This prolonged warfare has significantly increased the demand for shells and ammunition, depleting the stockpiles of Western countries as well. The nature of the conflict has taken on a WW1-style, with high levels of ammunition consumption, posing significant geopolitical and military challenges for all parties involved.

Numerous ministers of NATO countries have expressed apprehension about the shortage of ammunition. Even the General Secretary of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, recently stated that the rate of ammunition consumption in Ukraine has outstripped the production capabilities of NATO countries. While efforts are underway to increase production, Stoltenberg acknowledged that time is of the essence in this conflict and ramping up production will take some time. The situation presents a significant challenge for NATO and its member countries as they seek to support Ukraine in its fight.

<h2>Capacity to produce ammunition</h2>

Capacity of the USA to produce 155mm shells: The United States is currently producing 14,000 155mm shells per month, with plans to increase production to 20,000 by the spring of this year and to 40,000 by 2025.

Indeed, even if the United States were to produce shells at the increased capacity of 20,000 per month, the total output would only be 240,000 shells per year. This figure falls far short of the 1 million shells that the US has pledged to provide as part of its security assistance to Ukraine.

The United States is taking proactive measures to address the shortage of ammunition in Ukraine by leveraging stockpiles located in Israel and South Korea. In a recent agreement between the US and Israel, it was decided that 300,000 155mm shells would be dispatched to Ukraine. Furthermore, the US has also initiated plans to purchase 100,000 rounds of 155-mm artillery ammunition from South Korea.

"The decisions of the International Criminal Court have no meaning for our country, including from a legal point of view," said Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. The Tass news agency, citing Kremlin, reported that Putin flew to the southern port city by helicopter.&nbsp;

"Putin flew to Mariupol by helicopter, then driving a car drove around several districts of the city and making stops. In the Nevsky microdistrict, Putin spoke with the townspeople. He also examined the coastline of Mariupol," Kremlin said in a statement, the TASS report said.

The Russian leader also met with the top command of his military operation in Ukraine, including Chief of the General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, who is in charge of Moscow's offensive in Ukraine,&nbsp;state media reported.

The meeting took place at the Rostov-on-Don command post in southern Russia,&nbsp;TASS&nbsp; reported further.

Putin was in Crimea on Saturday to mark the ninth anniversary of the peninsula's annexation.&nbsp;His visit came just a day after the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant against him, accusing him&nbsp;of war crimes pertaining to the deportation of children. Russia has dismissed these allegations but Putin himself is yet to comment on the arrest warrant.

The Turkish president did not specify for how long the deal was extended. Turkey had earlier said that it was in favour of 120-day extension while Russia wanted a 60-day extension.

"This deal is of vital importance for the global food supply. I thank Russia and Ukraine, who didn't spare their efforts for a new extension, as well as the United Nations secretary general."

Ukraine is one of the world's top producers, and the so-called Black Sea Grain Initiative has helped soothe the global food crunch triggered by the conflict.

The US&nbsp;declared on Friday it would&nbsp;oppose any attempt by China to establish a truce in Ukraine at the meeting that amounts to a "ratification of Russian annexation" of Ukrainian territory,&nbsp;reported the Associated Press.&nbsp;

John Kirby, a spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, urged Xi to get in touch with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, to learn about his nation's perspective on the conflict and steer clear of any "one-sided" proposals.&nbsp;

By refusing to denounce Moscow's aggressiveness and announcing a "no-limits" friendship with Russia last year, China has attempted to portray itself as impartial in the war. Beijing has criticised Western sanctions imposed on Moscow and claimed that NATO and the United States were responsible for inciting Putin to use force.&nbsp;

The sovereignty and territorial integrity of any nation should be respected, China has maintained throughout the conflict. It's not clear, though, whether it agrees with Moscow's assertions that it has occupied Ukrainian land.

