According to the state media, police in quake-hit Turkey have detained around 130&nbsp;contractors after multiple buildings collapsed in the country's south-eastern provinces of Sanliurfa and Gaziantep.

As per the DHA news agency, the people taken into custody includes contractors. Around 6,000 buildings collapsed in the devastating earthquakes that hit the region on Monday, sparking anger in the public over the poor quality of construction.

Police officials are expected to detain more people after Turkey's Vice President Fuat Oktay on Saturday said that 113 arrest warrants have been issued by the prosecutors over the collapse&nbsp;of buildings.

One of the persons detained was a contractor for a collapsed building in Gaziantep, said the agency, adding that the police caught him in Istanbul.

A wave of investigations has been launched by the prosecutors in provinces which have been hit, including Kahramanmaras. The justice ministry has asked the prosecutors to set up special "earthquake crimes investigation offices" in the 10 provinces.

On Friday, another contractor was apprehended by the Turkish police after the high-rise luxury flats, he was associated with, had collapsed in Hatay province.

The police detained him at Istanbul airport when&nbsp;he was trying to flee the country, reports suggested.

On Saturday, an elderly woman and a two-month-old baby were rescued from the rubble. Thousands of rescue workers are still searching for survivors in flattened neighbourhoods even as the misery of the survivors escalates amid&nbsp;freezing&nbsp;weather. However, amid despair, loss and destruction, stories of miraculous survival continue to emerge.

The rescue workers found a two-month-old baby alive in the city of Antakya, 128 hours after the quake, reported state news agency Anadolu.

Meanwhile, families held each other tightly in grief, as a cotton field was transformed into a cemetery as countless bodies arrived for burial.

<h2>Violence disrupts rescue operations</h2>

Meanwhile, outbreaks of violence in southern Turkey hampered the ongoing rescue operations to find survivors. The search operations were paused by the Austrian army and German rescuers on Saturday, because of fighting between unidentified groups.

Austrian army spokesperson Lt Col Pierre Kugelweis said that altercations between factions in the Hatay province forced the Austrian Forces Disaster Relief Unit's personnel to take shelter in a base camp along with other international organisations.

In a statement, Kugelweis said, “There is increasing aggression between factions in Turkey. The chances of saving a life bears no reasonable relation to the safety risk.”

Turkish Ministry of Defence confirmed that the rescue operation was resumed by Austria after protection was provided by the Turkish army.

Operations were also suspended by Germany’s Federal Agency for Technical Relief (TSW) and the German branch of the search and rescue group Isar, citing similar security concerns.

Isar spokesperson Stefan Heine said, “There are more and more reports of clashes between different factions, shots have also been fired.”

German rescue teams confirmed that the rescue work will be resumed as soon as the situation is declared safe by the Turkish authorities.

Turkey-Syria earthquake death toll crosses 33,000 mark

Two prominent Turkish airlines have announced a free-of-cost evacuation drive to help those affected by the earthquake to leave the affected region and get to a safer location. Turkish Airlines and Pegasus Airlines are helping the survivors reach Istanbul, Ankara and Antalya where college and university hostels and tourist resorts have been reserved for the affected people.

Several survivors from Gaziantep, Nurdagi and Hatai have already left for safer locations, while many more have gathered at the Gaziantep airport waiting to fly out.

Meanwhile, rescuers continued to pull out more survivors from the rubble on Sunday, nearly a week after one of the worst earthquakes to hit Turkey and Syria. &nbsp;Turkish authorities are working to maintain order across the disaster zone and have started legal action against contractors over building collapses.

The toll from both countries has surpassed 33,000 and is expected to rise further. It was the deadliest quake in Turkey since 1939.

In Antakya in southern Turkey, business owners emptied their shops to prevent merchandise from being stolen by looters. Residents and aid workers who came from other cities cited worsening security conditions, with widespread accounts of businesses and collapsed homes being robbed.

President Tayyip Erdogan, who is preparing for national elections, has said the government will take strict action against looters.&nbsp;

In Syria, the rebel-held northwest is the worst hit where several people have been left homeless once again after being displaced several times by a decade-old civil war. The region has received little aid compared to government-held areas.

"We will follow this up meticulously until the necessary judicial process is concluded, especially for buildings that suffered heavy damage and buildings that caused deaths and injuries," he said.

Many people and opposition politicians have slammed the government, accusing it of slow and inadequate relief efforts early on. Critics have questioned why the army, which played a key role after a 1999 earthquake, was not brought in sooner.

Erdogan has acknowledged problems, such as the challenge of delivering aid despite damaged transport links, but said the situation had been brought under control.

