In a historic decision, the United Kingdom handed over sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius after over two centuries of control, a move that would allow hundreds of displaced islanders to return to their homeland.

India played a quiet yet key role in facilitating the agreement between the UK and Mauritius, having always supported the claim of Mauritius to the island, which includes Diego Garcia where the United States operates a military base under lease from Britain.

India welcomed the deal, calling it a part of decolonisation even as the UK said it would continue to have the right to use the base in Diego Garcia, the largest island in the archipelago. New Delhi said it was a positive outcome for all the parties, and a move that will enhance long-term security in the Indian Ocean.

After the agreement was announced, Britain and Mauritius issued a joint statement, expressing their commitment to address "historical injustices" and working for the welfare of the Chagossian people.

"This government inherited a situation where the long-term, secure operation of the Diego Garcia military base was under threat, with contested sovereignty and ongoing legal challenges," said UK Foreign Minister David Lammy in a statement. "The agreement secures this vital military base for the future. It will strengthen our role in safeguarding global security, shut down any possibility of the Indian Ocean being used as a dangerous illegal migration route to the UK, as well as guaranteeing our long-term relationship with Mauritius."

In 2019, the International Court of Justice asked the UK to let go of its control of the Chagos Islands, which it governed since 1814. The court's opinion came at the end of a long and sad saga for the Chagossians.

Chagos Islands, a strategically significant archipelago in the Indian Ocean, comprises over 60 islands. Diego Garcia, the largest of these islands, is of military importance because of the US airbase.

The islands were largely uninhabited till around 1783, when the French settlers brought African slaves to work in the coconut plantations they had established there.

The British took control of the islands and nearby Mauritius in 1814, following the Napoleonic Wars which the French lost, leading to Napoleon’s abdication and exile.

It was governed as part of British Mauritius, and Indian indentured labourers were brought to the islands, as well as Mauritius, when slavery was abolished.

Chagos became a contentious land at the height of the Cold War in the 1960s when the US was looking for a military base in the Indian Ocean region. In 1965, Britain separated the Chagos Archipelago from Mauritius and turned it into a British Indian Ocean Territory. It then leased Diego Garcia to the US to build the military base which started operating in 1971.

To facilitate the US, Britain forcibly displaced around 2,000 indigenous Chagossians from the island.

Diego Garcia's military base played a crucial role for the US during its wars in the Gulf and Afghanistan.

In its advisory opinion in 2019, the ICJ called for the end of the British administration of Chagos Island, noting that its decolonisation of Mauritius was incomplete.

Over the years, the Chagossians sought the right to return to their homeland, engaging in long-drawn legal battles, which went all the way up to the ICJ. Their struggles became a key aspect of the cruelties of colonialism and human rights violations.
It will strengthen our role in safeguarding global security, shut down any possibility of the Indian Ocean being used as a dangerous illegal migration route to the UK, as well as guaranteeing our long-term relationship with Mauritius." Watch: UK Agrees To Return Chagos Islands To Mauritius, Ending Decades-Long Dispute × Mauritius Foreign Minister Maneesh Gobin hailed the agreement as "historic". "3rd October 2024. A day to remember. A day to commemorate full sovereignty of the Republic of Mauritius over the entirety of its territory," he wrote on X. US President Joe Biden described the pact as a "historic settlement." “It is a clear demonstration that through diplomacy and partnership, countries can overcome long-standing historical challenges to reach peaceful and mutually beneficial outcomes,” he said in a White House statement.
Nibi was an orphan beaver baby when she was rescued by Newhouse Wildlife Rescue. She became a sensation over the years at the rescue centre with her friendly behaviour and cute antics. A thief felt compelled to return the idols of Hindu deities he had stolen from a temple in the Indian holy city of Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, after he was constantly haunted by scary dreams besides sudden illness of his family members.

A thief felt compelled to return the idols of Hindu deities he had stolen from a temple in the Indian holy city of Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, after he was constantly haunted by scary dreams besides sudden illness of his family members. The thief had reportedly stolen the precious ashtadhatu idols of Radha Krishna from the temple located near the famous Gau Ghat ashram under the limits of Nawabganj police station in the trans-Ganga pocket of Prayagraj district. The thief left behind a confession letter in which he revealed that he was compelled to return the idols after scary nightmares. As per a report in Times of India, local police said that the thief asked for forgiveness in the letter. Nawabganj inspector Anil Kumar Mishra was quoted as saying by TOI, “Mahant Swami Jairam Das Maharaj, the priest of Gau Ghat Ashram temple, had lodged a complaint with Nawabganj police station stating that the precious ashtadhatu idols of Radha Krishna was stolen from the temple on the night of September 23. We registered an FIR against unidentified thieves under the appropriate sections of Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita.” Also read: Another 'doomsday fish' makes an appearance, this time in Australia “Locals on Tuesday evening spotted a man running after leaving a sack outside the ashram road and became doubtful and frightened over the unclaimed sack.
Food is associated with happiness for many of us; no wonder there's something called stress eating. Now, a study on fruit flies found that there is a link between swallowing food and the release of happy hormones in the brain.

