Over the weekend, India's Ministry of External Affairs issued an updated advisory for Bangladesh in which it "strongly advised" Indians against travelling to the country that has seen increased violence in the last 24 hours.

The MEA statement said, "All Indian nationals presently in Bangladesh are advised to exercise extreme caution, restrict their movements and remain in contact with the High Commission of India in Dhaka through their emergency phone numbers". Over 8000 Indian students have left Bangladesh since the outbreak of violence in the last few weeks.

Last week saw India issuing an advisory for Lebanon and Israel as the situation worsens in the backdrop of the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran which Iran blames on Israeli authorities. Some strong reaction is being expected from Iran, keeping West Asia on the edge.

The Indian embassy in Lebanon issued three&nbsp;back-to-back advisories, the last one advising Indians against all travel to and from Lebanon. The residents of United Arab Emirates keen on exploring Europe faced significant financial losses due to rejected Schengen visa applications in 2023, totalling AED16.8 million ($4.57 million), according to a recent report. The massive rejection rate has left many travellers disappointed and significantly out of pocket.

The number of rejected visa applications from the UAE last year stood at 22.44 per cent. This is a 25 per cent increase from the previous year. Schengen Visa Info, which claims to have guided "more than 280 million individuals" since 2013, reported this worrying trend.

As of June 11, 2024, the cost of a Schengen visa application was nearly AED320 ($87.12), excluding the additional service fees which varies by location. To add to the financial burden, the European Commission lately announced a 12 per cent global increase in Schengen visa fees (visa type C).

In total, UAE residents were granted 177,213 Schengen visas in 2023. Spain topped the list with 20,843 visas granted, boasting an approval rate of 80.09 per cent. Poland emerged as the easiest country to secure a Schengen visa from the UAE, approving 90.61% of applications.

The US Energy Information Administration data showed refiners' net production of jet fuel rose to about 1.9 million barrels per day (bpd) last week, an increase of 8 per cent versus the same period in the previous year and the largest weekly total since January 2020.&nbsp;

Government agencies and travel groups are preparing for the highest number of passengers at airports this summer, with jet fuel consumption rising above pre-pandemic levels for the first time. A record 5.74 million people will be flying around the July 4 holiday, according to estimates by the American Automobile Association.&nbsp;

A recent note from JPMorgan analysed that global jet fuel demand has surged above pre-pandemic levels for the first time. Data from the US Energy Information Administration showed the four-week average jet fuel demand at 1.75 million barrels per day (bpd) last week, the highest for this time since 2019.&nbsp;

According to Matias Togni, founder of energy research firm Galpon Shipping &amp; Trading, greater refinery output should help keep the market well-supplied to match the surge in demand expected over the holidays. Since the beginning of the year, US refiners have built more than 2 million barrels of jet fuel in stockpiles, pushing inventories to 41.95 million barrels as of June 14. That is 2 per cent more than last year and in line with the five-year seasonal average.&nbsp;

Despite higher travel forecasts, domestic airfares around the July 4 holiday are down 2 per cent from last year, said AAA. And according to flight tracker Airportia, total US flights are up 1 per cent compared to last year. On Thursday alone, Airportia tracked 30,264 US flights, a 7.2 per cent increase over the same time last year.&nbsp;

Boosting jet fuel production, combined with rising passenger traffic, indicates that the hard-hit aviation industry is on the path to a full recovery from the pandemic. Duo and solo travelers made up the largest segment, while small groups (3-5 people) and medium-sized groups (5+ people) were the fastest growing, with increases of approximately 67 per cent and 68 per cent year-on-year, respectively, in 2023.

We are talking about art galleries, wine estates, freedom squares, graffiti on the walls, historic churches, modern architecture and a lot more within walking distance from each other. With immense culture, history and good food to offer, Georgia is now making it to every Indian traveller’s wishlist. Vegetarian food is a major element when Indians are travelling and Georgia has multiple vegetarian options to offer. Interestingly, most of the traditional local food in Georgia is vegetarian and also spicy, thereby fitting into the food palate of Indians perfectly.&nbsp; 
 
Every street you walk on in Georgia will have exciting food options to offer, but here are my top recommendations.