Proxy maps The statement went on to say that one of the key capabilities of the American space agency is an expert with synthetic aperture radar, or SAR, which is used to measure how the ground moves and built landscape changes after this type of event (in this case, an earthquake). Such maps are made available to several organisations such as the World Bank, the Miyamoto Global Disaster Relief, the US State Department and the California Seismic Safety Commission. NASA said on Saturday that its members provide observations and maps via the Disaster Mapping Portal. Lori Schultz, who is NASA's coordinator for this earthquake, said that the space agency takes seriously its obligation to support open science, and make information widely accessible. "We don’t know everyone who is using this information or how, but we are fortunate to have heard back from a few groups. For instance, the World Central Kitchen – which is providing food to those who’ve been displaced – have let us know they make use of it," Schultz said. Apart from assessing the damage, NASA is also using space- and ground-based observations to improve its ability to understand related events that cascade from the original natural disaster. "By making use of data from the Commercial SmallSat Data Acquisition programme, which acquires observations from commercial satellites to help with NASA’s research goals, as well as from NOAA and international space agencies in Europe and Japan, scientists can spot areas that might be prone to increased landslide risks. Other satellites, such as Suomi-NPP and its nighttime lights observations can show the location of power outages," Saturday's statement said. In Istanbul's Beykoz district, six suspects were arrested for deceiving an earthquake victim in southern Gaziantep, over&nbsp;telephone.

According to reports, the suspects, posing themselves as telecommunications workers, said they could help the victim if he provides his personal banking information.

48 arrested in Turkey for looting, defrauding earthquake-hit victims

An Indian national who was missing since the earthquakes hit Turkey, on February 6, was found dead on Saturday (February 11) under the rubble of a hotel he was staying in. The Indian embassy in Turkey confirmed that the body of the victim, Vijay Kumar Gaud was found in the debris of a hotel in Malatya where he was on a business trip.&nbsp; 
 
According to reports citing officials, the victim’s face was injured beyond recognition and the body was identified by his family by the tattoo of the word “Om” on his hand. “We inform with sorrow that the mortal remains of Shri Vijay Kumar, an Indian national missing in Turkiye since February 6 earthquake, have been found and identified among the debris of a hotel in Malatya, where he was on a business trip,” said the Indian embassy in Turkey, in a tweet.&nbsp;

As per media reports, Gaud was found under the rubble of the four-star Avsar Hotel in Malatya where he was staying since January 25 for a project that was supposed to end by mid-February.&nbsp;

Kumar was sent to Turkey for installing and commissioning an acetylene gas plant in Malatya, as per media reports, and secured his visa by mid-January.&nbsp;According to family sources quoting Indian embassy officials, Gaud’s mortal remains will first be flown to Istanbul and then taken to Delhi, and it may take some three days for his body to reach Uttarakhand, reported PTI.&nbsp;

The earthquakes of magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 were centred in the country's Kahramanmaras province. They were felt by 13 million people across 10 provinces of the country.

According to state news agency Anadolu, this was the first time the crossing had opened since 1988. In 1988, Turkey sent aid to Armenia after the country was hit by a similarly deadly earthquake that killed between 25,000 to 30,000.

Kilic also thanked Armenia and the Armenian national assembly's vice president Ruben Rubinyan. The aid also included medicine, he said.

"Happy to have been able to assist," Rubinyan said on Twitter.

Turkey and Armenia have never established formal diplomatic relations and their shared border has been closed since 1993. Search and rescue workers are working day and night, hoping to find survivors stuck beneath the pile of rubble in Turkey and Syria in the aftermath of massive earthquakes earlier this week.&nbsp;So far, the combined death toll has crossed 25,000 and the local authorities believe that it may rise further as search for survivors is still on.

The rescue workers have been pulling off some miraculous rescues and in yet another case, they saved a six-month pregnant woman and her seven-year-old daughter on Friday evening (February 10) ending their 115 hour torment, the news agency Reuters reported.&nbsp;

Turkish state news agency Anadolu reported that a pregnant woman named Zahide Kaya was pulled out of the rubble alive after 115 hours, in the Nurdagi district of Gaziantep province.&nbsp;

Videos of the moment when the woman was rescued were uploaded on social media in which rescue workers can be seen carrying away the woman and girl on stretchers. They had been reportedly buried under the rubble for 115 hours.&nbsp;

In a press release published on February 7, Dr Natalia Kanem, Executive Director, UNFPA, said: "UNFPA is committed to support the people of Türkiye and Syria affected by the earthquakes, including the pregnant women who are expected to give birth in the coming weeks under these difficult conditions."&nbsp;

"Their ability to access quality care before, during and after delivery must not be an afterthought," Kanem added.&nbsp;

