<p>Twitter on Sunday suspended the account of Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) chief Khadim Rizvi, following a request by the Imran Khan-led government to take action against his tweets inciting violence during the protests against the verdict of Asiya Bibi case.</p>

<p>On visiting his handle, a notification appears on the screen which reads - "Account Suspended".</p>

<p>The step was taken after Rizvi and his TLP supporters had urged people to resort to violence in the aftermath of the verdict last week. The TLP chief also criticised several state institutions by writing inflammatory statements as claimed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government, The Express Tribune reported.</p>

<p>Earlier, Pakistan's Information and Broadcasting Minister Fawad Chaudhry had said that the social networking giant turned down the PTI government's request to pull down Rizvi's account.</p>

<p>On Saturday, Rizvi and senior TLP leader Afzal Qadri were among the 500 people booked for rioting and disrupting normal life in various parts of Lahore. Two cases were also booked against protestors in the nation's capital Islamabad on charges of vandalising public property.</p>

<p>On October 31, mass protests began after the Pakistan Supreme Court announced its verdict acquitting Asiya, a Christian woman in a blasphemy case. The demonstrations, led by TLP and other religious parties, blocked roads and vandalised public property in various parts of the country.</p>

<p>A three-judge special bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar, Justice Asif Saeed Khosa and Justice Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel heard Asiya's 2014 appeal against her conviction and death sentence and overturned the ruling in favour of her.</p>

<p>Even after rejecting reports of putting Asiya on the Exit Control List (ECL), the PTI government succumbed to pressure and reached an agreement with the TLP for taking legal actions to not allow Asiya and her family to leave the country.</p>

<p>Asiya was convicted and sentenced to death in 2010 for allegedly insulting Islam during an argument with three Muslim women.</p>

<p>Twitter Inc deleted more than 10,000 automated accounts posting messages that discouraged people from voting in Tuesday's US&nbsp;election and wrongly appeared to be from Democrats, after the party flagged the misleading tweets to the social media company.</p>

<p>"We took action on relevant accounts and activity on Twitter," a Twitter spokesman said in an email. The removals took place in late September and early October.</p>

<p>Twitter removed more than 10,000 accounts, according to three sources familiar with the Democrats' effort. The number is modest, considering that Twitter has previously deleted millions of accounts it determined were responsible for spreading misinformation in the 2016 US&nbsp;presidential election.</p>

<p>Yet the removals represent an early win for a fledgling effort by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, or DCCC, a party group that supports Democrats running for the US&nbsp;House of Representatives.</p>

<p>The DCCC launched the effort this year in response to the party's inability to respond to millions of accounts on Twitter and other social media platforms that spread negative and false information about Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and other party candidates in 2016, three people familiar with the operation told Reuters.</p>

<p>While the prevalence of misinformation campaigns have so far been modest in the run-up to the Congressional elections on November&nbsp;6, Democrats are hoping the flagging operation will help them react quickly if there is a flurry of such messages in the coming days.</p>

<p>The Tweets included ones that discouraged Democratic men from voting, saying that would drown out the voice of women, according to two of the sources familiar with the flagging operation.</p>

<p>The DCCC developed its own system for identifying and reporting malicious automated accounts on social media, according to the three party sources.</p>

<p>The system was built in part from publicly available tools known as "Hoaxley" and "Botometer" developed by University of Indiana computer researchers. They allow a user to identify automated accounts, also known as bots, and analyse how they spread information on specific topics.</p>

<p>"We made Hoaxley and Botometer free for anyone to use because people deserve to know what’s a bot and what’s not," said Filippo Menczer, professor of informatics and computer science at the University of Indiana.</p>

<p>The Democratic National Committee works with a group of contractors and partners to rapidly identify misinformation campaigns.</p>

<p>They include RoBhat Labs, a firm whose website says it has developed technology capable of detecting bots and identifying political-bias in messages.</p>

<p>The collaboration with RoBhat has already led to the discovery of malicious accounts and posts, which were referred to social media companies and other campaign officials, DNC Chief Technology Officer Raffi Krikorian said in email.</p>

<p>Krikorian did not say whether the flagged posts were ultimately removed by Twitter.</p>

<p>"We provide the DNC with reports about what we’re seeing in terms of bot activity and where it’s being amplified," said Ash Bhat, co-founder of RoBhat Labs.</p>