Xi’s visit would be his his first meeting with Putin since September, when they met on the sidelines of a regional summit in Uzbekistan. Prior to&nbsp;that, Putin attended the opening of the 2022 Beijing Winter Games and met with Xi shortly&nbsp;before launching an attack on Ukraine.&nbsp;

Putin invited Xi to visit Russia during a video conference call the two made in late December. It may "demonstrate to the whole world the strength of the Russian-Chinese ties" and "become the main political event of the year in bilateral relations," according to Putin.

Moscow is willing to explore serious solutions for settling the Ukrainian crisis but will not accept ultimatums, according to a statement released on Saturday by Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman for the Russian foreign ministry.&nbsp;

When commenting on Ukrainian foreign minister Dmitry Kuleba’s remark about the significance&nbsp;of Zelensky’s "peace formula," she said: "Unfortunately, it is another attempt by the Ukrainian authorities to mislead the international community and its own people," as reported by Tass news agency.&nbsp;

"Zelensky’s so-called ‘peace formula’ has nothing to do with peace. It is just a list of ultimatum demands for Russia, which are detached from reality. The plan particularly demands that Russian troops be withdrawn from Russian regions (the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions and even Crimea), Russia pay reparations and even plead guilty at international tribunals. The goal of the Ukrainian ‘peace formula’ is to make Russia surrender with Western help," Zakharova noted.

"We have repeatedly stated that we are open to really serious proposals from the West and Ukraine on finding a political and diplomatic solution to the crisis but we will not accept the language of ultimatums," the Russian diplomat added.&nbsp;

In addition, the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine need to take place, all threats coming from its territory need to be eliminated and its non-nuclear status needs to be guaranteed along with respect for the rights of Russian speakers and ethnic minorities," Zakharova said.

When commenting on Ukrainian foreign minister Dmitry Kuleba’s remark about the significance of Zelensky’s "peace formula," she said: "Unfortunately, it is another attempt by the Ukrainian authorities to mislead the international community and its own people," as reported by Tass news agency. "Zelensky’s so-called ‘peace formula’ has nothing to do with peace. It is just a list of ultimatum demands for Russia, which are detached from reality. The plan particularly demands that Russian troops be withdrawn from Russian regions (the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions and even Crimea), Russia pay reparations and even plead guilty at international tribunals. The goal of the Ukrainian ‘peace formula’ is to make Russia surrender with Western help," Zakharova noted. On Friday, the international criminal court announced an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin. The warrant against the Russian President is based on the war crime accusation of unlawfully deporting Ukrainian children. The Hague-based court said it had also issued a warrant against Maria Vovabilova, Russia's presidential commissioner for children's rights. According to Kyiv, over 16,000 children have been deported to Russia. The International Criminal Court said judges found there were reasonable grounds to suspect Putin's criminal responsibility.

Pretext of Iraq war just an ‘excuse’: Tony Blair denounces Putin’s Ukraine invasion

The Kremlin as well as Beijing have recently confirmed Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Russia from March 20 to 22. This comes weeks after Beijing proposed a 12-point peace plan urging both sides to agree to a gradual de-escalation. Similarly, a report by the Wall Street Journal, earlier this week, also suggested that Xi may hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which would be the first time since Moscow began its “special military operation” in Kyiv.&nbsp;

China’s role in the conflict

China had garnered criticism for its stance on the Russian invasion of Ukraine particularly as the conflict had crossed its one-year mark. This came as Beijing had and still refuses to criticise Moscow but opted for what might be viewed as a neutral stance as it continues to urge that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations be upheld. In late February, the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said American intelligence suggests China is considering supplying military aid to Moscow.&nbsp;

In an interview with NBC, Blinken also said that China is “trying to have it both ways,” where “publicly, they present themselves as a country striving for peace in Ukraine, but privately, as I said, we’ve seen already over these past months the provision of non-lethal assistance that does go directly to aiding and abetting Russia’s war effort.”

