Defending champion Borna Coric battled past American Sebastian Korda 7-6(5) 6-4 in the Cincinnati Open first round on Tuesday, as Taylor Fritz survived a first-set thriller to beat Czech Jiri Lehecka 7-6(14) 6-2. Croatian Coric crashed out in Toronto in the first round earlier this month but produced a pristine performance in Cincinnati with few unforced errors, wrapping up the match that began on Monday but was suspended due to bad weather.

Korda, who has suffered a handful of early exits since reaching the Queen's Club semi-finals, appeared to have the edge as he converted a break point in the third game. But 15th seed Coric levelled in the sixth and mounted a fine defence to rally from a 4-1 deficit in the tiebreak.

He won the critical break point in the third game of the second set, where he dropped only one first-serve point as Korda's level declined across the board, and pumped his fist as he closed the affair with an unreturnable serve. Coric next faces either Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis or Poland's Hubert Hurkacz, who were set to play later on Tuesday.

Earlier on Tuesday, top American Fritz mustered all of his resources in an epic 30-point first set tiebreak with Lehecka. The Monte Carlo semi-finalist saved five set points in the tense and closely fought first set, where he produced fewer unforced errors to get the upper hand. The momentum belonged to Fritz in the second set, though, when he never faced a break point and won all but one of his first-serve points.

Tennis: Holder Borna Coric beats Sebastian Korda in Cincinnati opener, Taylor Fritz outlasts Jiri Lehecka

Andy&nbsp;Murray&nbsp;pulled out of the Cincinnati Open late on Monday as the Briton continues to recover from an abdominal strain in a bid to compete in the U.S. Open that begins later this month. Murray, 36, withdrew from last week's Canadian Open before his round of 16 clash with eventual champion Jannik Sinner due to the issue he picked up after spending nearly five hours on court in wins over Lorenzo Sonego and Max Purcell.

The three-times Grand Slam champion and former world number one travelled to Cincinnati where he hoped to be fit in time to face Russian Karen Khachanov but he will now be replaced by a lucky loser, men's tennis governing body ATP said. Murray&nbsp;is currently number 36 in the world - his highest ranking since hip resurfacing surgery in 2019 - and was named in Britain's Davis Cup team for their Finals group stage ties that will take place after the Aug. 28-Sept. 10 U.S. Open.

Tennis: Abdominal strain forces three-time Grand Slam winner Andy Murray out of Cincinnati

Italian seventh seed Jannik Sinner beat Tommy Paul 6-4 6-4 on Saturday to set up a Canadian Open final clash with Australia's Alex De Minaur, who was a 6-1 6-3 winner over Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Sinner outlasted Paul in a slugfest that was a showcase of power from both sides and at one point saw the duo engage in a 46-shot rally that marked the longest of the week in Toronto.

"It was a fight obviously," said Sinner, who saved eight of 11 break points in the win. "He was playing great as I do and at the end, you know match point, when I got there I was praying please. But thank God I won in two (sets)."

Sinner and Paul twice exchanged breaks in the opening set but it was the Italian who held serve when it mattered most as he took a 5-4 lead before clinching the set with another break. Sinner led 2-1 in the second set when Paul called for the tour physio who worked on his right hip while he lay sprawled on his left side in discomfort.

Paul was unable to hold serve in the next game, handing over the break with a double fault, before a determined Sinner went on to consolidate for a commanding 4-1 lead. From there, the Italian continued to display great length and pace on his ground strokes and turned aside three break points, including one during a 46-shot rally, for a 5-2 lead that sent him on his way.

"I tried so hard to win that point," Sinner said. "Just tried to play one more ball in the court than him and that was I guess the solution."

De Minaur overcame blustery conditions to secure a breakthrough victory over Davidovich Fokina and reach the first Masters 1000 final of his career. De Minaur, who was fresh off an upset over second seed Daniil Medvedev, delivered a simple gameplan in rather tricky conditions, while Davidovich Fokina struggled to find any sort of rhythm throughout the 78-minute match.

"First thing I knew once I stepped out on court it wasn't going to be pretty, so I didn't expect perfect tennis from my side of the court today," said De Minaur, who wrote "so windy" on an on-court camera lens after the match.&nbsp; "I just told myself to stay positive, keep competing no matter what and you never know what's going to happen. "So I thought I had a great mindset today ... Didn't play the best of tennis, but I did what needed to be done today in these conditions."

De Minaur wasted no time setting the tone against Davidovich Fokina as he broke the Spaniard twice en route to a 5-1 lead before serving out the opening set on his first opportunity. The 24-year-old Australian maintained the pressure as he broke Davidovich Fokina four times to build a 5-2 lead in the second before sealing the match with his seventh break.

"I've had a hell of a week. It's been the breakthrough that I always knew I had inside of me so it's great to show it and play for a final," De Minaur said.

Jessica Pegula beat world number one Iga Swiatek 6-2 6-7(4) 6-4 on Saturday to reach the Canadian Open final in Montreal, where ongoing rain delayed the start of the other semi-final between Elena Rybakina and Liudmila Samsonova until Sunday.

Rybakina and Samsonova are now scheduled to begin their match at 1:30 p.m. ET (1730 GMT) on Sunday, leaving the winner with little downtime before the final, which will begin "after suitable rest" and not before 5:30 p.m. American world number three Pegula, playing in her third consecutive Canadian Open semi-final, broke Swiatek's serve 11 times and managed her way through the big moments of the match better than the four-times Grand Slam winner.

"She always makes it tough but of course it's incredibly rewarding to beat the number one player in the world and I am sure that will give me a lot of confidence going into tomorrow and the next couple weeks," Pegula said securing a spot in her first Canadian Open final.

Neither player was able to defend their serve until Pegula held to love for a 4-2 lead and the American followed that by going up a double break before producing a pair of aces to close out the first set on her next service game.

Swiatek looked to have settled into a groove as she opened the second set with her first service hold of the day followed by a pair of breaks for a 3-1 lead. Pegula, however, clawed back and opened up a 5-4 lead after breaking Swiatek for the eighth time but was unable to serve out the match as the Pole levelled the frame before going on to force the decider.

Swiatek won the first eight points of the third set to build a 2-0 lead but Pegula kept cool and twice came back from a break down en route to securing one of the biggest wins of her career. Rybakina reached the semis with a win over Daria Kasatkina in a match that lasted nearly three and a half hours and ended just before 3 a.m. on Saturday.