<p>"We can’t tell you who’s behind these different operations, Twitter hides that from us, but with the technology you known when and how it’s happening," Bhat said.</p>

<p>US President Donald Trump complained Friday that Twitter is removing some of his followers and has made it harder to join, an apparent critique of the social network's efforts to weed out fake and abusive accounts.</p>

<p>Trump, who has some 55 million Twitter followers, revived his argument about "bias" by internet firms in a morning tweet that suggested growth in his network was slowing.</p>

<p>Trump's remarks appeared aimed at Twitter's efforts to weed out fake and "spam" accounts to improve the health and safety of the platform.</p>

<p>For months, Twitter has sought to eliminate automated and bogus accounts designed to manipulate the public conversation on Twitter, in response to concerns over Russian interference in the 2016 election.</p>

<p>Twitter said this week the number of active users fell by nine million in the past quarter as a result of these efforts.</p>

<p>Authorities found two more suspicious packages on Friday addressed to US Senator Cory Booker and James Clapper, the former US director of national intelligence, amid a manhunt for the person who sent bombs to prominent Democrats and critics of Trump.</p>

<p>The 11th package was found at a mail sorting facility in Florida and was addressed to Booker, the Democratic senator from New Jersey, the FBI said on Twitter. A 12th package was addressed to James Clapper, the former director of national intelligence, and sent to CNN, the cable network reported.</p>

<p>Authorities called the parcel bombs an act of terrorism. They were sent less than two weeks before national elections that could alter the balance of power in Washington.</p>

<p>No one has claimed responsibility for the bombs so far, and the public was asked to report any tips.</p>

<p>Twitter Inc easily beat Wall Street's revenue and profit estimates on Thursday, pushing its shares up 11 per cent before the opening bell, as higher ad sales offset a drop in monthly users as the site removed accounts suspected of abuse.</p>

<p>Quarterly advertising revenue jumped 29 per cent to $650 million from a year earlier, boosted by ad sales on broadcasts from media companies including Live Nation Entertainment, Major League Baseball and Major League Soccer.</p>

<p>That contributed to a similar jump in overall revenue from a year earlier to $758 million, beating analysts' average estimate of $702.6 million, according to Refinitiv data. The company reported adjusted profit of 21 cents per share, well above the average estimate of 14 cents.</p>

<p>The company played down a larger-than-expected decline in monthly active users, saying it was focusing on removing accounts used for disinformation, hate speech and other abuse to solidify a base of high-quality users who are attractive to advertisers.</p>

<p>Twitter has deleted millions of suspicious accounts after it and other social media services were used in misinformation campaigns attempting influence voters in the 2016 U.S. presidential race and other elections. Last week it disclosed it had removed some 10 million tweets that it thought were the work of Russian and Iranian government-backed influence operations.</p>

<p>Twitter said in a conference call on Thursday that the cleanup effort, which it launched in March and calls a "health" initiative, will allow it to grow revenue faster than users for a sustained period.</p>

<p>"Health ultimately is a growth factor for the service, and we do believe that's important not just for the overall experience, but in terms of making Twitter long-term enduring as well," Chief Executive Jack Dorsey said during the call.</p>

<p>Monthly active users fell to 326 million in the third quarter, below the average analyst forecast of 331.5 million, according to FactSet. Twitter said it expects them to fall below 326 million in the current quarter, missing the average forecast of 333.4 million.</p>

<p>While Twitter shares tumbled 19 per cent after a similar decline last quarter, the company's better-than-expected third-quarter revenue and profit eased worries.</p>

<p>"If they are getting rid of bots, fake accounts and fighting hate speech, then it's actually good for the health of the platform overall,” said Pivotal Research Group analyst Brian Wieser. "That is certainly more appealing to advertisers."</p>

<p>Those concerns have been somewhat offset by increases in advertising sales from video which suggest the company is succeeding in efforts to generate more cash from each user and investors have been looking for solid evidence that it would lead to sustainable growth in revenue and profits.</p>

<p>“Twitter continues to ‘do a lot with a little.’ User growth is lackluster, but the company is eking out more from current users," said Jim Cridlin, global head of innovation at WPP's Mindshare media buying agency.</p>

<p>Distribution deals with US&nbsp;Major League Baseball, video game publisher Activision, Sony Music and Vice are starting to lure advertisers to Twitter’s live premium video, he said.</p>

