<p>Police are investigating a fire that destroyed a Rohingya Muslim settlement in New Delhi last weekend after a Twitter user claimed responsibility for setting the blaze.</p>

<p>About 40,000 Rohingya from Myanmar have settled in India in recent years after fleeing violence, persecution and poverty at home.</p>

<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has taken a tough stance on them since coming to power in 2014, calling them a security threat who should be deported.</p>

<p>The fire started early on Sunday and engulfed the shantytown, forcing its 226 residents to flee. No one was hurt but many of the Rohingya lost UN refugee documents.</p>

<p>It was the fourth fire in the settlement in six years and police said they were investigating its cause and the claim of responsibility.</p>

<p>"This is an open-ended investigation and we are looking into the Twitter matter," Chinmoy Biswal, a deputy commissioner of police, told Reuters.</p>

<p>"We are trying to find out more."</p>

<p>Delhi lawyer Prashant Bhushan on Thursday filed a complaint asking police to investigate the Twitter user who claimed responsibility for torching the houses of the "terrorists".</p>

<p>The tweet was later deleted.</p>

<p>Rohingya in India live mainly in Jammu, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi in the north, Hyderabad in the south, and Rajasthan in the west.</p>

<p>They face suspicion and resentment from many Indians at a time of simmering tension between some members of India's majority Hindu community and its Muslim minority.</p>

Police probe Twitter claim over fire at Rohingya camp in Delhi

<p>Technology companies such as Google, Microsoft and Facebook will be forced to hand over users' data to European law enforcement officials even when it is stored on servers outside the bloc, under a law proposed by the EU on Tuesday.</p>

<p>The law would allow European prosecutors to force companies to turn over data such as emails, text messages and pictures stored online in another country, within 10 days or as little as six hours in urgent cases.</p>

<p>The European Union executive says the proposed law, which would apply to data stored inside and outside the bloc, is necessary because current legal procedures between countries to obtain such electronic evidence can drag on for months.</p>

<p>"Electronic evidence is increasingly important in criminal proceedings," said European Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans.</p>

<p>"We cannot allow criminals and terrorists to exploit modern and electronic communication technologies to hide their criminal actions and evade justice."</p>

<p>Digital borders are a growing global issue in an era where big companies operate so-called cloud networks of giant data centres, which mean that an individual's data can reside anywhere.</p>

<p>Technology companies have found themselves torn between protecting consumers' privacy while cooperating with law enforcement. The political pressure has intensified after Islamist-inspired attacks across Europe in recent years.</p>

<p>The United States recently moved to address the same problem, passing a law making it clear that U. judges could issue warrants for data held abroad while giving companies an avenue to object if the request conflicts with foreign law.</p>

<p>Prosecutors and police will have to ask a judge to approve their request for electronic evidence where it concerns more sensitive data, such as the actual content of messages, emails, pictures and videos.</p>

<p>They will also be able to ask companies to ensure electronic evidence is not deleted while they prepare their so-called production order.</p>

<p>The proposal will apply only in cases where crimes carry a minimum jail sentence of three years. In cases of cyber crime there will be no minimum penalty requirement.</p>

<p>Where companies find themselves in a conflict-of-law situation because the country where data is stored forbids them from handing it over to a foreign authority, they will be able to challenge the seizure request.</p>

<p>However, such extraterritorial rules are fraught with complexity, legal and privacy experts warn.</p>

<p>In the United States, for example, certain companies are prohibited from disclosing information to foreign governments, while in Europe consumers' data privacy is strictly protected and companies are restricted in how they can transfer data outside the bloc.</p>

<p>"The Commission is proposing dangerous shortcuts to allow national authorities to obtain people's data directly from companies, basically turning them into judicial authorities," said Maryant Fernandez Perez, senior policy adviser at campaign group European Digital Rights.</p>

<p>CCIA, a tech association that includes Google and Facebook, welcomed the proposal but said it only offered a limited mechanism for addressing the risk that companies find themselves torn between two conflicting national laws.</p>

<p>"We welcome today’s proposals, which can help authorities obtain digital evidence more effectively and with more transparency and legal clarity," said Alexandre Roure, CCIA Europe's senior manager.</p>

