Australian border agents held tennis superstar Novak Djokovic for eight hours at Melbourne airport, mostly incommunicado, before cancelling his visa and sending him to a detention centre, his lawyers said Saturday.

Djokovic secured a Covid-19 vaccine exemption from Tennis Australia and the Australian government because he had tested positive for the virus in December, which should have qualified him for entry, the lawyers argued.

"The date of the first positive Covid PCR test was recorded on 16 December 2021," his legal team said in a 32-page submission ahead of a federal court hearing Monday to appeal the visa decision.

Djokovic, who touched down in Melbourne on Wednesday night after a 25-hour trip via Dubai, had asked for a time to rest and consult his lawyers the following morning, his lawyers said.

But after a border official initially agreed, his superiors successfully pressured Djokovic to allow them to take an immediate decision on his visa, the lawyers said.

The tennis star has been held since Thursday morning in a Melbourne detention centre "notwithstanding his requests to be moved" to another facility to train for the Australian Open, they added.

Although Djokovic has won a legal reprieve from deportation, it is unclear whether he will play in the January 17-30 tournament.

Mostly incommunicado, border agents held Novak Djokovic for eight hours in Melbourne, says lawyers

Novak Djokovic has spent three days in immigration detention in a hotel in Melbourne after his visa was revoked on arrival in Australia ahead of the Australian Open. Djokovic, who has refused to reveal his COVID-19 vaccination status ahead of the tournament, had earlier this week announced that he was heading Down Under to play after being granted a 'medical exemption'.

However, the world no.1 tennis player's claim for medical exemption was rejected by the border officials in Melbourne on Wednesday night before he was placed in isolation in a hotel in Melbourne. Djokovic had last year expressed his reservations about taking part in the Australian Open this month as he had remained silent on his vaccination status.

The Australian Open rules state that all players who are to take part in the tournament along with the fans attending the matches should be vaccinated against coronavirus. However, those who are unvaccinated can obtain an exemption on the basis of medical grounds. The exemption can be granted only by an 'independent panel of medical experts'.

Djokovic and his legal team has claimed the tennis star had his medical exemption approved from two independent panels. Djokovic's lawyers revealed the tennis player had tested positive for COVID-19 in December last year and thus was eligible for a medical exemption as he could not have been vaccinated for at least the next six months after contracting the virus.

What are the circumstances based on which a medical exemption can be granted?

A medical exemption can be granted in the case of someone dealing with inflammatory cardiac illness in the last three months, or if someone has tested positive for COVID-19 in the last six months in which case the vaccine can't be administered, or if someone is undergoing major surgery, or if someone has suffered serious effects from COVID-19 vaccination in the past.

Those with mental and physical developmental disorders are also eligible to be exempted from the mandatory vaccination rules.

Why was Novak Djokovic granted a medical exemption?

Djokovic's lawyers on Saturday stated in their 35-page document lodged in the Federal court of Australia that the Serbian ace had tested positive for COVID-19 in December last year. The documents showed that he had tested positive on December 16 and was free of any symptoms for three days by December 30. He was thus granted a medical exemption on the basis that he had recently recovered from COVID-19 and was not eligible to get vaccinated for at least the next six months.

Djokovic's legal team have also presented proof of a letter that the tennis player had recieved from the Department of Home Affairs confirming that he met all the requirements for a quarantine-free arrival in Australia. However, his visa was torn apart upon arrival as his exemption was deemed invalid.

What next for Novak Djokovic in Australia?

Djokovic has decided to extend his stay in Australia and fight a legal battle against the authorities. He has challenged the decision to revoke his visa and is prepared to drag the authorities to the court to ensure he gets to defend his Australian Open title when the tournament gets underway from January 17.

Contrary to the claims that he has been held captive in a Melbourne hotel, the Australian government has maintained the Serbian player is free to leave the country at any point in time. However, it's Djokovic's decision to stay on and fight for what he believes is unfair against him as he had all pre-required approvals before travelling to the country.

The case is Djokovic V Minister for Home Affairs will be heard in court on Monday (January 10) as Djokovic's legal team continues its bid to challenge the decision to rekove the tennis star's visa despite him having 'valid visa' and 'medical exemption' - a letter from Tennis Australia`s Chief Medical Officer which permitted him entry into the country despite not being vaccinated against COVID-19.

Djokovic, a ten-time Australian Open champion is currently gunning for his 21st major title which will see him go past the legendary Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Djokovic is currently tied with Federer and Nadal, who have won 20 Grand Slams each.

There has been a lot happening in tennis ahead of the Australian Open 2022. Before the first Grand Slam of the calendar year, world number 1 Novak Djokovic has made the headlines for all the wrong reasons. The Serbian's apprehensions regarding the Covid-19 vaccination isn't unknown. As per the rules, every player has to be double vaccinated to participate in the Aus Open. Hence, Djokovic had announced earlier this week that he has got exemption to participate in the showpiece event.