Filini - Filini is an Italian restaurant with an outdoor terrace bearing stunning views of Tbilisi outside. It is located in Republic Square itself. If the weather is warm and sunny, it is perfect to sit outdoors. The view from Filini also opens to the Ferris wheel on Mtatsminda, a popular viewpoint in Tbilisi. I specifically enjoyed the pizzas and pastas at Filini, safe choices for all vegetarians and they can be made eggless too. The cocktails and the wine selection was also interesting. With a wide range of local Georgian wines on offer, including those from Kakheti region in Georgia, Filini was a delightful experience overall. The restaurant felt especially welcoming to me as an Indian since they were mindful of eggless options and the spice level of their food was also friendly to my taste palate. I will go back to Filini for the views from their terrace and their spectacular cocktails.

Republic 24 -&nbsp;Republic 24 is located at Republic Square where the name of the street changes often in Georgia based on the political scenario in the country. The cuisine offered here is local traditional Georgian. I tried a few Georgian dips with local bread including Pkhaili, which is made of spinach, beetroot, cabbage and walnuts. This dip was particularly flavourful with intense aromas of local herbs from Georgia. I also tried the Ispanakhis Pkhaili dip, made of garlic, cilantro and red wine vinegar. This dip had a particular yogurt-like flavor. Finally, Ajika, my favorite dip of all which is on a very spicy side. As an Indian, I rarely find anything that is too spicy for my taste levels, however, this dish did it for me. The ambience at Republic 24 is also fitting for its Georgian cuisine with graffiti art on the walls outside. The ambience inside the restaurant was rather European and unassuming, which allowed me to enjoy the food for what it was. What I loved most about Republic 24 was definitely their traditional Georgian cuisine.

Natella - Natella is another Georgian restaurant located in Tsinandali Estate in the Kakheti region of Georgia. The view from Natella is that of beautiful garden openings and Kakheti mountains in the distance. The interiors at Natella are blue in colour with large bulbs and butterfly structures. At Natella, I tried Khachapuri, a traditional cheese filled bread that tastes almost like pizza with the Ajika dip. I also tried Khinkali, traditional Georgian momos with a mushroom filling inside. It was interesting to draw parallels between Indian food and Georgian food while I tried the food at Natella. Interestingly, Khachapuri is somewhat like the Indian roti, with a cheese filling inside. Khinkali resembles the momos we eat around the Himalayas in regions like Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. The wine collection at Natella was also lovely. Personally, my favourite thing about Natella was the whole vibe inside the restaurant which teleported me to a fantasy land. It felt almost like a fairy tale. Not too far from Natella, is a tiny museum dedicated to the history of the family that owns the land on which Natella is located. That too is an interesting addition to the dining experience.

Umami - Umami is an Asian cuisine restaurant located inside the Radisson Hotel in Tbilisi. I did not expect to get vegetarian Asian food in Georgia however I fortunately chanced upon Umami. They had a selection of dimsums and sushi, including cucumber roll and avocado roll. They also had edamame pods for starters that were served with a spicy dip. Umami had a fine dine vibe with great interiors and lovely food. I wouldn’t say anything I tried at Umami was too unique or something that I couldn’t easily find in India. The restaurant almost looks like a cavern studded by lights from the inside making it perfect for a dinner date. Their wine collection is something sommeliers look up to globally. I tried Quarry wine here for the first time, which is made by fermenting white wine in deep claypots underground. The transformation process creates an orange coloured wine which is unique and stronger in flavor. Most people have only heard of red, white and rose wine. However, orange wine was a new addition I chanced upon trying. I also enjoyed their pastas since most of them were homemade and I cannot forget to mention their burrata salad with fresh baby tomatoes plucked from a farm nearby. In the mornings, Prince Alexander transforms into a breakfast restaurant with lovely avocado on toast and fresh juices on display.