<p>Ultimately, the Commission hopes to start talks with the United States on a deal to help law enforcement authorities to seize evidence held on each other's territories.</p>

<p>"We always think it's useful to have an EU-U.S. coordinated approach instead of a French-U.S. approach, a Belgian-U.S. approach because that leads to fragmentation," a Commission official said.</p>

<p>&nbsp;US President Donald Trump on Monday promised quick, forceful action in response to a deadly suspected chemical weapons attack in Syria, appearing to suggest a potential military response.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking at a meeting with military leaders and national security advisers, Trump said he would make a decision by Monday night "or very shortly thereafter" on a response, adding that the United States had "a lot of options militarily" on Syria.</p>

<p>“But we can’t let atrocities like we all witnessed ... we can’t let that happen in our world ... especially when we’re able to because of the power of the United States, the power of our country, we’re able to stop it.”</p>

<p>The suspected chemical weapons attack late on Saturday killed at least 60 people, with more than 1,000 injured in several sites in Douma, a city near the capital, Damascus, according to a Syrian aid organization.</p>

<p>Initial US&nbsp;assessments have so far been unable to determine conclusively what materials were used in the attack and could not say with certainty that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad`s government forces were behind it.</p>

<p>Trump said, however, that Washington was "getting more clarity" on who was responsible for the attack.</p>

<p>US&nbsp;officials told Reuters that Washington was weighing a multinational military response. For the second time in less than 24 hours, Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron spoke by phone to coordinate their response, the White House said.</p>

<p>Asked at a Cabinet meeting earlier on Monday if Russian President Vladimir Putin bore any responsibility for the attack, Trump said: "He may, yeah, he may. And if he does, it’s going to be very tough, very tough."</p>

<p>On Sunday, the US&nbsp;president who had sought warmer relations with Russia criticized Putin by name on Twitter as he castigated Russia and Iran for backing "Animal Assad."</p>

<p>The US&nbsp;envoy to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, said Washington "will respond" to the attack regardless of whether the UN&nbsp;Security Council acts or not.</p>

<p>Moscow said it warned the United States of "grave repercussions" if it carried out an attack against Syrian government forces.</p>

<p>The Syrian government and its ally Russia have denied involvement in the attack.</p>

<p>International bodies led by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) were trying to establish exactly what happened in Douma, a rebel-held town in the eastern Ghouta district.</p>

The missile strikes did little long-term damage to Syrian government forces and Assad`s position has only become stronger with Iranian and Russian support.</p>

<p>The stakes are higher for any new US&nbsp;military action, with Trump explicitly mentioning Iran and Russia in connection with the weekend attack.</p>

<p>Russia and Syria both offered during the UN&nbsp;Security Council meeting on Monday to take OPCW investigators to Douma.</p>

<p>The OPCW did not immediately respond to a request for comment. But weapons inspectors are not expected to go to Syria after being attacked twice while tying to get to the sites of chemical weapons attacks since 2013.</p>

<p>Instead, they have in recent investigations gathered blood samples from victims and interviewed witnesses outside of Syria.</p>

<p>The United States plans to call for a UN&nbsp;Security Council vote on Tuesday on a proposal for a new inquiry into responsibility for the use of chemical weapons in Syria, diplomats said.</p>

<p>Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the strike on the T-4 base was a dangerous development.</p>

Kapil Sharma goes on an abusive Twitter rant, later claims account was hacked

<p>Twitter said Thursday it has suspended over one million accounts for "promotion of terrorism" since 2015, claiming its efforts have begun to make the platform "an undesirable place" to call for violence.</p>

<p>In its latest transparency report, Twitter said it suspended 274,460 accounts between July and December 2017 "for violations related to the promotion of terrorism."</p>

<p>The figure is down 8.4 percent from the previous reporting period and is the second consecutive decline, a Twitter statement said.</p>

<p>"We continue to see the positive, significant impact of years of hard work making our site an undesirable place for those seeking to promote terrorism, resulting in this type of activity increasingly shifting away from Twitter," said the statement from the messaging platform's public policy team.</p>

