In PICS – Novak Djokovic wins US Open 2023, beats Daniil Medvedev to lift record 24th Grand Slam title

American teenager Coco Gauff came from behind to win the US Open on Saturday, clinching her first Grand Slam title with a battling win over Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus.

Gauff, 19, produced a gutsy performance on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in 2hr 6min to complete a fairytale transformation in her season's fortunes.

The sixth seed from Florida&nbsp;had gone into the final as the underdog against the hard-hitting second seed Sabalenka, who will become world number one in next week's rankings.

But with both players making a slew of mistakes throughout an error-strewn final watched by a star-studded record crowd of 28,143 it was Gauff who held her nerve when it mattered to seal a deserved victory.

The win completed a remarkable turnaround for Gauff, who was left distraught after a first round exit at Wimbledon in July.

However she bounced back to win titles in Washington and Cincinnati and has now landed the biggest win of her career, after a shattering loss in her first Grand Slam final at the French Open last year.

"It means so much to me," an elated Gauff said afterwards. "I feel like I'm a little bit in shock in this moment.

"That French Open loss (last year) was a heartbreak for me. This makes this moment even sweeter than I could imagine."

Gauff, the third American teenager to win the US Open after Tracy Austin and Serena Williams, also used her victory speech to thank those who doubted her talent.

"Honestly thank you to the people who didn't believe in me," she joked.&nbsp;

"To those who thought they were putting water on my fire, they were putting gas on my fire and I'm burning so bright right now."

Sabalenka meanwhile blamed self-inflicted errors for her defeat, saying at times she was playing "me against me."

"She was moving just unbelievable today," Sabalenka said of Gauff. "But then the second set I start probably overthinking, and because of that I start kind of like losing my power.

"Then she start moving better. I start missing a lot of easy shots."

<h2>First set struggle</h2>

Gauff was in trouble in the opening game, Sabalenka breaking her straight away with a rasping backhand that drew a roar of "Come On!" from the Belarusian.

She held easily to take a 2-0 lead but Gauff then took advantage of a shaky service game from Sabalenka to break at 2-2 in the fourth.

The Belarusian double-faulted twice to allow Gauff to get back on level terms.

But that hard-won parity was surrendered in the next game as Sabalenka broke back to go 3-2 ahead.

Australian Open champion Sabalenka then wobbled on her own serve once more as Gauff eked out two break points in the sixth game.

But Sabalenka got it back to deuce with an ace and then took a 4-2 lead with an emphatic smash.

Gauff's problems on serve continued and Sabalenka broke for the third time to race 5-2 ahead, and she duly wrapped up the set by holding in the next game.

Yet with the match threatening to become a rout, Gauff finally clicked into gear in the second set, making fewer unforced errors and ironing out the kinks in her serve.

Instead it was Sabalenka who began to show signs of brittleness as the tension mounted. She double-faulted to hand Gauff the only break of the set and a 3-1 lead.

Gauff fended off a break point in the next game to hold for 4-1 and went on to hold for the remainder of the set to level the match when Sabalenka smacked a forehand long.

The momentum remained firmly with Gauff in the final set and she secured another crucial break in the opening game when she put away an underhit Sabalenka lob with a smash.

Gauff then held easily for a 2-0 lead as Sabalenka struggled to regain any semblance of composure.

She coughed up four unforced errors to gift Gauff a break and a 3-0 lead, and the American then held with ease to go 4-0 up.

Sabalenka stopped the rot by holding serve in the fifth game, before taking a medical timeout to receive treatment on her left thigh.

Gauff was in no mood to let her grip on the match slip though.&nbsp;

Although Sabalenka held and broke Gauff to cut the lead to 4-2, Gauff hit back when Sabalenka double-faulted to present a break point.

Gauff cashed in to break and grab a 5-2 lead and then swept to victory in the next game, holding to love with a backhand winner.

Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz has pulled out from this month's Davis Cup to recover following his U.S. Open semi-final loss, the world number one said on Saturday. Alcaraz, the defending champion at New York, exited this year's final major after suffering a defeat to third seed Daniil Medvedev of Russia on Friday.

Alcaraz, 20, will be replaced by Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the Spain squad.

"I was really looking forward to playing for Spain at the Davis Cup in Valencia, but I have to listen to my body after a very long tour," Alcaraz said on messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter. "I need to stop and rest, physically and mentally. The schedule is very demanding; there is still a long season ahead, and now it's time to recharge my batteries. Best of luck to the Spanish team! I will be supporting you strongly! Let's go!"

The 35-year-old Ramos-Vinolas, currently ranked 88th, has been called by captain David Ferrer, who won the Davis Cup as a player on three occasions with Spain, lifting the trophy in 2008, 2009 and 2011, as well as a runners-up finish in 2012.

"Ramos was already called up for last year's Final eight in Malaga. Spain's Carlos Alcaraz pulls out of Davis Cup following US Open semis exit

As Novak Djokovic again stands on the verge of history at the US Open, he has a score to settle with Daniil Medvedev after his loss to the Russian in the 2021 final cost him a calendar Grand Slam.&nbsp;

Medvedev defeated Djokovic in straight sets two years ago to prevent the Serbian from becoming the first man to win all four Grand Slams in the same year since Australian great Rod Laver in 1969.

On Sunday the 36-year-old Djokovic goes in search of a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles title against Medvedev, who unseated reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz in a gripping semi-final.

Djokovic will return to world number one next week, but he is wary of being swept up by the significance of the occasion in New York.

"Every time in a Grand Slam final it's another shot for history, you know, and I'm aware of it, and of course I'm very proud of it," said Djokovic.

"But again, I don't have much time nor do I allow myself to reflect on these things or think about the history too much in this sense.

"Because when I did that in the past, like, '21 finals here I was maybe overwhelmed with the occasion and the opportunity and I underperformed.

"So I don't want this to happen again."

Djokovic fell agonisingly short of matching Margaret Court's all-time mark for most Grand Slam singles titles when he lost to Alcaraz in five sets in the Wimbledon final in July.

That remains his only defeat at the majors since a quarter-final loss to Rafael Nadal at the 2022 French Open. He is 33-1 at the Slams since then.

Djokovic is the first man in the Open era to play in 10 finals at two different Grand Slams. He has a perfect record at the Australian Open, but New York is the site of some of his biggest disappointments.

<h2>Age is just a number</h2>

He is just 3-6 in US Open finals but could become its oldest men's champion in the modern era, surpassing Australia's Ken Rosewall who was 35 when he won in 1970.&nbsp;

"Physically I have been as fit or as prepared, as strong as, I don't want to say as ever, but, I mean, as good as I have been in years and years," said Djokovic, who swept past 20-year-old Ben Shelton in the last four.

"Age is just a number, that phrase is resonating at the moment with me. And, you know, I don't want to even consider leaving tennis or thinking about an end if I'm still at the top of the game.

"I just don't see a reason for that."

Medvedev avenged his Wimbledon semi-final whipping by Alcaraz to reach his fifth Grand Slam final.

The 27-year-old Russian lost a five-set classic to Rafael Nadal here in 2019. He was also beaten by Djokovic in Melbourne two years later before going down to Nadal at the following Australian Open.

"If I lose on Sunday, the tournament, it's like it's a good tournament but I'm going to be hell of a disappointed. That's how tennis is," said Medvedev.