Vegetarian food is a major element when Indians are travelling and Georgia has multiple vegetarian options to offer. Interestingly, most of the traditional local food in Georgia is vegetarian and also spicy, thereby fitting into the food palate of Indians perfectly. Every street you walk on in Georgia will have exciting food options to offer, but here are my top recommendations. Filini - Filini is an Italian restaurant with an outdoor terrace bearing stunning views of Tbilisi outside. It is located in Republic Square itself. If the weather is warm and sunny, it is perfect to sit outdoors. The view from Filini also opens to the Ferris wheel on Mtatsminda, a popular viewpoint in Tbilisi. I specifically enjoyed the pizzas and pastas at Filini, safe choices for all vegetarians and they can be made eggless too. The cocktails and the wine selection was also interesting. With a wide range of local Georgian wines on offer, including those from Kakheti region in Georgia, Filini was a delightful experience overall. The restaurant felt especially welcoming to me as an Indian since they were mindful of eggless options and the spice level of their food was also friendly to my taste palate. I will go back to Filini for the views from their terrace and their spectacular cocktails. Republic 24 - Republic 24 is located at Republic Square where the name of the street changes often in Georgia based on the political scenario in the country. The cuisine offered here is local traditional Georgian. I tried a few Georgian dips with local bread including Pkhaili, which is made of spinach, beetroot, cabbage and walnuts. This dip was particularly flavourful with intense aromas of local herbs from Georgia. I also tried the Ispanakhis Pkhaili dip, made of garlic, cilantro and red wine vinegar. This dip had a particular yogurt-like flavor. Finally, Ajika, my favorite dip of all which is on a very spicy side. As an Indian, I rarely find anything that is too spicy for my taste levels, however, this dish did it for me. The ambience at Republic 24 is also fitting for its Georgian cuisine with graffiti art on the walls outside. The ambience inside the restaurant was rather European and unassuming, which allowed me to enjoy the food for what it was. What I loved most about Republic 24 was definitely their traditional Georgian cuisine. Natella - Natella is another Georgian restaurant located in Tsinandali Estate in the Kakheti region of Georgia. The view from Natella is that of beautiful garden openings and Kakheti mountains in the distance. The interiors at Natella are blue in colour with large bulbs and butterfly structures. At Natella, I tried Khachapuri, a traditional cheese filled bread that tastes almost like pizza with the Ajika dip. I also tried Khinkali, traditional Georgian momos with a mushroom filling inside. It was interesting to draw parallels between Indian food and Georgian food while I tried the food at Natella. Interestingly, Khachapuri is somewhat like the Indian roti, with a cheese filling inside. Khinkali resembles the momos we eat around the Himalayas in regions like Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. The wine collection at Natella was also lovely. Personally, my favourite thing about Natella was the whole vibe inside the restaurant which teleported me to a fantasy land. It felt almost like a fairy tale. Not too far from Natella, is a tiny museum dedicated to the history of the family that owns the land on which Natella is located. That too is an interesting addition to the dining experience. Umami - Umami is an Asian cuisine restaurant located inside the Radisson Hotel in Tbilisi. I did not expect to get vegetarian Asian food in Georgia however I fortunately chanced upon Umami. They had a selection of dimsums and sushi, including cucumber roll and avocado roll. They also had edamame pods for starters that were served with a spicy dip. “We believe that the record of having no baggage lost since the opening of the airport is the result of the daily efforts and careful work of everyone involved, including airlines and handling companies,” said the airport which will celebrate its 30th anniversary in September this year.&nbsp;

Traveller books accommodation via MakeMyTrip, finds construction going on at site

Freezing rain, snow and ice have snarled traffic in central, eastern and southern China as millions of people travel home ahead of the Spring Festival holiday in the blistering cold that has swept through parts of the country over the past week.

