Russian Defence Ministry said on Wednesday (July 13) that Russia had shot down three Ukrainian fighter jets. As per details released during the daily briefing, the defence ministry said Su-25 and Su-24 fighter jets being used by Ukrainian air force were shot down over Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine. Third Ukrainian fighter jet was MiG-29, which the ministry said was shot down in the Mykolaiv region in the southern Ukraine. All these fighter jets are Soviet-designed planes being used by Ukrainian air force.

There was no immediate reaction from Ukraine.

Amid hostilities between Ukraine and Russia, both countries are also holding dialogue to break deadlock over grain exports from Ukraine often called 'bread basket of Europe'. Officials from both countries met United Nations and Turkish officials on Wednesday to discuss.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday (July 11) expanded fast-track route to Russian citizenship and made it available for all Ukrainians. Putin signed a decree to this effect. Till recently, only residents of Ukraine's Donetsk and Luhansk regions and residents of southern Zaporizhzhia and the Kherson regions were eligible for the fast-track route. Now, Putin's decree has made the mechanism available to all Ukrainians. There was no immediate reaction from Ukrainian officials on this development.

Between 2019, when the procedure was first introduced for the residents of Donetsk and Luhansk, and this year, more than 720,000 residents of the rebel-held areas in the two regions "about 18% of the population" have received Russian passports.

Putin signs decree giving all Ukrainians path to Russian citizenship

The chief executive of Ukraine's cricket board says it "ticks all the boxes" to become an associate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and that the game would not survive if it was denied entry. Ukraine is expected to get second-tier membership at the governing body`s board meeting this month, entitling the war-torn country to Twenty20 International status and funds from the ICC, which has earmarked $30.8 million for its 96 associate members this year.

The Ukraine Cricket Federation (UCF) has been organising cricket for the last two decades and has a pool of 15,000 students, most of them Indian, at the senior level. Its chief executive Kobus Olivier told Reuters it met all the ICC requirements before Russia invaded.

"We ticked all the boxes on Feb. 24 when the war started," he said. "I have so much belief in this process ... and I am absolutely confident Ukraine will be an associate member of the ICC." Olivier, a South African, said the ICC should take note of how the EU "fast-tracked" Ukraine`s candidate status to join the bloc, saying it set a "very good precedent".

UCF President Hardeep Singh has made arrangements for national team players to train in India while Olivier set up base in Zagreb after fleeing Kyiv. He is effectively running the UCF`s junior and women cricket programmes from Zagreb and engaging refugees, mostly mothers and children, in cricket-in-the-park sessions three days a week.

"These refugee mothers are actually going to make the Ukrainian national team in a couple of years," said Olivier, whose own escape from Kyiv, along with his four pet dogs, is the subject of a documentary.
Olivier is also planning to host a `Ukrainian Freedom Cup` in Zagreb next month with teams from Serbia, Slovenia, Hungary and Czech Republic. If the ICC rejects its membership application the consequences for the game in Ukraine would be dire, Olivier said.

"It will be the end of cricket in Ukraine," he said. The Lord`s Taverners, a British charity, and the MCC Foundation, the charity arm of cricket`s lawmakers, have given support to the UCF but sponsorship funds have dried up.

ICC membership would make the UCF eligible for government funding and could attract new sponsors.
"It will be a snowball effect," said Olivier.

Ukrainian defenders battled on Saturday to contain Russian forces along several fronts, officials said, as the United States pressed China to align itself with the West in opposing the invasion following an ill-tempered G20 meeting.

A missile strike on the northeastern city of Kharkiv wounded three civilians, its governor said, though Russia's main attacks appeared focused southeast of there in Luhansk and Donetsk.

The two provinces, swathes of which were already held by pro-Russian separatists before Russia's invasion in February, comprise the eastern industrial region of the Donbas.

Ukrainian officials reported strikes in both on Saturday, while Britain's Ministry of Defence said in a regular bulletin that Moscow was assembling reserve forces from across Russia near Ukraine.

Donetsk regional Governor Pavlo Kyrylenko said on the Telegram messaging service that a Russian missile had struck Druzhkivka, a town behind the front line, and reported shelling of other population centres.

Luhansk Governor Serhiy Gaidai said on Telegram that Russian forces were "firing along the entire front line", but later said a Ukrainian counter-attack had hit Russian weapons and ammunition stores and forced Moscow to halt its offensive.

Russia, which claimed control over all of Luhansk province last weekend, denies targeting civilians.

On Friday, Ukraine had pleaded for more of the high-end weapons from the West that Kyiv said had thus far enabled it to slow Russia's advance.

Hours later, US President Joe Biden signed a new weapons package for Ukraine worth up to 400 million dollars, including four additional high mobility artillery rocket systems (HIMARS).

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Biden for armaments he said were priority needs. "It is what helps us press on the enemy", he said on Twitter.

Commenting on the supply of weapons, the Russian embassy in Washington said the United States wanted to "prolong the conflict at all costs" and compensate for Ukrainian military losses.

Russia threatens broad Ukraine offensive as US presses China over war stance

The United States will be sending around $400 million worth of new weapons to Ukraine as support in the ongoing crisis against Russia. This announcement comes days after more funding was promised by both the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom. According to Reuters, a senior US defense official said that US has sent 12 HIMARS to Ukraine since the start of the conflict.

"Ukraine has now been successfully striking Russian locations in Ukraine, deeper behind the front lines and disrupting Russia's ability to conduct that artillery operation," the official told Reuters on the condition of anonymity.

Earlier, Russia claimed that they destroyed two HIMARS systems and some additional ammunition during an attack in eastern Ukraine. However, the official denied any such report and said that all the HIMARS provided by the US to Ukraine are currently accounted for by the authorities.

The new package order includes more precise ammunition for howitzer artillery systems – a system unique to the US military, according to Reuters. With the passage of time, Ukraine have received more advanced weaponry from the US and according to official data, the United States has now committed approximately $7.3 billion to the war efforts since the invasion started back in February.

The ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine has created a massive crisis when it comes to both global peace and economy. The people of Ukraine have faced a lot of trouble in the recent past and fighting is still going on in different parts of the country. While the situation in Ukraine has not improved much, Russia have found a new way to troll the US and UK for their continued support to Ukraine. In Moscow, the authorities have renamed the streets in front of both of their embassies to two separatist regions of Ukraine. Donetsk and Luhansk are considered to be “people’s republics” by Russia after they gained a lot of ground in the regions but both UK and US have not accepted it.

At present, the street in front of the British Embassy was renamed to the Luhansk People’s Republic Square, according to Associated Press. A similar incident happened when it comes to the US Embassy in Moscow which is located on the newly named Donetsk People’s Republic Square.

This is not something new as the United States also employed the same tactics during the Cold War. In the 1980s, the street outside the Russian Embassy was renamed Andrei Sakharov Plaza – a reference to the Soviet nuclear physicist and a major human rights activist in Soviet Russia.
