Although still standing, authorities are reported to have taken the decision to evacuate it.

Earthquake hit Turkiye and Syria both, why is the response different?

A section of the Indian media earlier reported that&nbsp;Pakistan denied airspace to Indian aircraft carrying humanitarian aid and rescue teams to earthquake-hit Turkey.&nbsp;There was no confirmation either from the Indian or the Pakistani side of this development.

CNN-News18 reported that the Indian Air Force's C-17&nbsp;Globemaster&nbsp;had to take a detour because Pakistan denied permission to use its airspace.

However, it emerged that Indian planes didn't fly over Pakistan to reach Ankara. It is believed that the Indian establishment never asked for permission from the Pakistan aviation authorities&nbsp;with regard to sending their military aircraft.

Even during the evacuation of Indians from Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover in August 2021, Indian military planes flew from Kabul to Dushanbe and used Iranian airspace to come back to India.

Reacting to the development,&nbsp;Turkish ambassador to India, Firat Sunel, told WION's Diplomatic Correspondent Sidhant Sibal that he has "no information"&nbsp; on Indian military aircraft not being allowed to fly over Pakistani airspace.

Earlier in the day, India sent two Indian Air Force's C-17 aircraft, one of which departed on Monday late at night, while the second batch flew off on early Tuesday.

The first batch of earthquake relief material carried search &amp;and rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), specially trained dog squads, medical supplies, drilling machines and other necessary equipment to help Turkey in the evacuation of civilians.

On Monday, India’s junior foreign minister V Muraleedharan paid a visit to Turkey’s embassy in New Delhi to express condolences. He also conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s sympathy and humanitarian support.

Meanwhile, the total death toll rose to 4,983 as the search and rescue operation to find the survivors was underway.

According to local media reports, Turkey has recorded 3,381 fatalities, while Syria reported 1,602 casualties.

Did Pakistan deny airspace to Indian military plane carrying humanitarian aid to Turkey? Here's what we know

India's&nbsp;National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams conducting rescue and operations in earthquake-hit Turkey will be aided by Indian eyes-in-the-sky, in the form of indigenous drones. Based on a formal request from the NDRF, Chennai-based drone firm Garuda Aerospace has mobilised two drones for catering to airborne surveillance, thermal imaging, and delivery of essential goods to hard-to-reach locations. The drones are being flown to Turkey on an aircraft of the Indian Air Force and are expected to reach the destination late at night, Indian time.

Speaking to WION, Garuda Aerospace CEO &amp; Founder Agnishwar Jayaprakash&nbsp;said that their lightest drone 'Droni' would be utilised for surveillance in the most affected areas. They will help&nbsp;identify locations where victims could be trapped under rubble. In addition to this, their heavier drone — 'Kisan Drone' — would help in carrying medicines, emergency supplies and food for the victims.&nbsp;

Garuda Aerospace's 'Kisan Drone' recently received type certification and Remote Pilot Training Organisation (RPTO) approval from the Indian Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The company said that they were the first in the country to get these approvals.

The epicentre of Monday's earthquake was at a depth of about 17.9 kilometres near the Turkish city of Gaziantep. The city is home to around two million people.&nbsp;

Later experts revealed that the earthquake was caused by the Arabian tectonic plate moving northward. Turkey is prone to earthquakes as it sits above major faultlines, bordering the Anatolian Plate, Arabian Plate and Eurasian Plate.&nbsp;

According to the meteorologists, about a 225 km stretch of the fault between the Anatolian Plate and the Arabian Plate has been damaged.&nbsp;

Dr Carlo Doglioni, who is an Italian seismologist told the news site Italy 24, that after the earthquake, Turkey could even have slipped by up to "five to six metres compared to Syria".&nbsp;

As quoted by media reports, Dr Doglioni, who is a president of the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, said that "what we call the Arabian plate moved about three meters along the northeast-southwest direction in relation to the Anatolian plate; we are talking about a structure in the border area between this world, that of the Arabian plate and that of the Anatolian plate".&nbsp;

Although, he did mention that more information is needed to produce a concrete result the analysis is based on preliminary data.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, a Daily Mail report quoted Dr Bob Holdsworth, a professor of structural geology at Durham University, as saying that the plate shift was "perfectly reasonable" considering the magnitude of the earthquake.&nbsp;

