There was no one to reassure her this time for on Wednesday night, her husband, 32, was shot dead by a US navy veteran who shouted &quot;Get out of my country&quot; and &quot;terrorist&quot; before opening fire.

Adam Purinton, 51, also injured a friend of Kuchibhotla&#39;s, Alok Madasani, 32, and American Ian Grillot, 24, who had tried to intervene.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Howe, however, declined to elaborate on the motive of the incident, although local police said they were working with the FBI to investigate the case. The FBI was looking at whether it was a hate crime.

According to the IPAS Development Foundation (IDF), ten women die in India every day due to unsafe abortions and more than 5 million women risk having unsafe abortions this year because of the lack of access to safe abortion services.

&ldquo;Despite it being legal, a large number of women are not seeking abortion in safe places. It&rsquo;s mainly due to three main factors: Firstly, in many cases, there are not many safe abortion providers close to the community. Secondly, Then&nbsp;there is a huge stigma around abortion and finally not many women know that abortion is legal in the country. The global gag rule has a conditionality which does not allow local NGOs from talking about abortion or abortion-related services or even referring to abortion.

&quot;This would be a huge barrier in moving these 5 million abortions to safe abortion services,&rdquo; says Vinoj Manning, executive director, IDF.

The Mexico City policy or the Global Gag rule was first introduced under Ronald Reagan in 1984 and is a classic example of politics in the US has repercussions around the globe. The rule is solely dependent on the inclination of the US president, repealed when a Democrat is in office and reinstated when Republican comes to power. Though the legal status of abortion allows the Indian government to spend on it, a large number of NGOs working in rural India are dependent on the funding from the US.

&ldquo;The impact of global gag rule in India will be at different levels, starting first at the woman per se. Women who are being contacted and helped by these NGOs will no longer have information or referrals. It will be a big impact on women&rsquo;s health. At the second level, it is the NGOs themselves that are going to get affected. These NGOs are working towards better maternal and reproductive health services. Now, by banning them from talking about abortion you are inhibiting their scope of work and therefore, the impact they can have on women&rsquo;s health and reproductive rights.&rdquo; says Manning.

And it&rsquo;s not just abortion services that are going to get affected. The fund cut will also affect reproductive health, maternal and child health and HIV services.

&ldquo;It will affect women in rural India where most of these NGOs are working to do away with the taboo around abortion by providing information and creating awareness. It will also affect other family planning and reproductive health services because the NGOs will have to restrict their activities due to lack of funds,&rdquo; says Sreedharan Nair, director of external relations, Family Planning Association of India.

Eight per cent of all maternal deaths happen due to abortion and now when US decides that through their funding they will inhibit Indian agencies from doing anything around abortion, it completely restricts and it&rsquo;s contrary to the Indian rules and philosophies,&rdquo; Manning says.

Breaking away from an eight-year funding will be a huge setback to several NGOs in India that are working to eradicate the taboo around abortion, on the flip side it might just push India to shell out more for abortion and abortion-related services.

Last week&#39;s three-day Nasscom Leadership Forum actually had a funny start with key speaker Mukesh Ambani saying Trump&rsquo;s protectionist measures could be a boon in disguise for India&rsquo;s IT companies. In a way, it is ironic that the point of view of the very organiser of the forum has been put through a shredder.

&nbsp;

&ldquo;The domestic IT industry can focus on solving problems right here, which is a huge market,&rdquo; India&rsquo;s richest man told the gathering. Nasscom has already lowered its revenue growth estimate for the industry to 8-10 per cent from the 10-12 per cent figure it had predicted last February.

&nbsp;

More than 65 per cent of the Indian IT industry&rsquo;s $155 billion revenue comes from the US. But then, why is Mukesh Ambani so hopeful?

&nbsp;

I have tried my best to find a logical reason behind this and, frankly speaking, I do not see India&rsquo;s private sector to have work or the purse to meet a $100 billion shortfall if push comes to shove.

&nbsp;

However, India&rsquo;s Unique Identification (UID) project, more commonly known to Indians as the Aadhar programme, and Ambani&rsquo;s &ldquo;solving problems&rdquo; quip may act as pointers as to how the Indian IT industry may survive if the American and post-Brexit European workflow takes a nosedive.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

For this, one has to take note of the unbroken continuity of the fundamental economic roadmap that the country has embarked upon for the last decade or so. In this light, the policies of the ruling BJP government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi do not really differ with those of the previous UPA government that was headed by Manmohan Singh.

