<p>“On our North American tour, we will be partnering with Everytown who work to end gun violence, donating to support their efforts, and sharing their suggested action items," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Suggesting ways to improve security in schools, Trump said that every school should have a single point of entry, strong fencing, and metal detectors, adding there should also be a police official or an armed guard at all times in every school.</p>

<p>According to the earlier statements, the 18-year-old gunman was said to have been confronted by a police officer. Officials with the Texas Department of Public Safety had said that the shooter encountered a police officer employed by the school district before charging through a back door.</p>

<p>But now it has been revealed that the gunman roamed outside the Uvalde school for 12 minutes before entering unchallenged, police said on Thursday, contracting the earlier claims.</p>

<p>"He walked in unobstructed initially," Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Regional Director Victor Escalon was quoted as saying by CNN.</p>

<p>"So from the grandmother's house, to the (ditch), to the school, into the school, he was not confronted by anybody."</p>

<p>Escalon made these comments at a news conference to give details on the timeline of Tuesday's horrific shooting that left 19 children and two teachers dead.</p>

<p>There has been a massive public outcry over the police’s response to the shooter. Parents have criticised the state law enforcement officials of not only acting quickly to stop the gunman, but also giving vague and conflicting answers on what exactly happened after the shooter arrived at the school.</p>

<p>It has also called into question the claims made by state Governor Greg Abbott, who earlier hailed the "quick response" of "valiant local officials", saying that police had engaged the gunman before he entered the school.</p>

<p>"They showed amazing courage by running toward gunfire," he said.</p>

<p>Escalon said 18-year-old Salvador Ramos crashed his vehicle nearby at 11:28, with the first emergency call coming two minutes later as witnesses reported a man carrying a gun. Ramos then shot at members of the public, roamed the school premises, and entered freely through an unlocked door at 11:40.</p>

<p>Police arrived on site four minutes later, Escalon said. But it is unclear how close they got to the gunman or whether they attempted to enter the classroom where the shooting took place.</p>

<p>A mother told the Wall Street Journal that she was briefly handcuffed and accused of impeding a police investigation, after demanding - along with other parents - that officers enter the school.</p>

<p>The assistant &nbsp;Salvador Ramos drove a pickup truck into the school and was reportedly wearing a tactical vest and carrying an assault rifle as he&nbsp;began shooting at around 11:30am.</p>

<p>Gun rights advocates say the adoption of so far-reaching a law in Texas, long considered a bellwether of gun rights legislation, could encourage similar conservative legislation in other states. Critics, including some senior law enforcement officers, call the new legislation a dangerous retreat from gun control amid a recent surge in gun violence, particularly in a state with a long and painfully recent history of mass shootings.</p>

<p>The new legislation was meant to “protect the right of law-abiding Texans to carry a handgun as they exercise their God-given right to self-defense and the defense of their families,” said Charles Schwertner, the Republican state senator who sponsored the bill, which cleared the Senate on Monday.</p>

<p>Abbott described the bill on Twitter as “the strongest Second Amendment legislation in Texas history,” and was expected to sign the measure within days, as soon as it could be slotted into his schedule, said Renae Eze, his press secretary.</p>

<p>Texas already has some of the least-restrictive gun laws in the nation: Residents have long been able to carry rifles in public without a permit, for example, and few states have gone as far as Texas in allowing guns on college campuses, a law the state passed in 2015.</p>

<p>But it maintained certain strict licensing standards for handguns, including requirements for a four- to six-hour training course, a written exam and a shooting proficiency demonstration, all of which will be eliminated if the governor signs the new legislation into law.</p>

<p>“People who had never held a gun in their lives would be legally authorized to carry those guns almost everywhere,” said Ari Freilich, a state policy director with the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.</p>

<p>The new legislation essentially extends the permissions available to carriers of rifles to handguns. It also removes the requirement that handguns be kept in a belt or a shoulder harness, but they must be in a holster.</p>

<p>People with criminal histories that would bar them from owning a handgun under federal law would still be barred from carrying a weapon. And the measure requires the Texas Department of Public Safety to offer a free online course on gun safety.</p>

<p>Versions of such a law had been proposed periodically over the last decade but had not garnered much support, and the idea of “constitutional carry” was largely dismissed as a remote dream of the far right. But the 2020 election changed all that, several analysts said, as the Republican Party in the state shifted further right and moderate legislators feared being outflanked by hard-core conservatives.</p>