Samsonova booked her place in the final four with a win over Belinda Bencic during Friday's night session after beating Aryna Sabalenka in the day session. Samsonova has won both her previous meetings with Rybakina, including a first-round clash in Montreal two years ago.

Tennis: Jannik Sinner thrashes Tommy Paul to set up Canadian Open final clash with Alex De Minaur

Frustrated world number one Carlos Alcaraz was knocked out of the ATP Toronto Masters on Friday as American Tommy Paul won 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to end&nbsp;the Spaniard's 14-match winning streak. Top-seeded Alcaraz was unable to escape the poor form that has plagued him all week as he prepares for a US Open title defence starting in just over two weeks.

The 20-year-old muttered to himself and chastised his play during a match lasting more than two and a quarter hours.

Paul, ranked 14th, repeated his victory over the Spaniard a year ago in the Montreal second round and now awaits a semi-final opponent from sixth seed Jannik Sinner and French showman Gael Monfils.

"I don't know if I think I have the recipe, but I played a really good match today," Paul said after notching another Canadian win over Alacraz. "I went after my shots. You can't start any points on your heels against him, he'll take advantage of it so you've really got to go after your shots early in the rally."

"Luckily I was feeling really good, playing first-strike tennis."

Alcaraz struggled early for the second straight match after barely&nbsp;escaping a third-round encounter with Hubert Hurkacz. The reigning Wimbledon and US Open champion had 27 winners and 30 unforced errors while Paul's numbers were 19 and 29. After losing serve three times in the opening set, Alcaraz recovered enough to take the second. But the Spaniard was well off his game, floating a volley wide to trail 4-2 in the final set.

Paul took quick advantage, advancing on his second match point from an Alcaraz return wide.

"I knew he would be there in the third set," Paul said, adding: "It helps to have beaten an opponent before. That attitude is important."

<h2>- Medvedev ousted -</h2>

Second-seeded Daniil Medvedev was also sent spinning out of the tournament, falling 7-6 (9/7), 7-5 to Australian Alex de Minaur. De Minaur will make his first semi-final appearance at the Masters 1000 level against unseeded Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who beat Mackenzie McDonald 6-4, 6-2.

Medvedev had won his last seven matches in Toronto, including a title run in 2021. But the 27-year-old was unable to get past the efficient game of number 18 De Minaur, who had lost four of five previous meetings with Medvedev.

"I had to play my best tennis," De Minaur, runner-up at Los Cabos last weekend, said. "It's always a complete chess match between us, we're both adaptable and can play many styles of tennis.

"He brings out the best in me, The way I played today was the best style of tennis that I could produce."

De Minaur needed more than an hour per set to prevail against the world number three.

The Aussie saved three set points in the opener and claimed the victory on his own second opportunity as Medvedev double-faulted.

Medvedev repeated his complaint about the slow speed of the balls on the tour this season, but said his own game could have been sharper.

"It was not a bad match but I definitely could have done better to win the first set," he said. "I mean, up 5-1 on the tiebreak, and then 6-4, 5-3 serving for it - I could have done better."

Davidovich Fokina advanced in 97 minutes on his third match point against Mackenzie, who beat an injury hobbled Rafael Nadal in the second round of the Australian Open in January.

The 37th-ranked Spaniard, who reached the final Monte Carlo last year, continued a strong week that saw him topple world number three Casper Ruud on Thursday.

World number one Carlos Alcaraz knocked out of Toronto Masters; Daniil Medvedev also shown door

World number one Carlos Alcaraz produced a thrilling comeback to beat Hubert Hurkacz 3-6 7-6(2) 7-6(3) on Thursday and reach the quarter-finals of the Canadian Open as the Wimbledon champion continues to refine his game ahead of the upcoming U.S. Open. The swashbuckling Spaniard got off to a nightmare start as Hurkacz jumped out to a 3-0 first set lead in just six minutes en route to capturing the first set.

Trouble mounted further for Alcaraz when he was broken at the start the second but he broke back for 1-1 and from there began to pick up the pace on his forehand while the Pole's serving cooled off.

Alcaraz dominated the second set tiebreak and appeared in complete control when he whipped a sensational crosscourt forehand winner for a 5-2 lead in the decider that brought the Toronto crowd to their feet.

But the natural showman got a little too cute in the next game, attempting back-to-back drop shots on match points that landed in the net and he was ultimately broken.

Hurkacz began to find his form again, breaking at love for 5-5 and holding to take a 6-5 advantage.

But there would be no escape from Alcaraz in the third set breaker where Hurkacz tightened up and committed some costly errors including a forehand that sailed long to deliver Alcaraz his 14th straight win.

Up next for Alcaraz is a quarter-final with one of two Americans - Tommy Paul or Marcos Giron.

Soon after the conclusion of the match, Scot Andy Murray announced that he had to pull out of his round of 16 match against Italy's Jannik Sinner with an abdominal injury.

Earlier, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina battled back from a third set deficit to beat Casper Ruud 7-6(4) 4-6 7-6(4) and deny the third seed a place in the Canadian Open quarter-finals.

Ruud was two points away from victory at 5-3 30-0 before Davidovich Fokina served his way out of trouble.

Still leading 5-4, the Norwegian had a chance to seal the match but was unable to do so, badly shanking a shot on break point to give new life to his opponent.

Both players held serve to send the contest to a tiebreak as the match crossed the three-hour mark.

Ruud dug himself into an early hole in the breaker with some tentative serving and poor forehands and Davidovich Fokina claimed the win with a drop shot.

"When I broke at 5-4, that gave me like a shot of tequila," the Spaniard said.

Up next for Davidovich Fokina is American Mackenzie McDonald, who reached his first quarter-final of a Masters 1000 tournament by dispatching Canadian Milos Raonic 6-3 6-3.

After crushing 52 aces across his first two matches, hometown hero Raonic's biggest weapon proved his undoing.

He managed just nine aces to go with six double faults, some coming at the worst possible times including on set point in the opener and a break point in the second that put McDonald up 2-0.

Despite the loss, Raonic, a former world number three who returned to the tour in June after a two-year absence due to injury, said the tournament was a positive experience.

"A lot of things to look back and be proud of. Happy with how the week went overall" he said. "I wish I could have been better on court today but you can't discredit what two years away does, right?"

