Canada to send Leopard-2 tanks to bolster NATO in Latvia

Is Ukraine's counter-offensive failing? US officials say Kyiv is facing a very 'tough fight' & might end up paying a 'high cost'. Who are these officials? Mohammad Saleh reports.

Gravitas: Has Russia blunted Ukraine's counteroffensive with NATO weapons?

<p>President Vladimir Putin delivered a keynote address at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum, highlighting positive macroeconomic trends in the Russian economy and expressing doubt about the sustainability of Ukraine's military operations suggesting that Kyiv heavily relies on external sources for equipment and fighting capabilities. During his speech, Putin also revealed that Russia has successfully transported its initial batch of tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus. This move comes as part of a previously announced plan, which has raised concerns and increased tensions with the United States and its allies in relation to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.</p>

<p>Putin said, "The first nuclear charges were delivered to the territory of Belarus. But only the first. This is the first part. But by the end of the summer, by the end of the year, we will complete this work."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Regarding Ukraine's counteroffensive, President Putin commented that Ukrainian forces did not achieve their objectives in any of the sectors they targeted. Russia to award bonuses to soldiers who destroy Western tanks

Western states are far from implementation of plans to ship US-made F-16 planes to Ukraine, and a lot of work is yet to be done for that, US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley said.

In the current counteroffensive, Ukraine claims that Russian forces that had been occupying areas of Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia are being driven out. However, Russia has not confirmed this, and Moscow claims that the Ukrainian army have sustained significant losses. On the other hand, the Ukrainian military asserts that it has retaken control of more than 100 square kilometres of the area, and Cave reports that Ukrainian forces have advanced in crucial frontline areas.

<p>"War has no winners" is an adage that has been espoused since time immemorial to describe the futility of it. One saw it unfold on camera when a Russian soldier, left alone on the battlefield after his whole unit was decimated, pleaded desperately to the Ukrainian side or in this case, a drone, to spare him.&nbsp;</p>

<p>30-year-old Ruslan Anitin was one of the sole survivors after his platoon, stationed near the eastern city of Bakhmut was killed by Ukrainian drone and mortar attacks recently.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The drone footage has now emerged, showing Anitin haphazardly standing up without his rifle and gesturing towards the drone and asking pilots to spare his life if he surrendered.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I thought I would end up staying in that trench forever,” Anitin was quoted as saying by The Washington Post.</p>

<p>The Ukrainian drone pilots were suspicious initially, fearing it was another trap by the Russian soldiers. However, after monitoring Anitin's body language, they started conversing by moving the drone up and down for yes, left and right for no.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>I felt sorry for him: Ukrainian drone operator</strong></h2>

<p>An assault drone was nearby to complete the kill but the drone's pilot, whose call sign is Boxer, decided to spare the life of his enemy.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Despite that he is an enemy, even though he has killed our boys, I still felt sorry for him,” said Boxer.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Boxer used a Sharpie marker to write in Russian on the packaging of his food rations: “Surrender follow the drone" and dropped it in front of the soldier. Anitin quickly jumped, grabbed the paper and started following the instructions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Once Anitin agreed, he was guided for over an hour through the trenches with discarded grenades, rifles and lifeless bodies of Russian soldiers lying in them. During the trek, he came perilously close to a couple of grenade blasts, allegedly conducted by his own side.&nbsp;</p>

"War has no winners" is an adage that has been espoused since time immemorial to describe the futility of it. One saw it unfold on camera when a Russian soldier, left alone on the battlefield after his whole unit was decimated, pleaded desperately to the Ukrainian side or in this case, a drone, to spare him. 30-year-old Ruslan Anitin was one of the sole survivors after his platoon, stationed near the eastern city of Bakhmut was killed by Ukrainian drone and mortar attacks recently. The drone footage has now emerged, showing Anitin haphazardly standing up without his rifle and gesturing towards the drone and asking pilots to spare his life if he surrendered. “I thought I would end up staying in that trench forever,” Anitin was quoted as saying by The Washington Post. The Ukrainian drone pilots were suspicious initially, fearing it was another trap by the Russian soldiers. However, after monitoring Anitin's body language, they started conversing by moving the drone up and down for yes, left and right for no. "Despite that he is an enemy, even though he has killed our boys, I still felt sorry for him,” said Boxer. Boxer used a Sharpie marker to write in Russian on the packaging of his food rations: “Surrender follow the drone" and dropped it in front of the soldier. Anitin quickly jumped, grabbed the paper and started following the instructions. Once Anitin agreed, he was guided for over an hour through the trenches with discarded grenades, rifles and lifeless bodies of Russian soldiers lying in them. During the trek, he came perilously close to a couple of grenade blasts, allegedly conducted by his own side. (Disclaimer: Video may be distressing for some. He was later pinned to the ground by the Ukrainian soldiers who loaded him into a truck. The Russian was later sent to the Kharkiv region while the Ukraine side captured the trench where Anitin had been stationed, a week later. On the 27th of May, Moscow launched the Kondor FKA radar surveillance satellite. And according to the Russian military department, this high-resolution satellite will be used entirely for military purposes. And will scan the entire territory of Ukraine, twice a day for military installations. What this means is that Ukraine will have no place to hide the western weapons that are being pumped into the battlefield. Weather phenomena such as rain, thunder and clouds will not affect the radar capabilities of this satellite. And what is worse, the undisclosed weapons caches that Ukraine presently has at this moment will be exposed. But how good are these Russian surveillance satellites? And can they really change the course of this war? Mohammed Saleh gets you the details