Djokovic leads the head-to-head 9-5 but Medvedev knows his rival wants to set the record straight after the 2021 final defeat which left him in tears.

"I think the only way I can use it is, as I say, thinking that Novak, when he loses, he's never the same after," said Medvedev.

"So he's different. It's just a different mentality. That's why he has 23 Grand Slams, whatever, Masters 1000s, weeks at number one."&nbsp;

"So I have to use it knowing that he's going to be 10 times better than he was that day. And I have to be, if I want to still beat him, 10 times better than I was that day."

Medvedev has already torn up the script once this tournament with a "12 out of 10" performance against Alcaraz. He may need another off-the-charts display to deny Djokovic one more time.

"Novak is going to be his best version on Sunday, and I have to be the best-ever version of myself if I want to try to beat him."

Tennis: Novak Djokovic chases record-equalling 24th grand slam title in US Open final

Novak Djokovic used his experience to overcome American Ben Shelton as the Serbian battled past his 20-year-old challenger 6-3 6-2 7-6(4) to reach his 10th U.S. Open final on Arthur Ashe Stadium on Friday.

Shelton had flummoxed opponents in New York with his big serve, but the 36-year-old second seed Djokovic was able to harness his experience to neutralise a third-set surge from the young American.

"Obviously I knew that he's got a lot of firepower. He has an amazing pop on the serve, he's just so dynamic and very unpredictable what comes next," said Djokovic. "I just had to stay there mentally, present, calm, and focus on the game plan."

Already assured of returning to the top of the world rankings when they are updated after the tournament, Djokovic will continue the hunt for his 24th Grand Slam title to match Margaret Court's all-time singles record on Sunday.

Shelton handed Djokovic a break in the sixth game of the first set with a series of unforced errors, and the unseeded American was unable to convert his own break point chance in the ninth.

In the second set, Shelton's best weapon failed him as he helped Djokovic secure a break with a double fault in the fifth game and he dropped his racquet in frustration as he sent a forehand out to hand the Serb another break in the seventh.

Djokovic was competing in his 47th major semi-final while Shelton was appearing in his first. The difference in experience was apparent as the second seed broke Shelton with a fine forehand winner in the opening game of the third set.

But the American came to life late as he fended off a break point with a 143-mph (230-kph) ace in the fifth game to a chorus of cheers from the home crowd.

Playing in only his seventh U.S. Open singles match, Shelton triumphed in a 30-shot rally before converting a break point in the eighth game, humbling Djokovic, who was appearing in his 100th singles match at the hardcourt major.

Djokovic broke again in the 11th game but could not stop the set from going into a tiebreak as he swatted one into the net to allow Shelton to break back in the 12th game.

The Serb forced Shelton into a forehand error on match point and made a not-so-subtle jab at the American's favoured celebration as he mimed answering - and hanging up - the telephone while walking to the net.

"At 36, every Grand Slam final, yeah, I don't know, could be the last one," Djokovic told reporters. "I probably value these occasions and opportunities to win another slam as more than I have maybe 10 years ago, because 10 years ago I felt like, 'Hey, I still have quite a few years ahead of me'. I don't know how many I have ahead of me now."

Shelton said he was taking lessons away from the tournament in what he can achieve.

"I learned a lot about myself these two weeks, knowing how, you know, deep I can go, how deep I can dig," said Shelton. "I kind of found a place where I can operate and still be calm and still be clear-minded but be a fierce competitor."

The match was played under increased security after a bizarre incident on Thursday night, in which a protester glued his feet to the floor of Arthur Ashe Stadium, forcing a nearly one-hour stoppage of a semi-final match between American Coco Gauff and Czech Karolina Muchova.

US Open: Novak Djokovic punches final's ticket with straight set win over hometown boy Ben Shelton in semis

Daniil Medvedev upset defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in an enthralling semi-final duel to reach the US Open final on Friday. Russian third seed Medvedev set up a rematch of his 2021 victory over Novak Djokovic after ousting Alcaraz 7-6 (7/3), 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in a gripping 3hr 19min battle on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court.

Spanish star Alcaraz had been hoping to become the first man to successfully defend the US Open since Roger Federer in 2008, eyeing a blockbuster final against 23-time Grand Slam singles champion Djokovic on Sunday.

But Medvedev -- who shattered Djokovic's dream of a calendar year Grand Slam two years ago by beating the Serb in straight sets in the final in New York -- once again tore up the script.

The 27-year-old from Moscow had said before Friday's semi-final he would have to deliver an "11 out of 10" performance to beat Alcaraz, who had defeated the Russian comfortably in two previous meetings this season.

Medvedev was to prove as good as his word over the course of a high-quality duel that is surely a contender for match of the tournament.

Medvedev completed victory in the ninth game of a nail-biting fourth set, smashing a desperate return from Alcaraz to convert his fourth match point.

"Amazing, especially beating someone like Carlos," Medvedev said. "Before the match for sure I had a lot of doubts after losing easily to him twice this year.

"I said I needed to play 11 out of 10 - I played 12 out of 10, except for the third set."

Medvedev had grabbed the early initiative by taking the first set on a tie-break after neither player gave up any break point opportunities in the opening frame.

While Alcaraz looked instantly in the groove, mixing his thunderous groundstrokes with several of his signature drop shots, it was Medvedev who prevailed in the tie-break.

Buoyed by that early breakthrough, Medvedev raced away with the second set, breaking Alcaraz in the second game for a 2-0 lead and then clinching another break in the sixth game with a jaw-dropping running backhand winner down the line that fizzed past his opponent.

That left Medvedev 5-1 up and he duly served out comfortably to take a two-set lead.

Alcaraz hit back to claim the third set when Medvedev sent a return into the net, which took it into the fourth set.

The decisive break came in the sixth game, Medvedev taking a 4-2 lead with another glorious backhand return of serve that Alcaraz was unable to deal with.

Both men then held serve to leave Medvedev serving for the match at 5-3.

Alcaraz bravely saved three match points but Medvedev unleashed a corking serve on the fourth match point that the Spaniard could only manage a looping return to.

Medvedev hammered a forehand into the corner and although Alcaraz was able to get it back, Medvedev was waiting at the net to smash an unstoppable winner.

US Open: Daniil Medvedev upsets defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in enthralling semis, to face Novak in final

American Coco Gauff beat Karolina Muchova 6-4 7-5 to reach her first U.S. Open final on Thursday after the match was halted for nearly an hour when an environmental activist glued his feet to the floor of Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Gauff, who had beaten Muchova in the Cincinnati final last month to claim the biggest title of her career, fed off the energy of the home crowd to get past the Czech once again.

"Some of those points, it was so loud and I don't know if my ears are going to be okay," Gauff said. "I grew up watching this tournament so much so it means a lot to me to be in the final. A lot to celebrate but the job is not done."

Gauff, the sixth seed, will next face the winner of the other semi-final between compatriot Madison Keys and Belarusian second seed Aryna Sabalenka.

The match was delayed by roughly 50 minutes early in the second set due to a protest by four spectators. The USTA said three of the four were escorted out of the stadium without incident but a fourth "affixed their bare feet to the floor of the seating bowl".

Gauff swept the first three games of the opening set and broke her opponent again in the sixth.

Muchova, this year's Roland Garros runner-up, capitalized on some mistakes by the 19-year-old and broke straight back in the seventh, raising her level from there to break Gauff again in the ninth.

