Taking the court for the first time as the World No. 1, top seed Daniil Medvedev eased into the third round with a 6-3, 6-2 win over 21-year-old Czech qualifier Tomas MacHac on Saturday.

Medvedev must reach the quarterfinals to prevent Novak Djokovic from reclaiming the No. 1 ranking.

Later, fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas came within two points of defeat in a bruising battle with Jack Sock to claw his way into the third round.

Sock, who had crushed 28 forehand winners to be on the cusp of his first Top 10 win since 2017, had the match on his racquet serving at 5/4 in the third-set tie-break.

But as happened in the first-set-tie-break, his lack of recent big-match experience told when the chips were down, and he made two unforced errors to let Tsitsipas back in, the Greek closing out the match 7-6(5), 3-6, 7-6(5).

Spanish sensation Carlos Alcaraz, who earlier this year captured the Rio de Janeiro title to become youngest ATP 500 champion in series history (18), notched his first career win at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden via a 6-3, 6-3 dismissal of Mackenzie McDonald.

The teenager capitalized on five of nine break-point opportunities in the one-hour, 35-minute win.

While, Great Britain's Cameron Norrie took his first step toward defending his 2021 title by ousting Spain's Pedro Martinez, 6-3, 6-3.

Andy Murray overcame a slow start and a third set service break to beat Taro Daniel 1-6 6-2 6-4 in the first round of Indian Wells on Friday and notch his 700th career win.

With the victory, the Briton became the 18th player of the Open era to achieve the feat on the ATP Tour.

"This was a target that I set for myself on the back end of last year," Murray said in an on-court interview.

"It's a lot of wins obviously, and I'm very happy to get it here.

"Let's go for 800 now."

It appeared Murray would have to wait to reach the milestone after Daniel came out sharp, attacking Murray's serve and cruising through the first set on a sunny day in the Southern California desert.

Murray, who is three years removed from major hip surgery, did not move well early on but sprang to life in the second, breaking Daniel at love when the Japanese player sent a forehand wide on set point to level the match at a set apiece.

Daniel won eight straight points to open the third and take a 2-0 lead with help from some sloppy play by the three-time Grand Slam champion.

But Murray would not give in, pumping his fist when he broke back with a forehand winner for 3-3 to the delight of sun-soaked crowd at Stadium One.

Nerves appeared to get to Daniel in the final game as he committed three straight unforced errors to give Murray three match points, and the 34-year-old converted his third opportunity to seal the win.

"I got off to a bit of a slow start," Murray said.

"I'm old now so with these 11 a.m. starts, it takes me a bit of time to get going.

"But Taro played extremely well. I lost to him in Australia so I was expecting a tough match," Murray said of Daniel, who beat the Briton in straight sets in Melbourne in January.

Indian Wells: Andy Murray beat Japan's Taro Daniel to bag his 700th career win

Alexander Zverev on Wednesday said he would deserve to be suspended if he violates the probation handed down to him for his outburst in Acapulco last month, where he smashed his racket against the umpire's chair and verbally abused him.

The world number three was fined $40,000 and forfeited more than $31,000 in prize money and all rankings points he earned from singles and doubles action at the Abierto Mexicano tournament.

Following a review, the ATP issued an additional fine of $25,000 and an eight-week ban from any ATP-sanctioned event but suspended those provided that over the next year, he does not incur any more fines for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Alexander Zverev says he would deserve to be banned on losing temper again

Tennis players lashing out at umpires is hurting the sport and stiffer penalties need to be imposed to discourage it from happening, Rafael Nadal told reporters on Thursday.

Nadal's comments came after Alexander Zverev received one-year probation - but no immediate suspension - following an outburst in Acapulco last month where he smashed his racket against the umpire's chair and verbally abused him.

Given the intensity of Zverev's tantrum and the proximity to the chair umpire's ankles, many were surprised the 24-year-old German was allowed to compete at the Indian Wells tournament.

"I have a good relationship with Sascha, I like him, I practise with him very often, so I wish him all the very best. And he knows that he was wrong and he recognized that very early and that's a positive thing," Nadal said.

