Historic demand: Church of England clergy seek pay raise after 500 years

UK on Monday began implementing a preferential trading scheme with 65 poor and developing countries in a bid to boost the country's trade. UK's international trade minister Nigel Huddleston launched the developing countries trading scheme (DCTS). He said that this scheme will remove or reduce tariffs and simplifies trading rules.

UK MPs overwhelmingly back report slamming Boris Johnson for ‘partygate’

<p>Conservative Party aides in the United Kingdom were invited for a “Jingle and Mingle” event during the 2020 COVID-19-induced lockdown, as per an invitation seen by BBC, reported on Monday (June 18). This came a day after Mirror news outlet released a 45-second video which purportedly shows Tory staff drinking and dancing as they appear to joke about “bending” Covid lockdown rules in December 2020.</p>

UK: Tory members were called for ‘Jingle and Mingle’ party during Covid lockdown, shows invitation

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and UK's foreign secretary James Cleverly held a joint press conference in London to discuss the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Both leaders discussed the rallying international support to help Ukraine recover from the severe impact of the Russian invasion.

<p>Hundreds of media groups across the world have alleged that Britain's Conservative Party is undermining press freedom by charging fees to journalists who would come to cover their annual conference. PM Rishi Sunak's party first imposed a fee for media accreditation at its conference last year. The party had faced complaints from media organisations in the UK and in foreign countries at the time.</p>

<p>This year the Conservative Party conference is going to take place in the month of October in Manchester in northwest England. The party has imposed a 137-pound (USD 175) charge. It will rise to 880 pounds from August 1. The Conservative Party insists that the money helps cover the administrative costs of "thousands" of journalists who fail to show up.</p>

<p>The Foreign Press Association of UK-based overseas media said the Conservative Party had failed to give any evidence of journalists skipping the event on such a scale. The association has argued that wider principles were at stake.</p>

<p>"In fact, this decision sets a dangerous precedent for countries all over the world who will use this decision to justify financial and other barriers to media scrutiny of the political process," it said.</p>

<p>"We, therefore, call upon the Tory party conference organisers to scrap or refund the charges and allow fair and free reporting for all."</p>

Media accuses UK Tories of stifling press freedom over conference charges

In a letter to the prime minister, a cross-party group of British MPs and peers has urged him to rethink his decision to permit a top Chinese government official to visit this week. This person is accused of organising the forcible repatriation of hundreds of dissidents, including some from the UK. The leader of the Communist Party of China central committee's foreign division, Liu Jianchao, is scheduled to address the Chatham House think tank and meet with UK lawmakers.

<p>Police in the United Kingdom have recorded a 59 per cent increase in crimes of sadistic nature against swans, ducks and geese in two years between 2020 and 2022. The crimes include the decapitation of these waterfowl, to their being killed using&nbsp;fireworks and BB guns in ponds. The information has been acquired by The Guardian under freedom of information laws.</p>

<p>The report by the news outlet mentions how the birds were killed across the country.</p>

<h2><strong>Gruesome incidents</strong></h2>

<p>Police in Avon and Somerset found the remains of two swans in a blood-filled tub. In Dorset, a decapitated swan was found with an arrow in its body.</p>

<p>In Devon and Cornwall, three separate incidents of swans being decapitated were recorded. There was also a goose that had a stable door slammed and bolted on its neck.</p>

<p>In London, three more swans were reportedly found with their heads chopped off. &nbsp;</p>

<p>In Cumbria, a man was arrested for lifting a swan up by its neck and throwing it at someone.</p>

<p>In Merseyside, police were alerted about youths who reportedly shot fireworks into a duck pond.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the village of Yatton, a large number of ducks were found tied and drowned.</p>

<p>There were 62 crimes against ducks, swans and geese between 2020 and 2022.</p>

<p>In 2022, there were 27 crimes against these birds. The number was up from 18 in 2021 and 17 in 2020. Half of the nationwide crimes took place in Essex, Merseyside, Devon and Cornwall.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981 protects the waterfowl and it is illegal to injure or kill them or destroy their nests and eggs. Those convicted of the crime can face six months imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine.</p>

