An agitated Daniil Medvedev teed off at the chair umpire and lost his cool in the heat before steadying to claim a 6-2 7-6(4) 6-7(4) 7-5 win over Maxime Cressy and book his second Australian Open quarter-final on Monday.

The Russian second seed found the American serve-and-volley exponent a tough nut to crack at Margaret Court Arena and his frustration spilled over after losing the third set.

Apparently refused a request to leave the court to freshen up, Medvedev barked at the French chair umpire Renaud Lichtenstein and complained that Cressy was spending too much time between serves.

Martina Navratilova said Australian Open organisers were cowardly to prevent fans from wearing shirts bearing messages of support for Chinese doubles player Peng Shuai at the Grand Slam event.

After video emerged of security officials and police instructing fans on Saturday to remove shirts with the slogan, "Where is Peng Shuai?" on them, Tennis Australia (TA) defended its stance by saying the tournament does not allow political statements.

TA`s position dismayed 18-times Grand Slam winner Navratilova, who said the national governing body was giving in to China and placing sponsorship money ahead of human rights concerns.

"I find it really, really cowardly," she said on the U.S.-based Tennis Channel. "I think they are wrong on this. This is not a political statement, this is a human rights statement.

"(Tennis Australia is) just really capitulating on this issue ... letting the Chinese really dictate what they do at their own Slam. I just find it really weak."

Tennis Australia reiterated its stance on Monday, adding that Peng`s safety remained its "primary concern".

"We continue to work with the WTA (Women`s Tennis Association) and the global tennis community to do everything we can to ensure (Peng`s) well-being. Our work is ongoing and through the appropriate channels," a spokesperson said in a statement to Reuters.

Peng`s situation became a matter of concern in November when she alleged that a former Chinese vice premier, Zhang Gaoli, had sexually assaulted her in the past. After that post, she was absent from public view for nearly three weeks.

On Monday, Peng supporters in Australia said they were planning to hand out 1,000 "Where is Peng Shuai?" T-shirts at Melbourne Park this week after raising more than $10,000 on a GoFundMe page.

Rafael Nadal remained on course for a men`s record 21st Grand Slam title after winning a battle of left-handers against Adrian Mannarino 7-6(14) 6-2 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals of the Australian Open on Sunday.

The only former champion left in the men`s draw, 2009 winner Nadal is tied on 20 majors with injured Roger Federer and nine-times Melbourne Park winner Novak Djokovic, who was deported from Australia before the tournament began.

Mannarino had lost both his previous meetings against Nadal and came into the contest after a demanding third-round victory over Russian Aslan Karatsev in a match that lasted four hours and 39 minutes.

And after an intense opening set, which included a 30-point tiebreaker and lasted 81 minutes, the 69th-ranked Frenchman wilted under the blazing afternoon sun at the Rod Laver Arena as Nadal sealed the win with an ace on his first match point.

The former world number one will next meet either German third seed Alexander Zverev or another left-hander in Denis Shapovalov of Canada for a place in the semi-finals.

Home hero Ash Barty will play an Australian Open quarter-final for the fourth straight year after defeating emerging talent Amanda Anisimova 6-4 6-3 in Melbourne on Sunday.

The world number one was able to handle a spirited challenge from the American, proving the steadier player on key points through the 74-minute contest at Rod Laver Arena.

Although Barty had her stunning streak of 63 straight service holds broken, her ability to absorb the power of her 20-year-old rival and draw errors proved critical.

Seeking to become the first local since Chris O’Neil in 1978 to win the Australian Open, Barty will play another American in Jessica Pegula on Wednesday for a spot in the semi-finals.

Barty praised Anisimova, who she defeated in a semi-final at Roland Garros in 2019 on the way to winning the French Open.
“She`s an incredible athlete, an incredible competitor, one of her best attributes is she turns up point after point after point,” she said in her on-court interview.

"It`s just nice to see her back playing her best tennis. She`s going to be in a lot of deep stages of a lot of majors in her future, that`s for sure.

Of her own game, she added, "It was nice to be able to hold firm and bring the points back into my patterns more regularly and the big ones when it mattered most."

Jessica Pegula rekindled her love affair with Melbourne Park on Sunday by dumping Greek fifth seed Maria Sakkari out of the Australian Open 7-6(0) 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals for a second straight year.