The Czech's good work went to waste, however, as she committed a trio of unforced errors in the 10th game, allowing Gauff to break to love and take the set.

After a routine hold by Gauff to open the second set, shouts were heard from high up in the stands and both players sat on their benches as security staff members quickly moved to quell the disruption.

As the delay stretched on both players left the court as police officers surrounded the remaining protester before removing him from the venue with his hands behind his back.

After the players returned they warmed up again on court before resuming play, neither appearing rattled by the incident.

Muchova double-faulted to help Gauff break in the eighth game but saved match point in the next game before breaking the American’s serve to keep the match going.

Muchova saved four more match points in the 12th game but Gauff would not be denied, surviving a 40-shot rally on the penultimate point with a forehand winner before cheering with delight as her opponent sent a backhand past the baseline on the sixth match point.

Muchova gave credit to her opponent but told reporters that she was disappointed in the quality of her own play on Thursday.

"I was not feeling it from the start until the end," she said. "I'm pretty sad about the outcome, that I didn't put the best out of me on the court. Yeah, just kind of sad about the performance."

Yeah, just kind of sad about the performance." WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Unseeded Ben Shelton took down Frances Tiafoe in four sets in an all-American US Open clash&nbsp;Tuesday to book a semi-final date with 23-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.

World number 47 Shelton defeated Tiafoe 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (9/7), 6-2 to make the last four of a major for the first time and become the youngest American man to do so in New York since Michael Chang in 1992.

"It doesn't get much better than that," the 20-year-old Shelton said of a first-time meeting with Djokovic that awaits him on Friday.

"I feel like I left it all out here tonight. It was an emotional battle."

Shelton saved a set point as he won a crucial third-set tie-break and pulled away in the fourth to settle a historic first Grand Slam quarter-final in the Open era featuring two African-American men.

"Sometimes you've got to shut off the brain, close your eyes and just swing, and maybe it was a little bit of that down set point and it end up working out," said Shelton.&nbsp;

"Some may say clutch but I don't know about that."

The former college champion, who is coached by his father and former professional Bryan Shelton, arrived at his second US Open with a tour-level record of 12-20 this season.

He had failed to win multiple matches at any of the 18 ATP Tour events he had played since advancing to the quarter-finals in his Australian Open debut.

Ten of his 17 victories in 2023 have now come at Grand Slams. Shelton reached the second round at Wimbledon after losing his opening match at the French Open.

Shelton ran away with the first set after breaking last year's semi-finalist Tiafoe in the fifth and seventh games.

Tiafoe responded with a single break in the second enough to level the match. The contest turned into a real back-and-forth struggle in the third set as the pair exchanged six breaks of serve.

Shelton shook off consecutive double faults in the tie-break as two set points passed by, smacking a blistering inside-out forehand to stay in the set and holding his nerve as Tiafoe cracked first.

It was a pivotal moment in the match as Shelton carried over the momentum into the fourth set, breaking right away and then once more for a 5-2 lead before shutting the door on Tiafoe.&nbsp;

Tennis: Unseeded Ben Shelton takes down Frances Tiafoe to set up semi-final clash vs Novak Djokovic in US Open

On Tuesday (September 05), Novak Djokovic emerged on top of Taylor Fritz in the quarter-finals of the US Open 2023. The Serbian went past the American with a scoreline of 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 and the win marked a significant milestone for the former world number one Djokovic. The win has propelled the 36-year-old to his 47th Grand Slam semi-final, surpassing the record previously held by Swiss maestro Roger Federer.&nbsp;

However, there was a moment in the match when Djokovic lost his cool on a spectator. During a live volley with Fritz, a spectator yelled 'Out!' which disrupted the Serbian's concentration, leading him to concede the point. Thus, this was not well received by Djokovic and the veteran made his displeasure known as he requested the fan to be escorted out of the Arthur Ashe Stadium.&nbsp;

Here's the video of the entire incident from the quarter-final face-off between Djokovic and Fritz:

The spectator surely disrupted Djokovic's flow with a needless shout as not only did the Serbian lose the breakpoint but the entire game. However, he still sailed past Fritz in straight sets to march ahead to the semi-finals, where he will face Ben Shelton on September 09.&nbsp;

Djokovic joked that he asked his friends to have a word with the spectator. "He was actually in the box where some of my friends were. I don’t know who the guy was; but yeah, I was pretty annoyed by him at that point. I was communicating with my friends to have a little chat with him,” Djokovic laughed.

“I’m actually glad the crowd wants to get into it, because it means the match is interesting, that they want to be part of it, that they’re having fun. At the end of the day, they pay to come and watch you play, so we try to put on a show. Sometimes [they] might have an interaction with the player, like this guy. I’m sorry for him, but he was really annoying at that point," he added.

Tennis: Djokovic loses cool after a spectator yells 'out' during Taylor Fritz face-off in US Open - Watch

Coco Gauff said learning how to smile more often is behind her dazzling run at the US Open after she stormed into the semi-finals with a straight sets thrashing of Jelena Ostapenko on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old sixth seed became the first American teenager to reach the last four of the US Open since Serena Williams in 2001 after demolishing Latvia's Ostapenko 6-0, 6-2 in just 1hr 8min.

It was another polished performance that suggested Gauff is finally ready to land a breakthrough Grand Slam title, four years after she announced herself to the world with a magical run to the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2019.

Gauff's season has been transformed since she began working with veteran coach Brad Gilbert in July, weeks after she was left distraught by a first-round exit at Wimbledon.

Since Gilbert's arrival, Gauff has won titles in Washington and Cincinnati, where she also defeated outgoing world number one Iga Swiatek for the first time.

Gauff says one of the biggest changes Gilbert has made is to her mindset.

"I thought to play and win you have to be ultra serious and ultra focused, which is true, but also you still have to enjoy it," Gauff said after Tuesday's win.

"Honestly, the first meeting that I had with Brad before he started coaching with me, one of the first things he said is 'You need to smile more'. It wasn't really anything with my game or anything.

"I really took that, and when he said that I was a little bit surprised. I started to think and I was like, 'Yeah, I do.' That's something I'm trying to work on and continuing to do, and obviously I think it's helping my results."

Gauff meanwhile says she is flattered by comparisons to Serena Williams after matching the 23-time Grand Slam champion's feat in reaching the US Open last four as a teenager.

"I mean, being in any sentence with her is great. She's the greatest player of all time," she said. "I'm nothing close to that yet. I'm just really honored to be in the same sentence as her."

"She's my idol. I think if you told me when I was younger that I would be in these same stat lines as her, I would freak out."

Gauff will face either Czech 10th seed Karolina Muchova or Romania's Sorana Cirstea in the last four on Thursday.

<h2>'Crazy' scheduling</h2>

On Tuesday's evidence, Gauff will head into the last four brimming with confidence after producing a superb display to overwhelm Ostapenko.

Ostapenko had produced the shock of the tournament in the last 16 on Sunday, ousting world number one and reigning women's champion Iga Swiatek in three sets.

But amid furnace-like heat on the Arthur Ashe Stadium, the inconsistent Latvian wilted in the face of a scorching performance from her American opponent.

Former French Open champion Ostapenko hit out at US Open scheduling after her defeat, stating she had not been given enough time to recover properly following her gruelling late-night victory over Swiatek on Sunday.

"I think it's really hard to recover from those night matches, because after beating world No.1, I went to sleep at 5 a.m.," Ostapenko said.&nbsp;

"You sleep for maybe like seven, eight hours, but you don't completely recover.&nbsp;

"I think it's a little bit crazy."

