An auto garage in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv has emerged as a surprise source of battlefield resources for the resistance forces during the ongoing conflict with Russia. The shop, which mainly specialised in repairs before the Russian invasion of Ukraine started in 2022, is transforming old cars, trucks and busses into military vehicles which are capable of transporting drones and weapons.

"We are not a wealthy country, and the state cannot provide all our soldiers with armoured four-wheel vehicles, so pickups are a compromise," an Ukrainian volunteer called Anton Senenko told AFP.

"Very often, there are breakdowns with cars in peacetime. But in wartime, such a breakdown can lead to a tragedy," he said when asked about the reason behind his initiative.

The vehicles being used by the garage are mainly donated or fundraised by the Ukrainian volunteers involved in the initiative. According to AFP, there were also a number of cars and other vehicles which were imported from other countries including Estonia, Poland and Latvia.

"We don't just change lubricants and filters, we fully prepare the entire machine for the harsh conditions in which it will work on the front line," Senenko said.

Ukrainian defence minister Oleksii Reznikov claimed that Russia is planning a new mobilisation order amid the ongoing Ukraine war. The minister also said that Moscow could close its borders to men within a week. If it happens, it will be the second official mobilisation after Russia started the invasion of its neighbouring nation on February 24 in 2022. After almost seven months into the war, Russia had in September declared a partial mobilisation of military reservists. In a video address on Friday, Reznikov warned Russians who might qualify for mobilisation. "I know for a fact that you have about one week left before you still have any choice," he said. "In early January, the Russian authorities will close the borders to men, declare martial law, and begin another wave of mobilisation. Borders will also be closed in Belarus," he added. Reznikov especially mentioned that the mobilisation would target people, particularly in big cities. Kryrylo Budanov, who is the head of Ukraine's intelligence directorate told the BBC on Friday that Russia’s new mobilisation order would start on 5 January. Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered that more than 300,000 men will be conscripted into the Russian army. However, in a public acknowledgement, Putin said that the "partial mobilisation" maybe had not gone as smoothly as it was claimed. He also called for the mistakes to be "corrected". Russian troops that are part of the mobilisation drive in Ukraine will now be entitled to get their sperm frozen for free in cryobanks, according to the Russian Union of Lawyers.

Trunov said the ministry determined the possibility of financial support from the federal budget for free conservation and storage of germ cells (spermatozoa) for citizens mobilised to participate in the special military operation (in Ukraine) for 2022-2024.

The health ministry has not yet commented on Trunov's remarks, a report by the BBC on Wednesday said. Russia in September had announced a partial mobilisation. Over 250,000 men fled Russia to avoid the draft.

The report said that within days of the call-up, the Fontanka website in St Petersburg reported a rise in men going to IVF and fertility clinics to have their sperm frozen and draw up documents entitling their wives to use it.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday that he held a telephone conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sought the implementation of the "peace formula" to end the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Zelensky thanked India for the humanitarian aid and support in the United Nations. On his official Twitter account, Zelensky said that during his chat with PM Modi, he wished for a successful G20 (Group of Twenty) presidency. The Ukrainian president said that on the G20 platform he had announced the "peace formula" and now he counts on India's participation in its implementation. In the official statement by the Indian government, it was mentioned that PM Modi explained the main priorities of India's G20 Presidency, including giving a voice to the concerns of developing nations on issues like food and energy security. I had a phone call with @PMOIndia Narendra Modi and wished a successful #G20 presidency. Ukraine's president speaks to Indian PM Modi over phone, seeks help with 'peace formula'

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday (December 23) that the Russian defence industry has to up its game so that the Russian army gets all it needs to fight in Ukraine. Putin was speaking in Tula, a centre for arms manufacturing.

"The most important key task of our military-industrial complex is to provide our units and frontline forces with everything they need: weapons, equipment, ammunition, and gear in the necessary quantities and of the right quality in the shortest possible timeframes," said Putin.

"It's also important to perfect and significantly improve the technical characteristics of weapons and equipment for our fighters based on the combat experience we have gained."

Putin said this week that the Russian army had to learn from and fix the problems it had suffered from in Ukraine, promising to give it whatever it needed for the war that's nearing the end of its 10th month.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24 this year. After sustained gains in the initial months of the conflict, Russian forces suffered battlefield defeats in light of Ukrainian counterattacks.

Putin has projected the Ukraine war as Russia's pushback against what he terms excessive Western influence in world affairs.

Putin has conceded that a mobilisation campaign to add around 300,000 troops did not go to plan and has ordered shortfalls, which have sometimes included a lack of basic equipment and training, to be urgently addressed.