<p>“Clearly the political terrain has changed,” said James Henson, director of the Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas. The new legislation, he said, “is a big hit among the far-right wing of the party, and those are the voters that the legislators have their eyes on.”</p>

<p>It is a marked change from the fall of 2019, when after a series of mass shootings in El Paso, Odessa and elsewhere, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said on Fox News that he was “willing to take an arrow” as he pushed back against the National Rifle Association and joined calls for strengthened background checks. <p>There have not been signs of strong public support for a substantial easing of gun licensing requirements. In a recent poll conducted by the University of Texas and The Texas Tribune, nearly 60% of voters said adults should not be allowed to carry a gun without a permit or license.</p>

<p>The measure passed over the objections of numerous senior law enforcement officers who warned that removing restrictions on carrying handguns would impede their efforts to quell gun violence.</p>

<p>Handguns have long been a central component of violent crime in urban American, and Texas has three of the country’s largest cities, Houston, San Antonio and Dallas. The number of murders spiked in major Texas cities in 2020: There were more than 397 deaths in Houston, up from 289 the year before; Dallas had 245 deaths, up from 199; and Fort Worth saw deaths through November climb to 102 from 62, according to an independent tally of police statistics.</p>

<p>Douglas Griffith, president of the Houston Police Officers’ Union, said the number of guns owned by Texans was not the concern. “Honestly, we’re in Texas — everybody and their brother has a gun,” Griffith said.</p>

<p>But he said eliminating the training required under existing law was inadvisable. “Now you are going to have a bunch of untrained individuals out there,” he said. “That makes me fearful for our community.”</p>

<p>Ed Gonzalez, the sheriff in Harris County, the most populous region of the state, warned that the new rules could return the state to the days of the wild West.</p>

<p>“Permitless carry does not make our community safer,” said Gonzalez, who has been nominated by President Joe Biden to head Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “Instead it increases the odds of deadly confrontation and puts the lives of first responders at even greater risk.”</p>

<p>Most Democratic lawmakers also objected to the changes in the law.</p>

<p>Rep. Joe Moody, a Democrat who represents El Paso, where a shooting at a Walmart in 2019 killed 23 people, pleaded with fellow legislators during the debate over the measure. He warned that the law could spread further violence in Texas.</p>

<p>“One day, a tragedy will come to your community,” he said. “I pray that it doesn’t.”</p>

But law enforcement experts say identifying and stopping extremists online is easier said than done, given free speech protections and censorship concerns.</p>

<p>The White House declined to comment on who took part or led Friday's closed-door meeting. Trump did not attend, having travelled to New York on Friday for fundraisers ahead of a planned vacation at his golf course in New Jersey.</p>

<p>"The conversation focused on how technology can be leveraged to identify potential threats, to provide help to individuals exhibiting potentially violent behaviour and to combat domestic terror," White House spokesman Judd Deere said in a statement.</p>

<p>"We urge internet and social media companies to continue their efforts in addressing violent extremism and helping individuals at risk, and to do so without compromising free speech," Deere said.</p>

<p>The Washington Post reported Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit were invited to the meeting. The companies declined to comment.</p>

<p>Their lobby group, the Internet Association, said the meeting was productive and that the companies talked about how they fight extremism online.</p>

<p>The document charging Patrick Crusius, of Allen, Texas, with murder also described the circumstances of his arrest, saying he stepped out of his vehicle when surrounded by police, put his hands up and said "I'm the shooter."</p>

<p>At police headquarters, Crusius waived his right to remain silent or have a lawyer present and told detectives that "his target (was) 'Mexicans,'" according to the document, obtained by The Washington Post and others.</p>

<p>Prior to carrying out the attack Saturday, Crusius published a white supremacist manifesto online which expressed fears of a "Hispanic invasion" of Texas.</p>

<p>Eight of the people killed in the rampage were Mexican nationals and many of the other victims were Americans of Hispanic origin.</p>

<p>In the manifesto, Crusius claimed he was "defending" the United States "from cultural and ethnic replacement brought on by an invasion" and made references to the Christchurch shootings in New Zealand, where a white gunman killed 51 worshippers at two mosques in March.</p>

<p>El Paso is about a nine-hour drive from Allen, where Crusius lived, and he apparently deliberately selected the city because of its heavily Hispanic population.</p>

<p>El Paso lies on the Rio Grande River which marks the US border with Mexico. It has a population of 680,000, of which 83 percent are of Hispanic descent.</p>