"There is a fairly predictable, widely documented relationship between the magnitude of an earthquake and the typical offset that occurs," Dr Holdsworth told Daily Mail.&nbsp;

"As a rule of thumb, a magnitude 6.5 to 6.9 event is associated with an offset of around one metre – whilst the largest known earthquakes can involve offsets of 10 to 15 metres," he added.&nbsp;

"The faults that slipped yesterday in Turkey are strike-slip faults that involve mainly horizontal displacements, and so the overall offsets in the region of 3 to 6 metres proposed here are perfectly reasonable," he further said.&nbsp;

In the clip, Hoogerbeets can be heard saying, “These areas could be next candidate for larger seismic activity if we look at the atmospheric fluctuations but again keep in mind that these are rough estimates and not all large earthquakes leave a footprint in the atmosphere they do not always announce themselves”.

He claims that these estimations are tentative because not all significant earthquakes can be detected by atmospheric fluctuations.

However, Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has rejected the earthquake predictions in Pakistan, saying that there is no similarity between the fault lines of Turkey and Pakistan.

“There is no scientific basis for earthquake predictions. Pakistan has its own state-of-the-art monitoring system which is keeping an eye on the aftershocks in Turkiye and Syria,” PMD Director Shahid Abbas said.

After the major earthquake hit the region, the Dutch researcher said, “My heart goes out to everyone affected by the major earthquake in Central Turkey. As I stated earlier, sooner or later this would happen in this region, similar to the years 115 and 526. These earthquakes are always preceded by critical planetary geometry, as we had on 4-5 Feb."

The earthquake has brought down massive multi-storey buildings and whole apartment blocks.&nbsp;

As per Reuters, this is the worst tremor to hit Turkey&nbsp;this century. In war-hit Syria, it has only added to the devastation already being borne by millions of Syrians who for 11 years have been plagued by war.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, as per Reuters, called this a "historic disaster" and the worst tremor to hit the country since 1939. As per the leader who is currently preparing for a tough election in May, authorities are doing everything they could do.

Reportedly, the United Nations is also present on the ground to assess the needs and provide assistance.

Death toll from Syria-Turkey earthquake crosses 3,700; international community steps in to help

Turkey-Syria earthquake:&nbsp;Turkey and Syria were hit by two massive earthquakes on Monday, 6 February. More than 4000 people have been found dead yet and this number is expected to rise as search and rescue operations are still going on. The first earthquake struck central Turkey and northwest Syria, which was one of the most powerful quakes in the region in at least a century. The tremors of the second earthquake were felt hours later.

The first earthquake was of 7.8 magnitude, which hit in the early darkness of a winter morning. The second quake was felt at 7.7 magnitude in the middle of the day on Monday, as rescuers in both countries were still attempting to search for survivors. The images coming out of both countries show panicked people sheltering in the street as building around them quaked during the aftershock in the town of Kahramanmaras, north of Gaziantep.&nbsp;

Horrors of these massive earthquakes were felt as far as Lebanon, Greece, Israel and the island of Cyprus. In southern Turkey, 150 miles from the border with Syria and 50 miles from the epicentre of the earthquake in Kahramanmaras people felt aftershocks hours later.&nbsp;

Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) said that at least 5,600 structures have crumbled till now due to Monday’s disastrous earthquakes. The Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan said search and rescue teams had been dispatched to the affected areas. “We do not know how high the number of dead and injured will go. Our hope is to get through this disaster with the least loss”, he said in a speech.

He also added that this is the biggest disaster that Turkey has experienced in the last century after the 1939 Ezrincan earthquake. &nbsp;Apart from the epicentre, many parts of Turkey and Syria were heavily damaged due to these quakes:

1. Kahramanmaras, Turkey: &nbsp;The second 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck Kahramanmaraş province in central Turkey following the first deadly earthquake that killed at least 1,000 people and wounded over 7,000, the country's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said Monday.

More than 1400 people have been reported dead so far in northern Syria following the quake. Even before the earthquake, the situation was grim in the city, with freezing weather, crumbling infrastructure and a cholera outbreak causing misery to many.

Sidhant Sibal: What is the current situation in your country?

