Odessa has been at the centre of a conflict between the Russian military and the Ukrainian resistance forces for quite some time and the city has been ravaged by missile strikes. A lot of people have already fled the region but Ukrainian forces continue to mount resistance.

The incident in Odessa came just days after 18 people were killed due to a similar attack on a shopping centre in Kremenchuk, in central Ukraine. While Ukrainian authorities blamed Russia for the attack, Vladimir Putin denied any responsibility in response to the accusations.

Earlier, the Russian military evacuated the Black Sea outpost of Snake Island in a symbolic advantage to Ukraine. The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that it had finished the tasks it had been given and the decision to pull back was taken to allow grains to be exported from the ports.

Its purchase of the island in 1982 was inspired, in part, by the tradition of Irish Catholic monks secluding themselves on islands and in other hermitages for spiritual reflection. Tulasi Priyal, a 67-year-old member originally from Dublin, said the island temple had become a "focal point" for Hare Krishna followers and other Hindus across Ireland.

More than $330 billion of Russian assets frozen by Ukraine allies till now

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Thursday that Russia's pullout from captured Snake Island shows futility of President Putin's strategoc goals in Ukraine.

"In the end, it will prove impossible for Putin to hold down a country that will not accept his rule," Johnson told a news conference after a NATO summit in Madrid.

Johnson added that agreement over any peace deal would be entirely upto Ukraine. He stressed&nbsp;unity against Russia from the NATO alliance and from G7 countries at a leaders' summit in Germany.

"We've seen what Ukraine can do to drive the Russians back," Johnson said.

"We've seen what they did around Kyiv and Kharkiv, now on Snake Island. I think the right thing for us is to keep going on the course that NATO has set out, no matter how difficult."

At the G7 summit, Johnson joked to fellow leaders that they could emulate Putin by posing topless to show their toughness.

The Russian leader responded that seeing Johnson and the other leaders half-naked would be "disgusting".

The prime minister refused to extend the war of words, arguing that Putin should reflect instead "about the consequences of his barbaric actions", including NATO's planned admission of Finland and Sweden.

"The most important conclusion that Vladimir Putin needs to draw from today and the last few days at NATO, and previously in the G7, is we are totally united in condemning what he has done in Ukraine," Johnson said.

Driven by Russia's actions, NATO members were committed to spending at least 2.0 percent of their gross domestic product on defence, he stressed.&nbsp;

Britain "will reach 2.5 percent of GDP on defence by the end of the decade", he added, although a row has erupted in London over whether Johnson's government is indeed sticking to that commitment.

The G20 summit can possibly be the first time that Zelensky will be in the same event as Russian President Vladimir Putin since the Russian invasion of Ukraine started in February. Both leaders have appeared in same events but that has mainly been through video links. Widodo will be travelling next to Moscow in order to meet Putin and invite him personally to the G20 Summit.

In a massive prisoner exchange, 144 soldiers, most former defenders of the Azovstal steelworks in the southern port city of Mariupol, had been freed in a prisoner swap with Moscow on Wednesday, Ukrainian officials said, as reported by AFP.

"This is the largest exchange since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion," the main intelligence directorate of Ukraine's defence ministry said on Telegram. "Of the 144 freed, 95 are Azovstal defenders," he added.&nbsp;

It did not specify when and where the swap took place or how many Russian prisoners were released as part of the exchange. But Pro-Russian separatist leader Denis Pushilin said 144 soldiers from Russia and the Donetsk People's Republic -- the name of the breakaway region recognised by Moscow -- had "returned home".

The Ukrainian ministry statement said most of their exchanged soldiers had been seriously wounded by bullets or shell fragments, while others were suffering from burns and fractures.&nbsp;

It said that 43 of the freed servicemen belonged to the Azov regiment, a former paramilitary unit that is now integrated into the Ukrainian army.&nbsp;

Russia considers the unit a neo-Nazi organisation and has previously said its soldiers should stand trial.

Moscow and Kyiv have exchanged prisoners several times since Russia invaded on February 24.

The most recent previous exchange took place on Tuesday and involved 17 Ukrainian prisoners.

