Israel war: First international UN staff member killed in Gaza attack, revises total death toll

On Friday (May 10), the UN&nbsp;General Assembly voted to provide Palestine with additional "rights and privileges" and urged the Security Council to reconsider its request for membership in the United Nations. The resolution, sponsored by Arab and Palestinian representatives, was endorsed by the 193-member world body with a vote of 143-9, with 25 abstentions.

On April 18, the United States blocked a council resolution that enjoyed broad support, which wanted to facilitate Palestine's full membership in the United Nations—a goal long pursued by Palestinians but opposed by Israel.

Deputy Ambassador Robert Wood stated unequivocally on Thursday that the Biden administration was against the assembly resolution. The United States, along with Israel, was among the nine countries that voted against it.

“We’ve been very clear from the beginning there is a process for obtaining full membership in the United Nations, and this effort by some of the Arab countries and the Palestinians is to try to go around that,” Wood said Thursday.

“We have said from the beginning the best way to ensure Palestinian full membership in the U.N. is to do that through negotiations with Israel. That remains our position,” he added.&nbsp;

<h2>What does the resolution state?</h2>

The resolution now states that Palestine meets the qualifications for membership without the previous requirement of being deemed "a peace-loving state" by the General Assembly. It suggests that the Security Council should reconsider Palestine's request for membership in a positive light.

The renewed effort for full Palestinian UN&nbsp;membership coincides with the escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, particularly highlighted by the recent hostilities in Gaza. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza, along with the reported death toll of over 34,000 people by Gaza health officials, has sparked widespread condemnation in various council and assembly gatherings.

UN General Assembly votes for granting Palestine new rights, member status

In a dramatic display of outrage, Israeli Ambassador Gilad Erdan shredded a copy of the UN Charter during the&nbsp;United Nations General Assembly session in New York on Friday (May 10). This happened as a resolution supporting full UN membership for Palestine was overwhelmingly passed during the session.

<h2>Resolution for Palestine's membership</h2>

The UNGA in an overwhelming vote passed a resolution asking the Security Council to make Palestine, which has UN observer status, a full member. The resolution, which was proposed by the United Arab Emirates, received the backing of 143 nations, including India.

While 25 countries abstained, nine, including the United States and Israel, opposed it.

This vote grants Palestine, currently an observer state, a stronger push towards full membership, a status that must ultimately be approved by the Security Council.

<h2>A 'clear violation'</h2>

Ambassador Erdan vehemently criticised the resolution, branding it a "clear violation" of the UN Charter and accusing the General Assembly of bypassing a US veto that was cast in the Security Council the previous month.&nbsp;

"This day will go down in infamy," Erdan declared during his impassioned speech. "I want the entire world to remember this moment, this immoral act...today I want to hold up a mirror for you, so you can see what exactly you are inflicting upon the UN Charter with this destructive vote. You are shredding the UN Charter with your own hands," he told the assembly members as he held up a miniature shredder and shredded a copy of the UN charter.

Xavier University of Louisiana and the University of Vermont have made the move in a bid to show support for Palestinians.

Even if the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza&nbsp;was to end today, it would take until 2040 to rebuild all the homes that have been destroyed so far, said the United Nations in a report, on Thursday (May 2).&nbsp;

<h2>Around 16 years to rebuild&nbsp;homes in Gaza: UN</h2>

With nearly seven months of Israel’s bombardment and ground offensives in Gaza, images and videos show most of the Palestinian enclave turned to rubble. The&nbsp;rebuilding of Gaza would also cost around $30 billion to $40 billion and require an effort on a scale the world has not seen since World War II, said a UN official.&nbsp;

The report by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) details the damage to Gaza’s infrastructure and the socio-economic impact since the beginning of the war triggered by Hamas’ October 7 attack on southern Israel.&nbsp;

It also estimates the impact of the war at six months, with estimates of what would happen if the war were to continue. “Every additional day that this war continues is exacting huge and compounding costs to Gazans and all Palestinians,” said UNDP administrator Achim Steiner.

According to the report at least 370,000 housing units in Gaza have been damaged, including 79,000 destroyed completely. The rate of housing after the previous Israel-Hamas conflicts was 992 units per year.&nbsp;

The report noted that even if Israel allows a five-fold increase of construction material to enter the blockaded Palestinian enclave, it would take until 2040 to rebuild destroyed houses, without fixing the damaged ones.