Gauff broke Ostapenko's serve three times in a lopsided first set which was over in 20 minutes, with the Latvian coughing 15 unforced errors to Gauff's two.

Ostapenko was soon in trouble in the second set, suffering a service break in the opening game when Gauff's sublime drop shot left the Latvian scrambling to the net.

However Ostapenko finally got on the board with a break of serve in the next game only to surrender that momentum in the next game when Gauff broke her for the fifth time for a 2-1 lead.

The next three games went with serve before Gauff turned the screw to break for a 5-2 lead that left the teenager serving for the match.

Although Ostapenko defiantly saved two match points, Gauff clinched victory with a forehand winner.

Tennis: Coco Gauff beats Jelena Ostapenko to enter US Open semi-finals

Carlos Alcaraz surged into the quarter-finals of the US Open on Monday as upsets dominated the women's draw with Ons Jabeur and Jessica Pegula becoming the latest highly ranked players to go crashing out.

Defending champion Alcaraz, who has only dropped one set on his journey into the last eight, produced a dominant display to overwhelm Italian world No.61 Matteo Arnaldi, winning 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 in 1hr 57min.

The 20-year-old Alcaraz is bidding to become the first man since Roger Federer in 2008 to successfully defend the US Open after winning the title for the first time last year.

The identity of the Spaniard's quarter-final opponent will be confirmed later Monday, with Alcaraz due to face either Germany's Alexander Zverev or Italy's sixth seed Jannik Sinner in the last eight on Wednesday.

A match with Sinner would be a repeat of last year's quarter-final classic between the two men, which set a record as the latest ever finish for a US Open game after wrapping up at 2.50am.

"I think the intensity from the beginning until the last ball, I played a really solid match, less mistakes," Alcaraz said after Monday's brisk victory.

"I'm really happy with the performance in general."

In other men's matches on Monday, eighth-seeded Russian Andrey Rublev advanced with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 defeat of Britain's Jack Draper.

Rublev will now face an all-Russian quarter-final against close friend Daniil Medvedev, the third-seeded 2021 US Open champion who punched his ticket to the last eight with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Australian 13th seed Alex de Minaur.

Rublev, who has known Medvedev since childhood, is godfather to his quarter-final opponent's daughter.

<h2>Pegula sunk by friendly fire</h2>

In the women's draw meanwhile, more seeds bit the dust a day after world number one and defending champion Iga Swiatek was sent packing in the fourth round.

American third seed Jessica Pegula was routed in straight sets by compatriot and friend Madison Keys, while Tunisia's fifth seed Jabeur -- beaten in last year's final -- was ousted 6-2, 6-4 by China's Zheng Qinwen.

Pegula's campaign came to an abrupt halt in front of a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium as 2017 US Open finalist Keys recorded a dominant 6-1, 6-3 win in just 61 minutes.

Pegula was left with no answer as Keys unleashed a stream of 21 winners to her six.&nbsp;

Keys also punished her friend's shaky serve, breaking her five times on her way to wrapping up a comfortable victory.

"It's always tough having to play a friend but we've been doing it our whole lives at this point," Keys, 28, said.&nbsp;

The 17th-seeded Keys will now face Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.

Ninth seed Vondrousova booked her place in the last eight with a battling win over unseeded American Peyton Stearns, coming from a set down to win 6-7 (3/7), 6-3, 6-2.

Jabeur meanwhile, who has been struggling with flu since arriving in New York, finally saw her luck run out after scrapping her way to three-set victories in her previous two games.

The Tunisian simply had no answer to 23rd seed Zheng's blend of power and precision, with the 20-year-old from Shiyan looking far sharper than her weary opponent.

"Right now I feel just super happy and excited to play in a big stadium. I had a really good performance today," said Zheng.

Zheng is China's first US Open quarter-finalist since Wang Qiang in 2019. Two-time major champion Li Na reached the semi-finals in New York in 2013 and Peng Shuai did the same a year later.

Zheng's quarter-final assignment is a daunting date with second seed Aryna Sabalenka, who celebrated her rise to the pinnacle of women's tennis by routing Russia's Daria Kasatkina 6-1, 6-3 to secure her last eight berth.

Swiatek's exit on Sunday guarantees that the 25-year-old Belarusian will become the new world number one when the latest global rankings are released next week.

"It means a lot to me," Sabalenka said of her No.1 ranking after defeating Kasatkina.&nbsp;

"I've been pushing myself all this year to reach this goal. It's unbelievable, it's something crazy, I still can't believe it."

"It means a lot to me," Sabalenka said of her No.1 ranking after defeating Kasatkina. "I've been pushing myself all this year to reach this goal. It's unbelievable, it's something crazy, I still can't believe it." WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Qinwen Zheng takes down 2022 finalist Ons Jabeur in fourth round

Defending champion Iga Swiatek was sent crashing out of the US Open on Sunday, losing in three sets to Latvia's 20th seed Jelena Ostapenko. Ostapenko fought back after losing the opening set to record a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory in 1hr 48min and will now face American sixth seed Coco Gauff in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.

The defeat means Polish star Swiatek will end her 75-week reign as women's world number one when the rankings are updated after the US Open, with rival Aryna Sabalenka set to take over top spot.

Ostapenko's victory also extends her unbeaten record against Swiatek after wins in all three of her previous meetings with her.

"I always expect a tough battle against Iga, she's such a great player and won many Slams and is so consistent," Ostapenko said after her win on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court. "I knew I had to be aggressive and play my game because that's what she doesn't like.

"I was just thinking that I have to play until the very last point, until we shake hands. I felt like I was playing better and didn't give her many chances."

Swiatek had cruised into the fourth round after not dropping a set in her first three matches, looking in prime form to defend the title she won last year.

On Sunday she finally looked ready to score a first victory over Ostapenko, playing confidently to take the first set.

But Ostapenko snatched an early break in the second set and then held for a 3-0 lead and Swiatek was always struggling thereafter.

She managed to break Ostapenko and served to level at 4-4, but instead was broken again to give the Latvian a 5-3 lead.

Ostapenko then survived a break point to close out the set at 6-3.

In the third, Swiatek had no answer to Ostapenko as she broke the champion twice in the first three games to take 3-0 lead.

She then broke Swiatek in the fifth game to go 5-0 ahead.

Although Ostapenko was broken as she served for the match, Swiatek again struggled on serve and was broken again to go tumbling out.

US Open: Defending champion Iga Swiatek crashes out in round of 16, loses to Jelena Ostapenko 3-6, 6-3, 6-1

World number one Carlos Alcaraz aced his first real test at the U.S. Open on Saturday powering past Britain's Daniel Evans while women's second seed Aryna Sabalenka schooled France's Clara Burel to move into the fourth round of the year's final Grand Slam.

Third seed Daniil Medvedev once again worked the U.S. Open graveyard shift on Saturday, beating in-form Sebastian Baez 6-2 6-2 7-6(6) to end the Argentine's 12 match winning streak. It was the second consecutive match Medvedev started one day and finished it the next, having gone four sets with Australian Christopher O'Connell in a late night battle on Thursday that wrapped early Friday morning.

While not quite yet back to his best, Alcaraz's form and confidence have been building with each match as he bids to become the first man to defend his U.S. Open title since Roger Federer won five straight from 2004 to 2008.