"On the other hand, if we are not able to control this type of attitude on court, not just this one instance in particular, there has been other stuff going on in the last couple months.

"If we are not able to penalize these types of attitudes in a little stronger way, then we as players will feel stronger and stronger all the time.

"In this sport, we have to be a positive example, especially for the kids."

Nadal was relaxed and upbeat as he fielded questions at the picturesque Indian Wells Tennis Garden in the Southern California desert.

The Indian Tennis team will play a first home tie in the Davis Cup since February 2019 when they take on Denmark in the World Group 1 playoffs. The match is being played on Grass in New Delhi with Ramkumar Ramanathan and Yuki Bhambri nominated to play the two singles matches on Friday. Rohan Bopanna will mark his 20th year in Davis Cup when he pairs up with Divij Sharan for Saturday’s doubles match and he looked back on his journey in a conversation with Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo.

Rohan Bopanna previews India's Davis cup tie against Denmark

Yuki Bhambri returned to Davis Cup action with a commanding win while Ramkumar Ramanathan did not even need his ‘A game’ to emerge victorious as India grabbed a 2-0 lead in the World Group I Play-off tie against Denmark, here on Friday.

Taking full advantage of the Danish player’s discomfort on the low bounce grass court, Ramkumar cruised to a 6-3 6-2 win over Christian Siggsgaard, ranked as low as 824, in the opening singles of the tie at Delhi Gymkhana Club.

There was hardly any fight in the match, that lasted just 59 minutes, as Christian made it easy for the 170th-ranked Indian with his unending unforced errors.

Yuki, playing Davis Cup for the first time since 2017, doubled India’s lead with a 6-4 6-4 win in the second singles against Mikael Torpegaard, who, though served and stroked confidently to keep the Indian camp on edge.

It was clear that India’s strategy to host Denmark on grass courts worked well as tackling the low bounce indeed troubled the visitors.

Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan will now strive to seal the tie for India on Saturday when they take court for the doubles match against Frederik Nielsen and Johannes Ingildsen.

If they win, India will keep their place in the World Group I and the reverse singles will be rendered inconsequential.

Despite dropping his serve in the opening game, Torpegaard did not let Yuki seize the momentum.

Whether it was stroking from baseline, serving, swift movement on both flanks or charging the net, Torpegaard did all to prevent it from becoming a one-sided affair like the first singles.

He got the break back in the fourth game and what followed was engrossing tennis from both the players. Yuki broke his rival one more time — in the ninth game — and saved break chances in the 10th to eventually nose ahead.

The first game of the second set was the most fiercely-fought game of the day as it featured as many as five deuce points.

Ironically, it ended with Torpegaard’s double fault and all the hard work the Danish player had put in came to a naught. Yuki made it 2-0 with a hold in the next game.

The perfectly placed forehand slices gave Yuki another chance to break in the third game. Torpegaard only helped Yuki’s cause when he netted a half-volley. From there on, it looked like a formality though Torpegaard kept fighting hard. Yuki dropped serve in the eighth game when he was serving for the match and soon from 4-1 it was 5-4.

Yuki ensured there was no more drama as he served out the match in the 10th game when Torpegaard could not return the ball with his backhand.

In the first singles, Christian struggled with his serve, committing as many as three double faults in the second game of the opening set and was down a breakpoint but Ramkumar could not capitalise on that chance.

Ramkumar mostly used backhand slices for returns and stayed solid on his service games. Christian again handed Ramkumar a break chance when he double-faulted at 30-all in the fourth game.

A long rally ensued with both players putting to use their backhand slice stroke but Ramkumar eventually prevailed.

There were not many points when the lanky Indian charged the net, a strategy which was expected to be followed by him, but the error-prone game of Christian made it easy for Ramkumar.

The Indian had three set points in the eighth game but could convert none. He sealed the opening set in the next game with a solid serve that Christian could not return, netting a backhand.

In the second set, it was Christian who blinked first, going down 0-40 in the third game. He began with a double fault and Ramkumar put his rival under more pressure with a stunning forehand crosscourt return winner. Christian then netted a return.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has gained eyeballs over the past few days. The Ukraine crisis continues to make the headlines as the whole world has slammed Vladimir Putin-led Russia's tactics and have united in extending support to Ukraine amid such testing times.

