Amnesty International has accused Russia of committing war crimes during their shelling over the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. The Russia-Ukraine conflict has already crossed 100 days and Amnesty said on Monday that Russia attacked Kharkiv with scattered mines and cluster munitions resulting in the death of hundreds of civilians. While the use of cluster munitions during any conflict is considered to be a war crime by a number of countries, both Russia and Ukraine have never signed any international agreement which stops them from using the weapons. However, Amnesty International research consultant Jean-Baptiste Gallopin told Reuters that the use of such weapons is not tolerated.

During the investigation conducted by Amnesty International in the aftermath of the Kharkiv raids, they found that around 606 civilians were killed because of the bombing while 600,000 fled. They also confirmed the use of both cluster munitions and scatterable mines during the Russian attack.

"The repeated bombardments of residential neighbourhoods in Kharkiv are indiscriminate attacks which killed and injured hundreds of civilians, and as such constitute war crimes," Amnesty said.

The Amnesty report also held Ukrainian forces responsible for violation of international humanitarian law by positioning artillery near residential buildings. According to the Reuters report, Gallopin said that the presence of the artillery made the buildings an easy target for the Russian bombers but added that this "in no way justifies the relentless indiscriminate shelling of the city.

“The people of Kharkiv have faced a relentless barrage of indiscriminate attacks in recent months, which killed and injured hundreds of civilians,” said Donatella Rovera, Amnesty International’s senior crisis response adviser according to the Reuters report.

“The repeated use of widely banned cluster munitions is shocking, and a further indication of utter disregard for civilian lives. The Russian forces responsible for these horrific attacks must be held accountable for their actions, and victims and their families must receive full reparations,” he added.

Amnesty International accuses Russia of ‘war crimes’ in Ukranian city of Kharkiv

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has been raging on for more than 100 days now, and scores of civilians have lost their lives in the conflict. Armies of both countries have been involved in intense fights since Russian troops entered Ukraine. Now, Russia solidifies its presence in Ukraine and blows up a key bridge.

Russia-Ukraine conflict: Russia solidifies its presence in Ukraine & blows up a key bridge

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has been going on for more 100 days and it has already witnessed untold tragedies and loss of life at an alarming rate. However, the war has also given us some stories of rare heroics. One such story is that of Andriy Pokrasa, 15, and his dad, Stanislav – the duo who are using drones to track the movement of the Russian military. The father-son duo, who lived on the outskirts of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, used a small drone to follow the movement of the Russian tanks and the data was relayed back to the Ukrainian troops. This resulted in a number of successful counter-offensive missions for Ukraine and made them into heroes in the eyes of Ukraine’s people.

“These were some of the scariest moments of my life,” Andriy told Associated Press while recounting the early days of the Russian invasion.

“We provided the photos and the location to the armed forces. They narrowed down the coordinates more accurately and transmitted them by walkie-talkie, so as to adjust the artillery.”

While Stanislav helps with the process, it is Andriy who pilots the drone. “I can operate the drone, but my son does it much better. We immediately decided he would do it,” Stanislav said.

With the Russian military approaching their village on the western side of Kyiv, they kept operating their drones to gather information before they had to move out in order to avoid getting captured. They were not clear about the impact of their actions but according to Andriy, "around 20 tanks" were destroyed.

Andriy went to Poland with his family but came back to join his father after a few weeks.

'Hero of Ukraine': 15-year-old boy who stopped Russian tanks with help of his toy drone

Russia earned nearly 100 billion dollars from export of fossil fuels during the first 100 days of Ukraine war, research has revealed. The research has said that most of USD 98 billion worth of fossil fuels has been sent to the European Union.

The study has been done by Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), an independent, Finland-based group. The study report has come as Kyiv is urging the West to sever all ties with Russia.

Europe is heavily dependent on Russian oil. Earlier this month, the EU agreed to halt most of these imports. Though the bloc aims to reduce gas shipments by two-thirds this year, an embargo is not in the cards at present.

As per the research report, supply to EU made up 61 per cent of Russia's fossil fuel exports in first 100 days of Ukraine war. The exports were worth USD 60 billion. China was the top importer at 12.6 billion euros, Germany (12.1 billion) and Italy (7.8 billion).

Russia's fossil fuel revenues come first from the sale of crude oil (46 billion), followed by pipeline gas, oil products, liquefied natural gas (LNG) and coal.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24. Russia's exports plunged in May as countries and companies moved away from purchase. However, global rise in fossil fuel prices benefitted Russia.

The report added that some countries like China, India, the UAE and France had upped their purchases from Russia.

Russia earns almost USD 100 bn from fuel exports in 100 days of Ukraine conflict

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has crossed 100 days and the sanctions imposed by the United States and major European countries have caused a lot of damage to the Russian economy. With the ongoing crisis, a lot of countries have also decided to stop importing oil and natural gas from Russia. However, according to research conducted by Finland-based Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), Russia remains the top exporter of fossil fuel with $98bn in total earnings since the war in Ukraine started. European Union remains the top importer of Russian oil and natural gas.

Before the war started in Ukraine, Russia accounted for 40 percent of the European Union’s gas and 27 percent of its imported oil. However, since the crisis started, the EU have taken steps to reduce their import, but no complete ban has been placed yet despite multiple requests from Ukraine.

