Taiwan's annual military exercise this year is aimed at sending a message to China. WION's Executive Editor Palki Sharma Upadhyay tells you how Taiwan plans to repel any Chinese invasion.

Gravitas: Taiwan's biggest message of intent to China

Two crew members were killed in a helicopter crash Thursday as Taiwan's military held drills across the island -- including one simulating coastal assaults from China.

Thursday's climax of the five-day drill aimed to test how democratic Taiwan's armed forces would repel an invasion from its giant neighbour.

Beijing regards Taiwan as part of its territory and has vowed to one day seize it -- by force if necessary.

Thursday's main simulation saw Taiwan fighter jets, warships and ground troops repelling an enemy attempt to land on a beach in the central city of Taichung in an operation involving some 8,000 service members.

The military said a Bell 0H-58D helicopter crashed as it returned to Hsinchu airbase from one of the exercises, killing the pilot and co-pilot.

Taipei has lived with the threat of invasion by China since the two sides split in 1949 after a civil war.

In recent decades it has found itself increasingly outnumbered and outgunned by China's enormous People's Liberation Army.

Beijing has piled military, economic and diplomatic pressure on Taiwan since President Tsai Ing-wen came to power in 2016 because she refuses to acknowledge its stance that the island is part of "one China".

Tsai won a landslide re-election in January in what was seen as a strong rebuke to China's strong-arm tactics against the island.

"I think it's inevitable that the People's Republic of China will realise the reunification of the motherland," Beijing foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told reporters when asked about Taiwan's drills.

In recent months Chinese warplanes have started buzzing Taiwan with unprecedented frequency, repeatedly breaching its air defence zone and prompting Taipei to scramble its own fighter jets.

New hardware

The military mismatch has been compounded by Western governments being increasingly wary of selling Taiwan advanced weapon systems, fearful of incurring Beijing's wrath.

That has pushed the island to develop its own hardware, including advanced missiles, boats and a new trainer jet.

Some of that hardware, including locally built surface-to-air and hypersonic missiles, was used during this week's drills.

China's increasingly muscular approach towards the island has also sparked renewed international co-operation with Taiwan.

Under US President Donald Trump, Washington has become far more willing to sell big-ticket items, including F-16 fighter jets and other hardware.

Earlier this week, Beijing vowed to impose sanctions on defence company Lockheed Martin in response to the US agreeing to upgrade Taiwan's Patriot missile systems.

France has also angered Beijing by agreeing to upgrade the missile interference systems on frigates Taiwan purchased in the 1990s.

Washington has remained a leading unofficial ally and arms supplier to Taipei despite switching diplomatic recognition to Beijing in 1979.

Two Taiwan helicopter crew members killed in China 'invasion' drill

Taiwan's air, sea and land forces on Thursday fought off simulated coastal assaults from China during their biggest annual live-fire exercises of the year, as Beijing ramps up military pressure on the island.

The five-day drill, which began on Monday, is aimed at testing how democratic Taiwan's armed forces would repel an invasion from its giant neighbour.

Thursday's simulation saw Taiwan's fighter jets, warships and ground troops repelling an enemy attempt to land on a beach in the central city of Taichung in an operation involving some 8,000 service members.

F-16 and domestically made Ching-kuo fighter jets launched strikes and tanks raced across inland scrub, firing shells to destroy targets on the beach. About 8,000 personnel took part in drills, held on a coastal strip near Taichung in central Taiwan.

"The Han Kuang exercises are a major annual event for the armed forces, evaluating the development of combat abilities. Even more, it lets the world see our determination and efforts to defend the country's territory," Tsai told the troops.

Taiwan conducts live-fire drill to thwart 'invasion' amid China tensions

Taiwan is pitching democracy to its investors amid political turmoil in Hong Kong to draw more foreign money and talent.

The country's top financial regulator emphasized the high quality of life and rule of law in the nation to lure more investors and take advantage of the situation.

Taiwan has been in discussion with foreign financial institutions about increasing the investment in the country according to Financial Supervisory Chairman Huang Tien-mu.

This has been ongoing. It's not only aimed at Hong Kong," Huang said in his first interview with foreign media since being appointed to the post in late May.

The commission has been pushing financial reform to attract money and talent from around the region, and to bring Taiwan's financial system in line with international standards, he said.

"Our main aim is not to replace any particular region or city," Huang added, when asked if China's new national security law for Hong Kong was an opportunity for Taiwan to supplant the city as Asia's financial centre.

"We hope to attract not only people or funds from one place. We hope to make Taiwan's market even more competitive, so it becomes a financial market that gets more attention in Asia."

