Britain on Tuesday said it would push back its implementation of full post-Brexit&nbsp;borders checks on goods from the European Union, as the pandemic, red tape and new immigration rules fuel supply problems.

Plans to introduce full controls in areas such as the import of food and animal products had been due from next month but would now start from January next year under a "pragmatic new timetable", the government said.

Britain will still introduce full customs declarations and controls on January 1, 2022, as planned.

Certification and physical checks on food and animal goods designed to protect against diseases, pests and contaminants — due to be introduced on January 1 — will now be introduced in July 2022.

Requirements for safety and security declarations will be also be pushed back to July.

"We want businesses to focus on their recovery from the pandemic rather than have to deal with new requirements at the border, which is why we've set out a pragmatic new timetable for introducing full border controls," said minister David Frost.

"Businesses will now have more time to prepare for these controls which will be phased in throughout 2022.

"We remain on track to deliver new systems, infrastructure and resourcing needed for these controls," he added.

The pandemic and&nbsp;Brexit&nbsp;have left Britain short of some 90,000 truck drivers, many of whom returned to eastern Europe, causing supply chain problems, particularly in the food and drink sector.

The UK has similarly postponed the full implementation of post-Brexit&nbsp;rules governing trade from mainland Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales) to Northern Ireland.

London is in talks with Brussels about how to put into practice the Northern Ireland Protocol, which is designed to prevent unchecked goods heading into the EU single market via the UK's only land border with the EU to Ireland.

But on Monday night, Frost warned ministers could unilaterally suspend the protocol unless progress is made, with opposition strong from pro-British parties in Northern Ireland.

That, however, could trigger countermeasures from the EU, which insists the protocol is not up for renegotiation.

Employers group the CBI said the extra time would "relieve pressure in supply chains ahead of the traditionally busy Christmas period for retailers".

But the industry body's Europe director, Sean McGuire, said progress was still needed to eradicate most checks, particularly for agri-foods.

"And where supply bottlenecks are caused by labour shortages, the UK should use the immigration levers within its gift to alleviate short-term pressures," he added.

Britain is set for the strongest growth since official records began over 2021, with gross domestic product (GDP) set to expand by 7.1 percent, according to the British Chambers of Commerce.

But it said the acute driver shortage, global supply issues and recruitment troubles could hamper the recovery.

An alarming study published on Saturday has revealed that up to 660,000 jobs will be at serious risk if the UK continues to fall behind other countries in the amount it invests in green infrastructure and jobs.

Coming just two months before Boris Johnson’s government hosts the United Nations Climate Conference, the report highlights that the impact on employment in the UK as a result of jobs moving “offshore” to countries in the vanguard of green investment and technology will be particularly acute in the UK’s industrial heartlands, Yorkshire and the Humber.

In separate research, it was found out that the UK is second from bottom in the league table of G7 economies for its record in investment in green investment and jobs.

This comes in despite Johnson’s claims to be a leading force in the race to save the planet from global warming.

According to reports, Google underpaid thousands of international contract workers, violating pay-parity laws in several countries and delayed correcting the pay rates for more than two years as it attempted to cover up the problem.

The tech giant’s compliance department discovered that it had been underpaying workers in UK, Europe and Asia since May 2019, but chose not to immediately compensate the underpaid temporary staff.

Instead, they only corrected rates for new employees in the hopes of avoiding legal, financial, and reputational damage, the Guardian reported citing access to internal Google documents and emails.

According to the New York Times, Alan Barry, a Google manager based in Ireland, feared that the dramatic pay increase would cause employees to “connect the dots” and "give rise to a flurry of noise/frustration."

“Nevertheless, it’s clear that this process has not been handled consistent with the high standards to which we hold ourselves as a company. We’re doing a thorough review, and we’re committed to identifying and addressing any pay discrepancies that the team has not already addressed.

“And we’ll be conducting a review of our compliance practices in this area. In short, we’re going to figure out what went wrong here, why it happened, and we’re going to make it right.”

According to The Guardian, Google employs over 900 temporary workers throughout the UK, Ireland, India, Germany, the Netherlands, France, and Poland - all of which enforce local pay-parity laws.

Meanwhile, a whistleblower represented by Whistleblower Aid has filed a complaint about the alleged violations with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

People across the UK will have more choice over when to start a family with plans to increase the storage limits for eggs, sperm and embryos, the UK government announced on Monday.

Following a public consultation earlier this year, proposals will be introduced in Parliament to increase the statutory storage limits for everyone from the current 10 years, to a 10-year renewable storage period up to a maximum of 55 years.