<p>Internet major Google and social media giants Twitter and Facebook have assured the Election Commission that they will not allow their platforms to be used for anything which effects the purity of polls during campaign period, Chief Election Commissioner O P Rawat has said.</p>

<p>Italy will refuse to let a humanitarian ship carrying more than 600 migrants dock at its ports and has asked the Mediterranean island of Malta to open its doors to the vessel, government officials said on Sunday.</p>

<p>Malta brushed off the request, saying it had nothing to do with the rescue operation, opening the prospect of a diplomatic rift between the two European Union allies.</p>

<p>The move by Italy's new interior minister, Matteo Salvini, who is also head of the far-right League, represents an opening gambit to make good on his electoral promises to halt the flow of migrants into the country.</p>

<p>"Malta takes in nobody. France pushes people back at the border, Spain defends its frontier with weapons," Salvini wrote on Facebook. "From today, Italy will also start to say no to human trafficking, no to the business of illegal immigration."</p>

<p>More than 600,000 migrants have reached Italy by boat from Africa in the past five years. Numbers have dropped dramatically in recent months, but rescues have increased in recent days, presenting Salvini with his first test as minister.</p>

<p>"My aim is to guarantee a peaceful life for these youths in Africa and for our children in Italy," Salvini said, using the Twitter hashtag "We are shutting the ports".</p>

<p>However, Salvini does not have authority over the ports and it was not immediately clear if his line would hold. The mayor of Naples, who has repeatedly clashed with the League leader, said he would welcome in the humanitarian boat.</p>

<p>"Naples is ready, without funds, to save lives," he said.</p>

<p>European charity SOS Mediterranee said on Twitter earlierT on Sunday that its rescue boat Aquarius had taken on board 629 migrants, including 123 unaccompanied minors, 11 other children and seven pregnant women.</p>

<p>The charity said the group of mainly sub-Saharan Africans were picked up in six different rescue operations off the coast of Libya and included hundreds who were plucked from the sea by Italian naval units and then transferred to the Aquarius.</p>

<p>"The boat is now heading north towards a secure port," SOS Mediterranee tweeted on Sunday without specifying its destination, though virtually every such migrant boat over the past five years has ended up in Italy.</p>

<p><strong>Italian coordination</strong></p>

<p>Its route north will take it past Malta, and the Italian government said its port authorities had written to the small island state asking it to let the Aquarius dock there.</p>

<p>"The island cannot continue looking the other way when it comes to respecting international conventions," said the statement, which was signed by Salvini and Transport Minister Danilo Toninelli, who is nominally in charge of the ports.</p>

<p>Malta said the rescue operations took place in international waters off Libya and were coordinated by Italy.</p>

<p>"Malta is neither the competent nor the coordinating authority in this case. Malta will observe prevailing laws," its government said in a brief statement.</p>

<p>Charity boats operating off the Libyan coast have played an increasingly important role in rescuing migrants who often put to sea in flimsy inflatable boats not designed for the open sea.</p>

<p>The United Nations estimates that at least 500 people have died in 2018 trying to cross the central Mediterranean, following some 2,853 fatalities last year.</p>

<p>The US&nbsp;Justice Department said on Monday it would appeal against a federal judge’s ruling that President Donald Trump may not legally block Twitter users from his account on the social media platform based on their political views, according to a court filing.</p>

<p>Jameel Jaffer, a lawyer for the seven plaintiffs who sued, said the @realDonaldTrump account had unblocked the seven plaintiffs on Monday.</p>

<p>“We’re pleased that the White House unblocked our clients from the President’s Twitter account but disappointed that the government intends to appeal the district court’s thoughtful and well-supported ruling,” Jaffer said in an email.</p>

<p>The White House did not comment immediately. A Justice Department spokeswoman confirmed the plaintiffs had been unblocked.</p>

<p>Trump has made his Twitter account - with more than 52 million followers - an integral and controversial part of his presidency, using it to promote his agenda, announce policy and attack critics. He has blocked many critics from his account, which prevents them from directly responding to his tweets.</p>

<p>US&nbsp;District Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald in Manhattan ruled on May 23 that comments on the president’s account, and those of other government officials, were public forums and that blocking Twitter users for their views violated their right to free speech under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.</p>

<p>Buchwald’s ruling was in response to a First Amendment lawsuit filed against Trump in July 2017 by the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University and several Twitter users.</p>