Under a blazing sun at Margaret Court Arena, Pegula`s stonewall defence left the hard-hitting Sakkari a hot mess and the American only grew in confidence as the match went on.

Beaten by compatriot Jennifer Brady in last year`s quarters, 21st seed Pegula will have a chance to break new personal ground when she plays top seed Ash Barty or fellow American Amanda Anisimova in her next match.

With Madison Keys also reaching the last eight, the United States will again be well represented in the second week at Melbourne Park after having three quarter-finalists last year.

"I think we all root for each other," Pegula told reporters.
"It`s cool to see. You love to see Americans do well."

Having never reached the second week of another Grand Slam, Pegula has again found a spark on Melbourne`s blue hardcourts.
She stayed firm as the aggressive Sakkari broke back twice in the first set only for the Greek to crumble in the tiebreak, losing seven straight points.

From there Pegula went on the offensive, swinging hard at the Greek`s serve and was rewarded with an early break. Sakkari battled to save a match point as Pegula served out but sent a defensive backhand wide to concede the match.

Pegula, whose billionaire parents own Buffalo`s NFL and NHL franchises, will be able to watch the Bills` NFL divisional playoff against the Kansas City Chiefs during her rest day on Monday, due to the timezone.

"It`s nice that everyone is fired up about me winning and fired up about the game," she said. "It makes it really fun."
Greek trailblazer Sakkari rued a chance gone begging, having made the semi-finals of the French Open and U.S. Open last year in a breakout season.

She said she struggled in the heat and complained that the court was "dirty".

quicker," she said.

Tennis Australia (TA) responded after a couple of fans were asked to remove t-shirts and a banner bearing the words - "Where is Peng Shuai?" A video had recently gone viral on social media where the tournament officials were seen confiscating the banner and asking the fans to remove their T-shirts which were deemed 'political' in nature.

In a video shared by Drew Pavlou, an activist from Brisbane, the fans can be seen being approached by tournament officials followed by an official from Victoria Police at Melbourne Park. A spectator is asked to remove her T-shirt which has an image of Peng Shuai in the front and the message "Where is Peng Shuai?" on the back.

The police officer can be heard telling the fans that Tennis Australia was allowed to confiscate any banner or T-shirt that are deemed to be promoting political sentiments. The fans were told that the material was against Tennis Australia's policy which bans political statements at a tournament.

“I’m not saying you can’t have those views, but Tennis Australia sets the rules here,” the police officer can be heard saying in the video.

Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai had gone missing for days after accusing former Chinese vice-premier Zhang Gaoli of sexually assaulting her in a social media post. The post had been deleted soon after being posted but it went viral in no time following which Shuai went missing and was nowhere to be seen.

She resurfaced in December and denied making claims of sexual assault in an interview. However, the tennis player is yet to make her competitive return to the court and has refrained from making too many public appearances. Several top tennis players have expressed their concerns over Shuai's well-being during the ongoing Australian Open 2022.

Tennis Australia responds

Responding after the fans were asked to remove banners and t-shirts carrying messages supporting Shuai, Tennis Australia said banners, clothing or signs of political nature are not allowed under their ticketing conditions. The tennis body also reiterated that Shuai's safety remains their primary concern.

“Under our ticket conditions of entry we don’t allow clothing, banners or signs that are commercial or political,” a Tennis Australia spokesperson said.

“Peng Shuai’s safety is our primary concern. We continue to work with the WTA and global tennis community to seek more clarity on her situation and will do everything we can to ensure her wellbeing," he added.

Recently, Australian world no.1 Ash Barty was asked about Shuai during the ongoing Australian Open. “We all hope that she’s well. We hope that she’s doing OK. Hopefully, it’s not too long until we see her back out here," she had said.

The Australian Open is setting police on fans wearing Peng Shuai shirts because they take about 25 million a year in corporate sponsorship from China. Tennis Australia responds Responding after the fans were asked to remove banners and t-shirts carrying messages supporting Shuai, Tennis Australia said banners, clothing or signs of political nature are not allowed under their ticketing conditions.

Denis Shapovalov upset an out-of-sorts Alexander Zverev 6-3 7-6(5) 6-3 in broiling heat to reach his first Australian Open quarter-final on Sunday.

The Canadian lefthander was magnificent against the German third seed, earning one of his biggest career victories at Margaret Court Arena.

