Japan Earthquake: No damage to nuclear plants | Death toll rises to 30

Japan was jolted by a 7.6 magnitude earthquake on January 1st, 2024, with its epicentre in the Noto region. The quake triggered fires, building collapses, and violent shaking of trains. Eyewitness videos captured the moment high waves hit Japan's coast, raising fears of a tsunami. The impact was felt beyond Japan's borders, with tsunami warnings issued in South Korea and Russia's Far Eastern cities.

Tsunami fears in Canada's Vancouver Island after discovery of 45-mile hidden fault line

New Zealand faces the threat of colossal tsunamis, as high as 92 feet, once every 580 years, according to a groundbreaking study that employed a new method to assess tsunami risk.

The research, conducted by a team of experts from Victoria University of Wellington, used synthetic earthquakes, and computer models incorporating factors such as fault system geometry and physics, spanning 30,000 simulated years to comprehend potential tsunami risks to both the country's North and South Islands.

The study holds significance due to the critical proximity of New Zealand to subduction zones, specifically the Hikurangi subduction zone, where the Pacific tectonic plate is beneath the Australian plate just offshore. A subduction zone is a place on Earth where two tectonic plates meet, and one plate is forced beneath the other into the Earth's mantle.

In the study, lead author Laura Hughes highlighted the urgency of comprehending the risks associated with these devastating waves due to the "really short timespan [between] when these earthquakes happened and when the tsunami waves hit."

The research, published in the journal JGR Solid Earth on November 29, revealed that the Hikurangi subduction zone poses the most significant threat, though the Tonga-Kermadec subduction zone to the north can also generate sizable, tsunami-inducing earthquakes.

Japan has reached a major milestone in decommissioning the Fukushima nuclear power plant, which was destroyed in 2011 after a massive earthquake triggered a tsunami in the region. The IAEA has said Japan's plans to release the water from the nuclear plant into the ocean would have a negligible impact on the environment. IAEA Chief Rafel Grossi will visit the plant and inaugurate an IAEA office which will monitor the release. as per reports, it is expected to take 30-40 years.

An asteroid that hit Earth 66 million years ago and wiped out dinosaurs had also triggered a massive tsunami, with its waves reaching miles-high, a study has found.

It said that the tsunami was so large that it started from the Gulf of Mexico and covered half of the Earth till New Zealand. The asteroid’s direct hit spurred a mass extinction of 75 per cent of animal and plant life on the planet.

The scientists from the University of Michigan came to the conclusion after analysing cores from over 100 sites globally and creating digital models of the monstrous waves after the impact of the asteroid— named the Chicxulub impactor — in Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, reports ScienceAlert.

The energy of the asteroid impact was found to be at least 100,000 times larger than the Tonga volcanic eruption earlier this year.

Four former executives from the Fukushima nuclear plant involved in the 2011 disaster were ordered by a Tokyo court to pay damages amounting to around 13 trillion yen ($94.8 billion), according to media reports. The lawsuit was brought against the former officials of the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) by shareholders for their role in the aftermath of the nuclear disaster that was caused by a tsunami. The case was handled by Hiroyuki Kawai who represented the shareholders and made sure that the TEPCO executives ended up paying fines for the disaster.