However, the Serb was denied entry in Australia after the country's Prime Minister Scott Morrison revealed that his visa has been cancelled as 'rules are rules' for one and all. Thus, the 34-year-old superstar tennis player was taken to a government detention hotel, on Wednesday (January 5), after being stopped at the airport as the Australian Federal Border Force officials claimed that he wasn't able to justify the grounds for his exemption (granted by the Victorian government). Despite a legal action from Djokovic's end, the state lawyer Christopher Tran has made it clear that Australia won't deport him before a final court hearing, on Monday (January 10).

"I went through the COVID. I have been vaccinated twice. If you do this, you don't have any problem to play here. That's the only clear thing."

The 35-year-old Nadal further asserted, "The only for me clear thing is if you are vaccinated, you can play in the Australian Open and everywhere, and the world in my opinion have been suffering enough to not follow the rules."

'Feel sorry for him but he .....': Rafael Nadal opines on Novak Djokovic's Australian Open 2022 saga

Novak Djokovic has been trending on social media for the past two days the outrage and criticism have been pouring from the internet against the unfair medical exemption.

Novak Djokovic & controversial chain of events

World no.1 Novak Djokovic's detention by the Australian authorities has left his fans around the world angry and disappointed. Many have slammed the Australian government for the treatment rendered to the tennis superstar, who had headed Down Under in a bid to defend his title at the upcoming Australian Open 2022.

However, Djokovic's visa was revoked by the authorities in Melbourne and he was later sent to an immigration detention hotel. Djokovic, who has refused to reveal his COVID-19 vaccination status, had come to Australia after being granted a medical exemption.

However, his visa which was obtained on the grounds of the medical exemption was cancelled due to Australia's strict vaccination requirements. Djokovic, who had last year maintained he might not take part in the Australian Open due to the strict rules regarding players' vaccination, had earlier this week confirmed he was heading Down Under after being granted a medical exemption.

Serbian journalist Saša Ozmo, who works for Sport Klub Serbia shared his views on the raging controversy during an interaction with WION from Belgrade. Ozmo slammed the Australian government and authorities for the miscommunication and the unfair treatment handed out to the tennis star.

"I think it is a complete disgrace the way Australian authorities have treated him. Because it is absolutely not his fault, the miscommunication of the different levels of power in Australia between the state and the federal government, and tennis Australia," Ozmo told WION.

'It's a disgrace, absolutely not Novak's fault': Serbian journalist slams Australia for detaining Djokovic

Tennis world No. 1 Novak Djokovic was joined in Australian immigration detention by Czech women`s player Renata Voracova on Friday in a row over COVID-19 vaccines that could scupper the Serbian`s shot at a record-breaking 21st Grand Slam. Both players were kept at the modest Park Hotel in inner-city Melbourne, where scores of asylum seekers are also housed behind grey walls and locked windows.

Unlike Djokovic, whose determination to resist deportation and play in the Australian Open has rallied his homeland, 81st-ranked Voracova planned to leave after being caught in similar circumstances, the Czech Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"Renata Voracova decided to drop out of the tournament due to limited possibilities for training and to leave Australia," it said, adding that it had made a diplomatic protest and that several other players were caught in the same situation. Djokovic, who opposes mandatory vaccinations and was widely criticised in 2020 for hosting a tournament as the pandemic was first raging, was held at the airport on Wednesday. Authorities revoked a visa granted on the basis of a medical exemption from Australia`s strict vaccination requirements.

The Australian Border Force (ABF) said on Friday that one person had voluntarily left Australia while a third person`s visa had also been cancelled. It did not give names. The initial decision to grant Djokovic entry outraged many in Australia, which is battling its worst surge of infections and where the adult vaccination rate is more than 90%.

Canberra rejected on Friday suggestions by Serbian supporters, including Djokovic`s family, that he was a prisoner. "He is free to leave at any time that he chooses," Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews told reporters.

Djokovic`s lawyers won legal approval for him to remain until a full court hearing against the federal government on Monday. That should reveal more details about the exemption granted to Djokovic and the documentation he provided at the border to support it.
The Australian Open begins on Jan. 17, but the multi-millionaire superstar sportsman is constrained from training as he sits in a hotel where one Iranian detainee said he had found maggots and mould in the bread.

ANTI-VAXX HERO

Hailed as a hero online by anti-vaccination campaigners, Djokovic`s plight drew a mixed response from his peers.
Former World No. 1 Boris Becker, who has coached Djokovic, said he was making a big mistake with his anti-vaccination stance. "It is one that threatens what remains of his career and his chance to cement himself as the greatest player of all time," Becker wrote in the Daily Mail newspaper.

Spain`s Rafael Nadal, who like Djokovic has won 20 Grand Slams, said he felt sorry for his rival "but at the same time, he knew the conditions since a lot of months ago".

Australia`s Nick Kyrgios said he supported vaccination "but how we are handling Novak`s situation is bad, really bad".
Djokovic`s wife Jelena posted a photo of the couple embracing on a beach to mark Orthodox Christmas, saying: "The only law that we should all respect across every single border is love and respect for another human being".

Djokovic had received permission to enter Victoria without a vaccination from the state government, which however does not have the authority to issue visas to international visitors.