<p>The plaintiffs include Philip Cohen, a sociology professor at the University of Maryland, and Brandon Neely, a Texas police officer.</p>

<p>Cohen, who was blocked from Trump’s account a year ago, wrote on Twitter late Monday: “We whined. We complained. We sued. We won our First Amendment lawsuit in federal court. And now @realDonaldTrump has unblocked me. Wow!”</p>

<p>Neely tweeted at Trump after he was unblocked late Monday: “@realDonaldTrump 368 days and a win in court and now I AM BACK!!!”</p>

<p>The United States'&nbspclosest allies attacked the Trump administration on Friday for imposing tariffs on steel and aluminium imports and mounted challenges with the world`s top trade body, fouling the mood at a G7 finance leaders meeting.</p>

<p>US&nbspTreasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin was the prime target of the criticism at the meeting of Group of Seven finance ministers and central bank governors in Canada, with the six other G7 member countries subject to the US&nbspmetals tariffs, which were imposed on national security grounds.</p>

<p>Their complaints also complicated US&nbspefforts to gain cooperation to challenge China's trade practices.&nbsp</p>

<p>The European Union and Canada both filed challenges with the World Trade Organization.</p>

<p>Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said in a statement that the tariffs were "imposed under a false pretext of safeguarding US&nbspnational security."&nbsp</p>

<p>Canada's finance minister, Bill Morneau, told reporters that in a meeting with Mnuchin, "I expressed in strong terms our opposition to these tariffs in the steel and aluminium sector, our absolute view that this is absurd that Canada could in any way be a security risk."</p>

<p>French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said Mnuchin was clearly isolated on the issue, though France, Germany, Japan, Britain, Italy and Canada were trying to talk the Trump administration "back to good reason."</p>

<p>"Unfortunately, we are going to have a G6 plus-one with the United States alone against everyone and running the risk of economic destabilisation," Le Maire told reporters.</p>

<p>British finance minister Philip Hammond told reporters that the US&nbspaction "worries" the G7 members, but he hoped that Friday`s discussions could lay the groundwork for G7 leaders to reach an understanding with President Donald Trump on tariffs next week at the G7 summit in Charlevoix, Quebec</p>

<p>"We know that the president has a very personal style. He likes to deal personally with issues," Hammond said.</p>

<p>Mnuchin, regarded as one of the more moderate trade voices in Trump`s cabinet, took a low profile during the G7 discussion of tariffs but was clearly "isolated," two officials participating in the talks said.</p>

<p>"He said it may need to be solved at the summit level," one of the officials said.</p>

<p>The US&nbsptariffs of 25 per cent on imports of steel and 10 percent on aluminium were imposed early on Friday on Canada, Mexico and the European Union after they refused to accept steel and aluminium quotas in negotiations with US&nbspCommerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.</p>

<p><strong>Trump's Twitter tirade</strong></p>

<p>Trump took to Twitter again on Friday to castigate Canada after his testy exchange with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday over rocky negotiations to update the North American Free Trade Agreement.</p>

<p>Trump tweeted that Canada had treated US&nbspfarmers "very poorly for a very long period of time."</p>

<p>"Highly restrictive on Trade! They must open their markets and take down their trade barriers! They report a really high surplus on trade with us," he wrote.<br />

<p>Trump's words followed swift responses to the tariffs by Canada, Mexico and the EU, which plan to retaliate with levies on billions of dollars of US&nbspgoods, including orange juice, whiskey, blue jeans and Harley-Davidson motorcycles.</p>

<p>The Harley-Davidson's stock dropped about 1 per cent on Friday, while shares of steelmakers US&nbspSteel and AK Steel both rose 2.2 per cent. The broader stock market rebounded on strong monthly jobs data.</p>

<p>Canada, the largest supplier of steel to the United States, said it will impose tariffs covering C$16.6 billion ($12.8 billion) on US&nbspimports, including whiskey, orange juice, steel, aluminum and other products.</p>

<p>Mexico announced "equivalent" measures on a wide range of US&nbspfarm and industrial products, including pork legs, apples, grapes, cheese, steel and other goods.</p>

<p>The EU plans tariffs on US&nbspexports running the gamut from canoes to "manicure or pedicure preparations."</p>

<p>"We are determined to protect the multilateral system," EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom said of the WTO challenge. "We are expecting everybody to play by the rules.</p>
