The world is facing a losing battle against electronic waste, said an&nbsp;UN expert on Wednesday (March 20),&nbsp;following a report revealing that 62 million tonnes of mobile phones and devices were discarded worldwide in just one year, with projections indicating a one-third increase by 2030.

Electronic waste, commonly known as e-waste, encompasses discarded items containing an electric plug or battery, often laden with toxic additives like mercury, posing significant environmental and health risks.

Kees Baldé, a senior scientific specialist at the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) Sustainable Cycles Programme, emphasised, "These products are frequently not easily repairable, leading to their swift disposal and consequent escalation of global waste generation. We're unequivocally losing the battle."

In 2022, the annual global e-waste output reached 62 million tonnes, marking an 82 per cent surge since 2010. The annual increase in e-waste generation stands at 2.6 million tonnes, potentially reaching 82 million tonnes by 2030.

Baldé expressed concern over the inadequate management of e-waste, highlighting its tendency to end up in landfills, including smaller items like mobile phones or toothbrushes discarded with residual waste.

Experts attribute this surge in e-waste to factors such as heightened consumption, limited repair options, shortened electronic lifecycles, and insufficient infrastructure for e-waste management.

Baldé also pointed out that even energy-efficient items like solar panels contribute to e-waste, with an estimated 600,000 tonnes discarded in 2022.

Cosmas Luckyson Zavazava, director of the Telecommunication Development Bureau at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), stressed the responsibility of manufacturers in ensuring product longevity and consumer satisfaction. He urged the private sector to adopt a responsible approach, envisioning themselves as good corporate citizens.

Notably, India's HDI score for 2022 witnessed an increase following a decline in the previous year and a stagnant trend in preceding years. With India's HDI in 1990 standing at 0.434, the 2022 score reflects a positive change of 48.4 per cent.

HDI assesses average achievements in three fundamental dimensions of human development: long and healthy life, access to education and a decent standard of living.

Caitlin Wiesen, the United Nations Development Programme's country representative, commented on India's progress in human development, highlighting significant advancements since 1990.

Notable achievements include a 9.1-year increase in life expectancy at birth, a rise of 4.6 years in expected years of schooling, and an increase of 3.8 years in mean years of schooling.

Additionally, India's GNI per capita has seen substantial growth, approximately amounting to a 287 per cent increase.

Report on Gender Inequality

The report also noted India's strides in reducing gender inequality, highlighting a Gender Inequality Index (GII) of 0.437, surpassing the global average. On the GII list, which evaluates countries based on reproductive health, empowerment, and labor market participation, India ranks 108 out of 166 nations.

India's performance in reproductive healthcare surpasses other countries in the 'medium HDI' category, with the adolescent birth rate in 2022 at 16.3 births per 1,000 women aged 15-19, an improvement from 17.1 in 2021. However, there remains a significant gap of 47.8% between men and women in labour force participation rates.

Caitlin Wiesen emphasised India's ongoing efforts to enhance citizens' quality of life, acknowledging progress while urging further advancements, particularly in women-led development. She emphasized the potential for socio-economic progress and a more equitable future through renewed focus.

The government attributes these improvements to a decisive agenda aimed at empowering women through policy initiatives geared toward long-term socio-economic and political development. The Ministry of Women and Child Development highlighted initiatives spanning women's lifecycles, including those focused on education, skill development, entrepreneurship, and workplace safety.

Global HDI Values

For the second consecutive year, global Human Development Index (HDI) values have declined, marking a first-time occurrence. The United Nations has raised concerns over the widening disparity between affluent and impoverished nations, attributing this crisis to the persistent impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mrunal Thakur is set to participate in an upcoming panel discussion titled Human Cost of Conflict-Related Sexual Violence, scheduled to take place on March 14, 2024 at the UN Headquarters, in New York.

Thakur has carved a niche for herself in the Indian film industry - both in Hindi as well as Telugu films in recent years. Some may recall, she had made her debut in the critically acclaimed film Love Sonia a few years back. The film sheds light on the grim reality of human trafficking.&nbsp;

Mrunal will not be present at the headquarters though and will join the panel virtually as she’s busy with promotional commitments for her upcoming film 'The Family Star' in India.&nbsp;

Her involvement underscores her commitment to addressing pressing global issues, particularly those related to the intersection of sexual violence and conflict.