The Age newspaper reported that the exemption was because he had contracted COVID-19 in the past six months.
Tennis Australia and Victoria government officials said Djokovic had received no preferential treatment, adding that he was among a handful of approvals for exemptions in an anonymous and independent assessment of 26 applications.
Some critics say Prime Minister Scott Morrison is using the issue to boost his pandemic-fighting credentials with an election looming, which the government denies.

The Professional Tennis Players Association, a breakaway group launched by Djokovic, said they were in contact with him.
"Djokovic has verified his wellbeing to us," the group said in a statement. "He has also requested that we allow him to personally share the facts of his detainment in his own words, and in his own time."

Czech player Renata Voracova joins Novak Djokovic at Australian immigration hotel after visa cancellation

Novak Djokovic has received support from one of his fiercest critics with Nick Kyrgios criticizing the way the world number one has been treated in Australia and saying authorities must do better for "one of our great champions".

Djokovic, who has won a record nine Australian Open titles, was detained at the Melbourne airport on Wednesday evening and his entry visa, supported by an medical exemption from the country`s vaccination requirements, was revoked. Federal Border Force officials at the airport said Djokovic was unable to justify the grounds for his exemption.

Chasing a men`s record 21st Grand Slam, Djokovic is holed up in immigration detention as his lawyers battle to secure his release to play in the Australian Open and be exempt from strict COVID-19 vaccination requirements.
Kyrgios, who labelled Djokovic a "tool" after the Serb sought to improve quarantine conditions for players ahead of last year`s Grand Slam, said the situation had been handled poorly.

"Look I definitely believe in taking action, I got vaccinated because of others and for my mum`s health, but how we are handling Novak`s situation is bad, really bad," tweeted Kyrgios.
"Like these memes, headlines, this is one of our great champions but at the end of the day, he is human. Do better."
American player John Isner said Djokovic had followed all rules and did not deserve to be treated this way.

"What Novak is going through right now is not right," Isner said on Twitter. "There`s no justification for the treatment he`s receiving ... This is such a shame." Former U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic hoped the situation would be quickly resolved and that the whole episode was not good for the sport.

"Definitely it`s not a great picture for tennis," Cilic told reporters in Adelaide on Friday. The Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), the breakaway players` body launched by Djokovic in 2020, said in a statement that they were in close contact with him.

"Djokovic has verified his well-being to us," the PTPA said in a statement. "He has also requested that we allow him to personally share the facts of his detainment in his own words, and in his own time."

Djokovic has consistently refused to disclose his vaccination status while publicly criticising mandatory vaccines. Rafa Nadal, who is also in the hunt for a 21st Grand Slam title at Melbourne Park, was among those who pointed out the Serb knew for months he could potentially face problems if he arrived without being vaccinated against COVID-19.

German tennis great Boris Becker, who coached Djokovic to six majors, urged him to get vaccinated.
"As his former coach I am so close to Novak Djokovic that I would almost regard him as family -- but like in all families you sometimes have disagreements," Becker wrote in a Daily Mail column.

"And on this occasion I think he is making a big mistake in not getting vaccinated. It is one that threatens what remains of his career and his chance to cement himself as the greatest player of all time."
Becker was, however, unsure if Djokovic would change his mind.

"The same incredible determination which I saw win so many close matches can be a vulnerability with his stubbornness," Becker added. "Will Novak take that step? I am not sure that he will.
"He is incredibly strong-willed, with very firm beliefs. If he does not, then in 10 years he will look back on it and realise he made a mistake."

Nick Kyrgios reacts to Novak Djokovic's treatment, says Australia must 'do better'

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison turned commentator during the third day's play of the ongoing fourth Ashes Test between Australia and England at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney on Friday (January 07). Morrison was spotted in the commentary box with the likes of former Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist and former England cricketer Isa Guha.

Morrison's surprise presence at the commentary box during the 4th Ashes Test hasn't gone down well with some fans of tennis star Novak Djokovic. Amid raging controversy over Djokovic's detention in Melbourne, Morrison's actions have invited criticism yet again on social media.

World no.1 Djokovic's visa was cancelled upon his arrival in Australia on Thursday ahead of the Australian Open tournament. Djokovic had announced he was heading Down Under to defend his Australian Open title after being granted a medical exemption as he had refused to reveal his COVID-19 vaccination status.

However, the strict COVID-19 guidelines and the vaccination rules in Australia meant the tennis star was detained. It is not known on what grounds was Djokovic handed a medical exemption as the tennis star prepares to fight a legal battle in Australia.

The Australian government had earlier stressed that the players taking part in the Australian Open should all be double vaccinated as the country continues to deal with rapid surging cases of COVID-19 and lockdowns across the nation.

Why was Scott Morrison in the commentary box during the 4th Ashes Test?

Morrison graced the commentary box on Day 3 of the 4th Ashes Test between England and Australia to lend his support towards the McGrath Foundation - an initiative by former Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath which works for breast cancer patients in the country.

The Aussie Prime Minister announced a $40m grant for the McGrath Foundation and said the government will continue to do its bit to support the initiative. “This is about an Australian effort here; the government will do its bit. But the reason the McGrath foundation is so successful is Australians do their bit,” he said.