Shapovalov blew a match point with a wild forehand into the tramlines but wrapped up the contest when Zverev netted under pressure.

"Definitely happy with where the game is at," said the ecstatic 22-year-old, long tipped for success at the Grand Slams.

"I think off the ground I was just really playing very well, really feeling my shots off both wings."

The 14th seed will meet Rafa Nadal for a place in the semi-finals.

"It`s always an honour to go up against a guy like Rafa," Shapovalov said of the Spanish great, who is bidding for a record 21st Grand Slam title.

"It`s always going to be a battle against him. It`s going to be a tough one but I`m going to enjoy it."
It was a disappointing exit for Zverev, who was bundled out of the quarter-finals by Novak Djokovic last year.

Late last year Zverev suggested he and Russian Daniil Medvedev might become part of a new `Big Three` with world number one Djokovic in the 2022 season.

Former French Open champion Iga Swiatek continued her consistent streak at Grand Slams, dominating from the baseline to roll over Daria Kasatkina of Russia 6-2 6-3 on Saturday to storm into the Australian Open fourth round.
It is the sixth consecutive major in which the 20-year-old from Poland has made at least the fourth round.

"It`s not a good way to focus on that," said Swiatek, who has sailed through her first three matches this week, losing only 12 games in the process.

"That stat, I`m really proud of it right now that I achieved it, but in the morning I would say it gave me a little bit more pressure."

The 23rd-ranked Kasatkina, a former top-10 player, won her only previous meeting with Swiatek in 2021 but that match was played on grass.

Seventh-seeded Swiatek, who won the claycourt Grand Slam at Roland Garros in 2020, hit 24 winners and broke Kasatkina`s serve twice in each set to cruise through the contest at Margaret Court Arena in one hour and 34 minutes.

Swiatek felt she was able to tactically disrupt Kasatkina from using her topspin-heavy forehand.

"That was a really intense match. I feel like I`m playing better and better every match, so that`s a positive," the 20-year-old said.

Swiatek will next meet either another Russian in 10th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova or 38th-ranked Sorana Cirstea of Romania for a place in the quarter-finals at Melbourne Park.

Taking one match at a time has worked well for Swiatek and she was not planning to change that approach.

"I want to have some tournaments that I`m going to really make something bigger than fourth round," she said.

"But on the other hand I don`t want to focus on that, because I`m pretty good right now at just looking at another match, another step, not looking (at) what`s going to happen if I`m going to win two more matches."

Australian Open: Another major, another fourth round for sizzling Iga Swiatek

Stefanos Tsitsipas staved off the incendiary Benoit Paire to reach the Australian Open fourth round on Saturday after a tough 6-3 7-5 6-7(2) 6-4 but was oblivious that he had won after converting match point.

Paire dunked a forehand into the net on the first of three match points on a steamy afternoon at Rod Laver Arena, but fourth seed Tsitsipas walked to the back of the court rather than approach the net as fans cheered in the terraces.

The Greek turned on his heel with surprise on his face when the result was called over the loudspeaker by the chair umpire.

He then jogged forward to acknowledge Paire before bounding around the court with a proper celebration. A twice semi-finalist at Melbourne Park, Tsitsipas was spared queries on the faux pas by the on-court interviewer.

"I`m pretty glad with that win, Benoit is someone I say is one of the biggest stars in our game," he told him.
It was a second helping of confusion for Tsitsipas in the match, having been cautioned for courtside coaching earlier in the contest.

"I have no idea," Tsitsipas told reporters of the warning.

"I was really far away from my coach, and with my back facing the other way, so I was just laughing because I don`t know where that came from. It was completely unexpected."

Most other things went well for Tsitsipas on the day, barring the third set tiebreak, where he inexplicably crumbled to let Paire back in the match.

Tsitsipas was then on the back foot against the Frenchman, who kept in touch with a net-rushing bravado while knocking the Greek off his stride with some deft drop shots.

However, Tsitsipas found solace in his serve, which was virtually untouchable until 4-4 in the final set when he came under some pressure at 30-30.

Paire swore and berated himself after letting Tsitsipas off the hook with errors and then served up a double-fault to gift the Greek match points.

French Open finalist Tsitsipas will meet American Taylor Fritz for a place in the quarter-finals, as he continues his bid for a first Grand Slam title.