How do we humans distinguish between good and bad food? For most of us, our parents told us what to eat and what not to. But how do animals do the same process? Deciding what to eat, according to the researchers who conducted the fruit fly study, is "arguably the single-most salient decision that an animal has to make" as it's a critical part of survival in the wild.

That decision, it appears, is coded in the brains based on a reward system, or simply put, the release of happy hormones when good food goes through the gut.

The astronomers were initially able to detect Barnard b's gravitational effects on its host star. There were hints of the existence of the planet since 2018. Following closer observation, Barnard b was located by scientists, who also think there may be at least three more exoplanets orbiting Barnard's star. "Even if it took a long time, we were always confident that we could find something," Space.com quoted astronomer Jonay González Hernández of the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands in Spain as saying. Barnard's star is a constant subject of observation and curiosity for astronomers, as it could offer insights into the existence of star-planet systems similar to our solar system, that could potentially host life.
Mount Everest has been growing taller slowly over the years and that's not news, as the mountain was created when two tectonic plates crashed into each other over millennia. But a new study has suggested that there's a relatively sudden growth spurt in the world's tallest peak, and this time it's being attributed to "river piracy".

The study published in Nature Journal examined GPS measurements over the years to reach a conclusion. It found that Everest, also known as Chomolungma or Sagarmatha, was growing at 0.08 inches or 2 millimetres per year, as opposed to the regular 0.04 inches or 1mm per year.

The study by University College London researchers said it "uncovers a previously unrecognised, additional mechanism of rock uplift active since river capture."

While Everest is 8,849 metres tall, the nearby peak K2 is 8,611 m. The other three highest mountains in the Himalayas stand at 8,586 m, 8,516 m and 8,485 m, an elevation difference of not more than 100 m.

The researchers suggest that it could be because rocks below the mountain base are being eroded over the years by the rivers flowing in the area.

In science-speak, it is a phenomenon of 'river drainage piracy' and 'river capture'.

The erosion of the rocks appears to affect the nearby peaks more than Mount Everest.

It is being caused by the merging of two rivers down below that happened tens of thousands of years ago.

SUGA, 31, was discovered lying on the ground next to his e-scooter by police late at night on August 6, with a blood alcohol level well over the legal limit.

The singer, who is currently performing mandatory military duties as a social service agent, has already had his driving licence revoked.

The Seoul Western District Court "imposed a 15 million-won fine ($11,465) on the 31-year-old artist, whose legal name is Min Yoon-gi, last Friday, a sentence that is identical to the prosecutors' request", Yonhap said, citing legal sources.

A member of K-pop megagroup BTS was hit with an $11,000 fine -- almost the maximum possible -- for driving an electric scooter while drunk, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported Monday. Police have said SUGA's blood alcohol level was 0.227 percent -- nearly three times what is permitted by law. Driving with a blood alcohol level over 0.2 percent can result in a prison sentence of up to five years or a fine of up to 20 million won under the South Korean Road Traffic Act. Seoul's Military Manpower Administration has said that SUGA will be punished according to the traffic law, not military law, as the incident happened outside of his official working hours.
SP Oswal, the CEO of India's largest textile group Vardhaman, is the latest victim of cyber criminals who extorted 70 million rupees from him in an elaborate scheme that put him in a so-called 'digital custody'.
Speaking to Indian media, 82-year-old Oswal said the fraudsters posed as Indian regulators, investigative agency sleuths, police, and the Chief Justice of India in a fake 'Supreme Court hearing' over Skype, to make him pay for a 'money laundering' case in which he was, according to them, a co-accused along with Jet Airways founder Naresh Goel.
But when she was born and the doctor gave her in my hands, it’s a feeling you can’t describe. It’s like somebody has taken my heart and put it in my hands. It’s the love of your life, it’s too good. It’s too good. Never felt like that about anybody or anything in life.”

In the same interview with Nikhil, Ranbir shared that a lot has changed since the birth of her daughter as he went on to reveal that he has finally quit smoking post her birth.