Amid Djokovic's detention controversy, Aussie PM Scott Morrison turns commentator during Ashes - WATCH

Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic's visa was cancelled upon arrival in Australia on Thursday (January 06) before he was sent into detention by the authorities. Djokovic had arrived Down Under to take part in the Australian Open tournament after obtaining a medical exemption as he has refused to reveal his COVID-19 vaccination status.

Djokovic had earlier maintained that his participation in the Australian Open remained uncertain due to the country's strict guidelines regarding players' vaccination status. However, the world no.1 had earlier this week taken to social media to confirm that he will be defending his Australian Open title after being granted a medical exemption.

Djokovic was denied entry into the country and sent into detention on his arrival at the Melbourne airport. While the 34-year-old had not disclosed the grounds of his medical exemption, he has refused to reveal details of his vaccination status. As the tennis star prepares for a legal battle in Australia after being detained, social media has mixed reactions to the whole saga.

While Djokovic's fans from around the globe have come together to criticise the Australian government for 'unfairly' treating the world no.1 tennis star, others have been having fun at his expense. Social media was flooded with memes depicting the lighter side of the controversy.

Tennis Australia is yet to release an official statement in the matter with the tournament set to get underway from January 17.

'Was short-lived but thanks for meme-ories': Novak Djokovic's Australian Open saga leads to meme fest

Tennis world number one Novak Djokovic spent Orthodox Christmas in Australian immigration detention on Friday as his lawyers fight a government decision to remove him from the country that could scupper his shot at a record-breaking 21st Grand Slam.

As the row escalated, officials said two other players who entered the country under the same exemption initially granted to Djokovic were under investigation. Border officials detained Djokovic at Melbourne`s airport when he arrived on Wednesday evening and revoked the visa he had been granted on the basis of a medical exemption from Australia`s strict COVID-19 vaccination requirements.

The initial decision to grant entry to Djokovic was met with outrage in Australia, a country with an adult vaccination rate of more than 90% that is battling its worst surge of coronavirus infections.

The Australian government pushed back on Friday against suggestions by Serbian supporters, including Djokovic`s family, that the star player was effectively a prisoner, stressing he is free to leave the country at any time.

"Mr Djokovic is not being held captive in Australia, he is free to leave at any time that he chooses to do so and Border Force will actually facilitate that," Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews told reporters.

Djokovic`s lawyers successfully scrambled for urgent legal approval for him to remain in the country until a full court hearing in his case against the federal government on Monday.

The public hearing is expected to reveal more details about the exemption granted to Djokovic and the documentation he provided to immigration officials at the border to support it.

The 34-year-old has not revealed the grounds for the exemption and has consistently refused to disclose his vaccination status, while publicly criticising mandatory vaccines. Vaccines are not mandatory in Australia but they are required for a range of activities.

As he was confined for a second day to his room in the modest Park Hotel, where several Afghan immigration detainees have been held for months, Djokovic`s plight was met with a mixed response from his rivals in elite tennis.
Former World number one and two-time Australian Open champion Boris Becker said Djokovic was "making a big mistake" with his anti-vaccination stance.

"It is one that threatens what remains of his career and his chance to cement himself as the greatest player of all time," Becker wrote in an opinion piece in The Daily Mail newspaper.

Spanish champion Rafael Nadal told reporters in Melbourne he felt sorry for his rival "but at the same time, he knew the conditions since a lot of months ago." However, American tennis player Tennys Sandgren sent his support.
"Novak, stay strong, buddy," Sandgren told Reuters. "Hope you get out of there soon." Australia`s Nick Kyrgios said he believed in vaccination "but how we are handling Novak`s situation is bad, really bad."

Djokovic`s wife, Jelena, posted a photo on Instagram of the couple embracing on a beach to mark Orthodox Christmas, saying "the only law that we should all respect across every single border is love and respect for another human being."

His family held an emotional news conference at his restaurant in Belgrade on Thursday before protesting in front of parliament, with his father Srdjan saying "they are stomping all over Novak to stomp all over Serbia."
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic accused the Australian government of harassment and persecution, allegations rejected by Canberra.

POLITICAL ROW

Some critics say Prime Minister Scott Morrison is using the issue to boost his pandemic-fighting credentials with an election looming in coming months amid record daily infections, claims the government denies.
At Monday`s hearing, a judge will seek to unravel the complexities of Australia`s federal system, under which states and territories can issue vaccine exemptions but the federal government controls international borders and can veto those exemptions.

Djokovic had received permission to enter Victoria without a vaccination from the state government, which does not have authority to issue visas to international visitors. While the reason for his medical exemption was not officially released, The Age newspaper reported it was because he had contracted COVID-19 in the past six months.
The Professional Tennis Players Association, a breakaway players` group launched by Djokovic in 2020, said they were in close contact with him.

"Djokovic has verified his well-being to us," the group said in a statement. "He has also requested that we allow him to personally share the facts of his detainment in his own words, and in his own time."