Southern Hunan and central Hubei provinces bore the brunt of the severe weather, which deteriorated over the weekend, slowing highway traffic to a crawl, cancelling hundreds of trains and delaying flights.

The disruptions coincide with the biggest mass travel migration in the world as people across the country flock home to see their families for the Chinese New Year holiday, which officially begins on Saturday.

Over the past few days, videos across Chinese social media showed images of people stranded on trains and trapped in cars on snowy highways in several cities, including Jingzhou in the south of Hubei.

One driver was trapped in a car for three days, media outlet Yicai reported, and passengers heading for Wuhan, to the east of Jingzhou, were stuck on a train for hours after power was lost amid freezing temperatures, social media videos showed.

"This weather in Wuhan can drive you crazy, you have to walk 20,000 steps every day to get to work, and then you get home and the power goes out because the wires are down," one user complained on social media platform Weibo.

Hundreds of trains were delayed or suspended, and throngs of passengers stranded at railway stations in Wuhan, local media said. Runways at the Tianhe Airport in Wuhan were temporarily closed Tuesday, state media CCTV reported.

Photos from the China Meteorological Administration showed broken trees scattered across roads in Hunan, felled by freezing rain. In 10 provinces, about 129 sections of highways were closed, according to Beijing News.

At least two people have died in snow-related accidents. One person in Hubei and another from Hunan were killed as awnings in farmers markets collapsed under heavy snow, according to state media reports.

China's Ministry of Emergency Management and two other government departments sent 20,000 disaster relief supply items to Hunan, including thick quilts, according to the China Daily.

The severe weather is expected for another few days, according to China National Emergency Broadcasting. Several cities upgraded weather advisories and emergency response plans.

Provinces including Hubei are clearing ice off power lines, state media reported. Authorities in Hubei said they were clearing out tunnels and bridges, where thick ice has caused choke points.

The province has instructed hundreds of highway toll stations to enforce traffic control measures, including letting vehicles through for free.

China's ministry of finance and ministry of transport issued 141 million yuan ($19.6 million) to support 11 provinces and municipalities for highway snow and ice removal.

Over the past few days, videos across Chinese social media showed images of people stranded on trains and trapped in cars on snowy highways in several cities, including Jingzhou in the south of Hubei. One driver was trapped in a car for three days, media outlet Yicai reported, and passengers heading for Wuhan, to the east of Jingzhou, were stuck on a train for hours after power was lost amid freezing temperatures, social media videos showed. "This weather in Wuhan can drive you crazy, you have to walk 20,000 steps every day to get to work, and then you get home and the power goes out because the wires are down," one user complained on social media platform Weibo. Hundreds of trains were delayed or suspended, and throngs of passengers stranded at railway stations in Wuhan, local media said. Runways at the Tianhe Airport in Wuhan were temporarily closed Tuesday, state media CCTV reported. Photos from the China Meteorological Administration showed broken trees scattered across roads in Hunan, felled by freezing rain. In 10 provinces, about 129 sections of highways were closed, according to Beijing News. At least two people have died in snow-related accidents. One person in Hubei and another from Hunan were killed as awnings in farmers markets collapsed under heavy snow, according to state media reports. China's Ministry of Emergency Management and two other government departments sent 20,000 disaster relief supply items to Hunan, including thick quilts, according to the China Daily. The severe weather is expected for another few days, according to China National Emergency Broadcasting. Several cities upgraded weather advisories and emergency response plans. Provinces including Hubei are clearing ice off power lines, state media reported. Authorities in Hubei said they were clearing out tunnels and bridges, where thick ice has caused choke points. The province has instructed hundreds of highway toll stations to enforce traffic control measures, including letting vehicles through for free. China's ministry of finance and ministry of transport issued 141 million yuan ($19.6 million) to support 11 provinces and municipalities for highway snow and ice removal. China's Central Meteorological Observatory predicted more rain, snow and freezing weather in the south for the first half of this week, but said conditions would improve starting Thursday.

