Ukraine's much-awaited counter-offensive has apparently begun but Russia claims to have thwarted it for now. Ukraine claims gain around Bakhmut | Russia-Ukraine war

Volodymyr Zelensky has praised Ukrainian troops for advances claimed near the devastated city of Bakhmut. On the other hand, Russia says it repelled a large-scale attack. The contrasting claims come at a time as Pope Francis's peace envoy arrived in Kyiv for two days of talks. Remember, in May, Russia said it seized the now-destroyed eastern Ukrainian city, the scene of the longest and one of the bloodiest battles of the war.

Hundreds of people were evacuated from settlements along the southern stretch of Ukraine's Dnipro River on Tuesday after water burst through the breached Nova Kakhovka dam, submerging streets, and town squares. Looking downstream, Russia controls the left bank of the Dnipro and the dam itself, and Ukraine holds the right bank. Each side has blamed the other for causing the damage that triggered the latest crisis in the conflict. Water has been used as a weapon in the war for a long. Is the same strategy at play in Ukraine?

European Union reacts to Ukraine dam blast, condemns Russia for 'taking aggression to new level'

The nature of the Ukraine war has undergone some dramatic changes. As part of its strategy to fight back , Ukraine is doing the one thing that the West had been squeamish about. There has been a spate of cross-border, ground and drone attacks deep inside the Russian territory. Ukraine appears to be implementing the old adage: that the best defense is a good offense. So how successful has Kyiv been in pushing back the Russian forces? And how is Russia planning to blunt the Ukrainian counteroffensive, with the use of Western weapons? Mohammed Saleh explores.

As per some sources linked to US intelligence quoted by CNN, Ukraine is working on arming its "agents and sympathisers" inside Russia with drones to undertake sabotage operations against the Russian establishment. The sources also attributed the recent drone attack on the Kremlin to these agents, who launched the drones from inside Russia rather than flying them from Ukrainian territory far away.

Several other drone attacks have taken place in Russia over the last few days, including one on a residential neighbourhood near Moscow and another on an oil refinery in southern Russia. However, it was not clear whether those strikes were carried out by Ukrainian agents operating within Russian territory.

The sources quoted by CNN also clarified that drones used by Ukraine's agents in Russia were manufactured by Ukraine itself, and no US-made drone was used to stage attacks inside Russia. As per the sources, Ukrainian forces have established well-practised smuggling routes beyond the Russian border to send drone components to its operatives in Russia, where they assemble drones and carry out strikes on Russian targets.

The Russian district of Shebekino, which is located in the western Belgorod on the Ukraine border, has been facing daily shelling which has killed many civilians and forced villagers to flee from the region. The region's governor Vyacheslav Gladkov appealed to residents to co-operate with the government authorities and evacuate the district. "I ask that in the villages of, first of all, the Shebekino district that has been shelled, to listen to the position of authorities and leave — temporarily leave — their homes," Gladkov said on Telegram. He added that their goal was "to safeguard what is most important: your life and the lives of your close ones". He added that the district went through another "not calm night" with "a lot of damage".