"Big server, big hitter. He has weapons," he said of Fritz.

"I will really have to stay consistent and keep pushing him back."

Following her disappointing performance Down Under, the 35-year-old superstar Sania revealed her retirement plans and told on Court 5 at Melbourne Park, "There's a few reasons for it. It's not as simple as 'okay I'm not going to play'. I do feel my recovery is taking longer, I'm putting my 3-year-old son at risk by travelling so much with him, that's something I have to take into account. I think my body is wearing down. My knee was really hurting today and I'm not saying that's the reason we lost but I do think that it is taking time to recover as I'm getting older."

She further explained, "I was very sure that this was going to be my last season when I started the year or even in December. Just the way my body is playing, I don't think I can finish the season. I want to play the full season, I'm still 50-60 in the world, I played nine tournaments last year. I do think I have the level to play, it's not about that. As an athlete, I think I can go deep into tournaments."

U.S. Open champion Daniil Medvedev will face the mercurial Nick Kyrgios in a tricky second-round clash at the Australian Open on Thursday as the Russian looks to make the most of world number one Novak Djokovic`s absence and collect a second major title.

Medvedev secured a routine win against Henri Laaksonen in his opener but would expect a tougher examination against Aussie Kyrgios, who dazzled the John Cain Arena with some outrageous shot-making in the straight-sets victory over Liam Broady.

"I mean, obviously either way it`s going to be a hell of an experience for me. You know, he`s probably the best player in the world at the moment. So I`m pretty excited... that`s why I play the game," said Kyrgios, who has won both their previous meetings.

Seventh seed and last year`s Wimbledon finalist, Italy`s Matteo Berrettini, demonstrated his winning mentality, overcoming American wild card Stefan Kozlov 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in two hours and 38 minutes to reach the third round at the Melbourne Park for the second time here on Wednesday.

The Italian, who suffered from stomach problems in the first round, overcame the American with the help of 53 winners.

"It was a tough match. I think I started really well but then he started playing better and I wasn`t feeling my strokes after the first set, but I am happy to be through," Berrettini was quoted as saying by atptour.com. "My stomach is better, but it is never easy to recover from something like that, so that is why my energy wasn`t its highest. I am really happy to win."

Berrettini will take on Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz in the next round after the youngest Grand Slam seed in more than 30 years defeated Dusan Lajovic of Serbia 6-2, 6-1, 7-5 to advance to the third round.

After a strong start, Berrettini struggled to find his rhythm against Kozlov, who hit aggressively and with great depth to force the 25-year-old into errors. However, the world No. 7 was able to rely on his powerful serve to dig him out of holes, firing 21 aces and saving four of the five break points he faced in their first meeting on the ATP.

Berrettini is making his fifth appearance at the first major of the season, with his best result a fourth-round spot last year. However, the Italian has a strong Grand Slam pedigree, having reached Wimbledon final in 2021 where he lost to Serbia`s world No. 1 Novak Djokovic.

The 31st seed Alcaraz has yet to drop a set in Melbourne and will be targeting another deep run at a slam, after advancing to the quarterfinals at the US Open in September. The 18-year-old is the youngest player to be seeded at a major since Michael Chang at the 1990 US Open.

"I`m really happy with the performance today. It wasn`t an easy day with all the wind," Alcaraz said. "I knew that I`d have to be really focused on the match, really focussed on what I had to do."

Coached by former world No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero, Alcaraz had to advance through qualifying to make his main draw debut last year, but after a breakout season in 2021, he has returned as the 31st seed.

Looking ahead to his clash with Berrettini, whom the Spaniard beat in a third-set tie-break in their lone meeting last year indoors in Vienna, Alcaraz said, "It was a really close match... and I think I have grown up since that match. I`m going to have fun and let`s see what happens."

Rafa Nadal put on a clinical performance to ease past German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann 6-2 6-3 6-4 and reach the third round of the Australian Open on Wednesday keeping the Spaniard on course for a men`s record 21st Grand Slam title.

The only former champion left in the men`s draw at Melbourne Park, Nadal is tied on 20 majors with Roger Federer and world number one Novak Djokovic, who are both absent from the tournament.

A second Australian Open title will also make the Spaniard only the second man after Djokovic to win each of the four Grand Slam titles twice since the sport became professional in 1968.