It suddenly shook, I lowered my head as soon as I opened my eyes. I saw my mother fall next to me," the Nişantaşı University student said adding his phone fell next to him and he immediately grabbed it and called his friends. "I thought that if I share it on social media, if all my friends see it, all of them would come," he told the news agency. Kubat said that he was under the rubble for five-and-a-half to six hours and that his friends used a sledgehammer to hit the exact spot on the debris and find him and his family. He added that his friends found him after four-five hits. Boran Kubat's ordeal is one of many such stories in Turkey and Syria, where people, trapped under the debris, finally made it out alive. A few days back, a seven-year-old Syrian girl was seen protecting her little brother as the siblings were trapped under the rubble of their collapsed house. They were rescued after 17 hours. In Syria, a baby was born under the remains of a collapsed building. The mother gave birth under the rubble but passed away shortly. A video which has been doing rounds on social media showed a rescuer running with the newborn in his arms. The baby girl was named Aya, which means miracle in Arabic. Aya's father and four siblings also died. Thousands of people expressed their willingness to adopt her. Aya is currently hospitalised. Rescue workers from around the world have reached the impacted regions to accelerate the work of finding survivors in the pile of rubble and debris. The combined death toll in Turkey and Syria has crossed 12,000 and it might rise. India has sent a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team comprising 151 members with a dog squad and other equipment under 'Operation Dost' to Turkey to assist the other agencies engaged in the post-quake operations. An official said on Thursday that the NDRF personnel managed to pull out a six-year-old girl alive from the debris. Turkey-Syria Earthquake:&nbsp;It’s been three days since the devastating series of earthquakes jolted Turkey and Syria. The death toll has reached more than 15,000 now and is expected to go above 20,000 as search and rescue operations are still going on. Most of the victims are found in the debris of shattered buildings. Many countries like Japan, Britain, India, the US, Germany and others have sent their search teams to quake-hit countries for help and assistance.&nbsp;

During these search and rescue operations, many people have been pulled out of the rubble alive since the disaster took place, however, the question arises of how long people can survive in the rubble of an earthquake. Experts predicted the possibility of survival for up to a week or even more, depending upon the injuries and weather conditions.&nbsp;

Most rescue operations are conducted within the first 24 hours after a disaster. After that, the chances of survival are dropped as each day passes. Many victims succumbed to injuries caused by falling stones or other debris. Along with injuries, access to water, air to breathe and weather also play a crucial role&nbsp;in the survival of the victim.&nbsp;

Temperatures in Turkey, specifically in the quake-stricken city of Gaziantep, plunged to minus five degrees Celsius early Thursday and thousands of families spent their night in cars and makeshift tents. Some were too scared to go out and some were banned to return to their homes.&nbsp;

An emergency and disaster medicine expert at Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr Jarone Lee, said, “It is rare to find survivors after the fifth to seventh days, and most search and rescue teams will consider stopping by then. But, there are many stories of people surviving well past the seven-day mark. Unfortunately, these are usually rare and extraordinary cases”.&nbsp;

People who suffer from traumatic injuries like crush injuries or limb amputations are more likely to face survive through the critical window.&nbsp;

Dr George Chiampas, an emergency medicine specialist at Northwestern University’s Feinberg medical school, said, “If you don’t pull them out in one hour, in that golden hour, there’s really a very low chance of survival. Those with other illnesses, whose health depends on medications, also face grim chances”.&nbsp;

Experts also believe that the age and physical and medical condition of the victim is also important factors for the survival of people stuck under the debris of an earthquake. Generally, younger people are able to survive under these conditions.&nbsp;

Experts also said that the mental state of a person also affects his survival. People trapped next to bodied who have no contact with other survivors or rescuers may give up hope and succumb to mental trauma. Chiampas added, “If you have someone who is alive, you’re leaning on each other to keep fighting”.&nbsp;

This Monday, an earthquake of magnitude 7.8 centred in the Pazarcik district jolted Kahramanmaras and hit several provinces, including Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, Diyarbakir, Adana, Adiyaman, Malatya, Osmaniye, Hatay, and Kilis.

The earthquake was also felt in several neighbouring countries, including Lebanon and Syria. The third earthquake of magnitude 6.0 on the Richter scale hit Goksun, Turkey. The countries were then hit by two more earthquakes of magnitude 5.5 and 5.7 on Tuesday.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a worse secondary health crisis in the areas hit by the earthquake. The world health body said there was a race against time to save lives and also ensure survivors stay alive in dire circumstances.&nbsp;

As quoted by the news agencies, Robert Holden, who is WHO's earthquake response incident manager, said that the focus was on saving lives but insisted it was "imperative to make sure that those who survived the initial disaster... continue to survive".&nbsp;

He further said, "We've got a lot of people who have survived now out in the open, in worsening and horrific conditions&nbsp;with disrupted access to water, fuel, electricity and communications."

Holden told a press conference in Geneva, "We are in real danger of seeing a secondary disaster which may cause harm to more people than the initial disaster if we don't move with the same pace and intensity as we are doing on the search and rescue."&nbsp;

"This is no easy task... The scale of the operation is massive," he added.&nbsp;

<h2>'Put politics aside'&nbsp;</h2>

Meanwhile, a leading United Nations official urged to stop the politics and urged to facilitate aid access to rebel-held areas in Syria's northwest. The official warned that the relief stocks will soon be depleted.&nbsp;

The UN's resident Syria coordinator El-Mostafa Benlamlih said in an interview with the news agency AFP: "Put politics aside and let us do our humanitarian work. We can't afford to wait and negotiate. By the time we negotiate, it's done, it's finished."&nbsp;