Canadian Open 2023: Carlos Alcaraz comes from behind to beat Hubert Hurkacz, seals quarters berth

Andy Murray said he hopes world number one Carlos Alcaraz can follow his instincts and continue playing&nbsp;tennis&nbsp;with freedom and fearlessness, even if that approach appears a bit 'kamikaze'&nbsp;at times. Murray predicted two years ago that the reigning U.S. Open and Wimbledon champion was destined for success, and this week the former world number one said there was more to the 20-year-old's game than his power and technical ability.

"The thing that I love about watching him is the freedom that he plays with, and part of that is youth, I think. I just hope he doesn't lose that," Murray said on the ATP website during the Canadian Open. "Sometimes it looks a little bit kamikaze, but he just is totally instinctive. And I love that." Three-time Grand Slam champion Murray said he was convinced Alcaraz would have a glittering career after a conversation with the Spaniard's coach Juan Carlos Ferrero when the youngster was still outside the top 50 in the world.

"I asked Ferrero, 'Does he love&nbsp;tennis? Does he work hard?'," Murray said, adding that former world number one Ferrero assured him Alcaraz was "really good with that stuff". "That was enough for me, having seen his game and hearing from his coach and someone who knows what hard work is like that he was going to go on potentially to have a great career."

Tennis: Andy Murray hopes instinctive Carlos Alcaraz does not ditch 'Kamikaze' approach

Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova halted Caroline Wozniacki's comeback in its tracks at the WTA Montreal Open on Wednesday, ousting the former world number one in straight sets.

Wozniacki had returned with a bang from a more than three-year layoff on Tuesday, winning 6-2, 6-2 against 115th ranked Kimberly Birrell.

But the 33-year-old Danish star found Vondrousova a tougher proposition, with the ninth seed claiming a 6-2, 7-5 victory to set up a last 16 clash with Coco Gauff.

Vondrousova looked to be motoring towards a brisk victory after taking a 6-2, 3-0 lead over Wozniacki.

Vondrousova then had a point for a 4-0 lead but doubled faulted twice to let Wozniacki off the hook.

The veteran then rallied brilliantly to take a 4-3 lead and had a break point in the eighth game for a 5-3 lead.

Vondrousova however held for 4-4 and then earned a break for a 6-5 lead before serving to love to seal victory.

Elsewhere on Wednesday, world number one Iga Swiatek entered the competition with an opening 7-6 (8/6), 6-2 win over Karolina Pliskova.

The victory left reigning US Open champion Swiatek needing victory over Karolina Muchova on Thursday to ensure she will hold on to the number one ranking for a 72nd week.

Her clash with the Czech Republic's Muchova on Thursday is a rematch of the duo's three-set battle in the French Open final earlier this year, won by Swiatek.

"It's nice to have some challenges and overcome them," Swiatek after Wednesday's win. "It wasn't an easy first round, but I'm happy that I stayed solid, and I could close it in the first set."&nbsp;

Swiatek, who entered the tournament fresh from a victory in Warsaw last month, is now relishing another duel with Muchova.

"We have to be ready for the next match and kind of expect that anything can happen because tennis can be pretty unpredictable," Swiatek said.&nbsp;

"You know, one player can have a bad day. At the same time the other one can play the best tennis of their life."

In other games on Wednesday, 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina finally closed out victory over Jennifer Brady in a match that had started on Tuesday before being halted.

Rybakina, seeded three, edged past the returning Brady 6-7(3/7), 7-6(7/5), 6-3 and will now face unseeded Sloane Stephens of the United States in the last 16.

Tennis: Caroline Wozniacki comeback halted by Marketa Vondrousova at WTA Montreal Open

Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki made a triumphant comeback in her return to competition after a layoff of more than three years at the WTA Montreal Open on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old Danish star defeated 115th-ranked Australian qualifier Kimberly Birrell 6-2, 6-2 in her comeback match at the hardcourt event, a tune-up for the US Open, which starts on August 28 in New York.

"I'm happy," Wozniacki said. "A little tired. Just it was fun to be out there again playing on center court in front of a big crowd. I'm just thrilled that I could win my first match in 3 1/2 years."

Her second-round opponent&nbsp;will be reigning Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova, the Czech world number 10 who ousted Egypt's 33rd-ranked Mayar Sherif 6-4, 6-2.

Wozniacki, the 2018 Australian Open champion, retired after a third-round loss at the 2020 Australian Open. She gave birth to two children and became a television commentator, her WTA playing days seemingly complete.

But Wozniacki announced in June she was making a comeback and received wildcard entries into Montreal and next week's Cincinnati tournament as stepping-stones to the US Open, where she was runner-up in 2009 and 2014.

Before her retirement, Wozniacki won 30 titles and 635 career matches. She spent 71 weeks atop the rankings.

Now she has her first match victory as a mother, having given birth to son James and daughter Olivia in the 1,293 days since being ousted by Ons Jabeur at Melbourne in 2020.

"That's pretty crazy," she said. "I was just looking at the clock actually. My kids are napping right now which is awesome. So I'm going to catch them after I do a little bit of treatment and food and stuff.

"That's the good part of playing early. I still have the afternoon with them."

Wozniacki dropped the opening game but rallied to capture the final four games of the opening set, the last on a Birrell double fault after 43 minutes.

"I was definitely a little rusty," Wozniacki said.

Wozniacki broke for a 4-2 edge in the second set, held for a 5-2 lead and broke again on a backhand winner to secure the victory after 97 minutes, raising her arms skyward with a smile of delight at her achievement.

<h2>Excited to be back</h2>

"I'm just excited to be back and competing, and I think for me it's so special having my family here," Wozniacki said. "As a 33-year-old that has played on tour for many years, and doing it with my kids that now, especially the older one is starting to really understand and gets to really experience the world and different countries, I think it's so cool."

Lifting her comeback from practice courts to matches was a major step for Wozniacki.

"I didn't really know what to expect," Wozniacki said. "You have all these things in your head that this is how you're supposed to be playing and you're supposed to be doing this and that, but to be honest, I had no idea what I was going to come up with when I was out on court because I just haven't played a real match in so long.

"It was all about not getting down on myself if I made a mistake and not get too excited when I hit a good shot. So it was just kind of evening out those emotions. I think everything taken into consideration, I'm very happy with how I played today and how I got through."

Tennis: Caroline Wozniacki makes triumphant return with win in first round of WTA Montreal Open

American Taylor Fritz won an entertaining three-hour battle against Andy Murray 6-7(2) 6-3 6-4 in their rain-delayed match on Friday in Washington, D.C., and will face Jordan Thompson in the quarter-finals in the evening session.