In a rare moment at United Nations, Russia, Ukraine and other Western countries agreed to be on the same page over a key UN road safety issue meeting, thanks to deft diplomacy by President of United Nations General Assembly Abdulla Shahid and Indian Diplomat Nagraj Naidu.&nbsp;

Ambassador Naidu is Chef de Cabinet of President of United Nations General Assembly Abdulla Shahid and led the informal inter-governmental consultations.&nbsp;

United Nations General Assembly will convene a high-level meeting on road safety in New York from 30 June – 1 July that will see the adoption of the political declaration. It is being touted as the most awaited event during the current 76th session of the General Assembly.&nbsp;

Speaking to WION, President of United Nations General Assembly Abdulla Shahid said, "These very testing times, to have member states rise above their differences and reach consensus on a very pressing issue such as road safety is nothing but the triumph of multilateralism."&nbsp;

In the backdrop of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the meeting and adoption of the political statement were headed for a derailment. Russia and Cote d’Ivoire were the co-facilitators of the road safety process, and many Western European and Others Group (WEOG) countries including the US, Canada, New Zealand and the EU as a group joined by Japan and South Korea wanted the President of the General Assembly to remove the Russian delegate as one of the co-facilitators of the process.&nbsp;

The WEOG countries refused to engage on any elements of a draft text that were previously used by the Russian and Cote d’Ivoire co-facilitators.&nbsp;

He explained, "When the road safety process led by the cofacilitators - Russia and Côte d’Ivoire reached a stalemate, as the President of the General Assembly, I had a responsibility of delivering a political declaration for the High Level Meeting on Global Road Safety".&nbsp;

"I have termed my Presidency as the “Presidency of Hope”, and I am firmly of the view that while Member States have their views on issues, it’s always possible to bring everyone together," he added.&nbsp;

He said, "When the process came back to me, I assured Member States that I would have my Office lead a transparent process and deliver a political declaration that would be concise, and action-oriented."&nbsp;

Highlighting how all parties were brought together, he said, "We had very limited time, less than two weeks, but also had to deliver an ambitious political declaration. What we set out in all sincerity, is what we achieved", and pointed, "this is a victory for multilateralism. Together, we can always deliver."&nbsp;

The removal of Russia as a co-facilitator would have set wrong precedence in the General Assembly. Procedurally no President of the General Assembly had ever removed a co-facilitator on the back of reservations expressed by member countries.&nbsp;

Amidst the stalemate, no forward movement on the process took place. Even the "silence procedure" was soon broken on the draft text submitted by the Russian and Cote d’Ivoire co-facilitators.&nbsp;

Member states had given up hope that a political declaration on road safety, a completely non-political process could be held up because of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.&nbsp;

However, following President Shahid’s decision to have the intergovernmental consultations on the political declaration led by his Chef de Cabinet Ambassador Naidu, a new draft text was soon circulated among the member states.&nbsp;

With just three informal meetings and a lot of skilful negotiations behind the scenes with key delegations including Russia and Ukraine, it was ensured that the "silence" on the text was not broken by 6 pm on 27 June.&nbsp;

The road safety meeting will see the UN working to act on the issue. The political declaration is expected to be adopted by the Assembly in the morning on 30 June. The declaration will focus on the future of mobility, one that promotes health and well-being. The political declaration also seeks to convene a follow-up meeting on road safety in 2026, in an effort to sustain momentum.&nbsp;

Also, starting on Thursday morning, a floral bouquet will be displayed in the General Assembly lobby, in memory of those who have been victims of road-related crashes globally. The flowers will be available until Friday evening.&nbsp;

Each year, road traffic crashes cause nearly 1.3 million preventable deaths and an estimated 50 million injuries – making it the leading killer of children and young people worldwide. Nine of every ten road traffic deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. One of four is a pedestrian or a cyclist.&nbsp;

Lunin wrote on Telegram that 21 people were hospitalised while 29 others were given first aid.

"It's an act of terrorism against civilians," he said according to a report by Reuters.

Sergiy Gaiday, governor of the Lugansk region in Ukraine, also said on Monday that eight civilians in the city of Lysychansk were killed by a Russian strike. The governor said that they were out collecting water when Russia forces fired on the crowd with Uragan multiple rocket-launchers.

“Today in Lysychansk, the Russians fired on a crowd of people with Uragan multiple rocket-launchers, as civilians were collecting water from a cistern,” Gaiday posted on Telegram.

“Eight residents are dead, 21 have been taken to hospital,” he added.

The Russian forces captured the city of Severodonetsk and they have now turned their attention towards its twin city – Lysychansk. The military has been looking to establish their complete domination in the Donbas territory and Lysychansk is their next target in the region.