OTHER EXEMPTIONS

Morrison said Tennis Australia had been advised weeks ago that a recent infection did not meet the criteria for exemption, even though a government task force that provides guidance on such matters had recommended that an infection in the past six months should be sufficient to qualify.
Tennis Australia and Victoria government officials said Djokovic had received no preferential treatment, adding that he was among "a handful" of approvals for exemptions in an anonymous and independent assessment of 26 applications.

With the tournament kicking off on Jan. 17, Andrews said Australian Border Force was assessing the credentials of two others who entered the country under the same exemption granted to Djokovic.
A source familiar with the matter told Reuters there was a third participant and exemptions may have been granted to other players or officials who are yet to arrive in Australia.
Tennis Australia has not commented on the matter since Djokovic was detained.

World number one Ash Barty delighted the Memorial Drive crowd by breezing through to the Adelaide International semi-finals with a comfortable 6-3 6-4 victory over Sofia Kenin on Friday.

Barty, the 2020 Adelaide champion, dominated from the start and showed no signs of the rust on display in her win over Coco Gauff in the previous round of the Australian Open warm-up event.

In their first meeting since Kenin upset Barty in the 2020 Australian Open semi-final, the American struggled with her serve while her top ranked opponent was nearly flawless, producing 17 aces and winning 31 of 32 first serve points.
Barty notched the crucial break midway through the opening set and carried that momentum through to the second, wrapping up the win in just over an hour without facing a single break point.

In the aftermath of the Novak Djokovic's visa row in Australia, Indian Tennis coach Nandan Bal believes that Rafael Nadal & Roger Federer will be remembered as 'greater humans' because of their conduct off the court.

Indian tennis coach Nandan Bal on Djokovic's chequered past

Ahead of the Australian Open, World number 1 Novak Djokovic has made a lot of noise. However, the Serbian is in the news due to all the wrong reasons. While his stand on Covid-19 vaccination remains known to all, he had mentioned that he was coming to participate in the first Grand Slam of the year after getting an exemption from the Victorian government with regard to the vaccination.

As per the rules, every player needs to be fully vaccinated to participate in the Aus Open 2022. However, Djokovic was set to participate on grounds of medical exemption to take the jab. Nonetheless, the 34-year-old arrived in Australia on Wednesday (January 5) and found himself in a detention centre after not being allowed to enter the country with his visa being denied by the authorities at the airport.

Djokovic is now in a quarantine hotel in Melbourne after his lawyers secured an agreement for him to remain in the country before the court hearing on his lack of proof of exemption. Thus, the Serbian's father has lashed out at the officials for the unfortunate turn of events.

"Novak has become the symbol and a leader of the libertarian world, a world of poor and oppressed nations and people. My son has shown that a small and heroic country like Serbia can boast of the world`s all-time best tennis player and athlete," Djokovic`s father Srdjan told the Telegraf website. "They can incarcerate him tonight, shackle him tomorrow, but truth is like water, as it always finds its way. Novak is the Spartacus of the new world that doesn`t tolerate injustice, colonialism and hypocrisy," he said. "Novak has shown you can achieve anything if you have dreams, and he shares these dreams with billions of people who look up to him."

Meanwhile, a concerned mother of Djokovic -- Dijana -- said in a press conference in Belgrade on Thursday, "I spoke with him a couple of hours ago, he was good, we didn’t speak a lot but we spoke for a few minutes. He was trying to sleep, but he couldn’t."

She added, "As a mother, what can I say, you can just imagine how I feel, I feel terrible since yesterday, the last 24 hours. They are keeping him like a prisoner, it’s just not fair, it’s not human. I hope he will stay strong as we are also trying, to give him some energy to keep going. I hope he will win. His accommodation [is] terrible. World number two Daniil Medvedev beat Italian Matteo Berrettini in the singles and then returned to the court to clinch the deciding doubles and fire defending champions Russia into the ATP Cup semi-finals on Thursday.
Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime won their respective singles matches in the evening session to power Canada past Germany in Group C into the semi-finals and a Saturday meeting against the Russians.
Poland will take on Spain in the first semi-final on Friday.

A depleted Russia, who beat Italy in last year`s title match, came into the $10 million tournament without fifth-ranked Andrey Rublev and world number 18 Aslan Karatsev after both tested positive for COVID-19 in the lead-up to the team event. In a winner-takes-all final Group B tie, Italy took the lead through Jannik Sinner`s 7-6(6) 6-3 win over Roman Safiullin but Medvedev staved off a fight back from world number seven and Wimbledon finalist Berrettini to win 6-2 6-7(5) 6-4 and level the tie.

"The first set I was in control and it`s tricky because you think that things will continue to go your way but that`s not the case when you`re up against a top 10 player," U.S. Open champion Medvedev said. All four players returned for the decisive doubles at Ken Rosewall Arena and it was the Russian pair of Medvedev and Safiullin who emerged triumphant, taking a final set super tiebreak 5-7 6-4 10-5.

This year`s ATP Cup has featured 16 teams, with the four group winners proceeding to the semi-finals.
Daniel Evans and Jamie Murray rallied to beat Americans Taylor Fritz and John Isner 6-7(3) 7-5 10-8 in the deciding doubles to hand Britain a 2-1 win and keep alive their hopes of winning that group. Evans picked up his third straight singles win at the tournament by taking down big server Isner 6-4 7-6(3). Fritz then forced the tie into a deciding doubles after beating Briton Cameron Norrie 7-6(4) 3-6 6-1.

