The UK government on Thursday said it was "deeply concerned" after Russian news agencies reported pro-Moscow separatists had sentenced to death two British fighters captured by Russian troops while fighting for Ukraine.

"We're obviously deeply concerned by this. We've said continually that prisoners of war shouldn't be exploited for political purposes," said a spokesman for Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

"Under the Geneva Convention, prisoners of war are entitled to combatant immunity, and they should not be prosecuted for participation in hostilities. So we will continue to work with Ukrainian authorities to try and secure the release of any British national who was serving in the Ukrainian Armed Forces and who are being held as prisoners of war," He added.

Two Britons and a Moroccan were sentenced to death by a court in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), one of Russia's proxies in eastern Ukraine.

The court found the three men - Britons Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner and Moroccan Brahim Saadoun - guilty of "mercenary activities and committing actions aimed at seizing power and overthrowing the constitutional order of the DPR."&nbsp;

The three men were captured while fighting for Ukraine against Russia and Russian-backed forces that entered the country on Feb. 24. In court, they admitted they were mercenaries. Their lawyer said they will appeal the decision.

British Foreign Secretary Luz Truss tweeted: “I utterly condemn the sentencing of Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner held by Russian proxies in eastern Ukraine. They are prisoners of war. This is a sham judgment with absolutely no legitimacy.”

British citizens Aslin and Pinner were captured by the Russian-backed forces in Mariupol in April, during a bitter fight for control of the city. Moroccan Saadoun surrendered in March while fighting in a small town between Mariupol and the regional capital of Donetsk.

The United States last week announced it would give Kyiv its high mobility artillery rocket system, known as HIMARS, which can simultaneously launch multiple precision-guided missiles &amp; is superior in range &amp; precision to existing systems Ukraine has. It is the latest in a long list of weaponry sent or pledged to the pro-Western country. The U.S. move prompted Russian President Vladimir Putin to warn on Sunday that Moscow will strike new unspecified "targets" if the West supplies the missiles to Ukraine &amp; said new arms deliveries to Kyiv were aimed at "prolonging the conflict"

Boris Volkhonsky, Associate Professor, Institute of Asian and African Studies, Lomonosov Moscow State University told Wion, ‘If the West persists in its strategy of fighting Russia up to the last Ukrainian &amp; goes on supplying heavy armaments to what is left of Ukraine, this may mean a much longer process &amp; much greater number of casualties – both military and civilian. The sooner the West realises the futility of such attempts, the better.’

With the conflict raging on countries like <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/germany-votes-overwhelmingly-in-favour-of-supplying-heavy-weapons-to-ukraine-amid-ongoing-conflict-474643">Germany</a> which were reluctant initially, have now pledged arms &amp; ammunition to Ukraine. In the latest, the UK Ministry of Defence said it has coordinated closely with Washington over its gift of the multiple-launch rocket systems, known <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/after-us-now-britain-to-send-multiple-launch-rocket-systems-to-ukraine-485401">as MLRS, to help Ukraine</a> defend itself against Russian aggression. The M270 launchers, which can strike targets up to 80 kilometres away with precision-guided rockets, will "offer a significant boost in capability for the Ukrainian forces," the ministry added. London has so far offered more than $937 million in military support to Ukraine. This includes air defence systems, thousands of anti-tank missiles &amp; various types of munitions, hundreds of armoured vehicles &amp; other equipment.

The NATO allies continue to stress that these weapons are defensive in nature and won’t be used to strike inside the Russian territory. But Moscow isn’t convinced. Over the last four months, as the battle intensifies, the U.S. &amp; its European allies have pumped in more advanced &amp; deadlier weapons to Kyiv. Russian forces meanwhile have claimed to have <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/russia-claims-destruction-of-large-batch-of-western-supplied-weapons-in-missile-strike-in-ukraine-474303">destroyed multiple batches of western weapons</a> meant for Ukrainian forces.