Following the Ukraine-Russia conflict, the sporting world has also seen many sporting bodies coming together and shunning Russia after the unfortunate turn of events. Recently, WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo also got a chance to interact with India's ace tennis player Rohan Bopanna. The 41-year-old veteran player expressed his concern over the turn of events in Ukraine and reacted to the changes taking place in the tennis fraternity following Russia's invasion. He has, thus, voiced his opinion on the entire matter and shared a strong message as well.

In the exclusive interaction, Bopanna said, "It is very difficult for every athlete or person out there. It is difficult. Players can't do much as they travel the whole world. It is not easy on them. Sometimes you don't know whether it is the right call. Players are also getting affected. It is a very Catch 22 situation but it is never easy on athletes. (On ITF along with the ATP and WTA allowing Russia, Belarus players to play but banning them in team events), he asserted, "Banning, anyway, isn't the right way. When so many government bodies are involved, we don't know the pros and cons. Something like this happens, it is very very difficult. If the players can play, it is then ok but still never easy." Lastly, Bopanna called for peace and added, "Sport brings in great culture, friendship and peace....That's what we need today in the world. "

Rafael Nadal beat new world number one Daniil Medvedev 6-3 6-3 in a rematch of their Australian Open clash to storm into the final of the ATP 500 event in Acapulco on Friday.

Nadal had to fight back from two sets down in their previous meeting in Melbourne in January to clinch a men`s record 21st Grand Slam title, but in Mexico, it was the Spaniard who got off to a fast start.

Medvedev was forced to defend a couple of breakpoints in his very first service game, before Nadal broke minutes later to take a 3-1 lead, which he held onto to claim the first set 6-3.

Nadal appeared to have carried his momentum into the second set, breaking serve early to go 1-0 up, but Medvedev grew into the contest as the set progressed and began causing the Spaniard all kinds of problems with his backhand dropshot.

Medvedev earned a total of 11 breakpoints across just two of Nadal's service games in the second set, but the Australian Open champion dug deep to hold serve on both occasions, and snuff out the Russian's attempted comeback.

Nadal's holds under pressure took the wind out of Medvedev's sails and the Russian was broken once again as an unforced backhand error handed Nadal the win and set up a clash against British number one Cameron Norrie in the final.

Russia's Andrey Rublev writes 'No War Please' on camera lens after tough semi-final win in Dubai - watch

New world number one Daniil Medvedev defeated Japan`s Yoshihito Nishioka 6-2 6-3 in Acapulco on Thursday to storm into the semi-finals of the ATP 500 event, where he will take on Rafa Nadal in an Australian Open final rematch.

Medvedev, who took the court hours after Novak Djokovic`s quarter-final loss in Dubai meant the Russian would replace him atop the rankings, converted six break points and fired down 12 aces, including one to seal the match.

"It`s not easy, actually, to play a match when you get this (news) during the day," Medvedev said in his on-court interview when asked about becoming world number one.

"So then when I was receiving all the messages, well I understood that, yeah OK, it`s going to happen."

After blitzing his way through the first set, during which he converted all three break point chances and won 80% of his first serve points, Medvedev was forced to rally back in the second after falling behind 3-1.

Up next for Medvedev is Australian Open champion Nadal, who made a blistering start against world number 39 Tommy Paul but faced a second set fightback from the American amid increasing humidity to prevail 6-0 7-6(5).

Medvedev squandered a two-set lead against Nadal in their previous meeting in Melbourne in January, allowing the Spaniard to clinch a men`s record 21st Grand Slam title.

He will have to be in top form to beat Nadal, who is on a 13-match winning streak in 2022 - his best start to a season in his career at the age of 35.

"Kind of a chance to get my revenge," said Medvedev. "You have to learn from the best, which is him, Roger (Federer), Novak, Andy (Murray) ... always when they were losing a tough fight, they were trying to get their revenge."

World number four Stefanos Tsitsipas, who was runner-up in Acapulco last year, also reached the semi-finals with a 6-3 6-4 victory over American Marcos Giron and has not dropped a set this week.