Britain needed Germany, led by Alexander Zverev, to defeat Canada in the final group tie to help them clinch the last semi-final spot, but it was not to be. After Shapovalov beat Jan-Lennard Struff 7-6(5) 4-6 6-3 in the opening singles to give Canada the lead, 11th-ranked Auger-Aliassime stunned world number three Zverev 6-4 4-6 6-3 to seal the contest.

After resistance by the Serbian tennis star, Australian authorities agree to delay Novak Djokovic's deportation amid a row over vaccination rules.

After resistance, Australia agrees to delay Novak Djokovic's deportation amid a row over vaccination

Novak Djokovic landed in Australia on Wednesday in the middle of a political maelstrom over his COVID-19 vaccine status, as a visa dispute added a new twist to the world number one`s attempt to play in the Australian Open. Djokovic, who has won nine titles at Melbourne Park including the last three, confirmed on Tuesday that had received a vaccination exemption to allow him to bid for a record 21st major title at the Australian Open, which starts on Jan. 17.

His announcement that he had received a medical exemption to play provoked outrage in Melbourne, which has endured the world`s longest cumulative lockdown and where an outbreak of the Omicron variant has sent case numbers to record levels. Prime Minister Scott Morrison had already suggested Djokovic`s participation was not a done deal and he would have to satisfy the federal government, which has responsibility for international borders and visas and was not part of the exemption process.

And Australian media reported that he had now been held up by a visa error after landing. The Age newspaper said the federal Border Force had contacted the Victoria state government asking if it would support his application after his team applied for the wrong kind of visa.

While not confirming the reason, acting Victoria Sports Minister Jaala Pulford said: "The Federal Government has asked if we will support Novak Djokovic’s visa application to enter Australia. "We will not be providing Novak Djokovic with individual visa application support to participate in the 2022 Australian Open Grand Slam."
It was not clear whether the federal government would allow his entry. The Border Force could not be reached for comment.

Morrison said earlier there would be "no special rules" for Djokovic on his exemption. "If that evidence is insufficient, then he won`t be treated any different to anyone else and he`ll be on the next plane home," Morrison told a media conference.

Tennis Australia and government officials moved quickly to stress that Djokovic, who has said he is opposed to COVID-19 vaccinations, had received no preferential treatment. Australian tennis great Rod Laver, after whom the main showcourt at Melbourne Park in the state of Victoria is named, warned that Djokovic might face hostility from the local crowd.

"I think it might get ugly," Laver told News Corp. "I`d think the Victorian people would be thinking `Yes I`d love to see him play and compete but at the same time, there`s a right way and a wrong way.` "Yes, you`re a great player and you`ve performed and won so many tournaments, so it can`t be physical. So what is the problem?"

Melbourne local Christine Wharton said it was a "disgrace". "We`ve all done the right thing, we`ve all gone out and got our jabs and our boosters and we have someone that`s come from overseas and all of a sudden he`s been exempt and can play and I think it`s an absolute disgrace and I won`t be watching it."

EXPLANATION `HELPFUL`

Organisers Tennis Australia have stipulated that everyone at Melbourne Park must be vaccinated or have a medical exemption granted by an independent panel of experts. With the exemption, Djokovic will not be required to quarantine and will enjoy the same freedoms in Melbourne as someone who is vaccinated. Tennis Australia chief executive Craig Tiley said the independent panel consisted of doctors from the fields of immunology, infectious disease and general practice and all exemptions met conditions set out by the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation.

"We completely understand and empathise with ... people being upset about the fact that Novak has come in because of his statements over the past couple of years around vaccination," he told reporters. "It`ll certainly be helpful if Novak was to explain the conditions in which he`s sought an exemption ... but ultimately it`s up to him," he said. Playing will give Djokovic the chance to nose ahead of Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer, who also have 20 Grand Slam crowns.

In a social media post on Tuesday Djokovic said "Let`s go 2022" alongside a picture of himself at an airport as he confirmed he was heading to Australia with the exemption. The decision has drawn a mixed reaction from players. "I think it`s a tough one. As we`ve seen a little bit in the last day or so, from the Australian public, I know how hard it has been for Australians ... but in particular Victorians have had a real rough trot over the last 18 months and two years," Australia`s Ash Barty, women`s number one, said.

American doubles specialist Nicole Melichar-Martinez tweeted: "I don`t understand why @DjokerNole is getting so much hate for his vaccine exemption. He`s within the rules, and the government could have said `no` but they didn`t."

Aus Open 2022: World No. 1 Novak Djokovic lands amid vaccine storm but held up by visa issue

Two-times Grand Slam champion Simona Halep began her preparation for this month`s Australian Open with a 6-4 6-2 win over local qualifier Destanee Aiava in the Melbourne Summer Set 1 tournament on Wednesday. The former world number one, who was troubled by a calf issue that forced her out of last year`s French Open, Wimbledon and the Tokyo Olympics, showed no signs of the problem in her 78-minute stay on Rod Laver Arena.