So how is this conflict going to end? Well, Ruslan Bortnik told Wion, 'The war in Ukraine will end only when one of the participants in the war wins or all sides of the war are convinced of the impossibility of victory. At the same time, one must understand that the Ukrainian-Russian war is only part of the global confrontation between the United States &amp; its allies and Russia and its allies for the right &amp; rules to determine the new world order. This is how this war is perceived by all global states.'

Moscow's military campaign in Ukraine along with the crippling sanctions on Russia has disrupted supplies of fertiliser, wheat &amp; other commodities from both countries, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/russia-ukraine-war-could-cause-mass-hunger-and-famine-due-to-food-insecurity-un-warns-480297">pushing up prices for food</a> &amp; fuel, especially in developing nations. Ships loaded with grain remain blocked in Ukraine, which before February was a leading exporter of corn &amp; wheat &amp; alone accounted for 50% of world trade in sunflower seeds &amp; oil. &nbsp;Putin has said Moscow is ready to look for ways to ship grain blocked in Ukrainian ports but has demanded the West lift sanctions.

Clearly, as the war rages on in Ukraine, it also compounds the problems around the world. The global economy was slowly coming out of the pandemic induced slowdown but the biggest military conflict in Europe in decades has added to the economic woes. This is continuously pushing up food &amp; fuel prices around the globe.

Who is winning the Ukraine war?

Ukraine on Wednesday left behind disappointment of not qualifying for World Cup as they kickstarted their UEFA Nations League with a victory against Republic of Ireland. Ukraine won 1-0.

Ukraine was beaten by Wales in the World Cup qualifying playoff final on Sunday, but they proved to be the better team against Ireland. A set-piece goal from midfielder Viktor Tsygankov sealed the three points for the war-torn nation.

Ukraine nearly took the lead from a counter-attack late in the first half when Taras Kacharaba found the back of the net with a stunning half-volley from outside the box but the effort was ruled out for offside in the build-up.

Tsygankov came on as a halftime substitute and made an instant impact when his curling free kick missed everyone, bounced in front of the keeper and ended up in the corner of the net.

The defeat has left Ireland at the bottom of the group. In their first game, they suffered defeat at the hands of Armenia.

The Irish FA had handed out 3,500 tickets to Ukrainian refugees for this match held in Dublin. There were other pockets of blue and yellow around the Aviva Stadium.

"This is a very difficult time. The Ukrainians who came to see us play in Ireland were accepted by the incredible Irish hospitality and people," Petrakov said.

"You took our women and children who were basically risking their lives back in Ukraine. I want to thank the whole island," he said referring to Ukrainian refugees in Ireland.

"Those Ukrainians in the stand just wanted to see some positivity from the team but they are really longing to go home to Ukraine.&nbsp;

"We made them a little bit happier tonight. That is the major achievement in my view."

Russian forces largely control the key eastern Ukrainian city of Severodonetsk, said the region's governor on Wednesday. Severodonetsk is a key city in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region. Russia has concentrated its firepower on the Donbas region after being repelled from other regions of Ukraine.

Moscow's forces "control a large part of Severodonetsk. The industrial zone is still ours, there are no Russians there", Sergiy Gaiday, governor of the Lugansk region which includes the city, said on Telegram.

"The fighting is only going on in the streets inside the city," he added.

Earlier in the day, Gaiday said that Russia was shelling Severodonetsk "24 hours a day" and that Ukraine's forces might have to pull back. Russia has already claimed on Tuesday that it had full control of residential areas.

Donbas region includes Donetsk and Luhansk and the cities of Severodonetsk and Lysychansk, which are separated by a river, were the last areas still under Ukrainian control.

Gaiday said that though Lysychansk remained fully under Ukrainian control it is under "powerful and chaotic" shelling. He accused Russian forces of purposely targetting hospitals and humanitarian aid distribution centres.

"The destruction is enormous," he added.

The United Nation's secretary-general said Wednesday that 1.6 billion people were likely to be affected as the consequences of Russia's invasion of Ukraine worsened.