Chinese-claimed and democratic Taiwan has condemned the new law, and anti-government protesters in the former British colony have won widespread and cross-party support on the island.

Taiwan opened an office this month to help people fleeing Hong Kong after China imposed the security law on the city, with a senior minister saying at the time Taiwan hoped to seize the opportunity to attract professionals and capital from the city.

But Huang, 61, said problems include Taiwan's more complex tax system, lower salaries, lack of wide usage of English and financial regulations that may be relatively liberal but are not as free as other parts of the world.

"In the short term, this is perhaps not something we can be like others with," added Huang, who started his career in Taiwan's Finance Ministry and has a doctorate from the University of Southern California.

"But Taiwan has its attractions. Our democratic system, rule of law that is transparent," Huang said, pointing to its freedom of speech, ability to elect its own leaders and even legalising of same-sex marriage.

"I've been to many international meetings, and I feel that everyone likes Taiwan - they feel very relaxed when they come here."

China to impose sanctions on US' Lockheed Martin over arms deal with Taiwan

The United States has approved a possible $620 million upgrade package for Patriot surface-to-air missiles to Taiwan, the State Department said, the latest purchase from the United States to deal with a rising threat from China.

The United States, like most countries, has no official diplomatic ties with Taiwan, but is bound by law to provide the democratic island with the means to defend itself.

China, which claims the democratically-ruled island as its own territory, routinely denounces US arms sales to Taiwan.

Taiwan has requested to buy components to upgrade its Patriot missiles "in order to support an operational life of 30 years", the State Department said on Thursday.

Lockheed Martin will be the main contractor and the total estimated cost will be $620 million, it added.

"This proposed sale serves US national, economic, and security interests by supporting the recipient's continuing efforts to modernise its armed forces and to maintain a credible defensive capability," it said.

"The recipient will use this capability as a deterrent to regional threats and to strengthen homeland defence. The recipient will have no difficulty absorbing this equipment into its armed forces."

Taiwan's Defence Ministry said it expected the sale to take effect within the next month.

"This arms sale is the 7th by the Trump administration to Taiwan so far, fully demonstrating the importance attached to our national defence security, consolidating our security partnership with the United States, and jointly maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the region," the ministry said.

Taiwan has been bolstering its defences in the face of what it sees as increasingly threatening moves by Beijing, such as regular Chinese air force and naval exercises near Taiwan.

US approves $620 million missile upgrade package for Taiwan

The imposition of a sweeping national security law on Hong Kong has sent chills through Taiwan, deepening fears that Beijing will focus next on seizing the democratic self-ruled island.

China and Taiwan split in 1949 after nationalist forces lost a civil war to Mao Zedong's communists, fleeing to the island which Beijing has since vowed to seize one day, by force if necessary.

"The law makes me dislike China even more," 18-year-old student Sylvia Chang told AFP, walking through National Taiwan University in Taipei.

"They had promised 50 years unchanged for Hong Kong but they are getting all the more heavy-handed... I am worried Hong Kong today could be Taiwan tomorrow."

Over the years China has used a mixture of threats and inducements, including a promise Taiwan could have the "One Country, Two Systems" model that governs Hong Kong, supposedly guaranteeing key civil liberties and a degree of autonomy for 50 years after the city's 1997 handover.

Both Taiwan's two largest political parties long ago rejected the offer, and the new security law has incinerated what little remaining faith many Taiwanese may have had in Beijing's outreach.

Some now fear even transiting through Hong Kong, worried that their social media profiles could see them open to prosecution under the legislation.

The law "makes China look so bad, distancing themselves even further from Hong Kongers, not to mention people across the strait in Taiwan", Alexander Huang, a political analyst at Tamkang University in Taipei, told AFP.

'Hong Kong today, Taiwan tomorrow'

Beijing has taken an especially hard line towards Taiwan since the 2016 election of President Tsai Ing-wen of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), ramping up military, economic and diplomatic pressure.

Tsai views Taiwan as a de facto independent nation and not part of "one China".

But the pressure campaign has done little to endear China to Taiwan's 23 million people.

In January, Tsai won a second term with a historic landslide and polls consistently show a growing distrust of China.

A record 67 percent now self-identify as "Taiwanese" instead of either Taiwanese-Chinese or Chinese -- a ten percent increase on the year before -- according to a routine poll conducted by the National Chengchi University.

In 1992, that figure was just 18 percent.

In recent decades Taiwan has morphed from a brutal autocracy into one of Asia's most progressive democracies.