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu urged China to "intensify efforts" in sending more Chinese tourists, as a diplomatic row continued over derogatory remarks by Maldivian politicians against Indian PM Narendra Modi for promoting Lakshadweep as a destination for Indian tourists.&nbsp;

"China was our (Maldives') number one market pre-Covid, and it is my request that we intensify efforts for China to regain this position," Muizzu told the Maldives Business Forum in Fujian Province on Tuesday (Jan&nbsp; 9) during his official visit to China, as per an official readout.&nbsp;

His remarks came in the wake of Maldivian ministers' derogatory remarks against India which triggered sharp reactions from Indians to boycott the island country as a tourism destination.

Notably, there has been a slew of travel cancellations to the Maldives by Indian tourists following the diplomatic row where one of the sitting ministers of Muizzu's government passed unwelcome&nbsp;comments against Indian PM Modi.&nbsp;

During his Tuesday (Jan 9) address, the Maldivian president said, "China remains one of our closest allies and development partners."&nbsp;

He even went on to appreciate China's&nbsp;Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) projects launched in 2014 in the archipelago nation in the Indian Ocean.&nbsp;

Notably, Mariyam Shiuna, a sitting Maldives minister, made some derogatory comments about India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he visited Lakshadweep.&nbsp;

"Maldives Tour Operators and Travel Associations are reaching out to TAAI because we have a MoU with the Associations and the Ministry of Tourism there for working together. They are saying that this was not the opinion of everyone and this is an individual opinion."

With many Indian tourists calling for a boycott of Maldives as a travel destination, Mayal said that it is the common man of Maldives who is paying the price of the row that erupted&nbsp;after derogatory remarks made by a sitting minister.&nbsp;

Highlighting the impact of political statements, Mayal stated, "When something like this happens, when some politician speaks, it is always the common man that gets affected. Everyone wants good business. Who does not want business from other countries so that they can prosper?"&nbsp;

"When we go ahead and go very vocal about it that we will not support Maldives, which is also very rightly so, because the views have come from a sitting minister. So obviously we will react and the common man bears the brunt and not the ministers."&nbsp;

<h2>India's domestic tourism market emerging&nbsp;&nbsp;</h2>

Mayal said that India does not solely rely on Maldives for tourism.&nbsp;

She pointed out that India has been actively promoting domestic destinations, particularly in the post-COVID era, with emerging markets and improved infrastructure.

"Especially post-COVID we have been selling domestic destinations a lot and it has become an emerging market and our infrastructure has got the best... I think from many others. We have last-mile connectivity, good hotels coming up, Bed and Breakfast coming up, and trains and flights have come in."

"The only thing where we are lacking right now is inbound tourism, but even those numbers will come up once the government realises what they have to put into it," she added while indicating a positive outlook for the tourism sector within India.

<h2>Lakshadweep as a travel destination&nbsp;</h2>

While Mayal spoke on the growing interest in Lakshadweep she also mentioned the existing connectivity challenges.

"One has to understand that the connectivity is not so great right now. With one flight.. and you need permits to visit the islands. One does not need a permit to visit Andaman and Nicobar island but Lakhshwadeep has always been a protected area. For instance, Taj is opening two resorts there. So all the hotel chains are going to look into it. Airlines are looking at it now. If the PM wants us to do this, who is going to stop us?"

However, with the Prime Minister's visit to the region, she is anticipating that there will now be increased investment and development.