Ukraine looks to buy Iron Dome rocket interception system from Israel to fight off Russia

Former German chancellor Angela&nbsp;Merkel&nbsp;on Tuesday defended her years-long policy of detente towards Moscow, saying she had "nothing to apologise for" even as the Ukraine war casts a pall on her legacy.

In her first major interview since stepping down six months ago,&nbsp;Merkel&nbsp;insisted she had not been naive in her dealings with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"Diplomacy isn't wrong just because it hasn't worked," the 67-year-old said on stage in a Berlin theatre, in an interview broadcast on the Phoenix news channel.

She recalled her support for economic sanctions against Russia over its 2014 annexation of Crimea, and the German-French efforts to keep the Minsk peace process for Ukraine alive.&nbsp;

"I don't have to blame myself for not trying hard enough," the conservative ex-chancellor said.

"I don't see that I&nbsp;have to say 'that was wrong' and that's why I have nothing to apologise for."

The veteran leader, who frequently met with Putin during her 16 years in power and championed a commerce-driven, pragmatic approach towards Moscow, said the February 24 invasion of Ukraine had marked a "turning point".

'Wants to destroy Europe'

There was "no justification whatsoever" for the "brutal" and illegal war of aggression, she said, adding that Putin had made "a big mistake".

"He wants to destroy Europe," she warned. "It's very important for the European Union to stick together now."

But she batted away criticism that she had been wrong to block Ukraine from joining NATO in 2008, saying it was not ready then and she wanted to avoid "further escalation" with Putin, who was already seething about the military alliance's perceived eastward expansion.

She also insisted that the 2014-2015 Minsk peace pacts, which now lie in tatters, were at the time seen as the best bet to end the fighting in eastern Ukraine between pro-Russian separatists and Ukrainian soldiers.

The peace process "brought some calm" that gave Ukraine an extra seven years to develop as a democracy and strengthen its military, she said, in a nod to Kyiv's much praised resistance against the invading Russian troops.

"The courage and passion with which they are fighting for their country is very impressive," Merkel said, adding she had "the highest respect" for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

But Merkel insisted there was no way to avoid dealing with Putin because Russia, like China, was too big to ignore.

"We have to find a way to co-exist despite all our differences," she said.

'Language of strength'&nbsp;

Confronted with criticism of the "change through trade" policy pushed by successive German governments, Merkel said she was never under the illusion that closer trade links would spur democratic reforms in Russia.

"I never thought Putin would change through trade," she said. But in the absence of a political rapprochement, "having some economic ties makes sense".

Germany became hugely reliant on Russian energy imports on Merkel's watch, and she long irked Western allies with her backing for the controversial Nord Stream 2 pipeline that was to double Russian gas deliveries to Germany.

The project was shelved by current Chancellor Olaf Scholz in late February over Russia's aggression, and Europe's top economy is now joining EU partners in a race to wean itself off Russian oil, gas and coal.

In another major reversal, Scholz has pledged to invest 100 billion euros ($107 billion) in modernising Germany's military, seen as chronically underfunded during the Merkel era.

Scholz, a Social Democrat who served as finance minister in Merkel's last coalition government, has also vowed to spend more than two percent of annual gross domestic product on defence, surpassing NATO's target.

Merkel voiced support for her successor's decisions, saying strength was "the only language Putin understands".

"Personally, I'm doing well," she told the audience, even if she felt sombre about the war in Ukraine, "like so many people".&nbsp;

Microsoft cuts Russia operations due to Ukraine invasion

The OECD warned Wednesday that the world economy will pay a "hefty price" for Russia's invasion of Ukraine as it slashed its 2022 growth forecast and projected higher inflation.

The Paris-based organisation, which represents 38 mostly developed countries, is the latest institution to predict lower GDP growth due to the conflict, which has sent food and energy prices soaring.

In its latest economic outlook, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development said global gross domestic product would grow by three percent in 2022, down sharply from the 4.5 percent estimated in December.