Nadal has, however, repeatedly said that his only objective at this year`s opening major was to stay healthy, having returned to the Tour after recovering from a long-standing foot problem and contracting COVID-19 last month.

"I said here before the tournament start, things are not going to be perfect, but every day that I`m going to spend on court, the chances to play better are higher," said Nadal, who won an Australian Open tune-up event, his first since August.

"I think I am doing things well. I`m excited about the fact that I`m going to be playing in a third round for one more time here after all the things I am going through. I don`t have big pressure on my shoulders, honestly. I don`t feel it."

The 2009 champion`s only previous meeting with the 126th-ranked Hanfmann came on the Roland Garros clay in 2019 when Nadal lost just six games in route to a straight-sets victory.

The 30-year-old German did slightly better on a windy day at the Rod Laver Arena but not enough to trouble Nadal, who hit 30 winners and broke his opponent`s serve four times while saving both breakpoints he faced.
Hanfmann started well by advancing to the net regularly and also drawing Nadal forward with drop shots but the Spaniard improved as the match progressed.

The sixth seed needed five match points before sealing victory when Hanfmann sent a forehand long and he will next meet either Russian Karen Khachanov or Benjamin Bonzi of France for a place in the fourth round.
Nadal said he wanted to be more aggressive on court.

"Only five matches after such a long period of time, not enough in general terms to appreciate if I am able to change something or not," he said.

"If I`m able to play more matches in the next couple of months, I hope to be able to play better and better and to improve couple of things."

Australian Open: Rafael Nadal advances to third round with easy win over Yannick Hanfmann

The Federal Court of Australia will publish reasons for its dismissal of tennis star Novak Djokovic`s challenge to the cancellation of his visa on Thursday at 0515 GMT, the court said.

The reasons will be read out in court by Chief Justice James Allsop in a session streamed live online, a court spokesperson said.
Djokovic was deported from Australia on Sunday night, just hours after the court dismissed his effort to stay in the country to play at the Australian Open, where he hoped to win a record 21st major title. The year`s first Grand Slam tournament began on Monday.

His departure ended an 11-day rollercoaster following the cancellation of his visa on arrival for not having a proper medical exemption from COVID-19 vaccination requirements.

His saga has stoked global debate over the rights of people who opt not to get vaccinated as governments look to protect the community from the coronavirus pandemic.

Djokovic was held in an immigration detention hotel for several days until a court reinstated his visa on the grounds that he had been treated unfairly at the airport.

Late last Friday the government cancelled his visa again on the grounds that he might foster anti-vaccination sentiment if he was allowed to stay. Djokovic challenged the cancellation on the grounds the minister had acted irrationally, but the court dismissed the case.

The Federal Court of Australia will publish reasons for its dismissal of tennis star Novak Djokovic`s challenge to the cancellation of his visa on Thursday at 0515 GMT, the court said.

Novak Djokovic cannot play French Open without COVID-19 vaccine, says French Sports Ministry

Britain`s teenage sensation Emma Raducanu cleared a dangerous first-round hurdle at the Australian Open, seeing off experienced American Sloane Stephens 6-0 2-6 6-1 in a topsy-turvy contest on Tuesday. Raducanu, who rocketed to fame in September with a fairytale run to the U.S. Open title as a qualifier without dropping a set in what was only her fourth senior tournament, raced through the opening set in 17 minutes, leaking only four points.

But former world number three and 2017 U.S. Open champion Stephens finally found her rhythm and range to take charge of the second set from 2-2, reeling off four games as errors began creeping in to 17th seed Raducanu`s game.
It looked ominous at that point for the 19-year-old Raducanu whose build-up to her Australian Open debut had hardly been ideal, having had COVID-19 and suffering a heavy defeat in her opening match in Sydney.

But she showed the same coolness under pressure that swept her to the title in New York, settling down and finding another gear to dominate the decider with some precision baseline hitting as the Stephens game unravelled again.
Stephens avoided another rout as she held serve at 0-5 but there was not to be another twist on a sparsely-populated Margaret Court as Raducanu closed out the win on serve despite a sixth double-fault on her first match point.

It was an encouraging start for Raducanu despite the second-set wobble and she will be heavily fancied to get past 99th ranked Danka Kovinic of Montenegro in the second round.