&nbsp;

While Modi has been widely panned by critics for his proximity to big businesses and the alleged largesse the latter have enjoyed from this relationship, I think the 2010 Budget speech in Parliament delivered by then finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, who is now the President of the country, has not received enough scrutiny.

&nbsp;

The part of the speech that I refer to above reads: &ldquo;With development and economic reforms, the focus of economic activity has shifted towards the non-governmental actors, bringing into sharper focus the role of government as an enabler. An enabling government does not try to deliver directly to the citizens everything that they need. Instead it creates an enabling ethos so that individual enterprise and creativity can flourish.&rdquo;

&nbsp;

The outsourcing of Project Aadhar was possibly the first step towards realisation of this plan. Various private companies collected biometric data of residents of India. It was originally supposed to do away with multiple identity silos and duplication of cost and efforts. Its stated purpose was to make life easier for the Indian people, as Nandan Nilekani, former chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), told me in an interview way back in 2010.

&nbsp;

The project rolled over questions pertaining to infringement of civil liberties, encroachment into personal space and the lack of data protection laws such as the United States Federal Privacy Statute or the European Directive on Data Protection. It was argued that lack of identity was the central roadblock that impeded the poor and the marginalised&rsquo;s access to benefits and subsidies.

&nbsp;

Seven years down, the project has already cost the country <a href="https://uidai.gov.in/new/about-uidai/about-uidai/financials.html">Rs 8277.17 crore ($1.24 billion)</a> in cumulative expenditure and, instead of doing away with duplication of cost and efforts, has added yet another identity silo. And a look at the cost break-up will tell anyone who has gained most from the programme.

&nbsp;

If farmers&rsquo; suicide <a href="http://www.rediff.com/news/column/p-sainath-how-states-fudge-the-data-on-farmer-suicides/20140801.htm">figures</a> are any indicator, India&rsquo;s poor have <a href="http://www.thehindu.com/data/indias-new-farm-suicides-data-myths-and-facts/article7461095.ece">not benefitted</a> from Project Aadhar.

On the other hand, Aadhar has helped Reliance&rsquo;s Jio to add a million subscribers a day, as mentioned by Ambani at the Assocham meet.

I have a strong feeling that the push for &ldquo;Digital India&rdquo; and a digital economy is going to act as the safety valve for the IT industry in case the American dream falls apart. If not, it is going to add substantial revenue to the balance sheet. Only around <a href="http://www.internetlivestats.com/internet-users/india/">35 per cent</a> of Indians had access to the Internet till 2016.

&nbsp;

That leaves plenty of avenues in terms of setting up and upgrade of infrastructure, setting up backends and training the vast mass who have lived on the dark side of the digital divide.

&nbsp;

Whether that comes in the form of private-public partnership or simply outsourced contracts or a mix of both is for time to tell. But it is clear that in crucial areas of deliverance that affects real people, the government has taken a clear backseat, creating an enabling atmosphere for&nbsp;corporate takeover.

In this light, Mukesh Ambani&rsquo;s optimism is clearly not misplaced but calibrated on the symbiotic relationship between India&rsquo;s political class and the industry.

US President Donald Trump was speaking to supporters on Saturday when he apparently referred to the Scandinavian country as the site of a terror incident,&nbsp;the latest example of his administration naming a non-existent attack.

He was addressing a campaign-style rally in Florida when he launched into a list of places that have been targeted by terrorists.

&quot;You look at what&#39;s happening in Germany, you look at what&#39;s happening last night in Sweden. Sweden, who would believe this? Sweden. They took in large numbers. They&#39;re having problems like they never thought possible,&quot; he said, provoking mockery on social media.

His speech was aimed at defending his order last month that blocked refugees and travelers from seven majority-Muslim countries from entering the United States.

The order has been suspended by a federal appeals court, and Trump vowed to introduce a new order this week as a means of protecting Americans at home.

He went on to name Brussels, Nice and Paris,&nbsp;European cities that have been struck by deadly terror attacks.On Sunday, Trump tweeted an explanation of his remarks.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Trump miffs Sweden, refers to non-existent terror incident

The Trump administration plans to direct immigration agents to greatly expand the categories of immigrants they target for deportation, according to drafts of two memos seen by Reuters and first reported by McClatchy news organization on Saturday.

Two sources familiar with the plans told Reuters the documents have been approved by Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly, but are under final review by the White House. They are expected to be released to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) early next week.

Under the orders, hundreds of thousands of people would face expedited removal proceedings, including those that had not been prioritised for deportation under former President Barack Obama.