The OECD also doubled its forecast for inflation among its members -- which range from the United States to Australia, Japan, and Latin American and European nations -- to 8.5 percent, its highest level since 1988.&nbsp;

"The world is set to pay a hefty price for Russia's war against Ukraine," wrote the OECD's chief economist and deputy secretary-general, Laurence Boone, adding that a "humanitarian crisis is unfolding before our eyes".

"The extent to which growth will be lower and inflation higher will depend on how the war evolves, but it is clear the poorest will be hit hardest," Boone said.

"The price of this war is high and will need to be shared."

Before the war broke out, the outlook had appeared "broadly favourable" for 2022-23, with growth and inflation expected to return to normal after the devastating Covid-19 pandemic, said the OECD.

However, "the invasion of Ukraine, along with shutdowns in major cities and ports in China due to the zero-Covid policy, has generated a new set of adverse shocks," it said.

Food shortage risk

The OECD was supposed to publish its outlook in March, but it delayed its detailed assessment until now due to uncertainty over the war. At the time, it said the conflict could cut global GDP growth by "over one percentage point".

The World Bank revised its own figures on Tuesday, lowering its global growth forecast from 4.1 percent to 2.9 percent. The IMF cut its forecast by nearly one point to 3.6 percent in April.

The OECD cut its growth forecast for the United States from 3.7 percent to 2.5 percent and that of China, the world's second biggest economy, from 5.1 percent to 4.4 percent. The eurozone's GPD is now seen growing by 2.6 percent instead of 4.3 percent while Britain's outlook was lowered to 3.6 percent from 4.7 percent.

The OECD noted that commodity prices had risen, hitting real income and spending, "particularly for the most vulnerable households".

"In many emerging-market economies the risks of food shortages are high given the reliance on agricultural exports from Russia and Ukraine," it said.

The report warned that the "effects of the war in Ukraine may be even greater than assumed", raising as an example a scenario of Russia cutting gas supplies to Europe.

As central banks tighten their monetary policies to counter inflation, the report said sharp increases of interest rates could also hit growth more than anticipated.

Covid risk

The Covid pandemic, meanwhile, could take another turn for the worse.

"New more aggressive or contagious variants may emerge, while the application of zero-Covid policies in large economies like China has the potential to sap global demand and disrupt supply for some time to come," the OECD said.

The Paris-based organisation, which represents 38 mostly developed countries, is the latest institution to predict lower GDP growth due to the conflict, which has sent food and energy prices soaring. In its latest economic outlook, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development said global gross domestic product would grow by three percent in 2022, down sharply from the 4.5 percent estimated in December. Food shortage risk The OECD was supposed to publish its outlook in March, but it delayed its detailed assessment until now due to uncertainty over the war. At the time, it said the conflict could cut global GDP growth by "over one percentage point". The eurozone's GPD is now seen growing by 2.6 percent instead of 4.3 percent while Britain's outlook was lowered to 3.6 percent from 4.7 percent. The OECD noted that commodity prices had risen, hitting real income and spending, "particularly for the most vulnerable households". "In many emerging-market economies the risks of food shortages are high given the reliance on agricultural exports from Russia and Ukraine," it said. The report warned that the "effects of the war in Ukraine may be even greater than assumed", raising as an example a scenario of Russia cutting gas supplies to Europe. As central banks tighten their monetary policies to counter inflation, the report said sharp increases of interest rates could also hit growth more than anticipated. World Bank okays fresh funds for Ukraine

The executive board of the World Bank on Tuesday approved USD 1.49 billion of additional funds for Ukraine to help the country pay wages for government and social workers. These fresh funds have expanded the bank's total pledged support to over $4 billion

The World Bank said in a statement that the latest funding is supported by financing guarantees from Britain, the Netherlands, Lithuania and Latvia. The project is also being supported by parallel financing from Italy and contributions from a new Multi-Donor Trust Fund.

This is Lavrov's second Turkey visit. On March 10, he met Cavusoglu and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.

Negotiations will mainly circle around opening of a security corridor in order to ship grains from Ukraine.

"Both Russia and Ukraine trust us."