Younger Taiwanese tend to be especially wary of its huge authoritarian neighbour.

Social media is filled with messages of support for Hong Kong's democracy movement. Some back Taiwanese independence, or highlight China's rights abuses in regions such as Tibet and Xinjiang.

Wendy Peng, a 26-year-old magazine editor who said she often shared pro-Hong Kong democracy messages on social media, said she would now avoid visiting the city.

"The national security law makes me wonder how far would China go. Right now I don't see a bottom line and there's probably none. I think it's possible they will target Taiwan next," she said.

Universal jurisdiction

Peng's fears are not unfounded.

As well as allowing China's security apparatus to set up shop openly in Hong Kong for the first time, Beijing's security law claims universal jurisdiction.

Article 38 says security crimes can be committed anywhere in the world by people of any nationality.

Hong Kong police have made clear that support for Hong Kong, Taiwan, Tibet or Xinjiang independence is now illegal.

University employee Patrick Wu, 31, said he would now avoid even transiting through Hong Kong.

"It's like a blanket law, whatever China wants to define and interpret," he told AFP. "I don't know if the 'Likes' or messages I have left on social media will be prosecutable."

Last week Chen Ming-tong, the minister for Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, accused Beijing of aiming to become a supremely powerful "heavenly empire" by ordering "subjects all over the world" to obey its law.

Lin Fei-fan, deputy secretary-general of the ruling DPP, warned that "regular Taiwanese people" might now face arrest in "manufactured cases" if they went to Hong Kong.

He cited China's jailing of Taiwanese NGO worker Lee Ming-che under the mainland's own subversion laws.

Lee was arrested in 2017 during a trip to the mainland and held incommunicado for months before his eventual fate was made public.

Sung Chen-en, a political commentator and columnist in Taipei, said Beijing's new security law "creates a great uncertainty about what can be said" far beyond Hong Kong's borders.

"If everyone is watching his own expression of opinions, it creates a chilling effect on democracy," he told AFP.

"If everybody is exercising constraint, there is no freedom at all."

"They had promised 50 years unchanged for Hong Kong but they are getting all the more heavy-handed... I am worried Hong Kong today could be Taiwan tomorrow." Over the years China has used a mixture of threats and inducements, including a promise Taiwan could have the "One Country, Two Systems" model that governs Hong Kong, supposedly guaranteeing key civil liberties and a degree of autonomy for 50 years after the city's 1997 handover. 'Hong Kong today, Taiwan tomorrow' Beijing has taken an especially hard line towards Taiwan since the 2016 election of President Tsai Ing-wen of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), ramping up military, economic and diplomatic pressure. Universal jurisdiction Peng's fears are not unfounded. "I don't know if the 'Likes' or messages I have left on social media will be prosecutable." Last week Chen Ming-tong, the minister for Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, accused Beijing of aiming to become a supremely powerful "heavenly empire" by ordering "subjects all over the world" to obey its law.

You may not be able to take an exotic holiday anytime soon. But, the travel-starved Taiwanese have an option. An airport in Taipei has come up with an idea - a make-believe flying experience.

Gravitas: Missing travelling? Taiwan is offering 'Fake Flights'

Starved of the travel experience during the coronavirus lockdown? One airport in Taiwan has the solution - a fake itinerary where you check in, go through passport control and security and even board the aircraft. You just never leave.

Check in but go nowhere: Taiwan offers fake flights for travel-starved tourists

Craving the travel experience during the coronavirus lockdown? One Taiwanese airport has the solution -- a fake itinerary where you check in, go through passport control and security and even board the aircraft. You just never leave.

Taipei's downtown Songshan airport on Thursday began offering travellers the chance to do just that, with some 60 people eager to get going, albeit to nowhere.

Around 7,000 people applied to take part, the winners chosen by random. More fake flight experiences will take place in coming weeks.

"I really want to leave the country, but because of the epidemic lots of flights can't fly," said Hsiao Chun-wei, 38, who brought her young son.

The passengers got boarding passes, and proceeded through security and immigration before boarding an Airbus A330 of Taiwan's largest carrier, China Airlines, where flight attendants chatted to them.

"I hope the epidemic ends soon so we can really fly away," said a 48-year-old woman who gave her family name as Tsai.

"I haven't been abroad for so long. Earlier, I would go abroad two to three times a year, every year. It's such a pity that this year because of the coronavirus epidemic I haven't been able to go abroad at all," another fake passenger said.

The airport is using the event to show off renovations completed while passengers have stayed away, and show people what coronavirus-prevention steps they are taking.