The guidance does leave in place Obama&rsquo;s 2012 executive action that protected 750,000 people brought to the United States illegally by their parents. The fate of the policy, known as DACA, has been hotly debated within the White House, according to sources familiar with the discussions. Trump said in a news conference Friday that DACA was a &ldquo;very difficult subject&rdquo; for him.

The ICE memo also states that immigrants will not be afforded rights under US&nbsp;privacy laws.

The second memo instructs CBP officers to crack down on illegal migration at the border by holding migrants in detention until a determination in their case is made.

The Department of Homeland Security did not deny any information contained in the draft memos but did not provide further detail.

A source familiar with the guidance said the memos were scheduled to be distributed on Friday but the White House made a last-minute request to review them. It is not known whether the White House may alter the guidance.

Kelly said in one of the memos that illegal immigration across the US&nbsp;border with Mexico had &quot;created a significant national security vulnerability to the United States.&quot;&nbsp;

US will no longer insist on two-state solution in Middle East

The White House battled Tuesday to insulate Donald Trump from a scandal over his top aide&#39;s contacts with Russia, as it emerged that the president was aware of the problem for weeks before acting.

With calls for an independent investigation gathering pace, the White House admitted that Trump was told three weeks ago that national security advisor Michael Flynn may have misled colleagues about his Kremlin contacts.

The retired three-star general and former head of US defence intelligence initially denied discussing sanctions strategy with Russia&#39;s ambassador Sergey Kislyak before taking office.

That may have breached US law on negotiating with foreign powers, and at minimum was a significant break with the norm that incoming administrations accept the US has &quot;one government at a time.&quot;&nbsp;

Flynn was asked to resign on Monday, after what the White House said were weeks of internal investigation that turned up no evidence of wrongdoing but &quot;eroded&quot; trust.

Law enforcement and intelligence agents intercepted calls and obtained phone records showing that members of Trump&#39;s 2016 presidential campaign and other aides had repeated contacts with top Russian intelligence officials in the year that preceded the November 8 presidential election, The New York Times reported.

After finding evidence that Russia was seeking to disrupt the election, US intelligence agencies tried to determine whether the Trump campaign was cooperating with Moscow on hacking and other related efforts, according to the Times.

However, the newspaper said, the current and former US officials it cited have not yet found evidence of such collusion.

Paul Manafort, a former Trump advisor who was among those campaign officials picked up on the calls, dismissed the claims as &quot;absurd&quot; in an interview with the Times.

Misleading the vice president

The White House had painted Trump&#39;s final decision as based on Flynn having misled Vice President Mike Pence.

But it emerged Tuesday that Trump kept his deputy, who publicly defended Flynn and repeated his claims, in the dark for two weeks.

Spokesman Marc Lotter said Pence only became aware of the issue on Thursday, in media reports.

Flynn is the third Trump aide to step back amid questions about his ties to Russia since the mogul began his improbable White House bid.&nbsp;

His departure follows those of Manafort and Carter Page, an early foreign policy advisor to the candidate.

The unprecedented early resignation of a key member of staff has rocked an administration already buffeted by leaks, infighting and legal defeats.

Amid the tumult, the White House denied that Trump had instructed Flynn to discuss the possibility that Obama-era sanctions would be rolled back.

MSCI&#39;s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up 0.5 per cent to the highest level since July 2015&nbsp;and was on track to gain 1.5 for the week. The Shanghai Composite Index was up 0.4 per cent.

Japan&#39;s Nikkei stock index surged 2.3 per cent thanks to the tailwind from a weaker currency&nbsp;and was poised to added 2.2 per cent for the week.

Asian shares scale 1-1/2-year peak on China trade, Trump's tax cut talk

&ldquo;The press takes him literally, but not seriously; his supporters take him seriously, but not literally.&rdquo;&nbsp;

This is the neatly balanced phrase (which first appeared in an article in The Atlantic by writer Salena Zito) that became the world&rsquo;s favourite explanation for &ldquo;the Trump phenomenon.&rdquo;&nbsp;

It was trotted out again and again by television pundits and columnists in the weeks of soul-searching after the election that turned a phenomenon into a President-elect.&nbsp;

For Donald Trump&rsquo;s opponents, it became a mantra of hope as they tried to process the aftermath of his victory.&nbsp;

The new president would beef up existing infrastructure on the Mexican border, not build an actual wall made of bricks and mortar. He would tighten up US immigration policy, not actually ban all Muslims.&nbsp;

But after the first three weeks of the Trump administration, many are asking if they should have taken him literally after all.&nbsp;