Tsitsipas will face British sixth seed Cameron Norrie who lost just one game to hammer Germany`s Peter Gojowczyk 6-1 6-0 in the day`s final match on the main showcourt.

New world No.1 Daniil Medvedev and Rafael Nadal renew rivalry in Acapulco semis

Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev has called for peace after his country attacked Ukraine. Medvedev was confirmed as the new world number one in men's singles tennis on Thursday after defeating Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka in the quarter-final of the Mexican Open to set up a semi-final clash against current Australian Open champion Rafael Nadal.

With Novak Djokovic suffering a shock defeat at the Dubai Championships, the Russian's win over Nishioka at the Mexican Open saw him topple the Serbian to move to the top spot in the rankings. While Medvedev became the first man apart from Djokovic, Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray to become the world no.1 in men's singles since 2004, he said it was not easy for him to focus on tennis amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

Medvedev said as a tennis player he is all for promoting peace across the world, having played in several different countries himself throughout his career. The Russian tennis star said it was not easy for him to watch the news. "By being a tennis player I want to promote peace all over the world," said the new world no.1 in men's singles tennis.

"We play in so many different countries. I`ve been in so many different countries as a junior and as a pro. It`s just not easy to hear all this news. I`m all for peace," he added.

Daniil Medvedev praises Russian compatriot Andrey Rublev for Ukranian pairing

Medvedev's Russian compatriot Andrey Rublev had paired up with Ukraine's Denys Molchanov to win the men's doubles title in Marseille last week. Lauding Rublev for his pairing with the Ukrainian, Medvedev said people need to stay together.

"This was amazing because I think people need to stay together and that's the most important," Medvedev said while talking about Rublev and Molchanov.

Though it is one of the biggest moments of his career to attain the top ranking in men's tennis, Medvedev is not worried about the sport and is hopeful of peace prevailing across the world. The Russian tennis star said it is in situations like these that sports take a backseat for more important issues around the globe.

"At this moment, you understand that tennis sometimes is not that important. It was definitely not easy to play and I am happy that I managed to win the match. That was a little bit of a roller-coaster day," said Medvedev.

"In these moments you realise that my match is not important. It's not about my match, how it affects me. What's happening is much more terrible.

You realise how important (it) is to have peace in the world and to respect each other no matter what, to be united. It's about that. We should take care of our earth and of each other. This is the most important thing," he added.

Novak Djokovic suffered a shock 6-4 7-6(4) defeat by qualifier Jiri Vesely in the Dubai Tennis Championships quarter-finals on Thursday and will lose his status as world number one next week. U.S. Open champion Daniil Medvedev, who is currently playing in a tournament in Mexico, will move to the top of the rankings on Monday.

Russian Medvedev will become the first player other than Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal or Andy Murray to top the rankings since Feb. 1, 2004. Djokovic spent a record 361 weeks atop the rankings and won eight tour-level titles, including three Grand Slams, since regaining his top-ranked status in February, 2020.

"Unfortunately, it wasn`t my day," Djokovic told reporters. "I congratulate Jiri. He played better. He just went for his shots. His serve was big. His whole game was big.

"I expected myself to play on a higher level, for sure. I mean, I can do better. But credit to Jiri."

Playing in his first event since being deported from Australia ahead of the year`s first Grand Slam tournament, Djokovic lost serve in the opening game as Vesely matched him stroke for stroke.

Djokovic broke back at 1-2 but was never allowed to settle by Vesely, whose clever drop shots had his opponent scrambling at the net as the Czech sealed the first set 6-4.

The 20-times major winner started strongly in the second set but Vesely maintained his high level, racing into an early lead in the tiebreak to clinch his second career victory over Djokovic. Djokovic said he was still trying to find his rhythm.

"The more matches I play, the more confident I will be, the more comfortable I`ll be feeling on the court," the 34-year-old said.

Vesely said defeating Djokovic was an "amazing feeling".

"I never really thought I would have a chance against Novak," Vesely said. "He is one of the greatest of all time.