Firat Sunel: I just want to make my first comment, this is not just one earthquake there were two huge earthquakes, magnitude 7 and 7.6 and followed by almost 300 aftershocks. So, the damage is very big, because almost 14 million people are impacted in 10 cities. The devastation is huge, let me tell some actual numbers.

The death toll is almost 3000, more than 15000 injured and 4700 buildings collapsed in the region. So some airports are already closed in the region but other airports in neighbouring the region are open and we use it for humanitarian help.

Sidhant Sibal: Your government must be overwhelmed, if you can talk about the measures taken by your government.&nbsp;

Firat Sunel: Yes, thinking of the extent of the devastation, the size of the region, it is not an easy task. Two huge earthquakes in the same day. There are 15000 search and rescue teams including our health teams. More than 5000 military personnel are there, so are some sanitary facility toilets, bathrooms, field hospitals, crisis management team.

They have been working without any interruption since the first earthquake. We also have some foreign search and rescue teams. There are about 2700, with rescue dogs, out 65 countries in which India is also included.

In Turkish, there is a proverb, 'dost-dost kara günde belli olur', which means friend in need is a friend indeed. So the friends help each other when they are in need.&nbsp;You may recall, you were the first person to report about Turkey's medical aid in May 2021. During covid time Turkey sent two airplanes loaded with 45 tonnes of medical aid.

Now devastation is&nbsp;huge in Turkey&nbsp;and PM Narendra Modi gave immediate instructions to build a crisis centre and all relevant Indian authorities had a meeting yesterday. I was also there for cooperation, and this is an example of good friendship, and we really appreciate it so much.

India decided to send two planes, a search, and a rescue team. One of them left yesterday in the night-time and has arrived in the country two hours ago with 23 tonnes of equipment&nbsp;and more than 50 search rescue personnel. They are in the region and have&nbsp;started their activities.

In one hour, a second plane is also going to Turkey, this is also a big military aircraft. This is also a huge help for Turkey. We appreciate it very much. We appreciate not&nbsp;only the material help, but also for standing by Turkey.&nbsp;There are lot of messages from PM Modi to EAM Jaishankar.&nbsp;

Sidhant Sibal: It hasn't been very very easy for you as well, you had a sleepless night, coordinating here

Firat Sunel: Yes, you had the right expression, we had a sleepless night. We had to coordinate everything&nbsp;with relevant authorities in India and also in Turkey. Not only me, the whole embassy team as well as the Indian embassy in Turkey spent a sleepless night. They also chad to coordinate. I think we will have more sleepless nights to coordinate this.

Rescuers found her amid the rubble, 65 hours later. The man who rescued Elif says she did not let go of his finger - until they reached the first aid tent.

Another survivor, a 14-year-old girl was pulled out after 58 hours. The rescue teams applauded, as she was stretchered off to the hospital.

16-year-old Inci Okan is another survivor, whose dramatic rescue was captured on video.

Here’s an excerpt from when she was rescued.&nbsp; “Sister, i am really scared”, Okan said in Turkish. National medical rescue team member was then heard saying, ‘’don't be afraid. There is nothing to be afraid of."

“Can you hold my hand?”, Okan said.

“Inci, Inci look at me. How long have you been playing violin?”, the rescuer asked her, to which she replied “eleven years”.

Okan is currently in a hospital, and has promised to play violin for her rescuer. Ahmet Citim, another survivor was rescued from the rubble after 33 hours. Ahmet's home was among the 20 residential buildings that collapsed in the quake.

Many animals are also trapped in the rubble. A rabbit was pulled out unharmed by rescuers.

And a cat was also brought to safety by firefighters. The earthquake has left hundreds homeless. Many people have sought refuge at a temporary camp in the city.

Elif`s two sisters and brother were rescued along with their mother on Saturday, but one of the children subsequently died.

"A thousand thanks to you, my God. We have brought out our little one Elif from the apartment block," Mehmet Gulluoglu, head of Turkey`s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), wrote on Twitter.

More than 3,500 tents and 13,000 beds have been supplied to provide temporary shelter, according to AFAD, which said 962 people had been injured in Friday`s earthquake.

More than 740 victims have so far been discharged from hospitals, AFAD said.

It was the deadliest earthquake in Turkey since one in the eastern city of Van in 2011 which killed more than 500 people. A quake in January this year killed 41 people in the eastern province of Elazig.
