In a first, Tesla factory workers based in California will be counted as 'essential workers' and will be exempted from new coronavirus restrictions in the state.

The decision has been taken as the state is inching towards new coronavirus restrictions, which will be initiated from this weekend. The authorities let the Tesla workers be exempted as earlier Elon Musk had argued that manufacturing is listed as an essential workforce.

"The limited stay-at-home order does not apply to employees deemed essential workers — manufacturing is listed as an essential workforce," said California's Department of Public Health, specifying in particular transport products and equipment.

The exemption has been granted on the condition that Musk's factories will ensure all necessary health guidelines and will make sure the employees are provided all the basic precautions and facilities needed to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Elon Musk, during the last lockdown, had argued about shutting down his factory and had even threatened to move his headquarters and all other future projects to Texas or Nevada.

In the end of the feud, Musk had, once again, won the argument with the state having to admit that manufacturing has been listed as an essential workforce, which automatically exempts Musk's employees from all lockdowns.

The 10:00 pm to 5:00 am stay-at-home order, apart from essential activities, will take effect Saturday evening and remain in force through December 21. Some 94 per cent of the population is affected by the curfew, including residents of Alameda, where the electric car manufacturer's plant is located.

What started as an April Fools'Day joke by Tesla owner Elon Musk is now a reality, and a very pricey one. After automobiles, internet services and space programmes, Elon Musk has launched his own brand of tequila called Teslaquilla.

In 2018, Musk played an April Fools' Day prank on his fans by posting a picture of himself sitting on the floor leaning on a Tesla car with the caption, "Tesla Goes Bankrupt"

"Elon was found passed out against a Tesla Model 3, surrounded by "Teslaquilla" bottles, the tracks of dried tears still visible on his cheeks," the tweet read. "This is not a forward-looking statement, because, obviously, what's the point?"

The tweet sent fits of laughter across the social media platform. Later that year, Tesla filed an application with the US Patent and Trademark Office and got the word 'Teslaquilla' trademarked for the company. Two years later, the company has jow launched a tequila bottle in the shape of a lightning bolt and costs $250 per bottle.

The tequila is being defined as a "small-batch premium 100% de agave tequila añejo made from sustainably sourced highland and lowland agaves" on Tesla's official website. Officials claim this añejo, which typically from one to three years in oak, was aged for 15 months. The orders for this are limited to two bottles per person, as of now. The orders are no yet open for worldwide distribution due to industry regulations; only a few states in the US have permission to sell the new and pricey bottle of tequila.

After launching the expensive and much-awaited bottle, Musk replied to his own tweet from April 2018 as a form of the formal announcement on the social media platform.

Tesla Inc. asked the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for approval to market a short-range interactive motion-sensing device that could help prevent children from being left behind in hot cars and boost theft-prevention systems.

The California automaker wants permission to use unlicensed millimeter-wave sensors that would operate at higher power levels than allowed under existing rules.

Tesla’s device would utilize four transmit and three receive antennas driven by a radar front-end unit. Tesla says millimeter wave radar technology has advantages over other sensing systems like camera-based or in-seat occupant detection systems.

The radar-based system “provides depth perception and can ‘see’ through soft materials, such as a blanket covering a child in a child restraint.”

Tesla added it “can differentiate between a child and an object left on the seat, reducing the likelihood of false alarms” and can detect “micromovements like breathing patterns and heart rates, neither of which can be captured by cameras or in-seat sensors alone.”

Radar imaging, Tesla adds, can assess body size to optimize airbag deployment in a crash depending on whether an adult or child is seated, which it says would be more effective than existing weight-based, in-seat sensor systems.

It would also more accurately determine when to engage seat belt reminders.

The FCC is seeking public comment on Tesla’s request through September 21.

Tesla notes the FCC in 2018 granted a similar request for a device of Alphabet Inc’s Google that works under identical operating parameters.

Valeo North America submitted a request in March to the FCC for its in-vehicle safety-related monitoring device that would also detect children in cars. The request is pending.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says more than 50 children died when left behind in hot cars in both 2019 and 2018. Of those incidents, 54% occurred because someone forgot a child.

A German court on Tuesday has ruled that specific terms used by electric car company Tesla for its assistance feature including the 'Autopilot' are false advertisement.

A German court on Tuesday has ruled that specific terms used by electric car company Tesla for its assistance feature including the 'Autopilot' are false advertisement. The judges at the higher state court in Munich said that Tesla's offer on 'Autopilot' as an option to buy a Model 3 vehicle with "full potential for autonomous driving" were "misleading business acts". In a statement, the court said: "Use of the relevant terms creates an expectation... that does not correspond to the actual facts." According to the judge's findings, Tesla's "Autopilot" does not enable a trip without any human intervention at all such a technology be legal under present German law. The case was brought up by an NGO called the Centre for Combatting Unfair Competition that said Tesla's autonomous driving technology at best reaches level two on a five-point scale in which five corresponds to completely driverless travel. "Since auto-piloted, autonomous driving is neither legally permitted nor technically possible for the vehicle in question, Tesla has to play by the rules and cannot make false advertising promises," the centre's lawyer Andreas Ottofuelling said in a statement. However, the court's ruling is not final and it can be appealed. (Inputs from AFP)

Tesla CEO Elon Musk speaking through a video link at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in China said today that his company is "very close" to achieving autonomous driving technology while asserting that it could be achieved this year.