The veteran Scot overcame an early break of serve in the marathon first set to force a tiebreak that was dominated by the three-time major champion.

The American top seed broke again early in the second set, which was enough to seal the set and stretch the contest into a decider.

In the tight third set, Fritz took advantage of a sloppy service game from Murray to arrive on the doorstep of victory at 5-4. But Murray was not done and threatened to level when he jumped ahead 0-40 in the next game.

Fritz, who crushed 17 aces, managed to serve his way out of trouble and hit a lovely lunging volley to set up match point, which he converted with a cross-court forehand winner.

The match showcased not only both players' raw power but also their versatility, with each deploying deft drop shots at critical times, often leading to entertaining rallies on a hot and humid day.

Play was halted at one point by climate change protesters who threw large tennis balls with flames printed on them onto the court and unfurled banners calling on tournament sponsors Mubadala and Citi to stop funding the fossil fuel industry.

The winner of the Fritz-Thompson match will face Tallon Griekspoor for the place in the final after the Dutch player overwhelmed American J.J. Wolf 7-5 6-4.

<h2>Tiafoe advances</h2>

Hometown hero Frances Tiafoe, who grew up in the D.C. metropolitan area, beat 18-year-old qualifier Shang Juncheng 6-2 6-3.

Tiafoe rifled a forehand passing shot on match point and raised his arms to pump up the adoring crowd after notching the win.

The second-seeded Tiafoe will face Dan Evans in a quarter-final later on Friday after the Briton beat Russia's Alexander Shevchenko 6-4 6-3.

The winner will take on Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, who reached the semi-finals without hitting a ball after he was handed a walkover by Frenchman Ugo Humbert.

Citi Open: Taylor Fritz edges Andy Murray to seal quarters berth in Washington

Ukraine's Elina Svitolina has barely missed a beat following her return from maternity break with a fearless approach amid the war in her country, world number four Jessica&nbsp;Pegula&nbsp;said ahead of their Washington Open quarter-final clash on Friday. Svitolina returned at the Charleston Open in April following the birth of her daughter with fellow tennis player Gael Monfils and has produced stunning results despite the turmoil caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Pegula, from the United States, has beaten former world number three Svitolina twice in three previous meetings. But she expects a tough challenge against the fierce 28-year-old who made the Wimbledon semi-finals last month having reached the French Open quarter-finals in June. "It's going be a different match probably than the previous times I've played her,"&nbsp;Pegula&nbsp;told reporters. "I can tell from watching her matches, I feel she has a new perspective. So many things going on in her life."

Pegula&nbsp;received a bye in the Washington first round and beat Peyton Stearns 6-3 6-4 on Thursday, while Svitolina has taken out fifth seed Daria Kasatkina and former Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka. "She's come back and reset nicely. She's been competing really well and playing very fearless,"&nbsp;Pegula&nbsp;added. "We'll see. It's going to be a tough match. She's been playing at a high level and I feel like she hasn't really missed a beat coming back."

Ukraine's Elina Svitolina has barely missed a beat following her return from maternity break with a fearless approach amid the war in her country, world number four Jessica Pegula said ahead of their Washington Open quarter-final clash on Friday. "It's going be a different match probably than the previous times I've played her," Pegula told reporters. "I can tell from watching her matches, I feel she has a new perspective. So many things going on in her life." "She's come back and reset nicely. She's been competing really well and playing very fearless," Pegula added. "We'll see. It's going to be a tough match. She's been playing at a high level and I feel like she hasn't really missed a beat coming back." Pegula, who has won titles in doubles alongside fellow American Coco Gauff this year, is chasing her third singles crown and first of 2023 following last season's triumph in Guadalajara. Tennis: ATP Roundup - American star Frances Tiafoe marches ahead in Washington

Czech police stopped a Russian tennis player from entering the country ahead of the WTA Prague Open tournament, organisers said on Friday, as a new government resolution banning athletes from Russia or Belarus caused the event to scratch other competitors.

The Prague Open starts on Monday and was expected to see a handful of Russian and Belarusian players, including Evgeniya Rodina of Russia or Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus, competing as neutrals, without any national flag or symbol. But the government approved a resolution at the end of June banning athletes from Russia and Belarus from competing in events on Czech territory, allowing police to revoke visas to those nationals.

Tournament director Miroslav Maly said police had stopped one Prague Open participant from entering the country on Thursday and organisers informed other Russian and Belarusian nationals not to travel for the tournament after the incident.

"She was the first participant to arrive to the Czech Republic with a Russian passport," Maly said, adding she had already left the country. "The management of the tournament fully respect the current stance of state authorities. We do not expect any player with Russian or Belarusian citizenship to take part in the tournament in this situation."

The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) reacted negatively to the exclusion of the players from their tournament.

"WTA rules state that all players must be allowed to compete on the WTA based solely on merit, without discrimination," it said on messaging platform X, previously known as Twitter. "We will continue to review the situation as we factor important considerations around these complex geopolitical issues."

Czech world number 29 Marie Bouzkova, who lost to compatriot and eventual champion Marketa Vondrousova at this month's Wimbledon, won the Prague Open in 2022 and will defend her title. The tournament will also feature China's Zhu Lin and Zhang Shuai and France's Alize Cornet among the top seeds.

Czech police had planned to make sure the government resolution was upheld for the tournament, a police spokesperson told CTK news agency on Thursday.

A week ago, Polish authorities also denied entry to Russian tennis player Vera Zvonareva, a 2008 Olympic bronze medallist, for reasons of state security and public safety.

Central and eastern Europe states have been some of Ukraine's staunchest allies since Russia invaded the country in February 2022.

Since June 2022, the Czech government has stopped issuing long-term visa to Russian citizens, who can gain entry only through short-term visas if they have relatives with European Union citizenship or are seeking entry on humanitarian grounds.

His withdrawal deprives the US Open tune-up tournament that starts on August 7 of a four-time champion.

"I have always enjoyed my time in Canada, but after speaking with my team, we believe this is the right decision to take," Djokovic said in a statement released by Tennis Canada.

"I would like to thank Karl Hale, the Tournament Director, for understanding this decision. I really hope I can return to Canada and Toronto in the coming years to play in front of great fans there."

Alcaraz denied Djokovic a record-equalling eighth Wimbledon title last week, handing him his first defeat on the All England Club's Centre Court in 10 years.

The Spaniard's victory also ended 36-year-old Djokovic's chance of a calendar Grand Slam after his triumphs at the Australian Open and French Open took his tally of major titles to a men's record 23.