However, the claim was quickly dismissed while China accused the US of “fanning flames and stoking confrontations” as it continues to provide Ukraine with defensive weapons. In response, China’s top diplomat Wang Yi had also said, Beijing would “never accept finger-pointing and even coercion and pressure on China-Russia relations.”&nbsp;

A week or so later, on the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Beijing released a 12-point peace plan in a foreign ministry paper. In the peace plan the ministry had stated, “All parties must stay rational and exercise restraint, avoid fanning the flames and aggravating tensions, and prevent the crisis from deteriorating further or even spiralling out of control.”&nbsp;

It added, “Dialogue and negotiation are the only viable solution to the Ukraine crisis” and that China would play a “constructive role,” without mentioning what that would entail. Notably, China has refrained from condemning Russia for its actions or referring to its “special military operation” as an invasion but has criticised Western sanctions imposed against Moscow.&nbsp;

Why would China want to mediate?

China had also garnered criticism from the West about supposedly defending Moscow and not doing enough to address the issues around it. Analysts, as per Reuters say that this would be Beijing’s way of deflecting some of that backlash and even if they cannot achieve a quick breakthrough it is a low-cost venture which can yield high returns for China.&nbsp;

Additionally, China also recently mediated talks between Iran and Saudi Arabia and struck a peace deal where the two countries have now decided to re-establish relations after seven years of hostility which had previously threatened the stability and security in the Gulf.&nbsp;

“This is a victory for dialogue, a victory for peace, offering major good news at a time of much turbulence in the world”, China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi had said at the time. Notably, the deal was seen as a landmark diplomatic win for China in a region where the geopolitical scenario had previously been dominated by the US.&nbsp;

Wang also said that China as a “good-faith and reliable mediator” has “faithfully fulfilled its duties as the host”. He added, Beijing will continue to play a constructive role in handling hotspot issues of the world and demonstrate its responsibility as a major nation and that the world is not just limited to the “Ukraine issue”.&nbsp;

As per Reuters, analysts have said that under Xi’s stewardship, Beijing is attempting to project itself as a responsible power where the Chinese president “would want to be seen on the global stage as a statesman whose influence at least equals that of the US leader,” said Wang Jiangyu, a law professor at the City University of Hong Kong.&nbsp;

Will China be an ‘honest broker’?

Last year, weeks before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Xi had hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing for the Winter Olympics where the two countries had issued a joint statement committing to their “no limits” friendship.&nbsp;

Therefore, since China proposed its peace deal it has been met with deep scepticism given its “no-limits” friendship with Moscow, many have questioned if it can be an honest broker between Russia and Ukraine. After the 12-point plan was released, charge d’affaires at the Ukrainian embassy in Beijing, Zhanna Leshchynska, said that it was a “good sign” but questioned China’s neutrality.&nbsp;

“If it is neutrality, then China should talk to both sides, Russia and Ukraine. Now we see the Chinese side mostly talking with Russia, but not Ukraine,” said Zhanna. She added that Kyiv will not agree to anything which keeps “Ukrainian territories occupied” and “puts our people at the aggressor’s mercy”.&nbsp;

Similarly, an international security expert Li Mingjiang dismissed the proposal as China’s “attempt at public relations”. He added, “I'm not convinced that this policy is going to improve their credibility in being an honest broker.”&nbsp;

It is also worth noting that since the conflict began Beijing has called for peace but at the same time backed the Russian position of NATO being a threat to Moscow with its eastward expansion. Meanwhile, it has also accused the West of fanning the flames of the conflict by supplying Ukraine with military aid.&nbsp;

In this context, some have also called on Beijing to clarify its stance, “China feels it necessary to repeat its self-perceived neutrality at this juncture, to save some international inference by not only criticising NATO but also distinguishing itself from Russia’s behaviour,” said Shi Yinhong, a professor of international relations at Beijing’s Renmin University, as per Sky News.&nbsp;

“China doesn't have much credibility because they have not been able to condemn the illegal invasion of Ukraine,” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said last month after the deal was announced. While China may not have “credibility” as an honest broker, experts believe that it is in a better position to mediate than Turkey as it holds some leverage over both Russia and Ukraine. &nbsp;