<p>Russia has issued yet another warning regarding the Black Sea grain deal. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov on Thursday said the country has seen no positive prospects when it came to the deal as certain parts of the deal affecting Russia, remained unfulfilled.&nbsp;</p>

The extension of the grain deal was a goodwill gesture. Russia has repeatedly made such gestures," said Peskov during a regular press briefing.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"But unfortunately, in the absence of reciprocity, the lack of desire on the part of the collective West to fulfil part of the agreements concerning Russia, this manifestation of goodwill and political will cannot be endless. That is why our exit from the deal after its expiry is being considered. But there is no decision yet," he added.</p>

<p>Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the West had 'cheated' Moscow by failing to deliver on promises that might allow Russian agricultural exports to enter the world markets once again.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The United Nations nuclear energy chief, on Tuesday (June 13), visited the Ukrainian capital city of Kyiv and met with President Volodymyr Zelensky before going to Ukraine’s Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant days after&nbsp;the massive Kakhovka<em>&nbsp;</em>dam on the Dnipro River was breached.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Rafael Grossi also said that he is “very concerned” that the nuclear plant could be caught in Ukraine’s long-awaited counteroffensive which aims to retake Russian-occupied territory.&nbsp; This comes as Kyiv has recently claimed gains in the early stages of its counteroffensive, earlier on Tuesday.</p>

<p>The IAEA chief also said there were no signs of Russian troops moving heavy military equipment to the&nbsp;Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP)&nbsp;but can only be confirmed after his visit and said, “There shouldn’t be any military equipment or artillery or amounts of ammunition, an amount that could compromise the security of the plant.”</p>

<p>He added, “We do not have any indication at this point, but it could not be excluded.” Grossi, addressing the press in Kyiv,&nbsp;said he discussed the dangers facing the ZNPP with Zelensky.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Grossi also said that the largest nuclear power plant in Europe is witnessing a “relatively dangerous situation” after the collapse of the Soviet-era Nova Kakhovka dam on the Dnipro River in the Russia-occupied part of southern Ukraine.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Why is Grossi in Kyiv, travelling to nuclear power plant</strong>?</h2>

<p>The IAEA chief's&nbsp;trip to Ukraine comes after the UN agency, on Sunday, said that it needed to access the site near the plant to check the water levels after the dam’s reservoir which also provided water essential for cooling the six reactors at the ZNPP collapsed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The nuclear power plant which has repeatedly been caught in the crossfire between Russia and Ukraine once again sparked concerns after the destruction of the Kakhovka dam. Meanwhile, both Kyiv and Moscow have blamed each for attacking the dam which led to dozens of deaths and prompted evacuation&nbsp;of thousands of people in southern Ukraine amid floods.&nbsp;</p>

The water in the cooling pond is used to keep the ZNPP’s six reactors from potentially disastrous overheating from the reservoir which is now destroyed. However, Ukraine’s nuclear energy company, Energoatom, on Tuesday said that the level of the pond was stable and that the water was enough.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>‘Serious situation’ at ZNPP: IAEA chie</strong>f</h2>

<p>Speaking to journalists in Kyiv, Grossi said there was no immediate danger but that it was a “serious situation” due to the limited amount of water left. According to the Ukrainian energy company, as of Tuesday morning, the water level was at 16.67 metres which it said is “quite enough to meet the needs of the station”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Grossi has also called the move a “step in the wrong direction.” He added, “If there was a break in the gates that contain this water or anything like this, you would really lose all your cooling capacity.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Similarly, Ukrainian nuclear authorities have also said that the reservoir which was normally used to refill the pond cannot anymore because of its falling water level.