Russia still controls a significant chunk of Ukraine however, and Putin has said that Moscow will prevail despite fierce Ukrainian resistance and Kyiv receiving billions of dollars of Western weapons along with military intelligence and other help.

Usually, Ukraine celebrates Christmas every January 7 as do Russian citizens. However, amid Moscow's intensifying offensive which has entered the 11th month, some Orthodox Ukrainians are celebrating Christmas on December 25, like many Christians across the globe do. Back in October, the leadership of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine had agreed to allow the faithful to celebrate the festival on December 25, a report by news agency Associated Press said on Sunday (December 25). For some Ukrainians, changing the dates represented a separation from Russia, its culture and religion. “What began on February 24, the full-scale invasion, is an awakening and an understanding that we can no longer be part of the Russian world,” Olena Paliy, a resident from Bobrytsya city, told the Associated Press. ALSO READ| At the heart of Ukraine, a Christmas tree in a hideout In Bobrytsya, some members of the faith promoted the change in date within the local church and when a vote was taken last week, 200 out of 204 people voted in favour of adopting the Christmas date as December 25. The local church in the city had recently transitioned to being a part of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, with no ties to Russia. A local official in Bobrytsya- Roman Ivanenko- said the change in date was a big step as never in Ukraine's history, it had the same dates for the celebration of Christmas with the whole Christian world. Ukrainians break tradition to sever Russia ties, celebrate Christmas on Dec 25 instead of Jan 7. Here's why

Ten months into the ongoing armed conflict with Russia, Ukraine remains defiant. In a message on Saturday, the war-torn nation's President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukrainians will show the Russian aggressors that they remain unbowed despite the relentless attacks that have plunged millions into darkness, and that they will create their own Christmas magic.

On the day that marked 10 months of Moscow's launching of the war that has killed tens and thousands and displaced millions, Zelensky said, "We endured at the beginning of the war - we withstood attacks, threats, nuclear blackmail, terror, missile strikes. We will endure this winter because we know what we are fighting for."

'Guarantee security': Finland tells Russia after incident at embassy in Moscow

At least five people were killed and 35 others were injured on Saturday (December 24) by a Russian missile strike in the Ukrainian city of Kherson, according to presidential aide Kyrylo Tymoshenko. Of those injured, 16 were heavily wounded, Tymoshenko said, according to a report by Reuters.

Taking to Telegram, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack and shared pictures of the shelling. "Social networks will most likely mark these photos as 'sensitive content'. Russia had occupied Kherson shortly after it began its special military operation in Ukraine in February this year. In November, Ukrainian forces recaptured the city in a significant military defeat for Moscow.

However, Kherson has been struck by Russian forces multiple times.

Saturday's attack comes more than a week after two people, including a Red Cross worker, were killed in Russian shelling in the city on December 15. Regional governor Yaroslav Yanushevych said the attack left Kherson completely without power. President Zelensky had said that Moscow bombed the city more than 16 times on this day.

More than 11,000 people have left Kherson since it was recaptured in November and most of them had been evacuated by the government, according to the ministry that was responsible for reintegrating the city. During Russia's control, regional officials estimated that 100,000 residents were in Kherson, AFP reported last week.

Five killed, 35 injured in Russian shelling in Kherson; Zelensky terms it ‘killing for pleasure’

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday (December 22) spoke of ending the Ukraine war. He hinted that this would inevitably involve a diplomatic solution. Putin's words have come a day after US President Joe Biden hosted Ukrainian President Voldymyr Zelensky in the White House. Ukraine is soon to get more help from the US as Ukrainian troops fight against the Russians.

"Our goal is not to spin the flywheel of military conflict, but, on the contrary, to end this war," Putin said. "We will strive for an end to this, and the sooner the better, of course."

"I have said many times: the intensification of hostilities leads to unjustified losses," Putin told reporters.

"All armed conflicts end one way or another with some kind of negotiations on the diplomatic track," he added. "Sooner or later, any parties in a state of conflict sit down and make an agreement. The sooner this realization comes to those who oppose us, the better. We have never given up on this."

Weapons supply to Ukraine from the US will aggravate war, Kremlin warns

Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Belarus on Monday (December 19) to discuss the key aspects of the further development of the strategic partnership and alliance between both nations. Russian defence and foreign ministers also accompanied Putin during his rare visit to the ex-Soviet ally.