<p>“We say we’re a nation of animal lovers and yet every year we see wild animals in our wildlife centres and animal hospitals that have been badly injured or killed after being shot with a gun or catapult for ‘fun’ – or beaten, mutilated or poisoned," said a spokesperson for &nbsp;Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals as quoted by The Guardian.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Sadly, we suspect what we are seeing is just the tip of the iceberg, and there may be many more deliberately injured wild animals out there, which are never found and which die a drawn-out, painful death.</p>

<p>“There is no place for cruelty to animals in today’s society and we urge anyone who spots suspicious activity when out and about or sees anything online to consult the RSPCA website for advice, or to speak to Crimestoppers or their local police force.”</p>

Police in the United Kingdom have recorded a 59 per cent increase in crimes of sadistic nature against swans, ducks and geese in two years between 2020 and 2022.

Police in the United Kingdom have recorded a 59 per cent increase in crimes of sadistic nature against swans, ducks and geese in two years between 2020 and 2022. The crimes include the decapitation of these waterfowl, to their being killed using fireworks and BB guns in ponds. The information has been acquired by The Guardian under freedom of information laws. The report by the news outlet mentions how the birds were killed across the country. Gruesome incidents Police in Avon and Somerset found the remains of two swans in a blood-filled tub. In Dorset, a decapitated swan was found with an arrow in its body. In Devon and Cornwall, three separate incidents of swans being decapitated were recorded. There was also a goose that had a stable door slammed and bolted on its neck. In London, three more swans were reportedly found with their heads chopped off. In Cumbria, a man was arrested for lifting a swan up by its neck and throwing it at someone. In Merseyside, police were alerted about youths who reportedly shot fireworks into a duck pond. In the village of Yatton, a large number of ducks were found tied and drowned. There were 62 crimes against ducks, swans and geese between 2020 and 2022. In 2022, there were 27 crimes against these birds. The number was up from 18 in 2021 and 17 in 2020. Half of the nationwide crimes took place in Essex, Merseyside, Devon and Cornwall. The Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981 protects the waterfowl and it is illegal to injure or kill them or destroy their nests and eggs. Those convicted of the crime can face six months imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine. “We say we’re a nation of animal lovers and yet every year we see wild animals in our wildlife centres and animal hospitals that have been badly injured or killed after being shot with a gun or catapult for ‘fun’ – or beaten, mutilated or poisoned," said a spokesperson for Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals as quoted by The Guardian. “Sadly, we suspect what we are seeing is just the tip of the iceberg, and there may be many more deliberately injured wild animals out there, which are never found and which die a drawn-out, painful death. “There is no place for cruelty to animals in today’s society and we urge anyone who spots suspicious activity when out and about or sees anything online to consult the RSPCA website for advice, or to speak to Crimestoppers or their local police force.” You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. War-torn Ukraine is seeking up to $40 billion to fund the first part of a 'Green Marshall Plan' to rebuild its economy. A two-day meet, co-hosted by Ukraine and UK, begins in London on Wednesday. Politicians and financiers will discuss the country's short-term funding issues as well as look at long-term reconstruction efforts. The World Bank estimates Ukraine's reconstruction will cost $411 billion, three times the country's gross domestic product.

MPs will decide later today whether or not to support a report that claims Boris Johnson purposefully deceived Parliament about lockdown parties in Downing Street. Boris Johnson was accused on Friday of a new breach for taking a newspaper columnist job without waiting for required ethics vetting. Remember, the former British prime minister quit parliament last week over a finding that he misled lawmakers about covid lockdown parties. The Tories are divided over whether to endorse the findings of a panel of lawmakers that he deliberately misled parliament over parties at his office during the pandemic. Johnson started his working life in journalism, sacked by the Times newspaper for making up a quote. He went on to have a career at the daily telegraph, whereas a Brussels correspondent, he lambasted the EU in vivid, if not always accurate prose. He later pursued parallel media and political careers as editor of the Spectator magazine and as a member of parliament. Before becoming prime minister, he wrote a column for the daily telegraph. That column often saw him criticized for his views, and he was accused of islamophobia.

