The number of children killed in armed conflicts across the world tripled last year when compared to the year prior, said the United Nations, on Tuesday (Jun 18). The international organisation also said that it faced a $40.8-billion funding shortfall across the globe.

Death toll in armed conflicts rises

The UN rights chief Volker Turk, on Tuesday, revealed the disturbing number of civilians being killed in armed conflicts across the world to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Overall, the number of civilian deaths in armed conflict soared by 72 per cent in 2023, said the UN rights chief citing the data gathered by his office.

Turk noted how killing and injuring of civilians as well as the destruction of vital infrastructure have become a “daily occurrence”.

“Children shot at. Hospitals bombed. Heavy artillery launched on entire communities. All along with hateful, divisive, and dehumanising rhetoric,” said the UN rights chief.

The data, collected by the OHCHR, “horrifyingly” also indicates “that the proportion of women killed in 2023 doubled and that of children tripled, compared to the year prior,” Turk said.

‘Unconscionable death and suffering’

Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem are suffering a drastically worsening human rights environment, alongside “unconscionable death and suffering” in Gaza, the UN rights chief said.

Turk also said he was “appalled by the disregard for international human rights and humanitarian law by parties to the conflict” amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

According to the UN data, over 120,000 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, have been killed or injured because of Israel’s military operation in the Palestinian enclave.

The war in Gaza has also drawn focus away from the West Bank, where the Israeli army conducts nearly nightly, often deadly, raids.

Since the beginning of the war in Gaza, in October through mid-June, 528 Palestinians, including 133 children, had been killed by Israeli forces or settlers in the West Bank, said Turk.

Meanwhile, 23 Israelis have been killed in the West Bank and Israel in clashes with or attacks by Palestinians, said the UN rights chief.

Turk went on to talk about the Ukraine war and ongoing conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan and Syria.

The recent wave of Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure has destroyed 68 per cent of the war-torn country’s electricity production capacity, “bringing the system to a dangerous tipping point, especially ahead of winter,” said the UN rights chief.

Lack of funds

According to Turk, as of the end of May this year the gap between the humanitarian funding requirements and available resources stood at $40.8 billion, which left appeals funded just 16.1 per cent on average.

On the other hand, the global military expenditure in 2023 was $2.5 trillion, which he said was “the steepest year-on-year increase since 2009”.

“In addition to inflicting unbearable human suffering, war comes with a hefty price tag,” the UN rights chief noted.

The world is losing four football fields worth of healthy land every second, warned the United Nations chief in a strong message ahead of the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought which will be marked on Monday (Jun 17).

‘We are vandalising the Earth’

“The security, prosperity, and health of billions of people rely on thriving lands supporting lives, livelihoods, and ecosystems, but we’re vandalising the Earth that sustains us,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in a statement published on Sunday (Jun 16).

According to the UN, nearly 40 per cent of land across the planet is degraded and we are losing more hectares every second. “Every second, around four football fields of healthy land are degraded,” Guterres added.

This year’s theme is ‘United for Land. Our Legacy. Our Future’. The global observance of the day will be hosted by the Government of Germany in Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn.

The event will also mark the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), a legally binding international agreement, adopted in 1994, linking environment and development to sustainable land management.

The agreement has sought to address issues faced particularly by those who live in arid, semi-arid, and dry sub-humid areas, also known as drylands.

Israel has committed crimes against humanity, including "extermination," during the war in Gaza, reveals a UN investigation that concluded on Wednesday (June 12).

The investigation also stated that both Israeli and Palestinian armed groups have committed war crimes.

It found that Israel had committed war crimes, crimes against humanity and violations of international humanitarian law (IHL) and international human rights law (IHRL).

The report said "an extensive or systematic attack directed against the civilian population in Gaza."

"The commission found that the crimes against humanity of extermination; murder; gender persecution targeting Palestinian men and boys; forcible transfer; and torture and inhuman and cruel treatment were committed," the report added.

However, Israel rejected the conclusions by accusing the UN commission of "systematic anti-Israeli discrimination".

It may be noted here that the Gaza war broke out after Hamas' unprecedented October 7 attack resulted in the deaths of 1,194 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures.

The commission further found that in that attack, members of the military wings of Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups and Palestinian civilians committed war crimes, as well as violations and abuses of IHL and IHRL.