Just two weeks before polling day last year, Trump gave a speech outlining his &ldquo;contract for the American voter&rdquo; in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln stood in the same spot to deliver his now immortal Gettysburg Address.&nbsp;

In the speech, Trump made a series of specific promises about what he would do on his first day in office. He may have been exaggerating the exact timeline, but he has stuck very close to that script over his first three weeks in office.&nbsp;

In Gettysburg, he pledged to put in place funding for the Mexico border wall in his first 100 days in office.&nbsp;

On trade, he said he would renegotiate the NAFTA deal and pull the US out of the TPP.&nbsp;

He also promised to clear roadblocks to energy infrastructure projects like the Keystone Pipeline.&nbsp;

And most controversially of all, he promised to &ldquo;suspend immigration from terror-prone regions where vetting cannot safely occur.&rdquo;&nbsp;

That commitment became reality when Trump signed an executive order banning entry into the US by citizens from seven predominantly Muslim countries including Iraq and Iran.&nbsp;

The other pledges have either been delivered, with the US officially pulling out of the TPP, or are in the works, as with the order for immediate construction of the Mexico border wall.&nbsp;

The courts will decide if the highly contentious travel ban is upheld in the medium term, but Trump&rsquo;s record in terms of delivering on campaign promises is so far very strong indeed.&nbsp;

This record is simultaneously validating the votes of his supporters and putting fear into the hearts of his opponents.&nbsp;

Meanwhile the situation leaves the US media and political analysts in completely uncharted waters. On an almost daily basis, the White House are caught playing fast and loose with the facts.&nbsp;

Just this week, the president&rsquo;s counsellor, Kellyanne Conway invoked several terror attacks including the &ldquo;Bowling Green massacre&rdquo; to defend the controversial travel ban. But fact-checkers quickly confirmed that the so-called massacre at Bowling Green never took place.&nbsp;

So even though nobody can accuse Trump of not doing almost exactly what he said he would do, &ldquo;alternative facts&rdquo; are replacing the truth as justification for those very policies.&nbsp;

Trump?s first three weeks in office are steadily dismantling the received logic about whether his campaign promises would become reality

“The press takes him literally, but not seriously; his supporters take him seriously, but not literally.” This is the neatly balanced phrase (which first appeared in an article in The Atlantic by writer Salena Zito) that became the world’s favourite explanation for “the Trump phenomenon.” It was trotted out again and again by television pundits and columnists in the weeks of soul-searching after the election that turned a phenomenon into a President-elect. For Donald Trump’s opponents, it became a mantra of hope as they tried to process the aftermath of his victory. The new president would beef up existing infrastructure on the Mexican border, not build an actual wall made of bricks and mortar. He would tighten up US immigration policy, not actually ban all Muslims. But after the first three weeks of the Trump administration, many are asking if they should have taken him literally after all. Just two weeks before polling day last year, Trump gave a speech outlining his “contract for the American voter” in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln stood in the same spot to deliver his now immortal Gettysburg Address. In the speech, Trump made a series of specific promises about what he would do on his first day in office. He may have been exaggerating the exact timeline, but he has stuck very close to that script over his first three weeks in office. In Gettysburg, he pledged to put in place funding for the Mexico border wall in his first 100 days in office. On trade, he said he would renegotiate the NAFTA deal and pull the US out of the TPP. He also promised to clear roadblocks to energy infrastructure projects like the Keystone Pipeline. And most controversially of all, he promised to “suspend immigration from terror-prone regions where vetting cannot safely occur.” That commitment became reality when Trump signed an executive order banning entry into the US by citizens from seven predominantly Muslim countries including Iraq and Iran. The other pledges have either been delivered, with the US officially pulling out of the TPP, or are in the works, as with the order for immediate construction of the Mexico border wall. The courts will decide if the highly contentious travel ban is upheld in the medium term, but Trump’s record in terms of delivering on campaign promises is so far very strong indeed. This record is simultaneously validating the votes of his supporters and putting fear into the hearts of his opponents. Meanwhile the situation leaves the US media and political analysts in completely uncharted waters. On an almost daily basis, the White House are caught playing fast and loose with the facts. Just this week, the president’s counsellor, Kellyanne Conway invoked several terror attacks including the “Bowling Green massacre” to defend the controversial travel ban. But fact-checkers quickly confirmed that the so-called massacre at Bowling Green never took place. So even though nobody can accuse Trump of not doing almost exactly what he said he would do, “alternative facts” are replacing the truth as justification for those very policies. United States President Donald Trump has attacked retail chain Nordstrom for dropping his daughter Ivanka&#39;s clothing line.

