However, Ukraine’s defence minister Oleksiy Reznikov believes that it is “possible” that the war with Russia will be over by the end of 2022. During his address at an international security forum, Reznikov said that it is possible that the war can get over in less than a year considering the amount of support Ukraine receives from the rest of the world. He also sounded a dire warning for other countries if Russia is not stopped.</p>

<p>"Russia continues to make efforts to occupy our entire state. It is currently impossible to predict when the war will end, but my optimistic predictions are that it will be possible to do it this year," he said in his address according to a report on Sky News.</p>

<p>"Next will be Poland, the Baltic countries, Slovakia, and others. That is why we must stop Russia and restrain (them) in the future," he added while speaking about the dangers of the ongoing war.</p>

<p>The southeastern areas of Donetsk and Luhansk continue to the focus of the Russian military as Ukraine announced that they have successfully recaptured some parts of Severodonetsk.</p>

<p>Serhiy Haidai, governor of Luhansk province, said on Saturday that 30 per cent of the city was already under Ukraine’s control and thanks to the latest counter-attack against the Russian forces, they have now recaptured another 20 per cent.</p>

<p>Ukraine jacked up its main interest rate to a seven-year-high of 25% from 10% on Thursday, tightening policy for the first time since the Russian invasion to tackle double-digit inflation and protect the hryvnia as some business activity returns.</p>

<p>The Feb. 24 invasion has devastated the economy, which could shrink by at least a third this year as the war has forced 40% of businesses to close, destroyed infrastructure, blocked shipping routes and reduced whole towns to rubble.</p>

<p>Speaking at a briefing, Central Bank Governor Kyrylo Shevchenko called for talks with the International Monetary Fund on a new aid programme.</p>

<p>The rate increase was criticised by an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's office, who said the rate was too high and dangerous to the economy during wartime. It was not clear whether he was speaking in a personal capacity.</p>

<p>The prime minister's office and the finance ministry declined immediate comment.</p>

<p>The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) had frozen its main rate 10% at the start of the invasion, but last week it signalled it could resume regular monetary policy reviews as business activity partially recovered in safer parts of the country.</p>

<p>It is betting that a sharp rate hike will also nudge the government to raise the yield on domestic bonds, making hryvnia assets more attractive and preventing household incomes and savings from being eroded by inflation.</p>

<p>The central bank has fixed the hryvnia exchange rate, which has forced it to sell billions of dollars in forex reserves since the start of the invasion. It aims to let the currency float freely eventually once conditions allow.</p>

<p>"The NBU expects that a significant rise in the key policy rate, to 25%, will be sufficient to ease pressures on the FX market and stabilize inflation expectations, which in the future will lay the foundations for a monetary policy easing cycle," it said.</p>

<p>"If yields on hryvnia assets do not rise sufficiently, international reserves will keep depleting rapidly and imbalances will build up in the economy," it said.</p>

<p>Inflation was already in double digits before the conflict began and climbed further to around 17% in May from 16.4% in April, according to NBU estimates.</p>

<p>The central bank said inflation could double in 2022 from 10% in 2021, pushed up by rising global prices and the damage of the war on domestic production and supply chains.</p>

<p>"A decisive rise in the key policy rate will spur investors’ interest in hryvnia assets, while also easing pressures on international reserves and reining in inflation," the NBU said.</p>

<p>The number of small businesses that had suspended operations in April fell to 26% from 73% in March, according to a survey by the European Business Association, the union of businesses operating in Ukraine.</p>

<p>Thursday's move takes the main interest rate to its highest level since 2015, when Ukraine's economy was reeling from Russia's annexation of Crimea and the outbreak of war between Ukrainian troops and Russian-backed forces in eastern Ukraine.</p>

<p>Russia's advance has been slowed by a fierce Ukrainian resistance which repelled them from around the capital and forced Moscow to shift its aims towards capturing the east.</p>

<p>In spite of Russia's slow advance, Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Pescov said, "certain results have been achieved". He pointed at "liberation" &nbsp;of some areas from what he called the "pro-Nazi armed forces of Ukraine".</p>

<p>Western countries including the US have continued sending potent weapons to Ukraine. They have also imposed stringent sanctions on Russia. The European Union on Friday, formally adopted a ban on most Russian oil imports.</p>

<p>Amid the unfolding situation, the United Nations has said that it is leading intense negotiations with Russia to allow Ukranian grain to leave country's ports in order to avoid food crisis.</p>

<p>The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine entered its 100th day on Thursday and there seems to be no solution in sight right now. The Russian forces have been attacking Ukrainian cities on multiple fronts but an impressive resistance from the local army and citizens have seen the aggressors face massive setbacks during the invasion. However, Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that the Russian military forces currently control around 20 per cent of Ukraine’s territory but added that “Ukrainian defence forces have liberated 1,017 localities till now”.</p>

<p>“Russian troops invaded 3,620 populated localities of Ukraine. 1,017 of them have already been liberated, another 2,603 need to be liberated. As of today, about 20 per cent of our territory is controlled by the occupiers, almost 125,000 square km. It is much more than the area of all Benelux countries combined,” Zelensky said in his address to politicians and the people of Luxembourg according to AFP.</p>

<p>During the address, Zelensky also said that the invasion started eight years ago when Russia started attacking parts of Ukraine and between 2014 and 2022, they ended up controlling around 43,000 square km of Ukraine’s territory.</p>

<p>The captured Ukrainian areas included Crimea and a major chunk of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.</p>