Wimbledon quarter-finalist Christopher Eubanks will now gain automatic entry into the Toronto main draw.

The American defeated fifth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas and 12th-seeded Cameron Norrie en route to the last eight at Wimbledon.

Hale acknowledged that Djokovic, who won the Canadian title in 2007, 2011, 2012 and 2016, would be missed.

"Of course, we're disappointed that Novak won't be playing at the National Bank Open this year," Hale said in a statement. "He's an incredible player and one we know our fans were eager to watch at Sobeys Stadium.

"He will be missed but we still have a long list of sensational players confirmed for this year’s event, including 41 of the top 42 players in the world."

Tennis: India's Sumit Nagal wins Tampere Open, beats Dalibor Svrcina to lift fourth career Challenger trophy

Little known Hungarian player Amarissa Toth has apologised for erasing a ball mark during her Hungarian Grand Prix match against Zhang Shuai, with the disputed line call leading to the Chinese world number 28 to retire from the contest in tears.

On Tuesday, second seed Zhang hit a crosscourt forehand that appeared to land on the line but was called out by the line judge. The chair umpire then stepped down to take a look at the mark and confirmed the ball had landed outside the line.

Zhang was incensed by the call and asked to speak with the tournament supervisor. The match continued for one more point but the disagreement over the disputed call continued, before Toth walked up to the mark and used her shoes to erase it.

Zhang looked visibly distressed during the changeover and a physio was called to check on her before she opted to retire while trailing 6-5 in the opening set of their round of 32 match in Budapest. The home crowd jeered Zhang during the incident, while Toth shook hands with her before putting her arms up in celebration.

Toth's behaviour was swiftly condemned by fellow players and greats such as Martina Navratilova on social media, with Zhang taking to Instagram to complain about the call and thanked those who supported her.

"I did not think that my first ever WTA main draw success of my career would cause such a storm," Toth said in a statement uploaded to the tournament's Facebook page after her defeat to Ukraine's Kateryna Baindl on Thursday. "I am extremely sorry for what happened, I respect Zhang Shuai as a player and as a person. It was never my intention to disrespect, hurt or upset anybody, let alone Zhang Shuai.

"I do realise I shouldn’t have celebrated the way I celebrated after the match and I’m sorry for that. I was acting in the heat of the match and got caught up by my emotions and the moment. I focused on&nbsp;tennis, I didn’t want to win like that."

Toth, who initially defended her decision to erase the mark, added that she was hoping to speak with Zhang in the future to express her regret. The Hungarian's opponent Baindl also addressed the issue after their match, saying in her on court interview: "I hope they can stay fair and Zhang Shuai feels better and hopefully she is getting better and we will soon see her back.

"She is an unbelievable player, very respectful and a great person. There is a lot to learn from her. We should all stay respectful to each other, doesn't matter what."

We love patterns, don't we? An orderly arrangement of past tempts the dreamiest among us. It gives a certain structure to everyday chaos and helps us make sense of the world, whether real or imaginary.&nbsp;

In the world of sports, where results are largely binary (victory or defeat), such an arrangement of affairs is quite alluring. And in the world of tennis, the romanticism appears far more pronounced.

The simple game of tossing the ball above a net has millions of die-hard fans across the globe. And it has a rich history dating back to 1800s so there's much fodder for both appreciation and analysis.

Generations of tennis fans have had their heroes. The elderly swear by Bjon Borg, Stafan Edberg, and Martina Navratilova. A bit younger ones chant Pete Sampras, Angre Agassi, Matina Hingis and others. Millennials mostly fawn around Roger Federer, Raphael Nadel, Novac Djokovic and more.

But now, Gen Z and the crazy world of tennis fans of all ages may have found their new hero.&nbsp;

Carlos Alcaraz Garcia is not even in his mid-twenties. He is already world number 1, the youngest to ascend that throne at 20. And he is making major waves. His victory at Wimbledon just a few days ago saw him overpower the formidable Djokovic, a gritty 36-year-old champion, who is showing no sign of slowing down.

<img alt="Djokovic" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="5acac9f5-af2d-453a-a5f0-71437e42980b" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/000_33P88NU.jpg" />

(Image: AFP)

The final was definitely not easy for Alcaraz. He lost the first set but clawed back later. The back-and-forth between the two ace players did result in Alcaraz prevailing. And it was a well-deserved victory.

Djokovic, for all his mastery and swift presence on court, appeared baffled, more than once, by Alcaraz's drop shots. Among the highlights of Alcaraz's&nbsp;gameplay in the Wimbledon finals this year was his&nbsp;ability to change the shot at the very last moment. Djokovic did not have an answer to this.

<img alt="Djokovic" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="7fbaab17-bcc6-4060-a948-7132c8b76bb3" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/000_33P97Y2.jpg" />

(Image: AFP)

A tennis match may appear to us laymen to be all about&nbsp; tossing around of a ball. But for pro-players, it is also a mental game that requires careful study of the opponent, right during the match.

Before a player attempts a shot, there are some indications in his body language that give the opponent a hint about where the ball would land in his own court.&nbsp;

This is why we often see players make predictive movements to place themselves in the right positions even before their opponent has hit the ball.

In his arsenal, Alcaraz appeared to have a trick. He appeared to position himself as if to give a 'false signal' about his next shot, and then quickly attempt a different one altogether. This last millisecond change requires&nbsp; skill and physical fitness of another level.

<img alt="Alcaraz" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="bc3375cb-c1e3-42dc-86ab-b0e4fd929195" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/000_33P96AL.jpg" />

More often than not, during the Wimbledon final this time, Alcaraz was able to 'fool' Djokovic. It was not a testament to Djokovic's lack of skill but to Alcaraz's mastery. Djokovic fell for it several times. The match was not a one-way affair of course but in the end, the young Spaniard trumped the defending champion, Djokovic.&nbsp;

The skill and mastery of Alcaraz and the way he has risen through the rank at the age of just 20, is definitely indicating, at this time, that we are entering a new era in world tennis. With Federer retired, RaFa probably following suit in next few years, there appears&nbsp;to be a vacuum for an absolute champion at the very top. Djokovic has been there for a long while but in spite of his grit, his fitness, we can safely say that he would retire in a few years.

<img alt="Djokovic" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="ad7f5aa1-dd48-44c3-8a6f-49eca6fe6dbf" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/000_33P97WJ.jpg" />

Alcaraz seems primed to fill the power vacuum for an absolute champion who would simply dominate his generation of players. Roger Federer was such a man in his absolute prime. Pete Sampras was such a man in his heydays. Steffi Graf was such a champion when she reigned supreme. And then there was Serena Williams.

