Amar ( STR) grows up to be Shakti’s closest aide, who takes the boy home and raises him as his own.&nbsp;Years later, Shakti ends up in jail, and Amar takes control of his empire and wants to make the business grow overseas.&nbsp; &nbsp;However, an incident turns Amar and Shakti against each other. While Shakti soon repents and wants to make amends, Amar is consumed by rage and seeks revenge and allies with rivals to bring his mentor down.&nbsp;Is Sakti able to save himself, and does Amar get to know details of his past- forms the rest of the story&nbsp;<h2>What works</h2>Expectations are always high from a film that features Kamal Haasan. Haasan plays a man, who holds his loved ones close and is ruthless to his enemies, delivering a convincing act. It isn’t Haasan’s best performance but credit should be given to the man for still being so agile and relevant at 70. The scene stealer, however, is STR, who delivers a strong performance as Amar- a loyal aide to Sakti but who feels he has been betrayed by his mentor.&nbsp; &nbsp;Ratnam’s frequent collaborator Ravi K Chandran shoots the film beautifully, and some of the panoramic shots are stunning.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2>What does not</h2>The film is terribly formulaic. At a time when Hindi films are relying heavily on south-inspired action thrillers, one had hoped Ratnam and Haasan would be able to change the narrative. Simbu, dressed in white pants and a blue shirt, is shown tied on a dusty floor. But as he escapes, not a strand is out of his carefully made man bun, nor are there any creases on his clothes or a spec of dust. Unbelievable. &nbsp;These flaws could be overlooked, if the plot was more solid. Almost at the beginning of the second half, you know how the film will pan out. The plot truly is wafer-thin, which only wants to make Haasan look like a superhero. As a result, a lot of the actors are wasted. Abhirami holds her own as Jeeva, Shakti’s wife. Trisha is wasted, so are Ali Fazal and Mahesh Manjrekar, who only have two scenes in total. Even STR fades away in the middle of the second half, only to reappear near the climax.&nbsp;&nbsp;The women in Mani Ratnam's films are usually so well presented and often play an integral part of the story. They are usually strong individuals. However, in Thug Life, they are all shown to be dependent on the men. Be the mistress, who moves from one man to another's house and has no identity of herself, the wife who rallies around the husband and only worries of his well being, to the daughter who needs consent of the father, or the ex wife who needs father-in-law to get a divorce from the husband. The women are never on their own.&nbsp;<h2>Final verdict</h2>Thug Life is not a bad film, per se. However, it’s a film that reunites two legends of Indian cinema, so one would hope for something extraordinary, given their past work. Thug Life unfortunately falls into the usual trappings of a masala potboiler and never elevates itself to be something marvelous. It's a cinematic version of Mirzapur, where everyone is eyeing the hot seat and thus, trying to outdo the other person. And because most of us have watched the web series, Thug Life doesn't offer us anything new.&nbsp;&nbsp;Thug Life has been released in theatres across the country on June 5.&nbsp;

Mani Ratnam’s next film Thug Life is finally taking shape. The film has roped in Kamal Haasan and Ali Fazal in pivotal roles. The film will be shot by Ravi K Chandran while the music will be composed by AR Rahman. Ali Fazal in Mani Ratnam's next This would be the first full-fledged role for Ali Fazal in the South Indian film industry alongside Kamal Haasan. The cast also includes Trisha Krishnan, Dulquer Salmaan, Jayam Ravi, Silambarasan Rajendar, Joju George, Gautham Kartik and Aishwarya Lekshmi. Details of their characters have been kept under wraps for now. And I can only hope I bring something of significance to this canvas. It's also an honour to work alongside Kamal Haasan sir and share notes with him on this. The opportunity to collaborate with two stalwarts of Indian cinema has been humbling. I am deeply grateful to Mani Sir for entrusting me with this role and am eager to bring it to life on screen.” The film falls under the bracket of the gangster genre and is written by Ratnam and Haasan and produced by Raaj Kamal Films International, Madras Talkies and Red Giant Movies. Haasan, Ratnam, R. Mahendran and Siva Ananth serve as producers. Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam previously collaborated on Nayakan in 1987. The film was a massive blockbuster and was the country’s entry to the 1988 Oscars.

In a much-anticipated reunion, the legendary actor Kamal Haasan and acclaimed filmmaker Mani Ratnam have come together for a new cinematic venture, marking their first collaboration in 36 years. The dynamic duo revealed the title of their upcoming project on the eve of Kamal Haasan's birthday, sending ripples of excitement through the film industry and among their ardent fans.

Kamal took to social media to announce the title of his latest cinematic masterpiece in collaboration with Mani Ratnam.&nbsp;The last time they joined forces was in 1987 for the cult epic crime film Nayakan.

In the promo video of Thug Life, a lone figure is seen standing in the middle of a barren, misty land. Covered in a rustic cloak, he is seen staring at five men who are standing at a distance, holding various weapons, ready to charge at him. The camera then turns to Kamal's face, showcasing him with a thick moustache and beard.

As the men approach him, he lets go of the cloak, revealing his long salt and pepper locks.&nbsp;What follows is a mesmerising display of skill and finesse as he systematically takes down his enemies. With a triumphant smile, he dons his cloak once again, and the title of the film, Thug Life, is unveiled.

Thug Life is set to be co-produced by Raaj Kamal Films International and Madras Talkies, combining the creative genius of Kamal and Mani. The film boasts an ensemble cast, including Jayam Ravi, Trisha, Dulquer Salmaan, Abhirami, and Nasser.

Mani Ratnam, known for his visual storytelling, has assembled his frequent collaborators for Thug Life, including renowned cinematographer Ravi K. Chandran, editor Sreekar Prasad, and music composer extraordinaire AR Rahman.&nbsp;

Apart from Thug Life, Kamal is set to reprise the iconic role of Senapathy in Indian 2, which&nbsp;is scheduled for release in cinemas on April 12, 2024, and features a stellar cast, including Kajal Aggarwal, Siddharth, and Rakul Preet Singh.