Against the 26th seeded Evans, the 20-year-old Spaniard mixed moments of brilliance with lapses in focus but was never really threatened on his way to 6-2 6-3 4-6 6-3 win. Alcaraz's victory contributed to a brutal day for the British contingent with only young gun Jack Draper preventing a third round wipeout with a 6-4 6-2 3-6 6-3 win over American wild card Michael Mmoh.

Draper arrived in New York unsure if he could compete after suffering a small tear in his shoulder that forced him out of the Winston-Salem tune-up event but on Saturday the 21-year-old was the last Briton standing.

Top seeded Briton, number 16 Cameron Norrie, was dumped out 6-3 6-4 6-3 by Italian Matteo Arnaldi while American Peyton Stearns pushed the last British woman Katie Boulter to the exit with a 6-4 6-3 victory.

In contrast to the British woes it was another bright day for the home fans as third seed Jessica Pegula led another American push into the last 16, stopping Ukraine's Elina Svitolina 6-4 4-6 6-2.

Joining Pegula were 2017 finalist Madison Keys, a 5-7 6-2 6-2 winner over 14th seed Liudmila Samsonova, Stearns and sixth seed Coco Gauff, who booked her spot on Friday with a win over Elise Mertens.

With four American men and the same number of women reaching the fourth round, home fans can dream of a Flushing Meadows trophy sweep no matter how far-fetched that idea might seem.

Not since 2002 when Pete Sampras and Serena Williams were crowned U.S. Open champions have Americans hoisted both trophies but with Pegula, Coco Gauff, Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe all top 10 seeds and in the last 16, the chance will be there.

With Tommy Paul and Ben Shelton also advancing there will four American men in the fourth at the U.S. Open for the first time since 2011.

The last time Flushing Meadows had a chance to celebrate a homegrown women's champion was in 2017 when Sloane Stephens beat Keys in an all-American final while the men's title drought extends back two decades to Andy Roddick's victory in 2003.

In other action sixth seed Jannik Sinner took down 2017 U.S. Open champion Stan Wawrinka 6-3 2-6 6-4 6-2 to set up an intriguing fourth round meeting with 12th seeded German Alexander Zverev, who was a 6-7(2) 7-6(8) 6-1 6-1 winner over Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov.

Ons Jabeur kept her dream of a first Grand Slam alive at the US Open on Saturday, reaching the last 16 after finally overcoming injured opponent Marie Bouzkova in three sets.

Tunisian fifth seed Jabeur, whose US Open campaign has been disrupted by a flu virus, completed a 5-7, 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 victory to subdue Bouzkova in 2 hours and 56 minutes.

A contest of high drama on the Arthur Ashe Stadium saw Bouzkova play virtually half of the match on one leg after suffering a thigh injury midway through the second set.

The 25-year-old Czech 31st seed left the court for a lengthy medical timeout after clutching her thigh in pain.

She appeared to be close to tears when she returned, but somehow managed to battle bravely on despite severely limited mobility.

Bouzkova was often seen grimacing and wincing in pain whenever she needed to push off her injured leg, but remarkably continued to complete the match.

At one point she consulted her coaching staff in the stands and said simply: "I have to."&nbsp;

"Man it was a very tough match," Jabeur said afterwards. "We both played really well. She didn't want to stop. She's a great player."

Jabeur admitted she had been incredulous at times as Bouzkova soldiered on despite her injury.

"When I saw her struggling with her leg I tried to make her move as much as I can," Jabeur said. "I know that's not nice but I was trying to win the match.&nbsp;

"At certain times I was like 'Is she really injured?' I wasn't sure."

Jabeur, who also needed three sets in round two after a difficult opening match earlier this week, once again found herself in trouble early on against Bouzkova.

But the injury changed the complexion of the match, even though the ailing Bouzkova took her to a tie-break in the second set.

Jabeur grabbed an early break in the final set, and then served for the match in the ninth game.&nbsp;

There was another twist as Bouzkova saved two match points after trailing 15-40, but Jabeur finally clinched victory on her third match point.

Jabeur will now face China's Zheng Qinwen in the last 16 on Monday.

Tennis: Ons Jabeur enters US Open last 16

A tenacious Novak Djokovic survived a U.S. Open late night fright battling back from two sets down to tame fellow Serb Laslo Djere 4-6 4-6 6-1 6-1 6-3 on Friday, and move into the fourth round at Flushing Meadows.

On the ropes and reeling Djokovic, as he has done many times before, snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in front a record crowd inside a breathless Arthur Ashe Stadium court.

It marked the 38th time Djokovic has won a five-setter and kept alive the 36-year-old's quest for a fourth U.S. Open crown that would pull him level with Margaret Court's record haul of 24 Grand Slams.

"I hope you enjoyed the show, it was not so enjoyable for me especially in the first two sets," Djokovic told the crowd. "It was one of the toughest matches I have played here in many years."

Djokovic had looked imperious in his opening two matches surrendering only 11 games in blowout wins over Frenchman Alexandre Muller and Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles but his 32nd seeded countryman proved a far tougher test.

The two Serbs had only clashed once before in Belgrade last year but there were signs then that Djere was a danger, with the contest needing three sets and two tie-breaks before Djokovic claimed the win.

Djere signalled to Djokovic he was in for more of the same on Friday when he broke the second-seed to start the match and then held his nerve the rest of set for an unexpected and well-earned 1-0 lead.

Facing one of the greatest players of all-time under the bright lights of tennis's biggest stage, a fearless Djere could not be rattled piling on the pressure with another break to go up 4-3 in the second on the way to a 2-0 lead that left Arthur Ashe Stadium stunned.

Djokovic was not without his opportunities, but did not capitalise on his chances until backed into a corner.

With the crowd still buzzing, Djokovic came out for the third set with an urgency and energy missing in the opening two sets, breaking Djere at the first opportunity and again to go up 4-0 on the way to cutting the deficit to 2-1.

"I did a little pep talk in the mirror," said Djokovic about his bathroom break after the second set. "I kind of laughed at myself because I was agitated and annoyed with the result, I had to kind of force myself to lift myself, to lift the spirits up."

With cracks in Djere's game starting to appear, Djokovic continued to dial up the pressure breaking again to open the fourth set pulling a mighty fist pump from the 36-year-old.

But Djere was not done immediately breaking back, setting the stage for what was a marathon third game that saw Djokovic regain control with yet another break.

Moving in for the kill Djokovic swept the next six games to take the fourth set and a 2-0 lead in the decisive fifth that he would never surrender.

"Once I got the break in the third I thought 'OK, I have a shot, I have a chance," said Djokovic. "I might as well go after it."

"I started to play a bit more aggressive, started to read his games slightly more than I had in the first two sets and it worked well.

"But trust me, it was nerve wracking all the way till the last shot," he added.

"I kind of laughed at myself because I was agitated and annoyed with the result, I had to kind of force myself to lift myself, to lift the spirits up." With cracks in Djere's game starting to appear, Djokovic continued to dial up the pressure breaking again to open the fourth set pulling a mighty fist pump from the 36-year-old. "I might as well go after it." "I started to play a bit more aggressive, started to read his games slightly more than I had in the first two sets and it worked well. "But trust me, it was nerve wracking all the way till the last shot," he added. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Novak Djokovic escapes early US Open exit as he beats compatriot Laslo Djere to enter last 16

Top seed and defending champion Iga Swiatek surged closer towards a US Open showdown with Coco Gauff on Friday while 23-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic targeted a place in the last 16.