The panel aims to explore the global context and impact of sexual violence in conflict zones, including its interlinkage with human trafficking. Since Mrunal has been part of Love Sonia which had her researching for a role in a character that was a victim of human trafficking, the actress is likely to share her experience of filming the project during the discussion.&nbsp;

Expressing her anticipation for the event, Mrunal Thakur remarked, "Being a part of this panel discussion is a profound honor for me. Love Sonia was not just a film; it was a journey into the darkest corners of humanity, shedding light on the unimaginable suffering endured by victims of human trafficking.
Through my role, I had the opportunity to delve deep into the complexities of this issue, and it has since become a cause that is incredibly close to my heart. Participating in this panel allows me to lend my voice to the collective effort of raising awareness and advocating for change. It's an opportunity to amplify the voices of those who have been silenced and to stand in solidarity with survivors of conflict-related sexual violence. I am deeply grateful for this platform and eager to contribute to the important conversations that lie ahead."

Joining Mrunal on the panel are distinguished speakers, including Masha Efrosinina, Fawzia Koofi, Cohav Elkayam Levy, Meaza Gebremedhin, and Areig Elhagwill. The event promises to be a platform for robust dialogue and advocacy on a global scale.

Amid the recent violence and deadly clashes between armed gangs and police in Haiti&nbsp;over the past week or so, the leader who heads an alliance of gangs, Jimmy Chérizier, also known as “Barbeque,” asked temporarily exiled Prime Minister Ariel Henry to either quit or threatened to plunge the Caribbean country into a civil war.&nbsp;

<h2>Who is Jimmy Chérizier?</h2>

Since Saturday (Mar 2), armed gang members have stormed Haiti’s largest prisons and released as many as 4,000 prisoners who have wreaked havoc in the capital Port-au-Prince and now control large swathes of the country.&nbsp;

WATCH |&nbsp;Who has answered to Haiti PM's call for international security support?

This was days after Chérizier, a former police officer turned gang leader who heads an alliance of gangs, called on criminal groups to unite and overthrow the PM. The 46-year-old gang leader was once an officer of the Haitian National Police force.&nbsp;

During his time as a police officer, Chérizier allegedly played a role in multiple massacres, including the one that led to the deaths of more than 70 people&nbsp;in 2018&nbsp;after over 400 homes in the capital’s La Saline neighbourhood were set ablaze, according to the United Nations.&nbsp;

The 46-year-old is one of the five gang leaders who face sanctions by the UN and the United States. Chérizier, as per Reuters, is originally from the Delmas area of Port-au-Prince.&nbsp;

In 2020, he brought together nine capital area gangs and created an alliance called, G9 Family and Allies, which is headed by him.&nbsp;

The G9 alliance made international headlines after it took control of Haiti’s main fuel port following the assassination of President Jovenel Moise&nbsp;in 2021.&nbsp;

The gang alliance essentially held the country hostage with this move which led to the halting of&nbsp;transport and hospitals losing their energy supplies. The blockade ended over a month later.&nbsp;

<h2>Threats of civil war and genocide</h2>

Henry, who assumed power after the assassination of Haiti’s last president, was supposed to step down in February. However, when he did not, deadly protests seeking his ouster erupted in the country’s capital last month.&nbsp;

“If Ariel Henry doesn’t resign, if the international community continues to support him, we’ll be heading straight for a civil war that will lead to genocide,” Chérizier told reporters in Port-au-Prince.&nbsp;

He added, “Either Haiti becomes a paradise or a hell for all of us. It’s out of the question for a small group of rich people living in big hotels to decide the fate of people living in working-class neighbourhoods."

In early February, thousands of Haitians took to the streets to protest the unelected government of the incumbent PM and called on him to resign.&nbsp;

This was after the February 7 deadline when Henry had promised to step down. Notably, Haitian presidents are also traditionally sworn into office on this date.&nbsp;

In December 2022, he signed a non-binding accord to step down by February 7, 2024, but has since insisted that security conditions must be re-established to hold free and fair elections.