"If Lakshadweep&nbsp;is what they want to bring as an emerging, beautiful, and high-end destination, it is the right time to do it. We have anyway missed out on a lot of opportunities when our infrastructure was not good. But as it is getting better and better, there is an opportunity on how we can promote our own country," she said.&nbsp;

Mayal said that the peak season for Maldives tourism is from September to April.&nbsp;

She noted that while sentiments were hurt due to the derogatory comments, immediate cancellations were unlikely due to substantial cancellation charges and difficulties in obtaining refunds, just as was the case during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"During Covid, people were struggling to get refunds so people are not going to waste their money now," she added.&nbsp;

Amid the online campaign of boycott Maldives, flight and trip booking company EaseMyTrip in a significant step decided to suspend all Maldives flight bookings after derogatory remarks were made by some of Maldives' now suspended ministers against India following the recent visit to Lakshadweep by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Indian online travel company EaseMyTrip's&nbsp;co-founder and chief executive officer (CEO) Nishant Pitti, standing in support of India, took to social media X and said, “In solidarity with our nation, @EaseMyTrip has suspended all Maldives flight bookings.”

The travel company, EaseMyTrip, went one step further and started a visit Lakshadweep campaign with the hashtag #ChaloLakshadweep.&nbsp;

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for dense fog which has blanketed parts of north India in the past few days – especially Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh. 
 
“Dense Fog Advisory for Punjab, Haryana, Delhi Uttar Pradesh, north Rajasthan and north Madhya Pradesh: Be careful while driving or outing through any transport. Use fog lights while driving. Be in touch with airlines, railways, and state transport for your journey schedule," wrote the weather office on social media platform X. 
 
The national capital remained covered with a thick blanket of fog which led to a delay of more than a hundred flights as the visibility remained low in the national capital. The Delhi airport on Thursday (Dec 28) reported that nearly 134 domestic and international flights were delayed, and 35 international departures and 28 international arrivals remained affected. 
 
Meanwhile, there were delays in 43 domestic departures and 28 domestic arrivals on Friday (Dec 28). The New Delhi Railway Station also faced a similar situation when 22 trains were delayed which left passengers stranded in the biting cold.

A marginal improvement was reported in Delhi's air quality on Friday (Dec 29) as the average Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 356. Even though there was little improvement, the air quality continued to remain in the "very poor" category for the next two days. 
 
“The reason the fog situation saw some improvement on Thursday was due to overnight winds in several areas. The wind speed on Wednesday night reached up to 8 kmph, so the fog dissipated. However, on Friday the wind speed will drop,” said Kuldeep Srivastava, a scientist with India Meteorological Department (IMD), while speaking to The Times Of India. 
 
“We have issued the red warning for Friday, suggesting that the time between 4 am to 10 am could see accidents as visibility will be very low. So, unless it’s very essential, do not take out your vehicle at this time,” Srivastava added. Meanwhile, the IMF issued an orange alert for dense to moderate fog on Saturday (Dec 30).

<h2>Air quality likely to deteriorate further</h2>

The Met department on Thursday (Dec 28) released INSAT imagery in which a dense fog layer was seen over north India, which affected the regions in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and northwest Madhya Pradesh. 
 
The dense fog created low visibility conditions in these regions which led to traffic disruptions and accidents. Extending its warning, the IMD predicted dense fog over Punjab and Haryana for the next five days. 
 
For the next three days, Uttar Pradesh is likely to witness dense fog due to which guidelines have been issued by the UP State Road Transport Corporation for bus operations in low visibility conditions.

“Weather conditions are not favourable for effective dispersion of pollutants. Emissions from firecrackers if burnt on December 31 will further deteriorate air quality… The predominant surface wind is likely to be from the east-southeast direction in Delhi-NCR with a wind speed of 6-4 kmph with partly cloudy sky with dense to very dense fog at most places in the morning on December 29,” predicted the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology's air quality early warning system.

The blast occurred close to the embassy in the Chanakyapuri diplomatic enclave. Israeli nationals have been cautioned to steer clear of crowded places, including malls and markets.

Moreover, Israel also urged its citizens here to remain alert while visiting places serving Westerners, Jews, and Israelis.

Israeli embassy spokesperson Guy Nir reportedly confirmed the incident, stating that the blast occurred close to the embassy at around 5:48 pm. Nir added that the matter is being looked into.&nbsp;