<h2>Cost of rebuilding and impact on economy</h2>

The UNDP estimates the cost of reconstruction of Gaza to surpass $30 billion and could reach up to $40 billion, said UN Assistant Secretary-General Abdallah al-Dardari, as per AFP.&nbsp;

“The scale of the destruction is huge and unprecedented...this is a mission that the global community has not dealt with since World War II,” he added.&nbsp;

According to the UNDP report, the Israeli offensive has virtually shut down the economy in Gaza which around 81 per cent in the last quarter of 2023. The “productive basis of the economy has been destroyed,” with sectors experiencing losses of more than 90 per cent, the report noted.&nbsp;

If the war were to continue for nine months, according to the UNDP projections, the poverty is estimated to more than double with over&nbsp;1.86 million being pushed into poverty.

In 2024, the Palestinian economy – which includes both Gaza and the West Bank – contracted nearly 26 per cent and if the war continues until July, that number would reach 29 per cent with the estimated losses of $7.6 billion, according to the report.&nbsp;

Amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Palestine submitted its request for reconsideration of its 2011 application. The Security Council had previously considered the request but failed to reach a consensus.

The Security Council's Committee on the Admission of Member States discussed the matter earlier this month on 8 and 11 April.&nbsp;However, when the draft resolution was taken up US ultimately vetoed it. Palestine has been a Permanent Observer at the UN since 2012.

Israel to summon envoys of nations that voted in favour of Palestine’s full UN membership

US officials announced on Friday (April 19) that the UN World Food Program (WFP) has agreed to participate in delivering humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza.&nbsp;

This involvement could be a breakthrough, as it addresses a key hurdle, the hesitation of many aid groups to distribute supplies directly in Gaza without significant changes from Israel.

After an Israeli military attack on April 1&nbsp;killed seven aid workers from the World Central Kitchen, the Netanyahu government&nbsp;received a lot of international flak&nbsp;for failing to provide security to humanitarian workers or allow adequate amounts of aid across its land borders.

Israel promised to open more border crossings into Gaza and increase the flow of aid after its drone strikes killed the seven aid workers, who were delivering food into the Palestinian territory.

The US military will build a modular bridge as part of the maritime route, in hopes that handling the inspection and processing of the aid offshore will speed the distribution to people in Gaza.

Offshore, the Army plans to construct a large floating platform for ships to unload pallets of aid. The aid will then be transported by Army boats to a motorised chain of steel pier or causeway sections, which will be securely anchored to the shore.

Germany denied accusations on Tuesday that it was aiding genocide in Gaza by selling Israel arms in a suit to the top U.N. court by Nicaragua reflecting mounting legal action in support of Palestinians.

Germany has been one of Israel's staunchest allies since the Oct. 7 attacks by Hamas militants and retaliatory offensive. It is one of its biggest military suppliers, sending 326.5 million euros ($353.70 million) in equipment and weapons in 2023, according to Economy Ministry data.

Germany and other Western nations have faced street protests, various legal cases, and accusations of hypocrisy from campaign groups who say Israel has killed too many Palestinian civilians in its six-month assault.

But Tania von Uslar-Gleichen, legal adviser for the German Foreign Ministry, told the International Court of Justice, or World Court, that Nicaragua's case was rushed, based on flimsy evidence and should be thrown out for lack of jurisdiction.

Arms exports were scrutinised for adherence to international law, she said.

"Germany is doing its utmost to live up to its responsibility vis-a-vis both the Israeli and the Palestinian people," she added, with Germany the largest individual donor of humanitarian aid to Palestinians.

Von Uslar-Gleichen said Israel's security was a priority for Germany given the history of the Nazi decimation of Jews. "Germany has learned from its past, a past that includes the responsibility for one of the most horrific crimes in human history, the Shoah," she said, using the Hebrew word.

A lawyer for Germany, Christian Tams, told the court that since Oct. 7, 98% of arms exports to Israel were general equipment like vests, helmets and binoculars. And of four cases where war weapons exports were approved, he said, three concerned arms unsuitable for use in combat and meant for training.

NICARAGUA AND SOUTH AFRICA PRESSURE ISRAEL

Lawyers for Nicaragua have asked the ICJ to order Germany to halt arms sales to Israel and resume funding of U.N. Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA.

They argued Berlin has violated the 1948 Genocide Convention and international law by supplying Israel while aware there was a risk of genocide.