“I think the time has arrived for all to put our heads together to save Haiti, to do things another way in our country,” Henry said on February 8 amid protests.&nbsp;

Henry said Haitians need peace, security, work and the ability to move freely around the country and pledged to hold general elections as soon as the country’s security issues are resolved.&nbsp;

<h2>What is happening in&nbsp;Haiti?</h2>

Over the last six days since the beginning of the fresh wave of violence in Haiti, thousands of inmates have escaped and armed gang members&nbsp;have laid siege to government sites in the capital, including two airports, police stations and a port.&nbsp;

Armed gangs also tried to take over the Toussaint Louverture International Airport, on Monday (Mar 4) and again on Tuesday (Mar 5), but it was not clear if they succeeded.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Henry emerged in Puerto Rico, a US territory, on Tuesday following&nbsp;his brief disappearance after the Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, refused permission for his plane to land.&nbsp;

Santo Domingo, on Wednesday (Mar 6) clarified that officials from Washington and Port-au-Prince had informally requested Henry’s plane make an “indefinite stopover” in their territory, which they said would not be possible.&nbsp;

Dominican authorities also said they will help restore normalcy in Haiti but “it is imperative that any action taken does not compromise our national security".

Meanwhile, Washington has said, that while they would not pressure the incumbent Haitian PM to leave, they have asked him to quickly come up with some form of plan for transition to a democratic government.&nbsp;

“We are not calling on him or pushing for him to resign, but we are urging him to expedite the transition,” State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller told reporters&nbsp;on Wednesday (Mar 6).&nbsp;

<h2>Humanitarian situation</h2>

The humanitarian situation in Haiti has been deteriorating long before the recent wave of violence. The number of people reported killed increased by more than 110 per cent in 2023 with at least 4,789 lives claimed, said the UN in a report released in January.&nbsp;

The UN also reported indiscriminate killings and kidnappings being carried out by gang members as well as abuses, including routine rape, torture and arson.&nbsp;

Since the beginning of this year, around 36,000 people have been displaced within the country, some 1,200 have been killed, and nearly 700 injured, according to the UN. &nbsp;

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk, on Wednesday, called for the “urgent deployment, with no further delay” of the planned security force, adding that “this situation is beyond untenable for the people of Haiti.”

Earlier this week, Henry travelled to Kenya to salvage the proposed security mission in the country which would be led by that East African nation and backed by the UN.

Meanwhile, the Dominican Republic has strengthened its border and said it will not set up refugee camps for fleeing Haitians.

“Armed gangs forced us to leave our homes. They destroyed our houses, and we’re on the streets,” Nicolas, who is living in a camp, told Reuters, saying that sleeping in such cramped conditions makes him feel like an animal.&nbsp;

Amid the recent violence and deadly clashes between armed gangs and police in Haiti over the past week or so, the leader who heads an alliance of gangs, Jimmy Chérizier, also known as “Barbeque,” asked temporarily exiled Prime Minister Ariel Henry to either quit or threatened to plunge the Caribbean country into a civil war. Who is Jimmy Chérizier? Since Saturday (Mar 2), armed gang members have stormed Haiti’s largest prisons and released as many as 4,000 prisoners who have wreaked havoc in the capital Port-au-Prince and now control large swathes of the country. WATCH | Who has answered to Haiti PM's call for international security support? This was days after Chérizier, a former police officer turned gang leader who heads an alliance of gangs, called on criminal groups to unite and overthrow the PM. The 46-year-old gang leader was once an officer of the Haitian National Police force. During his time as a police officer, Chérizier allegedly played a role in multiple massacres, including the one that led to the deaths of more than 70 people in 2018 after over 400 homes in the capital’s La Saline neighbourhood were set ablaze, according to the United Nations. The 46-year-old is one of the five gang leaders who face sanctions by the UN and the United States. Chérizier, as per Reuters, is originally from the Delmas area of Port-au-Prince. In 2020, he brought together nine capital area gangs and created an alliance called, G9 Family and Allies, which is headed by him. The gang alliance essentially held the country hostage with this move which led to the halting of transport and hospitals losing their energy supplies. The blockade ended over a month later. Threats of civil war and genocide Henry, who assumed power after the assassination of Haiti’s last president, was supposed to step down in February. However, when he did not, deadly protests seeking his ouster erupted in the country’s capital last month. “If Ariel Henry doesn’t resign, if the international community continues to support him, we’ll be heading straight for a civil war that will lead to genocide,” Chérizier told reporters in Port-au-Prince.