"I'm extremely confident that level 5 or essentially complete autonomy will happen and I think will happen very quickly," Musk said during the conference through video conferencing. "I remain confident that we will have the basic functionality for level 5 autonomy complete this year."

Level 5 means a car's computer will do the driving with no intervention of the driver as passengers enjoy their ride. The US transport department currently has a "light-touch regulatory approach" towards self-driving cars but the sale of level 4 and 5 would need updated guidelines, experts say.

During the conference, Musk spoke about work at Shanghai's Gigafactory which is Tesla's first production facility outside the US for the company's Model 3 and Model Y cars while reiterating that he would like to visit the plant.

“I think there are no fundamental challenges remaining for Level 5 autonomy. There are many small problems. And then there’s the challenge of solving all those small problems and then putting the whole system together and just keep addressing the long tail of problems. So you’ll find that you’re able to handle the vast majority of situations," the Tesla chief said.

The Tesla chief's comments come as several companies have invested heavily into the self-driving technology including Lyft, Alphabet’s Waymo, General Motor’s and Uber Technologies. Most companies are still in testing mode with customers still not ready to trust the technology after reports of crashes which have taken around the world including Tesla's Model S fatal crash in May 2016.

"But then there will be something very odd. You have to have a system figure out a train to deal with these odd situations. This is why you need real-world situations. Nothing is more complex and weird than the real world,” the Tesla chief stated.

"We are deeply enmeshed in dealing with the tiny details of level five simulation," Musk added.

Tesla Inc is building “RNA microfactories” for coronavirus vaccine developer CureVac in Germany, the electric carmaker’s chief executive officer, Elon Musk, tweeted on Wednesday.

CureVac, an unlisted German company, has said it is developing transportable, automated mRNA production units that it calls printers. They will be designed to be shipped to remote locations, where they can churn out its vaccine candidate and other mRNA-based therapies depending on the recipe fed into the machine.

But for the immediate pandemic use - should its vaccine candidate win market approval – it has production sites with regulatory approval in Germany with a capacity to produce hundreds of millions of doses.

It is also building a new stationary site that could increase its output tenfold to billions of doses.

Musk did not elaborate on his plans. Tesla and CureVac were not immediately available to comment.

Tesla's shares rose about 6% to hit $1,000 on Wednesday after Reuters reported Musk's email, making the Silicon Valley company the second-most valuable automaker in the world, behind Japan's Toyota Motor Corp . Tesla's share surge could position Musk for another payout from a stock compensation plan tied to the company's market capitalization.

The stock also got a boost from a bullish call by Wedbush, which lifted its target price for the automaker to $1,000 and said Tesla could have "more room to run."

Investors also are anticipating Musk will unveil new "million-mile" battery technology that could deliver longer life, lower costs and better range for future Tesla vehicles.

"Production of the battery and powertrain will take place at Giga Nevada," Musk wrote. Most of the other work will probably take place in other states, he wrote, without stating where.

Musk has said Tesla is scouting other U.S. states for a site to build a new factory, hinting that Texas could be a candidate. Oklahoma and other states are campaigning for the investment.

When Musk unveiled the prototype of the futuristic, battery-powered Semi in 2017, he said the Class 8 truck would go into production by 2019. More recently, he said the Semi would go into volume production by 2021.

Musk's Tuesday message coincides with a surge in the share price of rival clean truck maker Nikola Corp.

Nikola, an electric and fuel cell truck startup, earlier this month began trading on the NASDAQ after it merged with special purpose acquisition company VectoIQ.

Shares in Nikola have more than doubled in price over the past week as the company's CEO has used Twitter and interviews to promote plans to launch an electric pickup truck to Tesla's forthcoming Cybertruck.

Nikola and CNH Industrial's IVECO commercial truck operation last year formed a joint venture to build a battery electric and fuel cell truck line called the Nikola Tre. IVECO has said orders are strong for the electric version of the truck, due out next year.

Nikola on Wednesday said it had hired a former Tesla executive, Mark Duchesne, to lead its manufacturing and a former Caterpillar <CAT.N> executive, Pablo Koziner, to head its hydrogen fueling and battery recharging business.

Elon Musk feels it's 'time to break up Amazon'; tweets to Jeff Bezos

Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Thursday unveiled the first of 12 possible stock option awards from the compensation plan he signed in 2018 -- and it’s worth nearly $800 million.

This plan replaced one from 2012.