Trailing 3-4 in the first set, Romanian Halep switched gears to take the next five games before finishing in style. She will take on compatriot Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the second round. In the men`s ATP 250 tournament in Melbourne, Lithuanian qualifier Ricardas Berankis defeated American Marcos Giron 7-5 6-4 and will provide the opposition for Spaniard Rafa Nadal in his first Tour match since August.

Berankis broke Giron three times to take a tight opening set before sealing a comfortable victory. Up next for the world number 104 at the Australian Open warm-up will be Nadal, who is back in action after overcoming a left foot injury that ended his 2021 season prematurely.

Simona Halep advances in Melbourne, qualifier Ricardas Berankis to face spaniard Rafael Nadal

Novak Djokovic is all set to take part in the upcoming Australian Open 2022 after being granted a medical exemption to compete in the tournament despite not being vaccinated against COVID-19. Djokovic on Tuesday (January 04) confirmed he was on his way to Australia where he will be defending his Australian Open title this year.

World no.1 Djokovic's participation in the Grand Slam event was in doubt after he had declined to reveal his COVID-19 vaccination status. The Australian Open officials had maintained that the Serbian ace would have to show proof of his vaccination to play in Melbourne this year.

However, Djokovic has now availed a medical exemption which will allow him to play in the tournament under tight COVID-19 restrictions. Djokovic shared a picture of himself from an airport and revealed he was on his way to Australia as he looks forward to starting 2022 on a winning note.

“Happy New Year, everybody! Wishing you all health, love, and happiness in every present moment and may you feel love and respect towards all beings on this wonderful planet.

“I’ve spent fantastic quality time with my loved ones over the break and today I’m heading Down Under with an exemption permission. Let’s go 2022!," read the post from Djokovic.

Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka was rusty on her return to action for the first time in four months on Tuesday but still advanced to the second round of the Melbourne Summer Set tournament with a 6-4 3-6 6-3 win over Alize Cornet. Osaka, who last played competitively when she lost to Leylah Fernandez in the third round of the U.S. Open in September, displayed plenty of her trademark power but often lacked accuracy at the Australian Open warm-up event.

The Japanese player struggled with her first serve while committing 57 unforced errors, including eight double faults, as she eventually saw off the former world number 11. "I feel like I probably made a lot of unforced errors today but I kind of expected that because it is the first match," said Osaka. "I was really nervous so I`m just glad that I was able to hold my serve on the last game."

The match was the first since Osaka announced she was taking an indefinite break from tennis following her loss to Fernandez at Flushing Meadows. That decision brought an end to a season that had also seen her withdraw from the French Open citing mental health issues and miss Wimbledon during a mid-season hiatus.

Playing on the same Rod Laver Arena court where she has won two Australian Open titles, the former world number one looked relaxed in the opening set in front of a small crowd. "I really love playing here," said Osaka. "I love New York, but this might be my favourite Slam so it feels really good to always be back here. It feels really nice to play in front of people."

The 24-year-old squandered three break points in the fifth game but made amends two games later to take the opener. After an early break in the second set, Osaka looked to be heading for a comfortable win but the loss of four consecutive games saw Cornet pull level. Osaka, who is ranked number 13 in the world, regained her poise early in the third set, winning the first three games before closing out the match.

In the men`s ATP 250 event at the same venue, former world number one Andy Murray suffered a setback in his preparation for the Australian Open as Argentine Facundo Bagnis overcame the Briton 6-3 5-7 6-3 in the round of 32. "To beat him is amazing, I`m really happy. I enjoyed every point in the match," world number 76 Bagnis said.
Five-times Australian Open finalist Murray, down at 134th in the world rankings after layoffs due to hip surgery, has accepted a wild card to the main draw of the year`s first major, which begins on Jan. 17.

Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from the Melbourne Summer Set ATP 250 event due to asthma, organisers said on Tuesday, leaving him with only one tournament to prepare for the Australian Open later this month.

Kyrgios, a crowd favourite at Melbourne Park, has not played since late September due to knee issues and has slipped to 93rd in the rankings, which ruled him out of contention for the Australian team for the season-opening ATP Cup in Sydney.

The 26-year-old, who played only 15 matches in 2021, winning seven of them, was scheduled to take on Slovakian Alex Molcan at Melbourne Park on Tuesday. Kyrgios will now begin his 2022 season at the Sydney Tennis Classic next week after being handed a wild card for the event.

"I`m really sorry that I`ve had to pull out from this Melbourne Summer Set event. I`ve been feeling run down and unwell for four days," Kyrgios said in a statement.

U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from this week`s Australian Open warm-up tournament in Melbourne having just come out of isolation after testing positive for COVID-19, she said on Saturday.
Raducanu, who became the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam when she triumphed at Flushing Meadows in September, had pulled out of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship exhibition event in Abu Dhabi last month after contracting the virus.

The 19-year-old was scheduled to headline one of the two women's WTA 250 warm-up tournaments taking place at Melbourne Park -- dubbed the `Melbourne Summer Set` -- from Jan. 4-9. "The timing to compete in the first Melbourne event this week is too soon for me, having just returned from isolation," Raducanu was quoted as saying by the organisers.