Songshan usually has flights to Tokyo, Seoul and several Chinese cities, and is also an important domestic hub.

Taiwan has emerged relatively unscathed from the pandemic thanks to early and effective prevention steps, but has largely closed its borders since mid-March. It has advised citizens against overseas travel unless absolutely necessary.

Taiwan opened an office on July 1 to help people fleeing Hong Kong after China imposed new national security laws in the city, with a senior minister saying Taiwan hoped to seize the opportunity to attract professionals and capital from the city. Watch report.

WION Dispatch: President Tsai pledges support for Hong Kong, Taiwan opens new office to help HK

Taiwan on Tuesday warned its citizens of risk in visiting Hong Kong after China's parliament passed national security legislation for the city while Taiwan's president said she was disappointed about the law.

The security legislation imposed on Hong Kong sets the stage for the most radical changes to the former British colony's way of life since it returned to Chinese rule 23 years ago.

The new law would "severely impact" freedom, democracy and human rights in Hong Kong, Taiwan's cabinet said in a statement, adding that the democratic island would continue to offer help to Hong Kong people.

"The move severely impacts Hong Kong society's freedom, human rights and stability. The government strongly condemns it and reiterates its support for the people of Hong Kong as they strive for democracy and freedom," cabinet spokesman Evian Ting said.

Authorities in Beijing and Hong Kong have repeatedly said the legislation is aimed at a few "troublemakers" in Hong Kong and will not affect rights and freedoms, nor investor interests.

Nevertheless, Ting warned Taiwanese of "possible risks" when visiting Hong Kong in light of the legislation. He did not elaborate.

Months of anti-government, pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong last year won widespread sympathy in democratic and Chinese-claimed Taiwan, which has welcomed people from Hong Kong who have moved to the island and expects more to come.

President Tsai Ing-wen, who in May became the first government leader anywhere to pledge measures to help Hong Kong people who leave due to what they see as tightening Chinese controls, said she was "very disappointed" by China's imposition of the law.

"We hope Hong Kong people continue to adhere to the freedom, democracy and human rights that they cherish," she told reporters.

Taiwan is set to launch on Wednesday a dedicated office to help those thinking of fleeing Hong Kong. July 1 is also the anniversary of day the city returned to Chinese rule from Britain in 1997 with the promise of wide-ranging freedoms under a "one country, two systems" formula.

Tsai said the legislation proved that the formula "was not feasible" and that Taiwan would provide "concrete" humanitarian assistance to migrants from Hong Kong.

Beijing denies stifling Hong Kong's freedoms and has condemned Tsai's offer.

Taiwan warns citizens of risk in Hong Kong visits after China passes law

Taiwan and Iceland have won praise for their effective responses to the coronavirus pandemic. They are among a group of countries which adopted a cooperative strategy early on the pandemic, bringing together multiple organisations to tackle the challenges in containing COVID-19.

A cooperative strategy is when organisations try to achieve their goals through cooperation with other organisations. Our own recent synthesis of research explains the attraction of this approach. It can allow public authorities or companies to speed up their response to new challenges by partnering with other organisations which have complementary resources and expertise.

While other countries, including South Korea and Germany, have deployed a cooperative approach, it’s been a key part of both Taiwan and Iceland’s response to the pandemic.

Taiwan’s model

Taiwan’s handling of COVID-19 has been exemplary. As of June 29, Taiwan, with a population of 23.8 million, has recorded only seven deaths linked to the virus, with 447 confirmed cases – 435 of which had fully recovered.

The Taiwanese government acted quickly to control its borders. It activated a Central Epidemic Command Centre (CECC) on January 20 to coordinate cooperation across different government ministries and agencies, and between government and businesses. The CECC also coordinates big data analytics, testing, quarantine and contact tracing.

Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Administration and National Immigration Agency worked together to identify suspected cases for COVID-19 testing, integrating their databases of citizens’ medical and travel history. Since late March, all new arrivals must quarantine for 14 days.

CECC also partnered with police agencies, local officials and telecom companies to enforce quarantine with the support of mobile phone tracking. Local officials would call quarantined citizens to ask about their health and bring them basic daily supplies if required. Along with a 24-hour helpline, Taiwan’s Center for Disease Control collaborated with two tech companies – HTC and LINE) – to create a chatbot which allowed people to report their health status and get advice about the virus.

Taiwan can now test about 5,800 samples a day through a cooperative network of public and private testing centres and certified laboratories.

To avoid the panic buying of face masks, the government rationed their distribution and ramped up production. In February, the government partnered with the Machine Tool & Accessory Builders’ Association and manufacturers, investing in new machinery to produce surgical face masks. In return, manufacturers have to sell the masks back to the government at an agreed price.