Swiatek briefly put sentiment to one side as she demolished 145th-ranked Slovenian qualifier and best friend Kaja Juvan 6-0, 6-1 in just 49 minutes to storm into the fourth round.

"I didn't like the fact that I was kind of winning with my best friend," said world number one Swiatek.&nbsp;"It was like playing against a sister because I've known her for so long. I don't have many friends but she's my best friend so that was the toughest part for sure," she said.&nbsp;

The Pole is bidding to become the first woman to successfully defend her US Open crown since Serena Williams won a hat-trick of titles from 2012-2014.

She could meet 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko next ahead of a potential quarter-final clash with in-form home favourite Gauff.&nbsp;

Sixth seed Gauff plays Belgium's Elise Mertens to kick off the evening session on Arthur Ashe.

Czech 10th seed Karolina Muchova&nbsp;qualified for the last 16 courtesy of a 7-6 (7/0), 6-3 win over Taylor Townsend.

She goes on to play China's Wang Xinyu who battled into the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time by coming from a set down to oust Slovakia's Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The 21-year-old from Shenzhen had never been further than the first round at the US Open before this year.

American 14th seed Tommy Paul advanced with a four-set win over Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, heading into week two of the tournament for the first time as well.

<h2>Djokovic faces fellow Serb&nbsp;</h2>

Djokovic can take another stride towards a record-extending men's 24th Grand Slam crown when he meets Laslo Djere in an-all Serbian match-up in the night session on Arthur Ashe.

"I'm pleased with the way I'm feeling, playing on the court," said Djokovic, who has dropped only 11 games through the first two rounds. "Can always be better, but first two rounds didn't spend too much time on the court and played very solid and hopefully I can keep building," he added.

Djere, the 32nd seed, is trying to reach the fourth round of a major for the first time in a career marked by the trauma of losing both of his parents to cancer by the time he was 23.

"He had a lot of struggles with his family and private issues. You know, had to endure all of that," Djokovic said. "It says a lot about his mental resilience. It's great for Serbian tennis that we have a matchup in the third round. So one Serbian is going to be definitely in the fourth round, which is always great for our tennis," he stated.

American No.1 Taylor Fritz later plays teenage Czech qualifier Jakub Mensik, the world number 206 and youngest man to reach the US Open third round since 1990. Mensik celebrated his 18th birthday on Friday.

Former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, who received a walkover in the second round, also faces Romanian veteran Sorana Cirstea under the lights on Louis Armstrong.

Remorseful Iga Swiatek romps at US Open as Novak Djokovic eyes last 16

Carlos Alcaraz moved into the U.S. Open third round on Thursday with an entertaining 6-3 6-1 7-6(4) win over Lloyd Harris in a match that also revealed a lack of sharpness which the Spaniard will need to rectify if he is to successfully defend his crown.

Some dazzling shot making from the world number one had the crowd on its feet but behind the fun-filled evening were some worrying flaws as Alcaraz piled up 29 unforced errors and showed a lack of concentration at key moments.

Even while not at his best Alcaraz could rely on raw talent and a vast repertoire of shots to see off the 177th ranked South African. But the 20-year-old will need to improve with rival Novak Djokovic on the prowl for a 24th Grand Slam and seeking revenge for his Wimbledon loss to the Spaniard.

After the match Alcaraz focused on the positives, rating his effort as "great" but admitting to a letdown in the third set.

"I think I played great, a great match," assessed the Spaniard. "But obviously in the third set he started to play better. I got down a little bit. "I need extra energy in the third set.

"In the end, I think I played a pretty good match and will try to keep the same level."

Under Arthur Ashe Stadium's bright lights Alcaraz found himself under even greater scrutiny after an unconvincing build-up to the season's final Grand Slam.

In two tune-up events his results - reaching the Canadian Open quarter-finals and losing to Djokovic in the Cincinnati final - were positive but the performances spotty with seven of eight matches needing three sets to get the job done.

Of the 23 sets played eight required tiebreaks.

There was little to learn from Alcaraz's opening match on Tuesday against Dominic Koepfer, which was cut short when the German retired with an ankle injury.

Harris is recovering from wrist surgery and has seen his ranking drop but the big-hitting South African is a proven danger man, reaching the quarter-finals in 2021 and having a few top 10 wins on his resume, including one over Rafa Nadal.

The contest got off to a cautious start before Alcaraz began to settle into the match, taking control of the first set with a break to go up 3-2.

From that point on he dialled up the pressure and clinched the set with a second break.

Alcaraz continued to dominate in the second but lost focus in the third, committing 16 of his 29 unforced errors, as Harris threatened to take the contest to a fourth set before losing the tie-break 7-4.

There will be no room for such lapses in third round for Alcaraz with 26th seed Dan Evans waiting in the wings.

"It's a really tough player, good serve and volley, good net game," said Alcaraz. "It's going to be really tough.

"I will have to return very, very well if I want to win that match."

The United States of America's former First Lady of America Michelle Obama has lauded Billie Jean King's battle for pay equality in the country. Michelle spoke about the uphill battle that women's tennis players faced 50 years ago. Back then men were paid up to eight times more than women in this sport. Billy Jean King was a driving force behind the move to equalize prize money for men's and women's competitors.

Tennis: America's Jack Sock set to retire after US Open

Tennis greats Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert have spoken out against the prospect of the WTA Tour staging its end-of-season finals in Saudi Arabia.

WTA chief Steve Simon said in June the organisation was "evaluating" the possibility of taking a tournament to Saudi Arabia, while describing the subject as "difficult and challenging."

Recent reports have said Saudi Arabia is in pole position to land the tour's prestigious WTA Finals tournament, which sees the top eight women players in the world battle it out in a season-ending championship.

However US legends Navratilova and Evert have both voiced objection to a possible move.

"I can tell you 100 per cent if I were still playing, I would not be going (to Saudi Arabia) for the Championships," Navratilova told US tennis journalist Jon Wertheim.

Evert also said she would not support the finals heading to Saudi Arabia, which has lavished hundreds of millions of dollars on sporting events in recent years as part of a strategy critics describe as "sportswashing."

"I would prefer not to go to Saudi Arabia to play the WTA finals," she said during a ESPN media event ahead of the US Open.

"Not that I'm going to go play, but for me, I would prefer the WTA not go to Saudi Arabia."

"Obviously they have the human rights issues and everything, just the way they treat women. I would be against it. But I don't have a vote."

Leading women's players however have been more supportive.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the US Open on Friday, Tunisia's Ons Jabeur reiterated her stance that she would support a tournament in Saudi Arabia.

"As an Arab player, I'm very excited to be there. I am someone pushing for a change, pushing to give more and more opportunities especially for women," Jabeur said.

<h2>A great step</h2>

While a move to Saudi Arabia would be controversial given criticism of the Gulf state's record on women's rights, Jabeur insisted that sport could help power change.

"I know in Saudi they're changing things and they're evolving," she said.

"I've been there last year to give a speech and interview. It was very nice meeting a lot of amazing women there. For me, I was trying to push to have something, tennis, there in Saudi.

"I think it's a great step. I think it's something that could help the Arab world to have more tennis players, to get more involved in sports."

American world number three Jessica Pegula said she would not oppose a move to Saudi Arabia if the tournament could have a demonstrable impact on women's rights.