Putin's visit came on the same day when Russia reportedly launched a "kamikaze" drone attack in Ukraine. Moscow targeted key infrastructure in and around Kyiv which caused emergency blackouts in a dozen regions.

Kremlin's statement mentioned that the focus of Putin's visit is on the integration within the Union State, as well as current issues on the international and regional agenda.

The Russian state television showed Putin disembarking a plane at an airport in Minsk. He was greeted by his close ally Lukashenko ahead of bilateral talks.

Some Western experts have raised concerns that Putin will urge Belarus to join the fresh ground offensive against Ukraine. If it happened, it will open a new front for Kyiv in the ongoing war, which started on February 24.

But Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied all the reports and termed them "totally stupid, groundless fabrications."

As translated by the news agency Reuters, Putin said, "I want to note that last year, in 2021, we saw a very good jump forward in our trade and economy. Our trade turnover, and I want to stress this, even before all the different events connected to the "special military operation", before that, in 2021, rose by a third and reached $38.5 billion. Putin's rare visit to Belarus: Lukashenko urges unity with Russia in 'difficult times'

After Russia launched one of its biggest missile attacks since the start of the Ukraine war, Ukraine's national energy provider Ukrenergo on Friday (December 16) warned citizens that it may take longer to restore electricity and power cuts may get longer. Russian missiles battered Ukrainian power grid yet again. This worsened already dire conditions for Ukrainians and provoked accusations of "war crimes" from the European Union.

The strikes knocked out water and electricity services in several regions in a country already enduring near freezing temperatures.

"Priority will be given to critical infrastructure: hospitals, water supply facilities, heat supply facilities, sewage treatment plants," Ukrenergo said in a statement Friday.

Ukraine warns citizens of longer power cuts after fresh Russian battering

The next significant phase in the ongoing Ukraine war could be any West-backed attempt to change the status of Russia-occupied Crimea as it could lead to a seismic shift in regional geopolitics.

An official from US President Joe Biden's administration recently told members of the Congress that Ukraine has the military capability to take back Crimea—a peninsula which was annexed by Russia in 2014 after a referendum that Ukraine and the West never recognised.

But as reported by NBC News on December 16, two US officials familiar with the matter stated that concerns were raised over any attempt of a large-scale offensive to take back Crimea, as it could push Russian President Vladimir Putin to use nuclear weapons.

The report mentioned that during the Ukraine briefing to some members of the Congress in late November, a discussion around the need for more weapons deliveries also happened.

On being asked about America's continued support for the Ukrainian military and whether or not Ukraine would try to retake Crimea, the Biden official said that Ukraine now has the ability to take it back.

According to the experts, there is no probability of the Ukrainian offensive in Crimea at this crucial juncture. Some experts are also of the opinion that the way the Russia-Ukraine war is progressing now, this doesn't seem imminent.

As quoted by the report, a US official said that the Ukrainians "continue to shock the world with how well they’re performing on the battlefield."

The US official also said the same thing about Crimea, but he did say that Ukraine has shown resilience and perseverance throughout the war.

Earlier in the month, Kremlin said that it was vulnerable to Ukrainian attacks on the Crimean peninsula after the Russian military downed a drone near its largest city.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov had told reporters that "there are certain risks because the Ukrainian side continues its policy of organising terrorist attacks. But, on the other hand, the information we get indicates that effective countermeasures are being taken".

Has Ukraine attacked Russian forces in Crimea?

Moscow claimed that Ukraine attempted to target Russian forces in Crimea. But there's no confirmation.

Some known attacks on Russian troops since July include a drone strike that hit Russia’s Black Sea fleet in Sevastopol. There were also reports of explosions at a suspected Russian ammunition dump.

In October, the Kerch bridge in eastern Crimea, which connects it to mainland Russia, was partially destroyed in an attack attributed to Ukraine by Moscow, but Kyiv denied it.

Some Ukrainian officials reportedly celebrated the incident. The bridge is a showcase project of Putin's rule.

WATCH | Ukraine forces shelled Russia-controlled Donetsk, Russian officials × On being asked about America's continued support for the Ukrainian military and whether or not Ukraine would try to retake Crimea, the Biden official said that Ukraine now has the ability to take it back. According to the experts, there is no probability of the Ukrainian offensive in Crimea at this crucial juncture. Some experts are also of the opinion that the way the Russia-Ukraine war is progressing now, this doesn't seem imminent. As quoted by the report, a US official said that the Ukrainians "continue to shock the world with how well they’re performing on the battlefield." The US official also said the same thing about Crimea, but he did say that Ukraine has shown resilience and perseverance throughout the war. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community.