<p>Twitter has faced pressure from governments around the world to crack down on jihadists and others calling for violent attacks, while at the same time maintaining an open platform for free speech.</p>

<p>In the latest six-month reporting period, Twitter said 93 percent of the suspended accounts were "flagged by internal, proprietary tools," and that 74 percent were cut off before their first tweet.</p>

<p>It said government reports of violations related to the promotion of terrorism represent less than 0.2 percent of all suspensions in the period.</p>

<p>Twitter also used the report to express concerns about what it called "legal threats to freedom of expression" online in countries around the world.</p>

<p>"With the passage of new legislation and ongoing regulatory discussions taking place around the world about the future of public discourse online, we are seeing a potential chilling effect with regards to freedom of expression," the report said.</p>

<p>It cited a Human Rights Watch report suggesting that "governments around the world (are) increasingly look to restrict online speech by forcing social media companies to act as their censors."<br />

<p>Many women cannot express themselves freely on Twitter without fear of violence or abuse, Amnesty International said on Wednesday, even though the #MeToo campaign has helped women to speak out.</p>

<p>Abuses ranged from &#39;doxing&#39; - releasing personal documents such as a person&#39;s address or children&#39;s names - to posting nude pictures, the rights group said, as it launched a campaign to get Twitter to step up its response to violations.</p>

<p>&quot;Many women are logging onto Twitter to find death threats, rape threats and racist or homophobic slurs littering their feeds,&quot; Azmina Dhrodia, a researcher with Amnesty and author of its #ToxicTwitter report, said in a statement.</p>

<p>&quot;If Twitter is allowing violence and abuse against women to flourish on the platform, the danger is that someone experiencing that will censor or silence themselves as a result,&quot; she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.</p>

<p>Twitter was not immediately available to comment. In October, however, the company pledged to toughen its rules on online sexual harassment and impose stronger penalties for misconduct.</p>

<p>The report follows an international study this month that found women politicians on Twitter were judged more harshly than their male peers on appearance and marital status and were three times more likely to receive sexist comments.</p>

<p>Amnesty said it asked Twitter in January for information on how many reports of abuse it gets, the number of reports that were in violation of Twitter&#39;s rules, and its response times.</p>

<p>It published a reply from Twitter which said the data could be &quot;misleading&quot; as some users report content that they disagreed with for political reasons in a bid to get others blocked.</p>

<p>Twitter also noted it had made dozens of changes over 16 months to improve safety, and, according to Amnesty, said it &quot;cannot delete hatred and prejudice from society&quot;.</p>

<p>Apple has reportedly blocked its app store access in Iran from Thursday afternoon.</p>

<p>What appears to be a ban, users are not able to install or uninstall any application, instead, the screen shows a message saying &#39;the App Store is unavailable in the country region you&#39;re in&#39;&nbsp;on their screen.</p>

<p>The app store restriction is IP address based as users have reported using the app store through virtual private network (VPN).</p>

<p>A tech support site Bleeping computer also quoted a researcher in their report&nbsp;saying that he was only able to access app store through VPN.</p>

<p>Apple has not issued any official statement regarding the restricted access.</p>

<p>Apple already does not&nbsp;sell its products in Iran due to US-imposed economic sanctions.</p>

<p>People import their iPhone&nbsp;from other countries.</p>

<p>Being a US company Apple has restricted its access in other ways in the past.</p>

<p>In 2017 all apps made by Iranian developers were removed from the store.</p>

<p>Many people on Twitter showed an outrage toward the company for blocking app store access.</p>

Iranian iPhone users blocked from App Store: Reports

<p>The official Twitter handle of Air India was hacked on Thursday&nbsp;morning.</p>

<p>The cyber attack was carried out by suspected Turkish hackers with the cover picture showing image of Turkish Airline with tweets in Turkish language.</p>

<p>Pro-Turkish tweets were also seen in the account.</p>

<p>One of the retweets claimed that the Air India account has been hacked by the Turkish cyber army Ayyildiz Tim.</p>

The cyber attack was carried out by suspected Turkish hackers with the cover picture showing image of Turkish Airline with tweets in Turkish language.