"I think that if you look at a pros and cons list, we'd obviously have to see there be a lot of pros overweighing the cons to feel comfortable going there," Pegula said.&nbsp;

"Whether that's seeing them as a group maybe have to donate money to women's sports or women's rights in Saudi Arabia, to see some sort of change or action going towards helping those causes in their country.&nbsp;

"I think that would be something really important that, if we did end up going there, we would want to see."

Pegula however acknowledged that the decision may ultimately come down to money.

"It's unfortunate that a lot of women's sports, like we don't have the luxury to say no to some things," she said.

"Again, I think if the money was right and the arrangement was something that we could get behind where we could go and create change, then I would be okay playing there."

World number one Iga Swiatek declined to be drawn on the issue, however, merely voicing frustration that players were still waiting for a decision from the WTA.

"I don't have a lot of thoughts because we hear many stuff on tour," Swiatek said. "I'm still waiting for the final decision.

"For sure it's pretty unfortunate and annoying we don't have any decision yet."

On Thursday, the ATP, which runs the men's tour, said the season-ending Next Gen Finals will be hosted by the Saudi city of Jeddah until 2027.

This year's tournament will take place from November 28 to December 2, with a record $2 million prize money.

Jeddah's successful bid makes history as the first official professional tennis&nbsp;event to take place in Saudi Arabia.

Tennis: Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert against move to hold WTA Finals in Saudi

Novak Djokovic says he is treating every Grand Slam tournament like it's his last as he prepares to make a long-awaited return to the US Open next week. The Serbian star, winner of a record 23 Grand Slam singles titles, is bidding to add a 24th to his collection in New York over the next fortnight, which would put him two clear of Rafael Nadal's 22 Slam titles.

At 36, Djokovic said on Friday he is increasingly aware that opportunities to improve his record may become harder to come by even if he is not contemplating retirement.

"I don't know how many more slams I'll have," Djokovic told a press conference. "I'll still keep going. I don't have an end in my mind at the moment."

"I also understand that things are different when you're 36, so I have to be more appreciative, a bit more, I guess, present, treating every Grand Slam as maybe your last one in terms of commitment and performance."

"I see this every Grand Slam that I play right now as really a golden opportunity to make more history."

Djokovic has not played at the US Open since 2021, when his bid to complete a rare calendar year Grand Slam of all four tennis majors was foiled by Daniil Medvedev in an agonizing defeat in the final.

Djokovic was subsequently barred from entry to the United States over his refusal to get vaccinated -- putting him at odds with US government's Covid-19 travel rules -- meaning he missed last year's US Open.

<h2>- 'Electric atmosphere' -</h2>

Djokovic, who opens his campaign on the Arthur Ashe main arena against France's Alexandre Muller on Monday, says he is relishing his return to what he described as the most "electric" atmosphere in tennis.

"The first feeling that I have is excitement to come back because it is the biggest arena we have in our sport, the biggest stadium, and definitely the most fun, electric, exciting atmosphere out there in tennis, playing night session in Arthur Ashe, no doubt," Djokovic said. &nbsp;"Come back in front of probably the loudest fans in sport, tennis fans in sport."

With Djokovic absent in 2022, Spain's Carlos Alcaraz emerged to claim the US Open crown.

Since then, Djokovic and Alcaraz have developed a fierce rivalry, with the Spaniard winning a five-set classic in the Wimbledon final last month, before Djokovic bounced back with a pulsating win in the Cincinnati Open final last weekend.

Djokovic said last week's defeat of Alcaraz in Cincinnati in a near four-hour epic felt like winning a Grand Slam.

"It was one of the best, most exciting, and most difficult finals I was ever part of in best-of-three, no doubt, throughout my career," Djokovic said. "The amount of exchanges and rallies. It was physically so demanding and gruelling that I felt very exhausted for the next few days.

"Those are kind of the moments in matches that I still push myself on a daily basis for day in and day out, practice, sacrifice, commitment. At 36, still have the drive. I love competition."

While most neutrals will be craving a Djokovic-Alcaraz rematch in the US Open final on September 10, Djokovic insists he is looking no further than Monday's opener.

"I think it's also in a way disrespectful to your next opponent if you're already thinking about your finals matchup," Djokovic said. "Even though I've had tremendous success ... that kind of mindset never really resonated with me.

"But Carlos is No. 1 in the world. He's definitely one of the best players in the world the last couple years.

"Sure, there's always an eye that follows him from my team, from any other team. I know that the same goes for me probably. We follow each other."

I don't know how many more slams I'll have: Veteran Novak Djokovic ahead of US Open return

Novak Djokovic makes a long-awaited return to the US Open next week looking to reclaim the title and world number one ranking from defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. The 36-year-old Serbian superstar was barred from entry to the United States for much of the past two years after his refusal to comply with a Covid-19 vaccination mandate.

The 23-time Grand Slam singles title winner could only watch from afar last year as Spanish star Alcaraz was crowned as the new King of New York with his maiden triumph at a tennis major.

Since that breakthrough victory, Alcaraz and Djokovic have developed the sport's most compelling new rivalry, pushing each other to the limit in an epic five-set Wimbledon final last month that ended with Alcaraz triumphing 1-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.

The two men produced another pulsating thriller in the final of the Cincinnati Open last weekend, with Djokovic saving a match point before digging out a 5-7, 7-6 (9/7), 7-6 (7/4) victory in just under four hours.

For Djokovic, Alcaraz's performances are confirmation of his belief that the 20-year-old Spaniard is the real deal, the player best positioned to succeed him as the dominant force in men's tennis.

The Serb said Alcaraz's knack of rising to the occasion in the most demanding of circumstances reminds him of his gruelling battles with Rafael Nadal, who will miss the US Open with a hip injury.

"Each point, the feeling that I have on the court reminds me a little bit when I was facing Nadal when we were at our prime of our careers," Djokovic said. "Each point is a hustle. Each point is a battle. You feel like you're not going to get maybe in total five free points in the entire match. You've got to basically earn every single point, every single shot, regardless of the conditions."

<h2>- Embracing challenge -</h2>

Djokovic said Alcaraz's development this season, particularly his poise under pressure, is even more impressive given his youth.

"It doesn't surprise me anymore," Djokovic said. "It was surprising maybe at the end of last year or beginning of this year, what he was doing, the way he won big matches, big tournaments. So impressive -- coming out in important moments, going for it, brave.

"You just have to put your hats down to a guy like that, that plays so maturely, handles the pressure so well for a 20-year-old.

"We cannot forget how young he is. That's something that is so impressive about him."

If the tournament follows the seedings, Djokovic and Alcaraz will meet for only the fifth time in what would be a blockbuster final in the last Grand Slam of 2023.

They have split the four previous meetings, winning two apiece.

Alcaraz defeated Djokovic in an attritional three-set semi-final on clay in Madrid last year, while Djokovic prevailed in a four-setter at Roland Garros this year.

"All of the matches we played against each other went the distance," Djokovic said. &nbsp;"It just keeps getting better for the fans. For us, I don't know if we are enjoying it so much.

"It's definitely a challenge that we both need to embrace and accept because that's what's required from both of us in order to win big titles."

Alcaraz meanwhile is flattered by Djokovic's comparison of him to Nadal, the 22-time Grand Slam singles champion.