The US fashion retailer earlier decided to junk Ivanka Trump&#39;s line of shoes and clothing due to poor sales, following massive calls for boycott for selling Trump&#39;s products.

But Donald Trump took to Twitter to express his disapproval: &quot;My daughter Ivanka has been treated so unfairly by&nbsp;Nordstrom.&nbsp;She is a great person -- always pushing me to do the right thing! Terrible!&quot;

Unlike other companies he has attacked on Twitter, including Lockheed, Boeing and Ford,&nbsp;Nordstrom&nbsp;stock had gained nearly one percent in the early afternoon.

Although the fashion chain hasn&#39;t responded to Trump&#39;s attack, it had said last week that the decision was made purely on commercial grounds.

&quot;In this case, based on the brand&#39;s performance, we&#39;ve decided not to buy it for this season,&quot; the company said, noting the phase-out was part of its regular review of the 2,000 brands it sells.

MSCI&#39;s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan ticked down 0.3 per cent, slipping further from Monday&#39;s four-month high, led by 0.9 per cent fall in South Korean shares. Japan&#39;s Nikkei slipped 0.2 per cent.

&quot;The markets are now paying attention to political risks in Europe and the United States, after a rally earlier this week following the strong US payrolls data,&quot; said Kenta Tadaide, senior economist at Mizuho Research Institute.

On Wall Street, the S&amp;P 500 ended barely higher while the Nasdaq edged to a record high as gains in big tech names countered energy declines. With more than half of the S&amp;P 500 having reported results, fourth-quarter earnings are on track to have climbed 8.2 per cent, which would be the best performance since the third quarter of 2014, according to Thomson Reuters.

A raft of strong global economic data and hopes that Trump&#39;s talk of economic stimulus measures had helped to support world share markets, and the dollar, since late last year. But the lack of detail on Trump&#39;s stimulus plans and some other policy stances taken after he was sworn in on January 20 have unsettled investors.

Trump&#39;s protectionist leanings on international trade and controversy over his move to temporarily ban the entry of immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries have caused alarm. &quot;Corporate earnings have been pretty good so far. But without details of Trump&#39;s economic policies, it is hard to become bullish,&quot; said Masahiro Ichikawa, senior strategist at Sumitomo Mitsui Asset Management.

Uncertainty on the new administration&#39;s currency policy is also keeping foreign exchange markets on edge. The dollar has been steadily declining against the yen since Trump signalled displeasure with Japan&#39;s currency stance on January 31.

The US&nbsp;currency traded at 112.35 Yen, having fallen to 111.59 Yen on Tuesday, its lowest since late November. The pair may see limited moves for now as traders look to a meeting between Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Friday.

The Euro, on the other hand, shed 0.6 per cent on Tuesday and last stood at $1.0682, hit by rising concerns that the far right could win France&#39;s presidential vote and take the country out of the Euro. The gap between French and German 10-year borrowing costs widened to 78 basis points, the biggest level since late 2012.

Support for conservative challenger Francois Fillon, who was seen as a frontrunner a few weeks ago, has tumbled in the wake of a financial scandal, losing ground to independent centrist Emmanuel Macron and the anti-EU National Front leader Marine Le Pen.

While most investors expect Le Pen to be defeated in the run-off by a more moderate candidate, markets are nervous after last year&#39;s experience of the Brexit referendum and Trump&#39;s victory.

In addition, wrangling over Greece&#39;s bailout are starting to haunt the market ahead of the euro group meeting on February 20, with two-year Greek debt yield soaring to near 10 percent on Tuesday, compared to around six percent just about two weeks ago.

Elsewhere, the Chinese Yuan dipped slightly following Tuesday&#39;s data that showed China&#39;s foreign exchange reserves unexpectedly fell below the closely watched $3 trillion level in January for the first time in nearly six years. Still, the market impact was limited as the fall in the reserves, of $12.3 billion to $2.998 trillion, was the smallest in seven months, indicating China&#39;s renewed crackdown on outflows appears to be working, at least for now.

The Yuan was little changed after dipping to a&nbsp;one-week low of 6.847 per dollar in offshore trade and three-week low of 6.8916 in the onshore trade. &quot;The fall was relatively small and had limited impact on the mainland markets. It is not like we have seen massive capital outflows,&quot; said Naoki Tashiro, head of TS China Research.

Oil prices extended falls, as a massive increase in US&nbsp;fuel inventories and a slump in Chinese demand implied that global crude markets remain oversupplied despite OPEC-led efforts to cut output.