Greek world number four Stefanos Tsitsipas put on a clinical show against familiar opponent Mikael Ymer of Sweden during a 6-2 6-4 6-3 victory in the opening round of his Australian Open campaign on Tuesday.

Tsitsipas said he considered himself one of the best on hardcourts with nine-time Australian Open winner and world number one Novak Djokovic deported from the country over his COVID-19 vaccination status and no longer in the mix.

"I have a great net game, and most of the players don`t have the ability to come to the net the way I do and to cover the court and win a lot of points with volleys," the Greek told reporters.

"They simply don`t have it. It`s something that is in my advantage, and I have been working my entire lifetime to perfect that. Perhaps other things they might have better than me, but in this department, I think I`m in favour."

Tsitsipas came into his first-round match with a 2-0 head-to-head Tour lead against the 86th-ranked Ymer, riding high on confidence having dropped just six games in their previous meeting in the third round at Melbourne Park last year.

Tsitsipas broke his fellow 23-year-old, someone he has grown up playing on the junior circuit, seven times and hit 30 winners to seal the contest in two hours and 10 minutes in the final match of the second day at Rod Laver Arena.

The Greek was, however, not happy with the 38 unforced errors he committed in the match.

"There were a lot of rallies, a lot of ball exchanges, he gave me a hard time, he was going after every single ball and stayed in the match for as long as he could," Tsitsipas said in his on-court interview.

"I will be trying to decrease the amount of unforced errors, I think I had a few more than I usually have. I`ll be trying to keep the consistency and trying to attack a bit more, be a bit more daring in certain moments."

The French Open finalist also showed no signs of discomfort from a right elbow issue that forced him to miss a number of matches at the end of last season and also did not allow him to play at full tilt at the start of 2022.

Ymer showed glimpses of his talent and had his chances but could only convert two of his 11 breakpoint opportunities. The frustration ultimately got to the Swede as he kept punching his towel-clad head repeatedly during a changeover.

Aus Open: Stefanos Tsitsipas makes confident start with impressive straight-sets win

As Novak Djokovic flew home from Australia after being deported for not being vaccinated against COVID-19, doubts arose over whether the tennis star would be able to play in the French Open.

The current men's number 1 player could be barred from the French tournament this year, under a new law intended to exclude the unvaccinated from stadiums and other public places.

French lawmaker Christophe Castaner said on Monday the new law will apply anyone who wants to play in the French Open - a reversal of earlier plans to create a "bubble" around the tournament.

"The rules apply to everyone," Castaner said.

"He has no vocation to play if he's not vaccinated, if he's not going to respect a rule that applies to spectators, the ball-boys or the professionals with shops at Roland Garros."

Much could change between now and the start of the Grand Slam tournament in late May, but that raised the spectre that the saga in Australia would be not just a blip but an ongoing challenge for the tennis star, who is increasingly being held up as a hero by the anti-vaccine movement.

Some details of the law are still being hashed out - including how it will deal with people who have recently recovered from COVID-19, as Djokovic has.

The question is how recent the infection has to be to qualify for an exemption to vaccination rules.

France's sports ministry said once the law is in place, there will be no exceptions until further notice.

Doubt over Novak Djokovic's participation in French Open after Australian Open debacle

Nick Kyrgios promised COVID-weary fans a show after recovering from his own infection and duly delivered on Tuesday with a tweener-laden 6-4 6-4 6-3 win over Briton Liam Broady on Tuesday to reach the Australian Open second round.

Kyrgios matches are box office gold but have dwindled through the pandemic, and there was danger home fans would miss the Australian at Melbourne Park this year after he tested positive in the leadup.

But after exiting isolation on Sunday, the tennis maverick returned to the combustible John Cain Arena and gave raucous fans a night to remember as he set up a blockbuster clash with second seed Daniil Medvedev.

Sealing the win with a furious backhand return down the line, Kyrgios dropped an "F-bomb" in his televised on-court interview and performed Cristiano Ronaldo`s trademark post-goal celebration.

On his way out of the arena, he took a swig of beer from a cup offered by a fan. COVID-19 be damned.

"I served ... well today," said Kyrgios with an obscenity as fans roared in agreement.

"I don’t know what I have done to this crowd as you guys are a zoo now. I am super happy to be here again."
It took only minutes for Kyrgios to ignite the terraces by breaking Broady in the opening game. He closed out the next game with an under-arm "tweener".