The militants seized 251 hostages, of which 116 remain in Gaza, though the Israeli army says 41 of them are dead.

The Earth is sweltering under extraordinary heat and it has been doing so for the 12th straight month now. The revelation has prompted un secretary-general Antonio Guterres to call for urgent action to avert a climate hell.

Guterres: Must avert 'climate hell'

The UN Secretary-General delivered a hard-hitting at the American Museum of Natural History on June 5, World Environment Day. He discussed the status of the climate, the risks that world leaders are taking, and what industries and nations, especially the G7 and G20, must do in the upcoming 18 months to preserve humanity's prospects of a habitable future.

According to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, humanity's contribution to the planet's catastrophic warming is comparable to the meteorite that killed out the dinosaurs. "Like the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs, we're having an outsized impact," Guterres said. "In the case of climate, we are not the dinosaurs. We are the meteor. We are not only in danger. We are the danger." According to a report from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), there is an 80 per cent chance that the annual average global temperature will briefly exceed 1.5°C over pre-industrial levels for at least one of the next five years. By early 2025, signatory nations to the Paris Agreement will need to submit revised objectives for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. “We are playing Russian roulette with our planet,” said Mr Guterres. “We need an exit ramp off the highway to climate hell. And the good news is that we have control of the wheel. The battle to limit temperature rise to 1.5 degrees will be won or lost in the 2020s – under the watch of leaders today.” Also read: Rare crystals reveal when Earth first had fresh water, hinting at origin of life Guterres also slammed the fossil fuel sector, calling it the "Godfathers of Climate Chaos." He also chastised advertisers for acting as "enablers" in allowing fossil fuel firms to postpone climate action. "Stop taking on new fossil fuel clients, from today, and set out plans to drop your existing ones," he warned "Mad Men fuelling the madness." He also asked all countries to prohibit advertising from fossil fuel companies, as they have done for "products that harm human health like tobacco." The UN chief reiterated the need for "solidarity levies" on the shipping and aviation industries in addition to calling for a tax on the profits of fossil fuel firms to fund the battle against global warming. Guterres also asked that wealthy nations phase out coal by 2030 and cut oil and gas usage by 60 per cent by 2035. He urged wealthier countries, who have historically been more responsible for carbon emissions, to increase climate help to poorer, more vulnerable countries. (With inputs from agencies)

The UN World Food Program (WFP) said on Tuesday (May 21) the newly built $320 million pier project for delivering aid to Gaza may fail unless Israel starts ensuring the conditions the humanitarian groups need to operate safely.

The operation was paused for at least two days after crowds looted aid trucks arriving from the port, resulting in the death of one Palestinian man.

Deliveries were stopped on Sunday and Monday (May 19-20) after the majority of the trucks in an aid convoy were stripped of all their goods on the way to a warehouse in Gaza, the WFP said.

The Pentagon announced that aid movement from the secured port area resumed on Tuesday (May 21), but the UN reported that it was unaware of any deliveries that day.

Only five of the 16 aid trucks that left the secured area on Saturday (May 18) arrived at the warehouse with their cargo intact, WFP spokesperson Steve Taravella told The Associated Press news agency.

“Without sufficient supplies entering Gaza, these issues will continue to surface,” Taravella said in an email.

“We have raised this issue with the relevant parties and reiterate our request for alternative roads to facilitate aid delivery. Unless we receive the necessary clearance and coordination to use additional routes, this operation may not be successful.”

The WFP also said on Tuesday (May 21) it has suspended food distribution in the southern Gaza city of Rafah due to a lack of supplies and insecurity.

President Joe Biden had ordered the US military to build the floating pier for deliveries of food and other vital supplies.

Israeli restrictions on shipments through land borders and ongoing fighting have caused a severe food crisis for all 2.3 million residents of Gaza since the Israel-Hamas war began in October.

US and UN officials reported that famine has gripped northern Gaza.

According to a UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, the aid convoys do not travel with armed security. He said security comes from engagement with various community groups and humanitarian partners.

The Pentagon press secretary, Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, said as of Tuesday 569 metric tonnes of aid has been delivered to the secured area at the Gaza port. Some aid remains at the port because distribution agencies are seeking alternative routes to transport it to warehouses in Gaza.

When asked if any aid from the pier had yet reached Gaza residents in need, Ryder said, “I do not believe so.”