"It's great that he knows that every time he's going to play against me, it reminds him playing against Rafa or against the best ones because that means we are in a good path," Alcaraz said.

Djokovic is almost certain to reclaim his world number one ranking in New York, needing only a victory over first round opponent Alexandre Muller to be assured of regaining top spot regardless of how Alcaraz performs.

Alcaraz's route to a potential final showdown with Djokovic is arguably trickier, with 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev and Italy's Jannik Sinner -- who took Alcaraz to five sets in last year's quarter-finals -- both in his side of the draw.

"It's definitely a challenge that we both need to embrace and accept because that's what's required from both of us in order to win big titles." Alcaraz meanwhile is flattered by Djokovic's comparison of him to Nadal, the 22-time Grand Slam singles champion. Alcaraz stands in between Novak Djokovic and 24th Slam title as Serbian returns to US Open after 2-year gap

Former world no. 1 tennis player Simona Halep was dropped from the upcoming US&nbsp;Open field on Monday, August 21 as she's under a provisional doping suspension. The two-time Grand Slam champion was withdrawn from the tournament's qualifying draw automatically because of her ban announced by the US&nbsp;Tennis Association.

Taylor Townsend has been given Halep's spot in the main draw of the event which begins on August 28 in Flushing Meadows, New York. As per the rules, &nbsp;a banned player, even though provisional, for whatsoever reason, is&nbsp;ineligible to compete in or attend any sanctioned events.

This is not the first time the former ace player has been accused of doping. She first tested positive for Roxadustat, a banned substance, at the last year's US&nbsp;Open as per the International Tennis Integrity Agency. The Romanian was seeded 7th at the last grand slam of the year in 2022 which she exited after losing to Daria Snigur of Ukraine in the first round.

She was again accused of a second offence in May earlier this year for irregularities in her Athlete Biological Passport.

The drug which Halep was accused of taking, Roxadustat, is, however, an approved drug in the European Union. The drug is used to treat the symptoms of anaemia caused by chronic kidney failure.

The 31-year-old was ranked number 1 in 2017 and won her two grand slams after that. The first major she won was the 2018 French Open in which Halep beat Sloane Stephens in the final. For her second title, Wimbledon 2019, she defeated Serena Williams in the final.

Alcaraz will remain number one in the world and will be the top seed while defending his title at the US Open, which starts on August 28.

Djokovic, who declined to be vaccinated against COVID-19, was playing his first US tournament in two years.

Tennis: Former world no. 1 Simona Halep 'automatically out' of US Open field due to provisional doping ban

Carlos Alcaraz saved a match point on the way to a three-set victory over Hubert Hurkacz on Saturday as he lined up title clash with Novak Djokovic at the ATP Cincinnati Masters. World number one Alcaraz held on for a 2-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 victory over Hurkacz, rallying to beat the big-serving Pole for the second time in as many weeks.

World number two Djokovic beat Germany's Alexander Zverev 7-6 (7/5), 7-5 to reach the final, which will be a repeat of last month's epic Wimbledon final won by Alcaraz.

Alcaraz has won two of three career meetings with Djokovic, but the Serb was looking forward to their first hard court clash.

"It's the ultimate challenge at the moment for me," Djokovic said, noting he'd beaten Alcaraz on clay at the US Open this year before falling in five sets on grass at Wimbledon.

"Now it's going to be the first encounter on a hard court. It's a very good test prior to the US Open," Djokovic said. "Obviously different conditions.

"It's still facing the top player of the world now who is in form. It's the biggest challenge I could get, so I'm looking forward to it."

Djokovic was trying for a second time to serve out the match against Zverev when he was distracted by a nearby amusement park's fireworks display, but managed to regain his focus and finish it off.

He'd dropped his serve two games earlier, only to come back with a break of his own.

"I played a very poor game, but I bounced back and sealed the deal in the 12th game of the second set," Djokovic said. "I could have done some things better, but I'm pretty happy about winning in straight sets."

Alcaraz's victory, after two hours and 18 minutes over Hurkacz, ensures the 20-year-old will remain atop the world rankings heading into the US Open, which starts a week from Monday. He notched his 53rd match win of the season against five defeats, but it was another hard slog for the Spaniard.

"It's been a really tough tournament for me, all my matches going three sets," Alcaraz said. "But I'm happy to win these kind of matches by staying strong mentally.

"I've grown up a lot with these experiences. It's great to be in the final," he added.

After dropping the first set, Alcaraz was on the brink in the 10th game of the second, but Hurkacz fired wide on a match point and they went to a tiebreaker.

Cincinnati Open 2023: Carlos Alcaraz sets up summit clash date with Novak Djokovic

Iga Swiatek proved to be a quick learner as she ousted Wimbledon champion&nbsp;Marketa Vondrousova 7-6 (7/2), 6-1 on Friday to reach the ATP/WTA Cincinnati Open semi-finals.

The top seed from Poland said she took lessons from a struggling performance in the first set and applied them perfectly in the second to sweep into the final four in a battle of current Grand Slam champions.

Swiatek, the US Open and Roland Garros holder, will play on Saturday for a place in the finals against either US seventh seed Coco Gauff or Italian qualifier Jasmine Paolini.

Swiatek lost serve twice in the opening set as she struggled with the lefty game of her Czech opponent,&nbsp;but broke as Vondrousova served for the set and eventually won a&nbsp;tie-breaker.

She then dominated in the second to claim victory after 93 minutes.

"I'm really happy with the performance," she said. "It's not easy to adjust to her spin.

"After the first&nbsp;set, I was determined to fight for every ball."

Swiatek said the second set was an entirely different story for her.

"I was more focused and I knew what worked," she said. "I learned from the first set. I knew exactly how I should play. That's&nbsp;why it was such a good performance."

Swiatek now stands 2-0 in the series after a victory in Paris three years ago. She was competing in her 12th quarter-final of the season from 13 events played.

Tennis: Iga Swiatek learns on the job to reach Cincinnati Open semis, beats Wimbledon champion Vondrousova

The issue of matches finishing late at night has been discussed at the U.S. Open but tournament director Stacey Allaster said the year's final Grand Slam has no plans to change its schedule. The night session at Flushing Meadows begins at 7 p.m., meaning matches can stretch into the early hours of the following morning. Last year's champion Carlos Alcaraz beat Jannik Sinner in a five-set quarter-final that lasted more than five hours and concluded at 2:50 a.m, the latest finish in U.S. Open history.

Late finishing matches are also common at the Australian Open, with Andy Murray describing his 4:05 a.m. finish in a contest against Thanasi Kokkinakis this year as a "farce". Players have faced similar issues at tour events, with Elena Rybakina saying she felt "destroyed" by the Montreal schedule after her quarter-final ended at 3 a.m. last week.

"Without question late-night matches were heavily discussed and reviewed after the 2022 U.S. Open," Allaster told reporters. "We looked at starting the evening session earlier, instead of 7 p.m. start at 6 p.m., but it's not really a possibility because it's hard for New Yorkers to get here even at 7 p.m.

"We talked about one match at night, but we felt that's not fair to our fans." Women's world number one Iga Swiatek last week called for better scheduling at events for the sake of player health. "One of the realities we have in tennis is that we're not defined by a start and an end time. We can have a short match or we can have a five-hour match," Allaster said.

"At the moment, we're staying the course with two-night matches. We'll continue to evaluate it." The U.S. Open takes place from Aug. 28-Sept. 10.