The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement it "appreciates Turkey's efforts aimed at unblocking Ukrainian ports" but added that "for the moment there is no agreement on this point between Ukraine, Turkey and Russia."

"Decisions must be taken with the participation of all parties concerned", the ministry said.

This resulted in Nebenzia walking out of the meeting in protest. The ambassador told Reuters that he could stay longer because of “the lies that Charles Michel came here to distribute”.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday (June 6) called reports of Russia stealing Ukrainian grain 'credible. This allegation has already been made by Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky.

"There are credible reports... that Russia is pilfering Ukraine's grain exports to sell for its own profit," Blinken said at a State Department conference on food security issues arising from the invasion of Ukraine.

"Now, Russia is hoarding its food exports as well," Blinken added, outlining the reasons for the sharp surge in global prices for wheat and other grains, and looming shortages.

The New York Times reported Monday that a number of freight vessels have departed Russia-controlled ports with what US officials have described as "stolen Ukrainian grain."

The report said that the United States has alerted 14 countries, mostly in Africa, about the shipments, as many of them are dependent on grain imports and already face severely constrained supplies.&nbsp;

"There is somewhere around 20 million tonnes of wheat that is trapped in silos near Odessa, and in ships literally filled with grain that are stuck in the Odessa port because of this Russian blockade."

Blinken said it was a deliberate strategy by Russian President Vladimir Putin to force the rest of the world "to give in to him," and eliminate sanctions on russia.

"In other words, quite simply put, it's blackmail," Blinken said.

News agency Reuters confirmed the news citing a report published on the Telegram messaging app by state television reporter Alexander Sladkov. According to reports, Major-General Roman Kutuzov was killed. However, there was no immediate comment from the Russian defence ministry or any other official. Major-General Roman Kutuzov was reportedly the chief of staff of the 29th Combined Arms Army. According to a source-based report, Kutuzov's vehicle was ambushed by Ukrainians as he died in a fight in Donbas. Kutuzov is the 11th general, but the first such high ranking army officer in more than a month. In addition, at least 49 colonels have been killed in the war with Ukraine. Russia already classifies military deaths as state secrets even in times of peace and has not updated its official casualty figures in Ukraine since March 25, when it said that 1,351 Russian soldiers had been killed since the start of its military campaign on February 24. Russia says it is carrying out "special military operation" designed to demilitarise Ukraine and rid it of nationalists threatening the Russian-speaking population. Hennessey`s alertness kept Wales in the game a difficult opening half hour when he made three crucial saves and late in the game he produced the best save of all with a one-handed palm to keep out a header from Artem Dovbyk. The former Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton Wanderers keeper, who was making his 102nd appearance for his country, said he had saved his best performance for Wales for the most important match.

This rocket system can strike targets, which are up to 80 km away, media reports said. As Russia's tactics has evolved, the Britain's support for Ukraine is also changing, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said, while talking about the announcement of the proposed shipment of the M270 multiple-launch systems to Ukraine.&nbsp;In a statement, Wallace said, "These highly capable multiple-launch rocket systems will enable our Ukrainian friends to better protect themselves against the brutal use of long-range artillery, which (Russian President Vladimir) Putin's forces have used indiscriminately to flatten cities." &nbsp;

Not just this, Britain will also train Ukrainian troops on how to use the new launchers in the UK, the government further said. &nbsp;

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday (June 5) vowed to strike harder if longer-range missiles were supplied to Ukraine.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Slamming the West for "prolonging the conflict," Putin boasted that Russian anti-aircraft forces have shot down dozens of Ukrainian weapons and are "cracking them like nuts." Putin was quoted as saying in an excerpt of an interview with Rossiya-1 state television channel that if the United States started supplying Ukraine with longer-range missiles, "we will strike at those targets which we have not yet been hitting." &nbsp;

"We understand that this supply (of advance rocket systems) from the United States and some other countries is meant to make up for the losses of this military equipment," Putin said.&nbsp;"This is nothing new. It doesn't change anything in essence," he added. &nbsp;&nbsp;