It's not a matter of winning just a few championships.&nbsp;It's about absolute domination that is era-defining. Alcaraz seems poised to take up the mantle if he continues the same way.

<img alt="Alcaraz" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="77c944ea-8cd4-443a-801f-1908ae147454" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/000_33P67KG.jpg" />

Of course, there's Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Casper Ruud, Taylor Fritz and more still spinning their magic, but given how things are at the moment, it doesn't quite appear that any of them can become the undisputable, reigning champion that would make all of us take his victory for granted.

The search for the podium isn't finished but. For every Sampras, there was an Agassi. For every Federer, there was a Nadal. Steffi Graf had a formidable challenger in Monica Seles who often upset her designs at winning a grand slam.&nbsp;

There is something about a challenger to the absolute king (or queen) that makes us root for him. The underdog always has a certain appeal. He calls to that urge within all of us that makes us take those impossible shots at a seemingly distant and unachievable bulls-eye. Hope is a potent thing and a challenger is always full of it.

We may be witnessing a time when old pages are being turned for new chapters in the world of tennis. As the old guard gradually takes a step back, Alcaraz seems in a prime position to craft the new era in his name.

Who will challenge him enough to make him challenge himself? That is yet to be decided. The search begins...

Alcaraz era has begun in tennis, search for worthy adversary starts now

China's Zhang Shuai retired from her Hungarian Grand Prix match in tears on Tuesday after her local opponent Amarissa Toth erased a ball mark on the clay court following a disputed line call.

Second seed Zhang hit a crosscourt forehand that appeared to land on the line but was called out by the line judge.

"Wait, wait, wait! Keep the mark," Zhang yelled. "What are you doing? Why would you do that?"

Zhang looked visibly distressed during the changeover and a physio was called to check on her before the world number 28 opted to retire while trailing 6-5 in the opening set of their round of 32 match in Budapest.

The home crowd jeered Zhang's retirement, while Toth shook hands with her before putting her arms up in celebration.

Zhang later took to Instagram to complain about the call and thanked those who supported her. Have a look at the video here below posted by Zhang:

China's Zhang Shuai retired from her Hungarian Grand Prix match in tears on Tuesday after her local opponent Amarissa Toth erased a ball mark on the clay court following a disputed line call. Second seed Zhang hit a crosscourt forehand that appeared to land on the line but was called out by the line judge. "Wait, wait, wait! Keep the mark," Zhang yelled. "What are you doing? Why would you do that?" Zhang looked visibly distressed during the changeover and a physio was called to check on her before the world number 28 opted to retire while trailing 6-5 in the opening set of their round of 32 match in Budapest. The home crowd jeered Zhang's retirement, while Toth shook hands with her before putting her arms up in celebration. Zhang later took to Instagram to complain about the call and thanked those who supported her. Tennis: China's Zhang Shuai retires from Hungarian Grand Prix match after controversial line call

Novak Djokovic lost the Wimbledon 2023 final versus Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set thriller on Sunday (July 16). The Serbian was a favourite to lift the title, which would have been his 24th&nbsp;Grand Slam title and eighth Wimbledon trophy.&nbsp;But the Spaniard was the better player in the summit clash, winning 1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 to lift his second major title and maiden championship at the All England Club on a packed Centre Court.

While Djokovic missed a golden opportunity to extend his Grand Slam tally, he was visibly upset when the going got tough in the marquee finale. Emotions were flying high and Djokovic even lost his cool as he smashed his racquet at the Centre Court net post. Wimbledon has now levied a hefty fine on him for&nbsp;damaging a property with his racquet.&nbsp;

The incident took place during the final set when the game had intensified. After Djokovic was broken early to give his opponent the much-needed confidence to wrap up the contest, the Serbian went back towards his bench and vented out his frustration on the racquet. He smashed it on the&nbsp;Centre Court net-post, leaving a dent mark. As a result, he was immediately given a code violation warning by the chair umpire. Earlier, he had also been&nbsp;warned for time violation.

A day after the summit clash, second-ranked Djokovic was handed a fine of $8,000 (£6,117). It will be cut from his runner-up cheque which accounts for a whopping £1.175 million ($1.53mn).

Despite being pointed out for his racquet smash act, Djokovic refused to apologise during the post-match press conference.&nbsp;At the presser, the 36-year-old said: "There's not much to talk about that. The second one was frustration. I had break points in the second game. Yeah, just tough, tough couple of points. He played amazingly to break my serve, which was enough to win the fifth. The first one was the time violation, so yeah. Not a great moment again, but you just kind of have to accept it."

The Serbian also reflected on his defeat to 20-year-old Alcaraz. He said, "I've won many close matches here down the years, maybe I should have lost a couple of finals that I won so it's even Stevens," said Djokovic. "It's a tough one to swallow when you are so close. I lost to the better player and I have to congratulate him and move on."

The Spaniard brought his A-game in the big finale after going down 1-6 in the first set ruthlessly.

The second set resumed with both players winning each other's serve and delivering some of the most gorgeous-looking forehand and backhand shots. After an energetic half-n-hour, it all boiled down to the tie-breaker - something Djokovic was a master of.&nbsp;

However, lesser he knew what is about to come.&nbsp;

Alcaraz, who didn't look like dropping his shoulders any time during the match, brought it down to 6-6, only for him to produce a magical effort to outclass Novak and beat him in the tie-breaker - which clearly hasn't been done in Wimbledon 2023.

It was the beginning of something special.

Upbeat Alcaraz tired the veteran, and by the time the fifth game of the third set arrived, the world didn't know how to react as it lasted for 26 minutes and involved 13 deuces.

Much to everyone's surprise, Alcaraz came on top and took the 4-1 lead. It was about time before he made light work of Novak's craft and beat him convincingly 6-1 to take a 2-1 lead in the clash of Titans at the Centre Court.

Just when it looked like Alcaraz was on a winning spree in this match, Djokovic returned at the right time and won the fourth set with relative ease.
The match, just like how it meant to be, reached the fifth and final set.&nbsp;

Alcaraz made the most of his young legs and kept himself in the game by covering each inch of the ground in the final set. Some of his forehand shots were outstanding, and so was his grit and hunger to stand tall against perhaps the greatest ever.

His biggest moment was perhaps serving for the Championship as he held his nerves and won his maiden Wimbledon title.