This effective government-led cooperative strategy resulted in the establishment of 60 production lines in 25 days, something which would normally have taken several months. More production lines have been added, and Taiwan now can produce about 20 million masks a day.

The public can interact with the government on Taiwan, a virtual democracy platform for open discussion to build consensus on policy solutions. A face mask map app grew out of a suggestion on Taiwan and now provides real-time information on stock availability. The app was developed through collaboration between the Digital Ministry and a group of entrepreneurs and hacktivists.

Iceland’s strategy

Iceland provides another example of a country which used a cooperative strategy to manage the pandemic. As of June 29, Iceland had recorded 10 deaths and 1,838 confirmed COVID-19 infections, of which 1,816 have fully recovered. Its success can be explained by the government’s quick action in activating the National Crisis Coordination Center on January 31 to coordinate the country’s response to COVID-19 through mass testing, quarantine and tracing close contacts of infected citizens.

A public-private partnership between the National University Hospital of Iceland and deCODE Genetics enabled Iceland to carry out aggressive testing from February.

Similar to Taiwan, cooperation and coordination between Iceland’s government ministries and agencies have played a key role in quarantine and contact tracing.

The Directorate of Health worked with the Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management to create a team of 60 contact tracers in February, drawn from police investigators and healthcare workers. In this collaboration, the police contributed their expertise in traditional detective methods and enforced quarantine rules.

These two departments also partnered with a group of companies to create the Rakning C-19 tracing app in consultation with Iceland’s Data Protection Authority.

Public trust

The governments of both Taiwan and Iceland have secured high levels of public trust for their responses to coronavirus. In Taiwan, YouGov polls in May showed that public trust in the government and healthcare professionals on COVID-19 was very high – at over 80%. A combination of transparency and effectiveness may explain polling in April which suggested that 84% of Icelanders were willing to sacrifice some human rights if it helps to prevent the spread of the virus.

The example of these two countries shows how trust can be promoted by speedy government action to activate a crisis management and command centre which is headed by medical experts rather than politicians. Its purpose should be to coordinate cooperation between government and business and to communicate transparently with the public. This fits with a general lesson from cooperative strategies: openness between all parties is crucial and is a foundation for collaborative trust.

Taiwan recently announced plans to ease border restrictions for people coming from Hong Kong on humanitarian grounds. On Wednesday, June 24, the government announced plans to set-up a dedicated office wing for people seeking to escape Hong Kong, a semi-autonomous city sandwiched in China.

Recently, China announced plans to impose national security laws in the former British colony, which would essentially prohibit any criticism of the mainland Chinese administration. Additionally, with the support of pro-China Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam, China wants to weed out “terrorists” from the city.

July 1 - a historic date

It’s imperative to note that Hong Kong is the only territory in China which grants democratic freedoms to its people.

The new office will open beginning July 1. What’s interesting is the historic date chosen for its reopening, for Hong Kong was returned to China on July 1 in 1997, under its “one country, two systems” deal with the British.

Taiwan and China have recently been engaged in a lot of military almost-confrontations. Taiwanese leader recently asked China to “stop the drills”, and to focus on “coronavirus”, which has reemerged in the capital city of China, after China had confidently proclaimed its transmission as over.

A success story

The country had closed off its borders in March in order to contain COVID-19 infections.

“On special humanitarian considerations”, Taiwan will now allow Hong Kongers to come to the country. But there’s one condition - everybody will be tested for COVID-19, and if they test negative they shall be given shelter in the country.

Additionally, everyone will undergo a mandatory 14 day period of quarantine, which is true for everyone entering the country. Taiwan is a democracy, unlike the neighbouring China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory.

Foxconn, the Taiwanese electronics giant is expanding investment in India. The company currently has most of its factories in China. As per a 2010 report, Foxconn has 12 factories in nine Chinese cities.

Speaking at the company's annual general meeting, Foxconn's chairman Liu Young-Way described India as a "bright spot" for development.

“We are fully pushing ahead with next steps there, and maybe in a few months' time we can reveal on our website the next steps and report back to everyone. We'll have further investment there”, he said.

Chinese aggression in Taiwan

Currently, China is ramping up military activity around Taiwan. Taiwan's Premier Su Tseng-chang issued a warning to China today. He told Beijing “focus on fighting the resurgent coronavirus in Beijing, rather than disturbing Taiwan with military drills.”

