<p>On TikTok, the hashtag “gym weirdos” received over 1.9 million views, as videos showed men trying to flirt or harass women who were trying to complete their exercises unbothered.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One such TikTok detective is Gina Love. She visits the gym around four times a week because the endorphin boost helps counteract the daily stress.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Watch this creep come over to my personal bubble while doing (Romanian deadlifts),” wrote Love in the caption of a video she posted on TikTok which received more than 50,000 likes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&nbsp;“The gym was practically empty, and so many corners to be in and he chose this one," she added. In the video uploaded, the man is seen staring at Love from behind as she lifts dumbbells.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I would say I experience creeps 15% of the times I work out,” Love, who lives in Atlanta, said. “It’s almost like they’re trying to undress you in their heads,” she added.</p>

<p>Talking about inappropriate male gazing, she said, “It makes me feel disgusted, anxious and my survival instinct kicks in. I’ll typically cut my workout short because I can’t get back into feeling comfortable with that person around me.”&nbsp;</p>

There is also a possibility that videos that we see on TikTok as "viral" might not be actually trending earlier but made to trend by showing them continuously on your feed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Six current and former TikTok and ByteDance employees told Forbes that the social media platform and its parent company can use a feature called "heating" to choose which videos go viral.</p>

<p>"We promote some videos to help diversify the content experience and introduce celebrities and emerging creators to the TikTok community," a TikTok spokesperson said in a statement to Insider. "Only a few people, based in the US, have the ability to approve content for promotion in the US, and that content makes up approximately .002% of videos in For You feeds".&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to three sources and internal documents reviewed by Forbes, some employees abused the heating feature by boosting their personal accounts or the accounts of people they know, which is against the company policy.</p>

<p>TikTok and ByteDance employees could use the heating feature to "attract influencers," "promote diverse content," "push important information," and promote "relevant videos that were missed by the recommendations algorithms," as well, according to another document reviewed by Forbes. Two sources of Forbes told the publication that employees could decide on their own what content fits the guidelines.</p>

<p>As the company faces pressure from officials concerned that the app could be used as a tool for the Chinese government, ByteDance has faced increasing criticism in the past as well for giving access to its employees.</p>

<p>TikTok is currently blocked on government devices in at least 27 states in the US, as security concerns about the Chinese-owned app grow.</p>

<p>In yet another show of the misuse of China's ascendant tech prowess, Bytedance, the parent company of short-video social media app TikTok, hacked the TikTok accounts of two US-based journalists. ByteDance employees reportedly accessed the data of what is cited to be an unsuccessful effort to investigate leaks of company information earlier this year, according to an email from ByteDance general counsel Erich Andersen, Reuters reported.</p>

<p>The identity of the journalists has been revealed as Financial Times reporter Cristina Criddle and former Buzzfeed writer (now with Forbes) Emily Baker-White.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The disclosure is set to further the pressure on the Shenzen-based social media platform over security concerns about United States' user data, which have kept it in the news cycle over the past many months.</p>

<p><strong>Employees fired, apology issued</strong></p>

<p>About four ByteDance employees who were involved in the incident were fired, including two in China and two in the United States. Company officials quoted by Reuters said that they were taking additional steps to protect user data.</p>

<p>"This misconduct is not at all representative of what I know our company's principles to be," TikTok Chief Executive Shou Zi Chew said in a separate email to employees, Reuters reported.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He said the company "will continue to enhance these access protocols, which have already been significantly improved and hardened since this initiative took place."</p>

<p>The US Congress is set to pass legislation this week to ban government employees from downloading or using TikTok on their government-owned devices.</p>

<p>Chew said that over the past 15 months the company had been working to build TikTok U.S. Data Security (USDS) to ensure that protected TikTok U.S. user data stays in the U.S.</p>

<p>"The USDS department is limiting access of that data to the USDS department and has already done so across our production systems," he said. "We are completing the migration of protected US user data management to the USDS department and have been systematically cutting off access points."</p>

<p>The U.S. government Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), a national security body, has for months sought to reach a national security agreement with ByteDance to protect the data of more than 100 million U.S. TikTok users, but it appears no deal will be reached before year's end.</p>