"It is great for tennis to have someone new at world No. 1. Novak is such a champion, he has been No. 1 for 361 weeks, but tennis needs new world No. 1s and there is a new generation coming up and I think it is great."

Alexander Zverev deserved to be expelled from the ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco for his expletive-filled tantrum after a doubles defeat, Rafa Nadal said on Thursday, adding that he was sure the German Olympic champion will learn from his mistake. Upset over a line call earlier during Wednesday`s match, world number three Zverev smashed his racket repeatedly against the umpire`s chair, coming perilously close to hitting match official Alessandro Germani, and shouted expletives.

Zverev, 24, who won the singles gold at the Tokyo Games last year, apologised after he was defaulted for `unsportsmanlike conduct` from the event where he had won the singles title last year. Nadal said he felt sorry for Zverev with whom he shared a "good relationship". "He deserved the sanction because you can`t act in this way," the winner of 21 major titles said after reaching the quarter-final at Acapulco.

"I think he is aware of that and I hope that this serves as a learning process for him and other young players who lose their temper on the court sometimes." Zverev's angry outburst could earn him more sanctions from the men`s governing body.

According to the ATP rulebook, the on-site supervisor could refer the case higher up for further investigation after completing the process of assessing and issuing any further fines and penalties. In 2019, after an initial fine of $113,000, Australian Nick Kyrgios was given a suspended ban of 16 weeks and an additional fine of $25,000 for "aggravated behaviour" by the ATP following an internal investigation. Nadal did not want to get into the quantum of punishment.

"I think the organisation needs to be strict about it because the images spread quickly on social media and there are millions of children watching and they develop these attitudes," the 35-year-old added. "I understand there are moments of frustration and anger but we need to try to be an example." World number two Daniil Medvedev and Denis Shapovalov were also heavily fined at the Australian Open for their outburst against the umpires. "That`s what happened to me a few times," Medvedev, who can climb to the world number one ranking with a title in Acapulco, said after his victory on Wednesday.

"He made a mistake. He paid for it. From what he said he understands that he made the mistake. And that`s the most important. People, no matter which job, which sport, everybody makes mistakes. "(It) was definitely not nice what he did, but he understands it. From my point of view, I understand when you make mistakes, but you regret it and next time you try not to make it."

U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu was forced to retire with a left hip injury in the deciding set of her opening match against Australia's Daria Saville on Tuesday in the WTA 250 tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The 19-year-old from Britain was playing her first match since last month's painful exit in the second round of the Australian Open, when a blistered racket hand contributed to a three-set defeat by Danka Kovinic.

The British player was two points from victory at the Abierto Akron Zapopan against former world number 20 Saville, who has slipped to 610 in the rankings after undergoing surgery on her Achilles tendon last year.

Russia's Daniil Medvedev defeated Benoit Paire of France 6-3 6-4 in the first round of the Abierto Mexicano tournament in Acapulco on Tuesday to get his quest for the world number one ranking off to a winning start.

World number two Medvedev is looking to ascend to the top ranking for the first time by displacing Serbian Novak Djokovic, who is competing at the Dubai Tennis Championships.

Djokovic will be forced to relinquish the crown even if he wins Dubai for a sixth time, provided the Russian wins the ATP 500 event in Acapulco, where he is making his tournament debut.

"If Novak would not be playing, then maybe it would be a little bit more in my mind because it would only be me and it depends on what I can do," Medvedev said.

Taking to the main showcourt after Medvedev's win, Rafa Nadal breezed past 100th-ranked American Denis Kudla 6-3 6-2 in his first match since winning the Australian Open last month for his 21st Grand Slam title.

The 35-year-old Spaniard seemed to have some problems with the humidity on a warm night in the coastal resort town and decided to save as much energy as he could, sealing the contest in 76 minutes with his 16th forehand winner and 26th overall.

Nadal lost just four points on his serve while breaking his opponent three times to race to his 11th consecutive win in the 2022 season.

"It has been a positive start, a good victory in straight sets. That's always very positive for the confidence," Nadal said. "I think I played a very solid match, a good effort today."