The People’s Liberation Army has been conducting drills near Taiwan. Taiwan claims that China's Air Force has buzzed Taiwan at least eight times in the last two weeks. Reports say that China sent fighters and bombers into Taiwan's air defence identification zone. The planes were pushed back by patrolling Taiwanese jets.

Amid the growing military threat, Taiwan is prioritising the development of its defence industry. Just yesterday, President Tsai Ing-wen oversaw the first public test flight of an aircraft “Brave Eagle”, wholly built in Taiwan. An advanced jet trainer, it was built at a cost of a little more than two billion Dollars.

Taiwan is also developing submarines and has asked its military to remain vigilant. However, Taiwan still depends on the United States for support.

Fox News reported today that there are now three American aircraft carriers operating in the Pacific to counter Chinese aggression near Taiwan and in the south China sea.

Support to Hong Kongers

Recently, Taiwan extended support to protesters in Hong Kong. Last week, President Tsai declared that Taiwan will provide humanitarian assistance to Hong Kong.

“Our thoughts today are with the people of hong kong. Taiwan has joined the international community in urging the Beijing authorities to honour their obligation to respect hong kong's fundamental freedoms. We do not believe in merely looking on as others defend their freedom. As the situation in hong kong continues to deteriorate just weeks before the 23rd anniversary of the handover, Taiwan will continue to provide necessary humanitarian assistance to the people of Hong Kong”, Tsai ing-Wen said.

Amid growing tensions with China, Taiwan's Foxconn eyes investment in India

The morale of the world community is now at a very low level due to the COVID-19 crisis, with no one knowing when it would end, and the consequent shattered economy of most countries in the world. The Chinese government under the dictatorship of Xi Jinping appears to have decided that present is the best time for the Chinese government to achieve its long-cherished ambition of dominating the world in all respects and emerging as the undisputed superpower of the world.

It is very obvious that the Chinese government has concluded, after all, its calculation or miscalculation, that its strategies towards total domination of the world should start now by confronting and weakening India and even humiliating it, if possible. A large populated country like India, if it were to decisively weaken under the pressure of China, then probably the Chinese government thinks that there would not be many insurmountable hurdles to “conquer the world”.

While the 1962 war with China left India humiliated and it is yet to recover from the shock of Chinese deceit, the Chinese government has consistently applied pressure on India in various ways in multiple forums.

With this game plan of weakening India, the Chinese government has directly and indirectly encouraged Pakistan to maintain hate relationship with India and prejudiced leadership of Pakistan has just considered China not wisely as 'all-weather friend'. In this process, today Pakistan has virtually become an extended territory of China and Pakistan government is in no position to refuse any dictates from China. With huge debts and several infrastructure projects under the Chinese companies, China can any time make Pakistan open a bigger military front against India than what it has been doing so far.

The appeasement of China by India started when Jawaharlal Nehru misread the motives and game plan of the then Chinese government. The recent visit of Xi Jinping to India when Prime Minister Modi went out of the way to extend a glamorous welcome to the Chinese President, made many think whether Modi also has misread the game plan of the Chinese government, just as Jawaharlal Nehru did several decades back.

When China occupied Tibet after the massacre of thousands of Tibetan protestors and India simply recognised the Chinese occupation of Tibet, in spite of the fact that Tibet under Chinese control could be a threat for India’s security interests, the world virtually lost faith that India has the will power to confront Chinese government.

Now, the tragic news that at least 20 Indian army men lost their lives in the border clash with the Chinese military, has shocked entire India, with people wondering how Modi would handle the situation. Will he try to buy peace with China in spite of the provocation or gather courage and work out plans to resist the Chinese government.

In any case, it is obvious now that India has no option other than resisting China in every possible way and make it realise that India is not a country that China can take for granted.

The terrorist attacks by militants from Pakistan in Kashmir which has been steadily increasing in recent times, the government of Nepal creating border dispute with India and Chinese military creating border tension, clearly indicate that China has worked out its strategic game plan to encircle India.

In all probability, it is likely that Pakistan will intensify its conflict with India in Kashmir and Nepal government would become more belligerent against India and Chinese military provocation in the border will intensify. Just as China killed Indian military personnel on June 15, the Nepal government too shot down an Indian a few days back at its border with India.

The scheme behind the well-coordinated plan of the Chinese government with support from governments of Pakistan and Nepal is to force India to resist the incursions on the border with China, Nepal and Pakistan using its military force. This will give an opportunity for the Chinese government to send its force to Pakistan and Nepal to “defend their border”. Then, the Chinese military will not go back at all from these territories of Pakistan and Nepal.

