The Ukrainian army has accused Russia of using phosphorus bombs on Snake Island as Moscow decided to withdraw its forces from the strategic position in the Black Sea. “Today at around 18:00... Russian air force SU-30 planes twice conducted strikes with phosphorus bombs on Zmiinyi island,” the Ukrainian forces said according to AFP.

The name ‘Zmiinyi island’ is another name given to snake island. However, the Russian defense ministry completely denied any accusations and described the move to leave Snake Island as “a gesture of goodwill” which shows that Russia will not be interfering with the United Nations’ attempt to organise protected grain exports from Ukraine.

New ‘iron curtain’ descending between Russia and West, says defence minister

As NATO leaders met in Madrid this week, Ukraine demanded new heavy weapons to defeat Russia’s invasion. So what has been promised and what has been delivered? For more details, we're joined by VOA’s Jessica Stone.

Soon after Vladimir Putin unleashed Russia’s onslaught on Ukraine on 24 February, Oleksandr Usyk, the IBF, WBA and WBO world heavyweight champion and his friend Vasiliy Lomachenko, another of the best boxers in the world, joined the military. But as he patrolled the streets, carrying a machine gun rather than boxing gloves, dread gripped Usyk.

As reported by The Guardian, Oleksandr said, “Every day I was there, I was praying and asking: ‘Please, God, don’t let anybody try to kill me. Please don’t let anybody shoot me. And please don’t make me shoot any other person.”

“My family is not in Ukraine but a lot of my close friends are still in the country. I’m in touch with them every day. I ask them because it’s very important for me, how are they feeling? Are they in a safe place? I want to live there and right after the fight I’m going back to Ukraine,” he added.

On being asked if he will return as a soldier? Usyk said that “nobody will let me go to the front line. But a lot of my close friends are on the front line. I’m supporting them and with this fight, I want to bring them some kind of joy in between what they do.”

As reported by The Guardian, Usyk shrugs and concentrates instead on the propaganda that is being beamed into ordinary Russian homes. “I don’t believe what they are saying because they are not showing what is true in their country. They are bombing soldiers. They are bombing army battalions. But they are not showing the bombs landing on civilian houses or hospitals. Russian missile strike in Odessa kills at least ten people, says Ukraine

It has been more than 100 days since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In the last few months, Ukraine has transitioned from a country known for its unique architecture to a war-ravaged country.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February, a Hare Krishna temple, nestled among the reeds of Northern Ireland's Lough Erne, the wooded island of Inish Rath has become a sanctuary for devotees fleeing the city of Mariupol, which fell to Russian troops after a brutal siege in May, as reported by AFP.

"We left Mariupol because it is completely burned down," Ruskin Khabibullin, a leading member of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in Ukraine. "They bombed the buildings, bombed our apartment and office," he added.

Since April, Inish Rath's temple, located in a 19th-century hunting lodge reachable only by boat, has been home to Khabibullin, 48, his wife Tatiana and their 14-year-old son Nikita. In the peace of the island where deer and peacocks roam, Khabibullin said the family are starting to recover from the horrors of the devastated port city.

ISKCON, which is known commonly as the Hare Krishna movement, was founded in the 1960s and is an offshoot of a historic line of Hinduism. The movement, which claims to have one million members worldwide, expanded rapidly into eastern Europe after the fall of the Soviet Union.

Its purchase of the island in 1982 was inspired, in part, by the tradition of Irish Catholic monks secluding themselves on islands and in other hermitages for spiritual reflection. Tulasi Priyal, a 67-year-old member originally from Dublin, said the island temple had become a "focal point" for Hare Krishna followers and other Hindus across Ireland.

Even if the future is uncertain, Khabibullin said his faith will remain constant. "It's impossible to predict, to think about returning or not because it is unknown what's going to happen with Ukraine when the war will be over," he said, as reported by AFP.

More than $330 billion of Russian assets frozen by Ukraine allies till now

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Thursday that Russia's pullout from captured Snake Island shows futility of President Putin's strategoc goals in Ukraine.

"In the end, it will prove impossible for Putin to hold down a country that will not accept his rule," Johnson told a news conference after a NATO summit in Madrid.

Johnson added that agreement over any peace deal would be entirely upto Ukraine. He stressed unity against Russia from the NATO alliance and from G7 countries at a leaders' summit in Germany.

"We've seen what Ukraine can do to drive the Russians back," Johnson said.

"We've seen what they did around Kyiv and Kharkiv, now on Snake Island. I think the right thing for us is to keep going on the course that NATO has set out, no matter how difficult."

At the G7 summit, Johnson joked to fellow leaders that they could emulate Putin by posing topless to show their toughness.

The Russian leader responded that seeing Johnson and the other leaders half-naked would be "disgusting".

The prime minister refused to extend the war of words, arguing that Putin should reflect instead "about the consequences of his barbaric actions", including NATO's planned admission of Finland and Sweden.

"The most important conclusion that Vladimir Putin needs to draw from today and the last few days at NATO, and previously in the G7, is we are totally united in condemning what he has done in Ukraine," Johnson said.

Driven by Russia's actions, NATO members were committed to spending at least 2.0 percent of their gross domestic product on defence, he stressed.