Ex-UK police watchdog chief charged with rape of teen girl, indecent assault

<p>A UK parliamentary committee has released a report stating that former prime minister Boris Johnson intentionally deceived lawmakers regarding his knowledge of numerous parties that violated lockdown restrictions at his office and government buildings during the COVID-19 pandemic.</p>

<p>The committee, consisting of seven members from both the Conservative Party and opposition parties, was established in April 2022 to investigate Johnson's actions during the "Partygate" scandal, which involved unauthorised gatherings attended by Johnson and his staff. The findings of the committee ultimately contributed to Boris Johnson's downfall.</p>

<h2><strong>Here are the key findings from the report</strong></h2>

<h2><strong>1. Investigation&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>The committee's main objective was to examine Johnson's statements to the House of Commons regarding gatherings at Downing Street between 2020 and 2021. They assessed whether any misleading statements were genuine errors or intentional and reckless acts, as well as whether corrective actions were taken promptly.</p>

<p>The committee emphasised that this investigation was of significant importance, as misleading the House of Commons is a matter that strikes at the core of democracy.</p>

<h2><strong>2. Details of the gatherings</strong></h2>

<p>The report provided evidence of six gatherings held in government buildings, contrary to the strict social distancing rules that Johnson himself had been advocating for on television.</p>

<p>These events included farewell parties for staff and a Christmas drinks event. Johnson was present at some of these gatherings, including one in May 2020 where alcohol was provided, and over 200 people were invited. <p>“We came to the view that some of Mr Johnson’s denials and explanations were so disingenuous that they were by their very nature deliberate attempts to mislead the Committee and the House, while others demonstrated deliberation because of the frequency with which he closed his mind to the truth,” the report said, adding, “We conclude that Mr Johnson’s conduct was deliberate and that he has committed a serious contempt of the House."</p>

A UK parliamentary committee has released a report stating that former prime minister Boris Johnson intentionally deceived lawmakers regarding his knowledge of numerous parties that violated lockdown restrictions at his office and government buildings during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A UK parliamentary committee has released a report stating that former prime minister Boris Johnson intentionally deceived lawmakers regarding his knowledge of numerous parties that violated lockdown restrictions at his office and government buildings during the COVID-19 pandemic. The committee, consisting of seven members from both the Conservative Party and opposition parties, was established in April 2022 to investigate Johnson's actions during the "Partygate" scandal, which involved unauthorised gatherings attended by Johnson and his staff. The findings of the committee ultimately contributed to Boris Johnson's downfall. Here are the key findings from the report 1. Investigation The committee's main objective was to examine Johnson's statements to the House of Commons regarding gatherings at Downing Street between 2020 and 2021. They assessed whether any misleading statements were genuine errors or intentional and reckless acts, as well as whether corrective actions were taken promptly. Also Read | Ex-Harvard Medical School morgue manager indicted for stealing, selling human remains The committee emphasised that this investigation was of significant importance, as misleading the House of Commons is a matter that strikes at the core of democracy. 2. Details of the gatherings The report provided evidence of six gatherings held in government buildings, contrary to the strict social distancing rules that Johnson himself had been advocating for on television. Also Read | New Zealand's biggest meth bust with drug hidden in maple syrup bottles, six arrested These events included farewell parties for staff and a Christmas drinks event. Johnson was present at some of these gatherings, including one in May 2020 where alcohol was provided, and over 200 people were invited. Another event took place in June 2020 in the Cabinet Room to celebrate Johnson's birthday, with at least 17 other attendees present. Johnson and others were later fined by the police. 3. Johnson's statements on these events Johnson repeatedly assured parliament that all COVID-19 rules and guidelines were followed at Downing Street and claimed to have relied on advisors' repeated assurances that no rules were broken. He argued that the gatherings were essential for work purposes, specifically to boost staff morale. 4. Committee's conclusions The committee concluded that as the leading promoter of the government's COVID-19 rules and guidance, Johnson was fully aware of what was not permitted at the time and had knowledge of rule breaches at Downing Street.