The news that China has asked Nepalese government to teach its students Chinese language Mandarin and has promised to meet the expenses for teaching the Mandarin language clearly indicates that China has a deep interest in controlling Nepal and possibly even occupying Nepal in one form or the other. It is disturbing to think whether Nepal too would go the Tibet way.

What options for Indian government now?

India has to stop import from China. This will be a matter of concern to China and effectively reveal the present Indian government’s mindset to the Chinese government. Certainly, India would suffer a little by suddenly curbing imports from China but this will be a very small price that India can afford.

India has to develop a relationship with Taiwan in a more open way and strengthen trade relations with Taiwan. China should be given the impression that India would not hesitate to give recognition to Taiwan, if necessary.

India must seek cooperation from countries like the US, Japan, Australia, Vietnam, Israel and others, which are equally concerned about Chinese greed and territorial ambitions.

It appears that military confrontation with China and its allies Pakistan and Nepal is possible in the coming days, in a small or big way. Possibly, India needs to have an understanding with the US to face the situation, in the event of attacks from these three neighbouring countries.

Above all, Prime Minister Modi has to clearly realise that China has to be paid in the same coin and the appeasement policy has lost its value once for all.

India must stand-up to China

Taiwan said a Chinese fighter jet briefly entered its air defence zone on Tuesday, the third incursion in a week, prompting the island to scramble its own aircraft in response.

Beijing views democratic self-ruled Taiwan as its own territory and has vowed to one day seize it, by force if necessary.

Taiwan's air force said its planes broadcast warnings and "took active intercept responses" as China's J-10 fighter briefly flew into the island's southwestern air defence identification zone (ADIZ).

The latest incursion came a week after multiple Chinese Su-30 jets entered Taiwan's ADIZ last Tuesday, hours after a US military transport plane flew over the island in a move that China called an "illegal act" and "serious provocation".

Beijing has ramped up fighter flights and military exercises near Taiwan since the 2016 election of President Tsai Ing-wen, who refuses to acknowledge that the island is part of "one China".

It has also sought to diplomatically and economically isolate the island.

Tsai was elected for a second term in January with a record landslide in a vivid rebuke of Beijing's hardline stance.

In February, she criticised Beijing for a "meaningless and unnecessary" move when a fighter jet crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait separating the two sides.

As people flocked to the streets in Taiwan to show support to the 'Black lives matter' campaign that recently came to spotlight in the US, hundreds of indigenous Taiwanese joined the protest to demand justice.

The 'Black lives matter' protests are to demand justice against the racism that minority groups in the US face. The presence of the indigenous Taiwanese in the protest marked the injustice faced by the island's original inhabitants.

Indigenous Taiwanese demand justice in local Black Lives Matter protest

A force to reckon with or a paper dragon? A question aimed at understanding the so-called might of the People's Liberation Army (PLA). Tonight, this army is retreating from the border in Ladakh.

A force to reckon with or a paper dragon? A question aimed at understanding the so-called might of the People's Liberation Army (PLA). Tonight, this army is retreating from the border in Ladakh. And the question becomes all the more significant. Does the PLA live up to the eulogizing reports by the Chinese state media? Is their ground enough for the hyperbole and hubris around its capabilities? It is the largest military force in the world. It has the second-largest defence budget in the world and it's under the absolute control of the Chinese communist party. The People's Liberation Army has grown more assertive during this pandemic. It is militarizing disputed islands in the South China sea, it is intensifying pressure on Taiwan and is attempting to grab territories at the India-China border. But lost in the hyperbole of its might and technological prowess is a sense of perspective. The PLA continues to be plagued by enduring weaknesses. The conscription challenge Technically the military service is mandatory for all Chinese citizens. The practice of conscription is held high even in the Chinese constitution. But the conscription cycle comes with its own set of challenges. The PLA is said to rely on approximately 800,000 conscripts that have to serve for a period of two years. Each conscript is trained for 90 days along with 15 days of political indoctrination. Due to this policy, the forces lose 20 to 35 per cent of their combat power for a period of three to four months annually. It recruits heavily but fails to retain professionals. Professionalism of recruits The second big challenge is recruiting and retaining qualified personnel. China's army recruits a higher number of poor youth from rural backgrounds. They join for the perks. The educated city dwellers tend to leave. Experts blame the one-child policy for this. A policy which is said to produce pampered children who cannot withstand military discipline. When in the army, they're dissatisfied the post-service perks are few. This weakens the force by depriving it of high-quality professionals. Civilian oversight The PLA is characterized by extremely weak civilian control. There's an almost total absence of civilian oversight. The only civilian in the military's chain of command is said to be the chairman of China's Central Military Commission President Xi Jinping himself. This leads to rampant corruption and allows the PLA to demand and spend its budget without accountability. There is no discussion or debate over the levels of allocations funding or PLA strategies in the National People's Congress. Operational initiative The CCP doesn't allow decision making at lower levels. It's the same with the PLA. This prevents the front-line commanders from taking initiative. It hinders soldiers from responding quickly to developments. The result is confusion and frustration at lower levels as troops await decisions from above. Insufficient training The videos don't tell the real story, they gloss over the fact that China's soldiers undergo insufficient training in conditions that are not challenging enough. Military exercises are not seen as a chance to identify problems. The aim is to always succeed. This reduces military training into opportunities to impress superiors. A few headlines give a preview to what it is. The military's orienteering team was disqualified for cheating at the military world games held in China last year and in 2015, Chinese troops as part of a UN peacekeeping force in Sudan are said to have fled the battlefield rather than engage in combat. This is the People's Liberation Army, burdened with organizational problems and riddled with inefficiencies. Neither perfect nor invincible.