Medvedev's contest also appeared to be a one-sided affair when Paire dumped a lifeless forehand into the net to hand the Russian the first set in 51 minutes. But Paire flexed his muscle in the second, attacking the Russian's serve for a 4-2 lead.

Playing for the first time since his defeat to Nadal in the Australian Open final, Medvedev kept his focus and outworked the Frenchman in a back-and-forth deuce game to level at 4-4 and sealed the win when Paire's backhand sailed into the net.

"It's always not easy to come back after some rest and some time off competition," Medvedev said. "Sometimes better, sometimes worse.

"I felt like my sensations were not at the top today, but I managed to fight until the end against a very tough opponent and I'm happy that I managed to win."

Alexander Zverev completed victory over American Jenson Brooksby in the Abierto Mexicano tournament at 4.55 am local time on Tuesday, the latest ever finish for a professional tennis match.

After battling for three hours and 19 minutes, during which the German world number three twice came within a point of losing during a second-set tiebreaker, Zverev defeated the 47th-ranked Brooksby 3-6 7-6(10) 6-2.

There were still appreciative tennis fans in the stands at the ATP 500 tournament which has four of the world's top five players participating this year, as the match finished even later than the 2008 Australian Open clash between Lleyton Hewitt and Marcos Baghdatis which ended at 4:34 am.

"Right now I'm happy to have won," defending champion Zverev said on court. "I don't know how Jenson feels. Must be difficult but happy to be a part of history. It was an incredible battle."

It was not the only epic contest on a manic Monday night in Mexico.

American Stefan Kozlov was in the middle of an evening practice session with Rafa Nadal when he found out he was replacing injured Frenchman Maxime Cressy in the main draw as a lucky loser.

"I was playing a practice set with Rafa ... he breaks his string, goes to his bag.

I just happen to check my phone for whatever reason," Kozlov said. "I just had an intuition and then I have 20 text messages ... they're like 'get over here'.

"I dropped all my stuff. I told Rafa, he's got a big smile on his face. He's super excited for me ... I got over here and I had about 30 minutes to get ready."

Facing former world number three Grigor Dimitrov, the 130th-ranked Kozlov suffered severe leg cramps after breaking his opponent`s serve to take a 5-3 lead in the second set.

Kozlov slumped to the ground in agony and was barely able to move after returning to court as Dimitrov reeled off four successive games to force a decider.

Most people would have expected Kozlov to retire after losing the second set but the 24-year-old displayed incredible mental and physical strength to complete his biggest career win in three hours and 21 minutes.

He will next face either fellow American Denis Kudla or Nadal.

British tennis star Andy Murray has refused to support world no.1 tennis player Novak Djokovic's anti-vaccine stance but believes the world's best player should be taking part in all major events. Djokovic was barred from playing in the Australian Open 2022 earlier this year after refusing to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

Djokovic was held in detention before getting involved in an agonising legal battle only to get deported from Australia. He failed to defend his Australian Open crown as Rafael Nadal pipped him and the legendary Roger Federer to become the first player to reach a record 21 Grand Slams in his career.

After his controversial deportation from Australia, Djokovic has returned to the action for the first time in the ongoing Dubai Championships. Murray, who is also playing in the tournament, told reporters he doesn't agree with Djokovic's decision to not get vaccinated but sympathises with the Serbian tennis ace over what happened with him in Australia.

“I’ve not seen him here (in Dubai). We exchanged a few messages while he was in Australia. I don’t agree with his decision. It would be a lot easier for him if he were to get vaccinated," Murray told reporters in Dubai.

“But I also didn’t like seeing him in the situation that he was in Australia as someone that I respect, have known since I was a child," he added.

Murray insisted that Djokovic's decision was bound to have consequences for him and the world no.1 will have to deal with them. However, he believes the Serbian, who is one of the greats of the game, should be allowed to take part in all major events as it is not great for tennis if Djokovic is not competing in big tournaments.

“There are consequences to the decisions he’s made just now. He obviously has to accept that. But I don’t think it’s great for tennis if our best player is not competing in the major events," said Murray.

“It would be better for tennis if he were playing all of the major events," he added.