Currently, China can be viewed as Russia’s most important ally as not only has it been buying oil from Moscow it also provided a market for its goods after they were sanctioned by Western countries. On the other hand, a Russia expert at Oxford University, Samuel Ramani also spoke about Beijing’s leverage over Ukraine which includes not losing their chances of Chinese support for its reconstruction, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

Additionally, after Russia had annexed Crimea in 2014, Beijing increased trade with Ukraine and did not recognise the annexed territory as Russian, said Ramani. He added, “Most importantly, Zelensky does not want to provoke China so much that they start arming Russia”.&nbsp;

In response, China’s top diplomat Wang Yi had also said, Beijing would “never accept finger-pointing and even coercion and pressure on China-Russia relations.” A week or so later, on the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Beijing released a 12-point peace plan in a foreign ministry paper. Why would China want to mediate? China had also garnered criticism from the West about supposedly defending Moscow and not doing enough to address the issues around it. Analysts, as per Reuters say that this would be Beijing’s way of deflecting some of that backlash and even if they cannot achieve a quick breakthrough it is a low-cost venture which can yield high returns for China. Additionally, China also recently mediated talks between Iran and Saudi Arabia and struck a peace deal where the two countries have now decided to re-establish relations after seven years of hostility which had previously threatened the stability and security in the Gulf. Notably, the deal was seen as a landmark diplomatic win for China in a region where the geopolitical scenario had previously been dominated by the US. Wang also said that China as a “good-faith and reliable mediator” has “faithfully fulfilled its duties as the host”. He added, Beijing will continue to play a constructive role in handling hotspot issues of the world and demonstrate its responsibility as a major nation and that the world is not just limited to the “Ukraine issue”. In this context, some have also called on Beijing to clarify its stance, “China feels it necessary to repeat its self-perceived neutrality at this juncture, to save some international inference by not only criticising NATO but also distinguishing itself from Russia’s behaviour,” said Shi Yinhong, a professor of international relations at Beijing’s Renmin University, as per Sky News. Currently, China can be viewed as Russia’s most important ally as not only has it been buying oil from Moscow it also provided a market for its goods after they were sanctioned by Western countries. On the other hand, a Russia expert at Oxford University, Samuel Ramani also spoke about Beijing’s leverage over Ukraine which includes not losing their chances of Chinese support for its reconstruction, reported Reuters. China urges Ukraine and Russia to restart peace talks 'as soon as possible'

Russia vowed to 'destroy' the dozens of Soviet-era MiG-29 fighter jets that Poland and Slovakia have pledged to send to Ukraine in the coming days. The Kremlin said the fighter jets would be 'destroyed' before insisting that the deployment of Western arms - including warplanes and tanks - would not change the course of the war. Slovakia also approved a plan to send its fleet of 13 MiG-29s to Ukraine.

A Chinese-made commercial drone said to be weaponised, called Mugin-5, was shot down by the Ukrainian military in the eastern part of the country over the weekend.

The wreckage of the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) — made by a Chinese manufacturer based in the eastern port city of Xiamen — was found near the city of Sloviansk, eastern Ukraine.

Known as the “Alibaba drones”, tech bloggers say they are available for sale for up to $15,000 on Chinese marketplace websites, including Alibaba and Taobao.

Mugin Limited, the company which manufactures the drone, confirmed that it belongs to them, and called the incident “deeply unfortunate”.

Though it is unclear whether it was used for snooping but reports alleged that it had no camera. CNN claimed that the drone was retrofitted with 20 kg&nbsp;bomb, which was later detonated by Ukrainian soldiers.

This incident marks the latest example of a civilian drone being retrofitted and weaponised since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, indicating the rapidly shifting patterns of warfare.

The incident was reported overnight Friday into Saturday, when the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) were alerted by their agents based in Russian-held territory of a UAV being launched from there and heading towards a Ukrainian target, according to CNN.

The SBU then contacted the military units in eastern Ukraine, near the city of Sloviansk. Around 2 am on Saturday, the fighters from the 111th Brigade of the Territorial Defence Forces of Ukraine heard the drone&nbsp;and&nbsp;saw a faint light from the aircraft.