Having lit a fire in the crowd, Kyrgios proved unable to control it, as fans hooted between serves and yelled at Broady to go home.

"I kind of know I`ve created this ... show, anyway," he said to chair umpire Nico Helwerth, urging the German to do more to quell the commotion.

Relegated to the straight man in Kyrgios`s routine, there was little for 128th-ranked qualifier Broady to do but grin and bear it as fans jeered and 41 winners fired past him.

"Everyone is telling me, like, `Oh you`ll really enjoy it. It`s going to be amazing`. But I thought it was absolutely awful," said Broady.

"It`s the first time I`ve ever walked onto a tennis court and been booed, which for me was a crazy experience."

Kyrgios has a 2-0 career record over U.S. Open champion Medvedev, both wins in 2019, but never faced him at a Grand Slam. Playing a long match against the super-fit Russian may be tough for Kyrgios after his recent illness -- and especially if the match is held away from John Cain Arena.

"We`re going to be playing on Rod Laver Arena ... Let`s be honest, I think we are," he said.

Showman Nick Kyrgios goes from sick-bed to Australian Open second round after win over Liam Broady

Novak Djokovic arrived home in Serbia on Monday after Australia deported the world men`s tennis No. 1 for not having a COVID-19 vaccine, a stance jeopardising his quest for a record 21st Grand Slam title.

"You are our champion, Novak!" chanted supporters, some waving national flags, outside Belgrade airport.

The 34-year-old had won nine past Australia Opens and is level with Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer on 20 titles.

But instead of beginning his quest for another Melbourne Park major, he took planes to Dubai then Belgrade after being twice detained in a hotel with asylum-seekers then unceremoniously booted out by Australian immigration.

"100% the Australian Open has lost its value. Whoever wins it now, doesn`t really count. Because Djokovic is the number one," said Alek Drakoo, a member of the local Serbian community, who had planned to watch him play in Melbourne.

The government`s decision was in tune with Australian public opinion because of Djokovic`s stance on inoculation, but authorities have been criticised for not resolving the issue before he arrived.

"I am uncomfortable that the focus of the past weeks has been on me and I hope that we can all now focus on the game and the tournament I love," Djokovic, 34, said in a statement, expressing disappointment but respect for a court decision against him.

BACK TO OZ?

Under Australian law, he cannot be granted another visa for three years unless the immigration minister accepts there are compelling or compassionate reasons.

But Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison hinted there may be a way to allow him in next year. "There is the opportunity for (a person) to return in the right circumstances, and that will be considered at the time," he told 2GB radio.

France said Djokovic would be barred from playing the French Open in May and June as things stand now because of a new vaccine pass law.

"This will apply to everyone who is a spectator or a professional sportsperson," the ministry said in a statement, adding, however, that the pandemic situation could change by then. "We`ll see, but clearly there`s no exemption."

Australia`s Federal Court ruling to uphold the cancellation of Djokovic`s visa - originally granted on a medical exemption as he recently had COVID-19 - dismayed his family and supporters, who portray him as a persecuted underdog.

Djokovic was first detained by immigration authorities on Jan. 6, ordered released by a court on Jan. 10 and then detained again on Saturday before Sunday`s court hearing.

He wore a mask and took selfies with fans as he arrived in Dubai from Melbourne, before taking a terminal buggy to the departure gate for a six-hour flight to Belgrade.

Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic has called the treatment of a national hero "scandalous".
Australian Immigration Minister Alex Hawke had said Djokovic could be a threat to public order because his presence would encourage anti-vaccination sentiment.

His case has stoked a passionate global debate over the rights to decline vaccination as authorities around the world push that as the main route out of the two-year-old pandemic.

`YOU HAVE TO COMPLY`

Djokovic`s exemption angered many Australians, who have endured some of the world`s toughest lockdowns and have an adult vaccination rate of more than 90%. Some called him arrogant, ill-informed and uncaring about health risks.

The controversy became a political touchstone for Morrison who faces an election by May, amid wrangling over responsibility between his centre-right federal coalition government and the centre-left Victoria state government.

Morrison defended his handling of the situation and differentiated Djokovic`s case from vaccine sceptics within his own government. "If you’re someone coming from overseas, and there are conditions for you to enter this country, then you have to comply with them," he said.

Spain`s Nadal said the tournament would not be the same without his great rival.