Britain "will reach 2.5 percent of GDP on defence by the end of the decade", he added, although a row has erupted in London over whether Johnson's government is indeed sticking to that commitment.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Thursday that Russia's pullout from captured Snake Island shows futility of President Putin's strategoc goals in Ukraine.

I think the right thing for us is to keep going on the course that NATO has set out, no matter how difficult." At the G7 summit, Johnson joked to fellow leaders that they could emulate Putin by posing topless to show their toughness. 'Impossible' to subdue Ukraine, says UK after Russian retreat from Snake Island

The invasion of Ukraine and the accompanying political crackdown came as an end for many LGBT Russian artists but helped by a Paris charity, they have found a new home in France, as reported by AFP.

Alexei, a 23-year-old composer, used to believe that he could ride out President Vladimir Putin's regime, but watching his friends being arrested or fleeing the country in the wake of the war, he felt he had been naive.

"The war caused me pain, shame and guilt -- you tell yourself that you haven't done enough against this regime," Alexei, who did not want to give his full name, told AFP.

He knew he had made the right decision to leave when he heard that police had visited the St Petersburg music school where he was a teacher, accusing it of promoting "LGBT propaganda" over a photo of Alexei kissing his boyfriend on its Facebook page.

He came to Paris with the help of a support group, the Agency of Artists in Exile, and was joined by his boyfriend soon after.

The agency set up a hotline for artists from both Ukraine and Russia following the invasion and has helped around 100 artists from the two countries, providing them with studio space, as well as help with visas, language training and psychological support.

As he plays Rachmaninov -- a Russian composer -- in one of the agency's practice rooms, Alexei says he is relieved but daunted.

"Here, I have some freedom," he said. "I just don't know what to do with that freedom."

The transfer of $1.3 billion in economic aid to Ukraine as part of the initial $7.5 billion promised to Kyiv by the Biden administration in May has been done, the US Treasury Department announced on Wednesday, as reported by AFP.

"With this delivery of economic assistance, we reaffirm our resolute commitment to the people of Ukraine as they defend themselves against Putin's war of aggression and work to sustain their economy," Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement.

The payment, part of the $7.5 billion aid package signed by President Joe Biden in May, is set to be made through the World Bank.

According to World Bank estimates, the war, which began with Russia's invasion of its former Soviet neighbour in February, could cause the Ukrainian economy to contract by up to 45 per cent in 2022.

The country is currently running a budget deficit that is growing by $5 billion every month, exacerbated by its inability to raise funds or access financing on external markets.

Allies have rushed to pump Ukraine with aid, with the G7 and the European Union also announcing commitments of $29.6 billion in further money for Kyiv, with $8.5 billion of that coming from the United States, according to the Treasury Department.

Washington already disbursed two payments of $500 million of that through the World Bank in April and May to help cover Ukraine's immediate costs as it dealt with "Russia's unprovoked and unjustified invasion," the Treasury said.

Washington has already supplied Kyiv with more than $6 billion in military equipment since Russia's invasion.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday that he will be attending the G20 summit to be held in Indonesia later this year, but a lot will depend on the ongoing Russian invasion and also the composition of participants in the event. Widodo arrived in Kyiv earlier on Wednesday and he also visited the city of Irpin which has been ravaged by the constant conflict.

The G20 summit can possibly be the first time that Zelensky will be in the same event as Russian President Vladimir Putin since the Russian invasion of Ukraine started in February. Both leaders have appeared in same events but that has mainly been through video links. Widodo will be travelling next to Moscow in order to meet Putin and invite him personally to the G20 Summit.

Syria recognised the independence of eastern Ukraine's two separatist republics on Wednesday, making it the first state other than Russia to do so, as reported by AFP. The breakaway states of Donetsk and Lugansk, whose independence Moscow recognised in February, are situated in the Donbas region at the centre of Russia's invasion and have escaped Kyiv's control since 2014.

"The Syrian Arab Republic has decided to recognise the independence and sovereignty of both the Lugansk People's Republic and the Donetsk People's Republic," a source at Syria's foreign ministry told the official SANA news agency.

"We will communicate with both countries to agree on frameworks for strengthening relations, including establishing diplomatic relations in accordance with established rules," the source said, as reported by AFP.

Earlier this month, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad met with a Russian delegation and representatives of the Donetsk republic. During the meeting, he said Damascus was ready to start political relations with Donetsk.

This is not the first time that the Syrian government, which since 2015 has been heavily backed by Russia in its own civil war, has supported Moscow's recognition of breakaway states. In a massive prisoner exchange, 144 soldiers, most former defenders of the Azovstal steelworks in the southern port city of Mariupol, had been freed in a prisoner swap with Moscow on Wednesday, Ukrainian officials said, as reported by AFP.

"This is the largest exchange since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion," the main intelligence directorate of Ukraine's defence ministry said on Telegram. "Of the 144 freed, 95 are Azovstal defenders," he added.

It did not specify when and where the swap took place or how many Russian prisoners were released as part of the exchange. But Pro-Russian separatist leader Denis Pushilin said 144 soldiers from Russia and the Donetsk People's Republic -- the name of the breakaway region recognised by Moscow -- had "returned home".

The Ukrainian ministry statement said most of their exchanged soldiers had been seriously wounded by bullets or shell fragments, while others were suffering from burns and fractures.

It said that 43 of the freed servicemen belonged to the Azov regiment, a former paramilitary unit that is now integrated into the Ukrainian army.