The report claims that EU accounted for 61 per cent of the total exports during the first 100 days of the war. The other importers were China, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey and Poland.

The report also said that Russia’s income came from crude oil ($48.2bn), followed by pipeline gas ($25.1bn), oil products ($13.6bn), liquefied natural gas, or LNG, ($5.3bn) and coal ($4.8bn).

Although the amount of oil and gas exported by Russia decreased in the time period, it was balanced by the authorities with higher prices. According to CREA, the prices were almost 60 per cent higher.

“India became a significant importer of Russian crude oil, buying 18% of the country’s exports,” CREA said, adding that a “significant share of the crude is re-exported as refined oil products”.

Russia earns almost USD 100 bn from fuel exports in 100 days of Ukraine war

A topic that dominated the crucial Shangri-La talks in Singapore was a Russian invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian president Vladimir Zelensky spoke at the summit virtually from an undisclosed location.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has already crossed 100 days and the Russian military have slowly gained control over a number of areas around Ukraine. However, there seems to be another problem that is plaguing Ukraine amid the ongoing crisis. According to an international team of academics and digital technology experts who are tracking thefts, there is a specialist gang active in Ukraine who are smuggling historic artifacts to Russia by taking advantage of the current situation.

“There is now very strong evidence this is a purposive Russian move, with specific paintings and ornaments targeted and taken out to Russia,” anthropologist Brian Daniels told The Guardian.

The team believes that the most smuggled item from Ukraine at the moment is Scythian gold. The tribes known as Scythia of central Asia and eastern Europe built these valuable filigree pieces many years ago and there is a considerable amount of them present in parts of Ukraine at this point.

“These items are visually stunning, and there are now so many reports of thefts it is evident that it is a strategy. The Ukrainians, of course, are also very keen that we establish a list of stolen items,”

“We have growing concern for the museum workers and security staff, particularly when they find themselves behind Russian lines,” said Daniels while explaining the current situation in Ukraine.

Ukraine 'will prevail' over Russia with global support, says Volodymyr Zelensky

Gone are the times when tourists lay down on the Black Sea beaches of the Ukrainian resort town of Odesa, the white sands are now covered in mines because of the war with Russia and police officers patrol the boardwalks.

Ukraine's military planted mines along the coast in case of a Russian amphibious assault after Moscow's February 24 invasion, cordoning off beach entrances with red and white tape to ensure civilians don't get hurt.

Already reeling from the war, the local economy of the port city of Odesa in southwestern Ukraine will take a huge hit to its tourism industry this year. Long-time residents cannot imagine life in Odesa without the sand and sea.

"We can't live without the sea. If not for the sea, there would probably be no Odesa," said 82-year-old resident Viktor Holchenko.

Signs posted by Ukraine's military warn residents to stay away from the beaches where mines have been buried. From a seaside restaurant, the view is now of a "Danger! mines" sign.

Residents laid out beach towels along boardwalks instead of on beaches to tan in their bathing suits.
"They (the military) said not to go there (to the seaside)," said 18-year-old resident Kyrylo Zinchenko. "Why would you go there? This is the summer we will have."

First Russian passports handed out to Ukrainians in Kherson region: Report

Ukraine says that it has almost run out of ammunition and is now heavily dependant on weapons from the West.

Ukraine pleaded to Western countries for faster deliveries of weapons as better-armed Russian forces pounded the east of the country.

In Sievierodonetsk, the small city that has become the focus of Russia's advance in eastern Ukraine and one of the bloodiest flashpoints in a war well into its fourth month, further heavy fighting was reported.

The war in the east, where Russia is focusing its attention, is now primarily an artillery battle in which Kyiv is severely outgunned, Ukrainian officials say. That means the tide of events could be turned only if Washington and others fulfil promises to send more and better weaponry, including rocket systems.

Three fighters who were captured while fighting for Ukraine and sentenced to death are being used as ‘hostages’ by Russia to put pressure on the West over peace negotiations, a senior Ukrainian official said on Friday.

"The trial of the foreigners raises the stakes in the Russian Federation's negotiation process. They are using them as hostages to put pressure on the world over the negotiation process," he told national television.

Two Britons and a Moroccan received the death sentence on Thursday from a court in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), one of Russia's proxies in eastern Ukraine, Russian news agencies reported.

They were brought to trial after a Ukrainian court sentenced a Russian soldier to life in prison last month for killing an unarmed civilian in Ukraine.

Kyiv said Thursday's court ruling had no authority, that the fighters were members of the Ukrainian armed forces and that they were subject to Geneva Convention protections.

Germany will help Ukraine provide medical help for war victims by helping build trauma centres for the wounded, donating prosthetic limbs and deploying German doctors to the country, Health Minister Karl Lauterbach said on Friday.

The aid would include Germany helping to supply prostheses, deploying 200 doctors in Ukraine, setting up training on treating burns and connecting some hospitals in Ukraine to a telemedicine service, the ministry said in a statement.

Germany's largest artificial limb maker, Ottobock, is already in talks with the health ministry to help produce and fit prostheses in mobile container workshops and train orthopaedic specialists directly in Ukraine, a company spokesperson said.