Under the new system, prospective parents will be given the option at 10-year intervals to keep or dispose frozen eggs, sperm and embryos.

UK Health Secretary Sajid Javid said the move marks a "huge step forwards" for giving people greater freedom over their fertility and for equality, as the same rules will apply to everyone and storage limits will not be dictated by medical need.

"The current storage arrangements can be severely restrictive for those making the important decision about when to start a family, and this new legislation will help turn off the ticking clock in the back of people's minds," said Javid.

"There are any number of reasons why someone may choose to preserve their fertility, and it is one of the most personal decisions any of us can make. Technological breakthroughs including in egg freezing ? have changed the equation in recent years and it's only right that this progress puts more power into the hands of potential parents," he said.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said the changes follow evidence that shows frozen eggs can be stored indefinitely without deterioration, due to a new freezing technique called vitrification, and changes reflect the increasing success of using frozen embryos in routine IVF treatment.

The government move follows a growing trend among people in the UK starting families later in life, in pursuit of career goals and other considerations.

Raj Mathur, the Indian-origin Chair of the British Fertility Society (BFA), welcomed the changes and said it ensures that the new rules are compliant with the scientific evidence about the safety of storage, and protects the ability of all patients to make reproductive choices for themselves as individuals and couples. 
"Technological advances mean that storage of reproductive material is a safe and effective way of protecting fertility for many individuals," said Mathur.

"As professionals delivering care in this field, we are delighted that our advocacy has resulted in a change for the better for our patients, reducing unintended discrimination and protecting autonomy," he said.

It said the charity will work with the UK's Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) to ensure clinics are supported to implement this change.

"We welcome the government's plans to extend the storage limit for frozen eggs, sperm and embryos, bringing the law in line with advances in science, changes in modern society and individuals' reproductive choices," said HFEA Chair Julia Chain.

"This is great news for patients, giving them more time to make important decisions about family planning. Any decision to store or preserve eggs, sperm or embryos is a serious one and anyone considering this must be given full information on the procedures involved, including the best time to freeze and likelihood of successfully using them to have a baby in future,? she said.

"It is important that the new rules are clear and that fertility clinics are given adequate time to update their procedures to ensure they can both implement the changes effectively and give patients sufficient information so that they are fully informed about their options," she added.

The DHSC has said that it would be inappropriate for the limit to apply to all cases so there will be additional conditions around third party donors and posthumous use. This process is to be consulted upon separately.

The legislation for the broader change in the law will be tabled in Parliament in the coming months.

"People across the UK are starting families later in life and it is increasingly commonplace for people to choose to freeze their eggs, sperm and embryos to preserve fertility. In what can be said to be further and stronger criticism of USA's hasty retreat from Afghanistan, British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace suggested that US was no longer a superpower. The price of some&nbsp;dog&nbsp;breeds has increased by as much as 89 percent since several lockdown periods in Britain, as interest in owning a&nbsp;pet&nbsp;surged, according to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

This is blamed for making&nbsp;dog&nbsp;theft more appealing to criminals, with evidence suggesting police received around 2,000 reports of canines being stolen last year.

The task force, comprising government officials as well as police, prosecutors and other law enforcement agencies, considered evidence from academics, animal welfare organisations and various experts.

In its report released Friday, it also recommended keeping reliable data on&nbsp;pet&nbsp;thefts to "build a stronger evidence base about the problem" and improving ownership records.

New requirements to register additional&nbsp;pet&nbsp;details and a single point of access to around 16 microchipping databases would support tracking lost and stolen dogs, the taskforce said.

Meanwhile it urged raising awareness about police initiatives and prevention measures targeted at the issue.

"Pet&nbsp;owners shouldn't have to live in fear, and I am pleased this report acknowledges the unique distress caused by this crime," Environment Secretary George Eustice said in a statement.

"Its recommendations will reassure&nbsp;pet&nbsp;owners, help the police to tackle&nbsp;pet&nbsp;theft, and deliver justice for victims," he added, vowing ministers would start implementing them.

The new&nbsp;pet&nbsp;abduction&nbsp;offence will be created through new legislation, with reports it could be included in a policing and crime bill currently going through parliament.

Chris Sherwood, chief executive of the RSPCA charity, welcomed the proposals to acknowledge the "seriousness" of&nbsp;pet&nbsp;thefts and "utter turmoil" they can cause.

"We hope this will encourage courts to hand out much tougher sentences to&nbsp;pet&nbsp;thieves," he said.