The second set resumed with both players winning each other's serve and delivering some of the most gorgeous-looking forehand and backhand shots. It was the beginning of something special. Upbeat Alcaraz tired the veteran, and by the time the fifth game of the third set arrived, the world didn't know how to react as it lasted for 26 minutes and involved 13 deuces. Carlos Alcaraz stuns Grand Slam leader Novak Djokovic in a five-set thriller to lift maiden Wimbledon title

The men's singles final at Wimbledon is the defining tennis event of the year with all due respect to the other three grand slams. The 2023 final between the top two ranked players lived up to the hype as well as the King has been dethroned with the new king being crowned.

Alcaraz is the new king of Wimbledon

Novak Djokovic likes nothing better than munching on Wimbledon's Centre Court turf on men's final day and after setting up what he billed as the "ultimate showdown" with Carlos Alcaraz, he now wants to gobble up a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title.

"He's very motivated. He's young. He's hungry. I'm hungry, too, so let's have a feast," joked the Serbian who has bent down to eat a handful of grass from the most famous tennis arena after each one of his seven Wimbledon triumphs.

Djokovic has made no secret of his insatiable appetite to hoard more and more records as he looks to leave every rival, especially those whose names crop up in the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) debate, in his shade.

For the first time in his career, Djokovic stands alone on top of the men's Grand Slam totem pole after he won the French Open last month to secure a 23rd major -- moving ahead of his great rival Rafael Nadal on the all-time winners' list. But that achievement has only fuelled the 36-year-old's burning desire.

Considering he honed his skills in a drained swimming pool converted into a makeshift tennis court while NATO was bombing Belgrade in 1999, it is not difficult to understand why winning the biggest prizes in tennis means so much to him.

"Maybe some people think that it would be a huge relief for me winning Roland Garros, being the only men's tennis player with 23 slams. It's not," Djokovic, who turned up for his news-conference wearing a forest green sweatshirt, baseball cap and watch, said ahead of contesting a record 35th major final. "It's no secret that Grand Slams are the highest priority for me, the highest goals on my priority list. Every time I start the season, I want to peak at these four tournaments.

"I feel that the job is not finished until I lift the trophy."

<h2>Men's record</h2>

Djokovic now stands one win away from equalling Roger Federer's men's record of eight Wimbledon titles and if he hoists the pineapple-topped gilded Challenge Cup on Sunday, he will draw level with Margaret Court's haul of 24 majors - an all-time record the Australian has held for 50 years.

Even at the age of 36, there is no sign that Djokovic's aura of invincibility is fading as the Serbian has won six of the last 10 slams.

Even though Alcaraz recently dethroned him from the top of the world rankings, Djokovic is still considered the man to beat and still has the power to turn opponents into nervous wrecks as the 20-year-old Spaniard discovered during their Roland Garros semi-final.

Alcaraz admitted that the stress and tension of facing Djokovic brought on the debilitating cramps that ruined his chances of winning that showdown just five weeks ago.

No doubt he would have learnt a lot of life lessons from that distressing episode, and the way Alcaraz has been playing at Wimbledon means the Serbian will face a player that John McEnroe describes as being "better than Federer, Djokovic and Nadal were at 20. This guy is amazing".

"If I win, it could be amazing for me -- not only win a Wimbledon title but do it against Novak would be super special," said U.S. Open champion Alcaraz. "I always say if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. Novak is one of them. Would be great if I'll do it."

Wimbledon Final - 'I'm hungry too, so let's have a feast': Novak Djokovic ready for Carlos Alcaraz challenge

IN PICS| Last six Wimbledon women's singles champions

Ons Jabeur and Marketa&nbsp;Vondrousova are set to lock horns in the women's singles final at Wimbledon 2023. On Thursday (July 13), Jabeur had a face-off with Aryna Sabalenka&nbsp;and emerged on top 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 whereas the Czech player Vondrousova ended a memorable&nbsp;run of&nbsp;Elina Svitolina with a 6-3 6-3 win. With this, she became the first unseeded ladies’ singles Wimbledon finalist in the Open Era.&nbsp;

<h2>How Jabeur entered the final</h2>

Sabalenka faced Jabeur in the second semi-final, later in the day. The two kicked off the proceedings in stye as the game was competitive from the word go. The Belarusian player took the opening set after it went to the tiebreaker. Tied at 6-6, Sabalenka won 7-6 by winning the tiebreaker 7-5. However, Jabeur brought her A-game from there on.

Tunisia's Jabeur was on the lead from the second set. She was at her best with her serves -- with a win percentage of over 70 in first and second serve. She held her own to win the second and penultimate set 6-4 and remained dominant to seal the game by winning the third and final set 6-3. She had conceded her first set in her quarter-final face-off with&nbsp;third-seeded defending champion Kazakh Elena Rybakina to win&nbsp;6-7(5) 6-4 6-1. Jabeur will be the&nbsp;favourite&nbsp;in&nbsp;the finale.

<h2>Vondrousova ends new mum Svitolina's run

In the first semi-final,&nbsp;Vondrousova was at her very best from the beginning. She dominated from the onset against the new mum Elina Svitolina to grab a 6-3 6-3 victory and reach the Wimbledon final for the first time.

It is to be noted that&nbsp;Vondrousova-Svitolina's clash&nbsp;was the first Wimbledon women's semi-final featuring two unseeded players. Prior to the game, the&nbsp;24-year-old Vondrousova was in awe of her opposition and heaped praise on Svitolina. She&nbsp;described her as "incredible", "amazing", "a fighter" and "a super woman" for making it to the top four&nbsp;just after nine months post giving birth to her daughter Skai.

However, Vondrousova displayed no mercy on the court, winning 6-3, 6-3 in straight sets. She relied on her aces and&nbsp;service points.

She was all praise for the 28-year-old Svitolina after the game. "I cannot believe it. I am very happy that I made the final. Elina is such a fighter and a great person," said the Czech player. Vondrousova added, "I was crazy nervous. I was leading 4-0 in the second set and she fought back."

The Czech player won't have it easy versus Jabeur, who is eyeing her maiden Grand Slam title after ending second thrice (twice in Wimbledon, including last year, once in US Open).

Tennis: Ons Jabeur and Marketa Vondrousova to lock horns in Wimbledon 2023 final

Daniil Medvedev battled back to defeat unseeded Christopher Eubanks in five sets and reach his first Wimbledon semi-final on Wednesday.