“From the sound, from the signal light, the troops fired a lot at it and knocked down the UAV,” Maksim, a 35-year-old territorial defence fighter, told CNN.

He said that the UAV was flying at a very low altitude and it was drought down using AK-47 automatic weapons.

"This particular drone that we’ve been looking at would be much more effective if it had a decent camera in it. This seems to be a very crude, unsophisticated, not very technologically&nbsp;advanced way of conducting operations,” Chris Lincoln-Jones, a specialist in drone warfare, was quoted as saying by CNN.

This comes after the US has previously accused Russia of an “unsafe” and “unprofessional” intercept of its MQ-9 Reaper surveillance drone which eventually crashed in the Black Sea on Tuesday.&nbsp;

The Russian military has said that they scrambled the air defence unit jets after detecting the US drone but has denied causing the crash and said that the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) had lost control, a claim the US disputed. While repeating its version of the events, the Russian ministry announced the awards on Friday.&nbsp;

“As a result of sharp manoeuvring around 9:30 am (Moscow time), the MQ-9 unmanned aerial vehicle went into uncontrolled flight with a loss of altitude and collided with the water surface,” said the Russian military in a statement, as per Reuters.&nbsp;

The defence minister Shoigu presented the awards to the two Su-27 pilots for “preventing” the US drone from “violating” international airspace restrictions placed by Moscow amid what it describes as its “special military operation” in Ukraine, reported The Moscow Times.&nbsp;

The statement added, “The drone flew with its transponders off, violating the boundaries of the area of the temporary airspace usage regime established for the special military operation (and) communicated to all users of international airspace.”&nbsp;

The US military, which also released a 42-second video on Thursday of the incident said that the drone was on a routine mission when it was intercepted over the Black Sea in international airspace. It also alleged that the fighter jets dumped fuel on the drone during the encounter that lasted 30-40 minutes before one of MQ-9 Reaper drone’s&nbsp;propellers got damaged and it crashed into the sea.&nbsp;

Taking to Twitter, Prime Minister Heger said, "Slovak government just approved sending 13 MiG-29s to Ukraine! Promises must be kept and when Zelensky asked for more weapons, including fighter jets, I said we'll do our best. Glad others are doing the same. Military aid is to ensure that Ukraine can defend itself and the entire Europe against Russia."

Addressing a press conference, Heger also said that his government would deliver a Kub air defence system to Ukraine, the news agency AFP reported.&nbsp;

Speaking to reporters, Polish President Andrzej Duda said, "In the coming days we will first transfer, if I remember correctly, four fully operational planes to Ukraine." Duda added that Poland currently has a dozen or so MiG planes that it inherited from the German Democratic Republic, which they are on the verge of sending to Ukraine.&nbsp;

"These MiGs are still in service in Poland's air force. They're in their last years of operation but are still for the most part in full working order," the president said. Reacting to Poland's decision, a Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson told the news agency that Kyiv was "grateful to our partners." 
 
"MiGs will not solve the tasks, we need F-16s. But MiGs will help to strengthen our capabilities indeed," air force spokesman Yuriy Ignat said.

Since the beginning of the Russian offensive in February last year, Ukraine has repeatedly asked its Western allies to send warplanes — although seeking primarily modern US-made F-16s — but so far no Western countries had committed to giving jets to Kyiv.

On Thursday, the US said it was informed about Poland's decision to send warplanes to the war-torn country. However, the White House said that Warsaw's move does not change Washington's decision against sending its warplanes to Ukraine.&nbsp;

"It doesn't change our calculus with regards to F16s," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters on Thursday.&nbsp;

The Kremlin on Friday reacted to Poland and Slovak's decision to send warplanes to Ukraine. The Kremlin said that such fighter jets would be destroyed, and reiterated that Western arms deliveries to Kyiv would not change Moscow's military aims.

"The supply of this military equipment -- as we have repeatedly said -- will not change the outcome of the special military operation... Of course, all this equipment will be destroyed," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said during a press conference.&nbsp;