After Tuesday's hearing, Nicaraguan ambassador Carlos Arguello told journalists that the case at this preliminary stage did not hinge on the amount of Germany's military aid but simply its existence.

The Islamist group's Oct. 7 attacks killed 1,200 people, according to Israeli tallies. More than 33,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's Gaza offensive since then, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run enclave.

An ICJ ruling on Nicaragua's requested emergency measures is expected in weeks. A final judgement on the merits of the case usually takes years and the court has no power to enforce it.

The United Nations Security Council has approved a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Israel's longtime ally US abstained from voting. Experts say that this highlights the all-time low ties between the two, Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Watch to know more!

Israel war: UN Security council votes to demand immediate ceasefire in Gaza

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC), on Monday (Mar 25)&nbsp;passed a resolution calling for an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza amid the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group&nbsp;Hamas during the&nbsp;month of Ramadan and an&nbsp;unconditional release of all hostages held in the besieged enclave.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

<h2>What happened at the UNSC?</h2>

The UNSC adopted the resolution with&nbsp;14 council members voting in favour of the measure and the United States abstained. &nbsp;

The text demanded&nbsp;an “immediate ceasefire” for the ongoing Muslim holy month of Ramadan, “leading to a permanent sustainable ceasefire.”

The resolution passed also "emphasises the urgent need to expand the flow of humanitarian assistance to and reinforce the protection of civilians in the entire Gaza Strip and reiterates its demand for the lifting of all barriers to the provision of humanitarian assistance at scale."

On Friday (Mar 22),&nbsp;the UNSC had turned down the resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and a hostage deal after Russia and China vetoed the US-led draft. Out of the 15 council members, 11 voted in favour of the resolution, but the vetoes stopped its passage.

The measure passed&nbsp;on Monday is&nbsp;an alternative resolution drafted by the 10 elected members of the UNSC.&nbsp;Notably, the resolution on Friday was the first time that the US backed a draft that came up for a vote with the word “ceasefire” in it since the beginning of the war.

<h2>UN chief calls for implementation</h2>

The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres after the vote called for the implementation of the resolution and said "failure&nbsp;would be unforgivable."

"The Security Council just approved a long-awaited resolution on Gaza, demanding an immediate ceasefire, and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages," said the UN chief in a post on X.&nbsp;

Earlier on Monday, Guterres&nbsp;said that there is growing international consensus to tell Israel that a ceasefire is necessary and that any ground invasion of Rafah in southern Gaza would lead to a humanitarian disaster.&nbsp;&nbsp;

During his visit, Guterres also visited the Wihdat camp in Jordan where the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) provides health and education services.&nbsp;

“We must strive to keep the one-of-a-kind services that UNRWA provides flowing because that keeps hope flowing. In a darkening world, UNRWA is the one ray of light for millions of people,” said the UN chief. Jordan is home to around 2.4 million Palestinian refugees.

The funding for UNRWA hangs in balance after Israel accused a dozen of the agency’s staff members of being a part of the October 7 Hamas attack against Israel. This has led a number of countries including some of its biggest donors to pause the funding.&nbsp;

UNSC passes resolution demanding ‘immediate ceasefire’ in Gaza during Ramadan; US abstains from voting

The United Nations Security Council's recent session witnessed the rejection of a resolution spearheaded by the United States, advocating for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The&nbsp;resolution, proposed amid&nbsp;escalating tensions in the region, aimed to secure a six-week ceasefire to facilitate humanitarian aid delivery and ensure the protection of civilians caught in the conflict. However, the measure faced significant opposition from two permanent members of the Security Council: Russia and China, who exercised their veto power to block its passage.

The US-led resolution backed support from 11 out of the 15 Security Council members, showing&nbsp;a broad consensus among the international community regarding the urgency of ending the violence in Gaza.

The United Nations Security Council's recent session witnessed the rejection of a resolution spearheaded by the United States, advocating for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The resolution, proposed amid escalating tensions in the region, aimed to secure a six-week ceasefire to facilitate humanitarian aid delivery and ensure the protection of civilians caught in the conflict. However, the measure faced significant opposition from two permanent members of the Security Council: Russia and China, who exercised their veto power to block its passage. The US-led resolution backed support from 11 out of the 15 Security Council members, showing a broad consensus among the international community regarding the urgency of ending the violence in Gaza. Despite this overwhelming support, the resolution was thwarted by the vetoes of Russia and China, leading to a deadlock in the Security Council's efforts to address the crisis.