The world number three from Russia triumphed 6-4, 1-6, 4-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-1 and will face either top-ranked Carlos Alcaraz or sixth seed Holger Rune for a place in Sunday's final.

Former US Open champion Medvedev hit 52 winners compared to Eubanks' 74 but crucially committed just a meagre 13 unforced errors to his opponent's 55.

Eubanks, who had shocked fifth-ranked Stefanos Tsistipas in the previous round, was attempting to become just the third man to reach the semi-finals on debut.

However, the 27-year-old's challenge fizzled out in the final set of a bruising, big-hitting contest.

"After the first set, I didn't want to go five sets but when I lost the third, I was happy to go five," said Medvedev who fired 28 aces.

"There were moments in the match when I was losing the game so to say and he was playing well.

"I started to sink and make mistakes but after the third set I started to build something. I had more opportunities in the fourth set and after the tiebreak I played amazing."

Medvedev was untroubled in the opening set, carving out the only break in the third game before claiming the opener in which he committed just one unforced error to 11 for Eubanks.

However, the American soon found his range with his one-handed backhand, pocketing a double break in the second set before levelling the quarter-final with his seventh ace.

The world number 43 had his tail up and a break in the opening game of the third set was the platform as he moved towards a two sets to one lead.

A frustrated Medvedev was handed a code violation for lobbing a ball that hit a courtside camera operator in the eighth game.

An unreturned serve gave Eubanks the set.

Serve dominated the fourth set as Eubanks passed 100 aces for the tournament but it was the more composed Medvedev who claimed the tiebreaker when the American buried a backhand volley into the net.

Suddenly the spirit seeped out of Eubanks' all-out attacking game as he slipped to a key double break down in the decider.

Wimbledon 2023: Alcaraz vs Rune tie to create history, first QF in Open Era featuring two U-21 players

Top seed Carlos Alcaraz roared into the Wimbledon quarter-finals with a formidable display of firepower to down big-serving Italian dark horse Matteo Berrettini on Monday.

The Spaniard was beaten to the punch in the opening set but raised his game to claim a comfortable 3-6 6-3 6-3 6-3 win to the delight of the Centre Court crowd.

He will now face a battle of the 20-year-old’s against Denmark’s sixth seed Holger Rune for a place in the semi-finals.

Berrettini was unseeded after an injury-plagued year but is a potent threat on grasscourts having reached the final two years ago when he lost to Novak Djokovic.

He came out firing huge serves and forehands and rocked Alcaraz with a decisive service break to take the opener.

Berrettini could not maintain the intensity though and Alcaraz raised his tempo to seize control early in the second set, running his opponent ragged at times.

He broke serve in the third game of the second set on the way to levelling the match and did the same in the third set with a thumping smash as he picked up speed.

A delay to close the roof midway through the fourth set as the light faded offered Berrettini some respite but Alcaraz quickly completed the win after the resumption.

Alcaraz was stopped by another Italian, Jannik Sinner, at the same stage last year, but having reached the quarter-finals for the first time he already has his eyes on going further.

“I’m hungry for more,” Alcaraz said on Centre Court. “It’s something I really wanted. I came in this year with that goal -- get into the quarter-final, I’m wanting more.

“I want to play the final here and maybe win it.”

<h2>Learning curve&nbsp;</h2>

Any doubts that Alcaraz would struggle to adapt to grass have now been banished for good.

He won the pre-Wimbledon warm-up event at Queen’s Club in what was only his third tournament on grass and his rapid learning curve shows no sign of levelling off.

Against 27-year-old Berrettini, his extraordinary all-round game was demonstrated in emphatic fashion.

The forehand proved more than a match for the Italian’s, his movement was sublime and his serve potent.

One minute he was feathering delicate drop shots to stretch his opponent and the next he was producing volleys the likes of Pete Sampras or Boris Becker would be proud of.

He had the crowd on their feet at regular intervals, one shot in particular having fans rubbing their eyes in disbelief as he chased down an angled Berrettini slice that looked a sure-fire winner and played a shot around the net post.

There were a couple of late hiccups when he sent a volley long on one match point and double faulted on another but he sealed victory as a weary Berrettini hit a forehand wide, the Spaniard raising his fists and roaring in delight.

“I knew that it was going to be really tough. Matteo is a great player, he made the final here on grass,” said Alcaraz.

His clash with Rune, who is a week older, will be the lowest combined age for a Wimbledon men’s quarter-final in the professional era.

It promises fireworks.

“The young guys are reaching their dreams, coming here and playing the quarter-finals together -- it’s great for tennis,” said Alcaraz.

With eight-time champion Roger Federer retired and his great rival Rafa Nadal set to join him next year, few would disagree.

Wimbledon 2023: Tennis-hungry Alcaraz powers past Berrettini into quarter-finals

Defending champion&nbsp;Novak Djokovic has entered the last eight with an impressive win over Poland's&nbsp;Hubert Hurkacz, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (8-6), 5-7, 6-4, on Monday (July 10). With this win, the Serbian continues to march ahead as he chases&nbsp;his 24th Grand Slam title. It is to be noted that the 36-year-old is&nbsp;bidding for a fifth successive Wimbledon title and eighth overall.

The fourth-round match kicked off on Sunday (July 09) at the Centre Court before being suspended for getting too late to continue to play.&nbsp;Thus, the proceedings resumed on Monday with Djokovic leading by two sets, who&nbsp;lost the third one before bouncing back in style in the fourth and final set to book a place in the last eight.&nbsp;

Hurkacz had his moments but could not capitalise and paid the price in the end. The Polish star brought Djokovic on the back foot with a plethora of aces in the first two sets. However, his inability to close the opening two sets led to the Serbian's victory. It is to be noted that Djokovic was not at his usual best but he brought all his experience into play to sail past his opposition.

With this win, Djokovic is now joint second with Jimmy Connors in terms of reaching the Wimbledon quarter-finals. Overall, the Serbian has now reached 56 Grand Slam quarter-finals, second&nbsp;only to Switzerland's Roger Federer.&nbsp;

Despite a favourable result, Djokovic was the first to admit that he was not at his best and often challenged by Hurkacz -- courtesy of his aces and points won on service. With a day's rest, the Serb will now gear up to face&nbsp;Russia's seventh seed Andrey Rublev on Tuesday (July 11).

In terms of head-to-head, Djokovic leads Rublev 3-1 with their last meeting coming during the quarter-finals of the 2023 Australian Open. Back then, Djokovic won 6-1, 6-2, 6-4.