Andy Murray against Novak Djokovic's anti-vaccine stance but wants to see him competing in major events

World number one Novak Djokovic belatedly began his 2022 campaign with a convincing 6-3 6-3 defeat of Italian teenager Lorenzo Musetti at the Dubai Championships on Monday.

The 34-year-old showed no sign of rust or mental baggage from the Australian Open visa saga that rocked the sports world, producing a polished display to ease into the second round, afterwards describing it as a "pleasant experience."

It was Djokovic's first match this year after his Australian Open hopes were dashed when he was deported following an 11-day saga revolving around his decision not to have a COVID-19 vaccination and a controversial exemption he had been granted to play in the event.

Two court hearings were required before Djokovic was expelled on Jan. 16 having spent several days in a hotel, with the country's immigration minister ruling he could fuel anti-vaccine sentiment if allowed to compete.

Back on a tennis court of Dubai`s Aviation Club, Djokovic showed just why he would have been favourite to win a 10th Australian Open crown and beat Rafa Nadal to a men's record 21st Grand Slam title.

After being cheered on to court by the late night crowd, he moved through the gears, breaking Musetti's serve in the fourth game of a routine first set.

Djokovic, watched by his entourage including wife Jelena, got an early break in the second set with a forehand winner.

He briefly wavered when serving at 3-2 and was forced to save break points, but never looked threatened as his supporters, many with Serbian flags, cheered his winners.

Djokovic crunched a superb forehand winner in the final game and claimed victory on his first match point.

Even if he wins the Dubai title for a sixth time, he could lose his world number one ranking this week should Russian Daniil Medvedev win the Acapulco title.

But for Djokovic, enjoying an ATP record 361st week as number one, that was the last thing on his mind as he put one of the darkest episodes of his career behind him.

"I couldn't ask for a better reception. It's been a while since I played the last match and I couldn`t pick a better place to kick-start the season," Djokovic, who had not played since the Davis Cup Finals in November, told fans after performing his trademark salute to all sides of the arena.

Djokovic, who last week said in a BBC he was not against vaccines but was prepared to miss major tournaments rather than have one, will have a day off before facing either Russian Karen Khachanov or Australian Alex de Minaur.

Asked by reporters later how he had been received by his fellow players, he said they had been "very friendly."

"Majority of them actually welcomed me and said it's nice to see me back on the tour," he said.

While Djokovic has had no issues being allowed to play in Dubai, he said he currently will not be able to play at Indian Wells, because of strict vaccine laws in the United States.

Novak Djokovic returns to action, beats Lorenzo Musetti in opening game at Dubai Championships

Two years after winning his first tour-level match in Rio de Janeiro, 18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz of Spain became the youngest to clinch an ATP 500 title at the same event on Sunday when he defeated Diego Schwartzman in the final of the Rio Open.

It was a second tour-level title for Alcaraz after his victory in Umag last year and his 6-4 6-2 victory against 13th-ranked Argentine Schwartzman made him the youngest ATP 500 champion since the category was created in 2009.

"I can't believe it, honestly. It has been a great week for me playing a great level," Alcaraz said on court after his win.

"First tournament on clay since a long time, so I'm really happy with the performance during the whole week. It`s an amazing feeling right now."

Alcaraz, who won the NextGen ATP Finals in 2021, came into Sunday's final after having to play both his quarter-final and last four matches on Saturday because of a scheduling logjam due to rain earlier in the week.

He defeated top seed and world number six Matteo Berrettini and another Italian Fabio Fognini, a former top 10 player, and climbed to a career-best 20th when the ATP rankings were updated on Monday.

"It has been a tough week," said Alcaraz, who withdrew from this week's ATP 500 tournament on the hardcourts in Acapulco, Mexico, due to a slight niggle.

"To be in the top 20 was a goal for me at the end of the year (2021) and to be able to do that at the beginning is amazing."

Spain's Carlos Alcaraz creates history, becomes youngest ATP 500 winner with Rio title

Growing up, sports dominated a major chunk of my daily life. Either it was starting the day by flipping the newspaper backwards, to get the sports updates, or fighting for the remote -- with the elder sibling -- to watch sporting events from across the globe (not denying, cricket remained top priority).

