There are numerous issues and problems under this TVK government, and they are resorting to diversionary tactics to shift public attention away from them," Udhayanidhi said.</p><h2>Udhayanidhi attacks TVK government over arrest</h2><p>His remarks came a day after police arrested him following a complaint filed by a ruling TVK functionary, who accused him of making misogynist remarks during a public meeting in Thanjavur.</p><p>Police took Udhayanidhi to Thanjavur by road and questioned him for nearly 90 minutes at the Sengipatti police station. He was later released on station bail in line with a Madras High Court direction.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>After his release, Udhayanidhi rejected the allegations and said he had never intended to insult women.</p><p>"I did not speak with any wrong intentions. I had no intention of speaking about women in a derogatory manner. I did not mean to demean women. We should thank the Finance Minister for acknowledging that Tamil Nadu ranks number one in many sectors. However, this government has merely pasted the name 'Vetri ', which is also the name of their party onto existing schemes. We had announced a scheme to distribute 20 lakh laptops, of which 10 lakh had already been distributed," he said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>He alleged that the government had only renamed existing welfare programmes instead of introducing new initiatives.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>"They have simply renamed it the Vetri Laptop Scheme. <p>DMK party cadres and leaders want Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin's son Udhayanidhi to be elevated as deputy CM, a move which will be a "huge advantage" for the party in the 2026 assembly elections, a senior party leader said on Thursday (Jul 18).</p>

<p>DMK Organising Secretary RS Bharathi, however, made it clear that the party president and CM Stalin will take the final call on the matter.</p>

<p>Bharathi's comments come amidst reports about the possible elevation of Udhayanidhi ahead of Stalin's proposed US visit next month.</p>

<p>Udhayanidhi was made Minister of Youth Welfare and Sports Development in his father’s Cabinet in December 2022, a year after he won from the Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni Assembly constituency. He had played a crucial role in the 2021 Assembly election which ended the decade of AIADMK rule in the state.</p>

<p>His poll campaign displaying a brick to signify that the Centre had not initiated any work on the AIIMS project that was promised for Madurai, had a big impact in bolstering the party’s winning prospects at the hustings. He had also campaigned effectively for the party in the 2024 Lok Saba election.</p>

<p>“Chief Minister MK Stalin has to decide on the elevation of Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin as Deputy CM. This will definitely be announced when it happens,” Bharathi said when asked about reports on Udhayanidhi being anointed as deputy to Stalin.</p>

<p>Party cadres and leaders including seniors like him want Udhayanidhi to become the Deputy CM, he said and added “this is our aspiration too.”</p>

<p>“But it is ultimately the CM who as the party president should decide,” Bharathi told PTI.</p>

<p>The row over Sanatana Dharma remark reached the Supreme Court on Friday (Sept 22) after it issued notices to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin's son and DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin.</p>

<p>The young scion had stirred up a massive controversy after he called for the eradication of Sanatana Dharma, another name for Hindu religion, to bring social justice during a public rally on September 2.</p>

<p>His remarks were widely condemned by Hindu religious groups and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, even as the opposition bloc, which the DMK is part of, struggled to come clean on the issue. Several cases were also registered against the Tamil Nadu politician.</p>

<h2><strong>SC seeks response&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>On Friday, the apex court issued notices to the Tamil Nadu government, Udhayanidhi Stalin, and 12 others, and sought their response.</p>

<p>The court’s order came in response to a plea filed by Chennai-based lawyer Jagannath urging that Stalin and other leaders be barred from making further statements about 'Sanatana Dharma', and the declaration at the September 2 conference in Tamil Nadu as unconstitutional.</p>

<p>The petition argued that the conference had a deliberate agenda to target Hinduism and propagate hatred by employing offensive and derogatory language.</p>

<p>While hearing the matter, the SC bench, comprising Justices Aniruddha Bose and Bela M Trivedi, questioned the petitioner why he didn’t approach the Madras High Court first.</p>

<p>To this the lawyer of the petitioner argued that if an individual had made these remarks, they would have approached the lower court, but “a minister and state machinery being unleashed against a particular religion."</p>

<p>Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday denounced DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin over his remarks while addressing a gathering in poll-bound Rajasthan.</p>

<p>"For the last two days, the INDIA alliance has been insulting 'Sanatana Dharma'. Leaders of DMK and Congress are talking about ending 'Sanatana Dharma' just for vote bank politics. This is not the first time they have insulted our 'Sanatana Dharma," he said.</p>

<p>"Today, the Congress party says that if Modi ji will win, Sanatana will rule. Rahul Gandhi said that the Hindu organisations are more dangerous than Lashkar-e-Taiba," he added.</p>