Tesla eclipsed $20 billion in total revenue over the last four quarters and a market capitalisation of more than $100 billion. Hence, the company disclosed, Musk now has the option to buy 1.69 million of its shares.

Tesla’s stock price was $805.81 when the markets closed on Thursday, meaning those shares are worth about $1.36 billion. Musk, however, only has to pay a $350.02 per share strike price to get them.

This implies he could net around $770 million depending on when he pulls the trigger.

At this rate, Musk can eventually wind up collecting around 20.3 million new shares of Tesla at that strike price, clearing a path for him to collect tens of billions of dollars or more.

The company originally categorised the compensation plan as an at-risk performance award that ensures Musk will be compensated only if Tesla and all of its shareholders do extraordinarily well.”

The company’s annual meeting this year will take place on July 7.

Shareholders will have seven proposals to vote on at that meeting. The first is to reelect Elon Musk and Tesla chairwoman Robyn Denholm to the board of directors, and to approve the recently-announced appointment of Hiromichi Mizuno. The second is to approve compensation for Tesla’s executives. The third is to reappoint PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP as Tesla’s auditor.

Proposal four is Tesla should start spending money on advertising — something Musk has famously avoided.

The fifth proposal is measuring votes by a simple majority.

Proposal six is for Tesla to scrap forced arbitration.

The final proposal is Tesla preparing a report about human rights violations at the companies it buys raw materials from.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and his girlfriend singer and musician Grimes have changed their baby's name.

Earlier this month, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Musk announced the birth of the baby boy in a post on Twitter, revealing his son was called "X Æ A-12 Musk."

However, speculation arose that the unusual moniker might fall foul of the law in California, where the couple live, as names can only use the 26 alphabetical characters of the English language, according to the state constitution.

The slight variation in the name was revealed by Grimes on her Instagram page on Sunday when a user asked her if she had changed her baby’s name because of California laws and what the new name was.

"X Æ A-Xii" wrote the singer in response, without confirming the reason for the change.

The singer also responded to another comment, saying: "Roman numerals. Looks better tbh."

Musk, who already has five sons from his previous marriage to author Justine Wilson, said that it was girlfriend and Canadian singer Grimes who had come up with the name for their son.

She had explained the meaning of each character of her baby's name in a Tweet.

Alameda County of California has put all the non-essential businesses on hold, including Tesla's Fremont factory. To which Musk threatened to move out his factory from California if not allowed to begin production. The County authorities had confirmed that negotiation with Elon Musk was being held, they said: "We continue to move closer to an agreed-upon safety plan for reopening beyond Minimum Basic Operations by working through steps that Tesla has agreed to adopt. These steps include improving employee health screening procedures and engaging front-line staff on their concerns and feedback regarding safety protocols."

Few in Trump administration have come in support of Musk, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told a local media channel that the State (California) authorities should work harder to reopen the local economy. Mnuchin went on to call Musk as one of the biggest employers and manufacturers in California and should prioritize to solve the issues so that Tesla could resume its operations.

Governor Gavin Newsom also supported Musk calling it "county-led enforcement". Musk responded to Newsom and thanked him via tweet.

Zuckerberg, on the other hand, in comments on Facebook’s earnings calls, expressed concerns about easing lockdown measure and said the economic fallout from the pandemic would last longer than people are currently anticipating.

“I worry that reopening certain places too quickly before infection rates have been reduced to very minimal levels will almost guarantee future outbreaks and worse longer-term health and economic outcomes,” he said.

Both companies are based in the San Francisco bay area, which was out front in trying to slow the virus’ spread, with the region’s seven counties issuing a joint shelter-in-place order before California issued a statewide order.

Electric carmaker tesla and social media network Facebook have had different experiences under the lockdown. Tesla had initially resisted efforts by California authorities to shut its plant in the bay area under the lockdown, until agreeing on march 19 to suspend production. Even so, tesla on Wednesday reported its third profitable quarter in a row.

Facebook, the world’s largest social network, on Wednesday said usage rose during the first quarter amid the widespread lockdowns, although ad revenue plunged in March.

Musk did not mince words in criticizing the lockdowns.

“So the extension of the shelter-in-place or, frankly, I would call it, forcibly imprisoning people in their homes against all their constitutional rights, in my opinion, breaking people’s freedoms in ways that are horrible and wrong and not why people came to America or built this country,” Musk said, swearing to underscore his point.

“It will cause great harm, not just to Tesla, but to any companies. And while Tesla will weather the storm, there are many small companies that will not,” he said.

Zuckerberg and Musk, who is also chief executive of rocket company SpaceX, have had differences in the past. In 2017, a war of words broke out between the duo over whether robots will become smart enough to kill their human creators.

“I’ve talked to Mark about this. His understanding of the subject is limited.” Musk tweeted at the time about Zuckerberg, who downplayed Musk’s warnings about the danger of artificial intelligence.

In May 2018, Musk made waves on another earnings call when he refused to analysts’ questions, saying that “boring, bonehead questions are not cool.” he later apologized for his remarks.