Nonetheless, my father's inclination towards tennis brought me closer to the game. Soon, I found myself gazing at the TV sets for hours, particularly, when marquee players faced each other on the court. The four Grand Slam events became a major part of my calendar year as well.

Impossible, what???

While Roger Federer won titles left, right and centre and made tennis look like the easiest game of all -- it is anything but easy -- a slightly younger Rafael Nadal emerged out of Spain to challenge the Swiss maestro.

Nadal dominated every opposition on clay court, especially winning the French Open without breaking any sweat on many occasions. Slowly and steadily, he gained a good hold on hard courts (US Open and Australian Open). His aggression, palpable energy, fitness, etc. won me over. His training and playing style proved that he hardly ever cared for the word 'impossible'.

As years progressed, Nadal and Federer were joined by Novak Djokovic as the Big Three continue to rule the roost in tennis to date. Meanwhile, I managed to sustain my interest in sports by donning the journalist's hat in the specific beat.

While tennis took a backseat for me, I continued to keep a tab on Nadal's journey. Often, his sudden first-round exits left me bewildered whereas his injury concerns made me restless. Nonetheless, I slowly made peace with the fact that it isn't easy being Nadal and, probably, tougher remaining his fan.

The Spaniard, however, kept himself relevant in the field and competed hard, with major titles still flocking his way albeit at regular intervals.

In 2018, Federer attained his 20th Grand Slam trophy when he defended his title in the Australian Open. In the year 2020, Nadal equalled the Swiss maestro when he clinched the French Open. In the following year, Djokovic joined the two with equal number of titles (20) with a win in Wimbledon 2021.

Thus, Nadal headed into the 2022 Australian Open as a very strong contender to become the first male tennis player to get to 21 major titles. Of course, World No. 1 Novak Djokovic's deportation back to his home country (Serbia) before the Aus Open -- due to Covid-19 vaccination row -- helped Nadal's cause. On the other hand, Federer wasn't taking part in the showpiece event. Thus, it seemed as if the stars were aligned to see him recreate his unimaginable magic on-court.

However, nothing comes easy when you are Rafael Nadal. His fans are also used to seeing him sweat hard, change (tight) t-shirts during lengthy matches, grunt loudly before winning big. A similar script unfolded for the tennis superstar when he faced Russia's Daniil Medvedev in this year's Aus Open final at Melbourne Park on January 30.

Luckily, I was glued to the TV set on that Sunday afternoon -- enjoying a peaceful week-off -- to watch the summit clash. Being on-off helped me immensely as the mental pressure was set to grow manifold.

Down but never out...

In a flash, Nadal lost the opening two sets. The aces were far and few in between. Medvedev was breaking his serve as it seemed all lost. Having grown up watching his relentless energy, never-say-never attitude until the last point, power-hitting and turning into an aggressor during tougher tides, I still had hopes on Nadal. However, they were falling apart with each point lost.

A big player keeps fighting on as he, or she, knows even a small moment can shift the momentum in their favour. Nadal has time and again done that. While I feared the pattern would catch up with him, the veteran proved that one who believes in himself, or herself, doesn't fear the impossible. All of a sudden, he earned a few good points whereas Medvedev lost the plot amid lack of crowd support; bringing the Spanish player back in contention.

The 35-year-old won the third set and came from behind to win the final two. Eventually, Nadal won 2-6, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 to stun the sporting fraternity. While the social media fanclubs will only keep a count on the Big Three's titles, Nadal remains unfazed despite becoming the first man to reach the magical 21-Grand Slam title mark.

Nadal and Nadal-fan: A strange match made in heaven!

Nadal remains content with teaching his fans to do the cliched -- keep working hard and let the process take care of the results. His appetite for success, fighting spirit, ability to bounce back, self-belief and competitive spirit is worth a chapter in itself.

At 35, Nadal continues to give me goosebumps. He makes me come face-to-face with an unwanted side of mine (where I get irritated when the going gets tough) before signing off by doing the impossible on the court. Surely, the joy and struggles of being his supporter will continue for as long as he continues to challenge the impossible.
