There have been numerous clues and finger-pointing in the most recent revelations over the past eight months since the most recent stream gas pipeline blast, and the mystery has not yet been solved. German investigators have now discovered a Polish connection to the underwater explosion on September 26, 2018, a series of deep sea explosions at the bottom of the Baltic Sea, and the north stream gas pipelines months after the covert bombings.

The West may have imposed massive sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine recently, but a report claims that business is lavishly conducted in Moscow. This raises doubts about the West's obligations to the beleaguered Kyiv government.

Report: Several West-based operating profitably in Russia

The White House said on Friday (June 9) that Russia appeared to deepen its defence cooperation with Iran and this had resulted in it getting hundreds of Iranian drones which it was using to strike Ukraine.

The White House cited newly declassified information. It said that the Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) built in Iran were being shipped across the Caspian Sea and were then being used by Russia against Ukraine.

"Russia has been using Iranian UAVs in recent weeks to strike Kyiv and terrorize the Ukrainian population, and the Russia-Iran military partnership appears to be deepening," White House spokesman John Kirby said in a statement.

"We are also concerned that Russia is working with Iran to produce Iranian UAVs from inside Russia."

Kirby said that the US was in possession of information that Russia was receiving materials from Iran which was required to build a drone manufacturing plant. This plant, said Kirby could be fully operational early next year.

"We are releasing satellite imagery of the planned location of this UAV manufacturing plant in Russia’s Alabuga Special Economic Zone," he said.

The US has previously sanctioned Iranian executives at a defence manufacturer over drone supplies to Russia. Iran has acknowledged sending drones to Russia but said in the past they were sent before Russia's February invasion. Moscow has denied its forces used Iranian drones in Ukraine. A White House official said Iran had transferred several hundred drones to Russia since August.

Kirby said that support between Iran and Russia was both ways. Iran is seeking billions of dollars worth of military equipment from Russia. This includes helicopters and radars.

"Russia has been offering Iran unprecedented defense cooperation, including on missiles, electronics, and air defense," he said.

"This is a full-scale defense partnership that is harmful to Ukraine, to Iran’s neighbors, and to the international community. We are continuing to use all the tools at our disposal to expose and disrupt these activities including by sharing this with the public – and we are prepared to do more."

Violation of UN rules

Kirby said that drone transfer constituted violation of United Nations rules. He added that the US would seek to hold Russia and Iran accountable.

In addition to the US, countries like Britain, France, Germany and Ukraine say that supply of Iran-made drones to Russia violates a 2015 U.N. Security Council resolution enshrining the Iran nuclear deal.

Under the 2015 U.N. resolution, a conventional arms embargo on Iran was in place until October 2020.

Russia and Ukraine are struggling to contain the effects of one of the biggest humanitarian crises unleashed due to the war, the breach of the key Ukrainian Dam. It has triggered a massive flood downstream. At least seven people have already died in the flood affected areas and the political blame game is on more in our next report.

Ukraine damn breach: Dam collapse is an ecological catastrophe

Hundreds of people were evacuated from settlements along the southern stretch of Ukraine's Dnipro River on Tuesday after water burst through the breached Nova Kakhovka dam, submerging streets, and town squares. Looking downstream, Russia controls the left bank of the Dnipro and the dam itself, and Ukraine holds the right bank. Each side has blamed the other for causing the damage that triggered the latest crisis in the conflict. Water has been used as a weapon in the war for a long. Is the same strategy at play in Ukraine? Watch to know more in this interview with Professor Charles A Kupchan from Georgetown university.

Toxic wildfire smoke from Canada has impacted millions of people in North America, with people being alerted about the health risks of poor air quality. The North American skies have been shrouded with orange-tinged smog caused by the wildfires. The smog has obscured the famous skyscrapers in the region and forced the residents to wear face masks. The cities along the US East Coast have also issued air quality alerts. On the other hand, Ukraine is grappling with a devastating flood crisis as the destruction of the Kakhovka dam has caused severe flooding in southern areas.

In the recording, one of the men, identified by the SBU as a Russian soldier, stated, "They [the Ukrainians] didn't strike it. That was our sabotage group. They wanted to, like, scare [people] with that dam. It didn't go according to plan, and [they did] more than what they planned for."

Military experts have opined that Ukraine's long-awaited counter-offensive will focus on Zaporizhzhia. Their analysis suggests that Kyiv aims to regain access to the Sea of Azov, thereby dividing the occupying Russian forces in the region into two separate groups. This strategic move would not only weaken Russia's combat capability but also eliminate a land bridge to Crimea, which was forcefully annexed by Russia in 2014.