With Roger Federer already ruled out of the Australian Open it would be a "disaster" if Novak Djokovic and Rafa Nadal do not turn up for the first Grand Slam of the year, Nick Kyrgios said, adding that the sport needs the 'Big Three' to continue playing.

Nadal, Federer and world number one Djokovic are tied on a men's record 20 Grand Slam singles titles but there is a possibility that none of them will be in action at Melbourne Park when the first major of 2022 kicks off on Jan. 17.

Federer, 40, has already pulled out after undergoing multiple knee surgeries while Spaniard Nadal has not confirmed his participation as he recovers from COVID-19.

With organisers mandating all players and participants must be vaccinated or have a medical exemption granted by an independent panel of experts, Djokovic has kept everyone guessing by repeatedly declining to say if he has been innoculated against COVID-19.

The Serb has said he is "opposed to vaccination" and Australian Kyrgios, a former world number 13, told Melbourne newspaper The Age that while he did not know what Djokovic's situation is, tennis needs him on the court.

The Australian Open has been hit by a series of injury pullouts, with major winners Serena Williams, Bianca Andreescu, Stan Wawrinka and Dominic Thiem all missing out.

Kyrgios, a crowd favourite at Melbourbe Park, has not played since late September due to knee problems, slipping to 93rd in the rankings, which ruled him out of contention for the Australian team for the season-opening ATP Cup in Sydney.

The 26-year-old will begin his 2022 season at an ATP 250 event in Melbourne next week and was on Wednesday handed a wild card for the Sydney Tennis Classic the following week.

Struggling with a wrist injury, Dominic Thiem has pulled out of next month's Australian Open, World number 15 said on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old, who has not played since suffering the injury at the Mallorca Open in June, was unable to defend his US Open title this year. Thiem reached the final at Melbourne Park last year before going on to win his maiden major title US Open.

He will start his 2022 season in South America at the Cordoba Open in Argentina at the end of January. "I will miss the Australian fans, but I will be back (there) in 2023," he said on Twitter. "We believe this is the right decision in order to have a good return to competition. For the moment I will remain in Austria for a few more days and then head to practice outdoors and get ready for my first event of the season," he said in a statement.

World No. 15 Dominic Thiem pulls out of Australian Open citing injury concerns

With players starting to arrive in Sydney for the men`s season-opening ATP Cup, there was still no clarity on Monday whether top-ranked Novak Djokovic would be taking part in the team tournament or in the Australian Open that follows. There has been intense speculation over Djokovic`s participation at the Australian Open, which starts on Jan. 17, with the 34-year-old, who is opposed to vaccinations, repeatedly declining to say if he has been innoculated against COVID-19. The rate of vaccination in the top 100 in men`s tennis is 95%, according to ATP Tour data.

With the organisers of the Grand Slam confirming that all players and participants at Melbourne Park must be vaccinated or have a medical exemption granted by an independent panel of experts, Djokovic has kept everyone guessing.

If the Serbian does not turn up, world No. 2 Daniil Medvedev would be the top draw at the ATP Cup, and he has already arrived in Sydney to help Russia defend its title. Djokovic, 34, has won a record nine Australian Open titles, including the last three, and the chances of him playing Down Under improved when he was named in Serbia`s team for the ATP Cup.

But on Saturday, a report in Serbian daily Blic said Djokovic would not be travelling to Sydney for the tournament, adding to doubts over whether he will play at Melbourne Park from Jan. 17. His father Srdjan told a Serbian television channel last month that Djokovic would probably pull out of the major, saying Tennis Australia`s stance on mandatory vaccination was tantamount to "blackmail".

Djokovic`s pullout will, however, not impact Serbia`s participation in the tournament which has a $10 million prize purse, with the teams locked in on Dec. 7 based on player entries. Owing to Djokovic`s current world ranking, Serbia received top billing for the 16-team ATP Cup from Jan. 1-9 and were put in Group A along with Norway, Chile and Spain when the draw was held earlier this month.

With Serbia, who won the inaugural ATP Cup in 2020, scheduled to open its campaign on Saturday, time is running out for Djokovic to play in Sydney and then in Melbourne, where he would have a chance to break a three-way tie for 20 major titles, currently shared with Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal.

Tennis is a game of minute percentages. The margin of error is minimal and things unfold at a rapid pace. One or two points here and there can open any contest wide open and some shots, rallies or even a mini-break helps a player to revamp and gain some momentum.

Thus, players need to be at their very best to triumph and the fitness levels should be at an all-time high. The upper core of the body needs to be strong for smacking some flawless forehands and backhands whereas the lower body is exposed during drop-shots, coming to the net and sprinting from one corner of the court to the other. While the whole game keeps spectators and viewers at the edge of their seats, rallies often produce some nerve-wracking display of talent and skills from the players.

The longer rallies expose the fitness of players, their agility, speed, presence of mind and plenty more aspects. Since time immemorial, tennis stars have given fans plenty of humdingers in the form of lengthy and brutal rallies. Here's reliving some of them, featuring the Big Three Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and many more superstars:
