article 370 Jaishankar's statement comes a couple of weeks after the Indian Supreme Court delivered a historic verdict, approving the Union government's 2019 decision to abrogate Article 370. In a major development from Yemen, the warring parties in the long-running conflict in the Middle Eastern country committed to a new ceasefire and also agreed to engage in a UN-led peace process that would put an end to the fighting, the UN special envoy for Yemen released a statement saying on Saturday (Dec 23).

The envoy, Hans Grundberg, "welcomes the parties' commitment to a set of measures to implement a nation-wide ceasefire, improve living conditions in Yemen, and engage in preparations for the resumption of an inclusive political process under UN auspices," he said in a statement.&nbsp;

The decision was announced after a series of meetings with the parties in Saudi Arabia and Oman.

Yemen has been under the grip of the conflict since Iran-backed Houthis seized control of the capital Sanaa in the year 2014, which further triggered a Saudi-led military intervention in support of the beleaguered government the following year.

Last year, the United Nations brokered a ceasefire deal that came into effect in the month of April which further brought a sharp reduction in hostilities. The truce deal expired in October last year, though fighting largely remains on hold.

Grundberg will now "engage with the parties to establish a roadmap under UN auspices" that includes these commitments.

A North Korean nuclear reactor at the country's Yongbyon complex appears to be operating for the very first time, said the UN nuclear watchdog and independent experts on Thursday (Dec 21).

This indicates an additional potential source of plutonium for nuclear weapons.

North Korea for years has been using spent fuel from a 5-megawatt nuclear reactor at Yongbyon to produce plutonium for its nuclear arsenal but a telltale discharge of warm water from a larger light-water reactor suggests it is coming online, too, said the International Atomic Energy Agency in a statement.

"The discharge of warm water is indicative the reactor has reached criticality," IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said in a statement, meaning the nuclear chain reaction in the reactor is self-sustaining.

The IAEA lost access to North Korea since Pyongyang expelled its inspectors in the year 2009. The agency now observes the country mainly using satellite imagery.

Grossi further added that without the access, it was difficult for the IAEA to confirm the operational status of the reactor.

The IAEA in a statement said that it had recorded a strong outflow of water from the light-water reactor's cooling system since October, suggesting ongoing commissioning of the reactor.&nbsp;

Grossi further elucidating on the current status, said that there were recent indications pointing out that the water was warm.

"The LWR, like any nuclear reactor, can produce plutonium in its irradiated fuel, which can be separated during reprocessing, so this is a cause for concern," he said, adding that the advancement of North Korea's nuclear program was "deeply regrettable".

The researchers at the James Martain Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) in California also concluded that the reactor was most likely operating, adding that it may be "a significant source of nuclear material" for the nuclear weapons program, which is banned by United Nations Security Council resolutions.&nbsp;

In the report that came out in the month of April, the DC-based Institute for Science and International Security estimated the light-water reactor "could allow a surge in plutonium quantities at an estimated rate of about 20 kilograms of plutonium per year, a rate of four to five times larger than that of the small adjacent reactor".

The study suggested that North Korea may have anywhere from 31 to 96 nuclear warheads, depending on the types of devices being built and which fuel is being used.

A recent U.N. study reveals that the economic repercussions of the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza are poised to hit neighbouring Arab economies hard. The economic cost for Lebanon, Egypt, and Jordan is projected to soar to $10 billion this year, potentially pushing more than 230,000 people into poverty, according to the United Nations Development Programme. <o:p></o:p>

The conflict exacerbates existing fiscal pressures, sluggish growth, and high unemployment in the three Arab countries, deterring much-needed investment and impacting consumption and trade. Lebanon, already grappling with a deep economic crisis, faces further challenges.<o:p></o:p>

The study, commissioned by the United Nations Development Programme, indicates that the economic toll on the three Arab states, in terms of loss of GDP, could reach $10.3 billion or 2.3 per cent. The situation could worsen if the conflict persists, potentially doubling the economic impact over the next six months. <o:p></o:p>

Reuters cited Abdallah Al Dardari, U.N. assistant secretary-general and UNDP's Director of the Regional Bureau for Arab States, who underscored the severity of the situation, stating, "This is a massive impact. The crisis was a bomb in an already fragile regional situation... It soured sentiment with fear of what could happen and where things are going."<o:p></o:p>

The Israel-Hamas conflict, initiated by Israel's campaign to dismantle the Hamas militant group controlling Gaza, has inflicted unprecedented destruction. Israeli forces besieged the enclave, leading to extensive damage and a tragic loss of life. <o:p></o:p>

According to Palestinian health authorities, more than 18,000 people are confirmed killed, and many more are feared lost in the rubble. The mass displacement of almost 80 per cent of Gaza's population within a short period surpasses the scale of the decade-old Syrian conflict, marking a dire humanitarian crisis. <o:p></o:p>

"To lose 45-50 per cent of all housing in one month of fighting ... We have never seen anything like this ... the relationship between destruction level and time, it's unique," Reuters quoted Abdallah Al Dardari as saying.<o:p></o:p>

Al Dardari, who led the study, compared the pace of destruction in Gaza to the Syrian conflict, noting that it took Syria five years of fighting to reach a destruction level comparable to what Gaza experienced in just one month. <o:p></o:p>

Despite the ongoing conflict, Dardari's team is already engaging with development funds and multilateral financial institutions to outline post-war reconstruction scenarios for Gaza. He emphasised that this effort has commenced, indicating proactive steps toward recovery.<o:p></o:p>