Reasons why China's People's Liberation Army is not invincible

Chinese fighter jets briefly entered Taiwan's airspace on Tuesday, forcing the island to scramble its fighters, the same day Taipei announced plans for its largest annual live-fire military drill.

The Taiwanese defence ministry said it broadcast warnings and "took active responses to dispel" multiple Chinese Su-30 fighters to the southwest of the island.

According to a survey carried out from April 21 to May 28 in Taiwan, 75.3 per cent people consider themselves "Taiwanese," 20 per cent selected both Taiwan and China and only 4.7 per cent think of themselves as Chinese. The survey clearly indicates the rejuvenation of nationalism in Taiwan post thumping victory of President Tsai in January 20 elections. The Chinese government, since Tsai's re-election as the President, has left no stone unturned to coerce Taiwan to prevent Tsai crossing the red line of declaring independence.

Furthermore, in a statement, People's Republic of China (PRC) omitted the world ‘Peaceful’ while talking about reunification of Taiwan and this gave rise to the media buzz that Beijing seems to be looking at the unification of Taiwan by force. The speculation was also backed by PLA’s military posturing in Taiwan Strait along with some exercises of amphibious operations.

Taiwan's position

President Tsai Ing-wen in her inaugural address, after being sworn-in on May 20, vowed to continue efforts to push for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, adding that the nation would not accept Beijing’s “one country, two systems” framework. This has certainly set the alarm bells ringing in Beijing. Taiwan also outperformed most of the other societies worldwide in containing the coronavirus. Taiwan has earned global goodwill despite Beijing's coercion, as China continues to earn global anger by continued aggression and over adventurism.

Taiwan’s free grants of medical equipment worldwide dented Beijing’s PR campaign of profiteering out of pandemic through its ‘Health Silk Road’. This track record not only spurred renewed calls for Taiwan to be allowed to join last month’s World Health Assembly, but made a mark for future discussions, as a global consensus seems to be emerging for Taiwan’s access to the WHO and other multilateral agencies.

Taiwan has own reasons to demand a national status. Ever since Communist Party of China (CPC) took control over the Peoples Republic of China (PRC) and Republic of China (ROC) government fled to Taiwan in 1949, Taiwanese historians maintain that they represent entire China and lost the mainland to PRC in a civil war, which has not yet been officially declared to be over.

The Convention on Rights and Duties of States signed in Montevideo on 26 December, 1933, is the key document on statehood. According to Article 1 of this Convention a state has “a) A permanent population; b) A defined territory; c) Government; and d) Capacity to enter into relations with the other states.” Taiwan clearly meets these requirements for statehood.

It’s a democratic society, having elected government, own constitution, own defence forces, own currency and strong economy. Taiwan is a member of WTO, Pacific Economic Cooperation Council, Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum as Chinese Taipei, and has been participating in Olympics by the same name so far. Being an economic and technological giant, Taiwan aspires for greater position and role in the international environment. In Taiwan, the DPP government did not seem to be intimidated despite Chinese aircraft carrier moving in Taiwan Strait. In fact, Taiwan daringly rejected China's coercion and stood in support of Hong Kong protestors. It promises continued support to political activists fighting for democracy of self-ruled Hong Kong by considering granting of asylum to them.

Chinese Stakes

Beijing’s anger prompted some CPC supporters to think of using the pandemic situation for reunification outside the peaceful domain. In my opinion, attempting to take Taiwan by force does not make any strategic sense internationally as well as domestically. It has all the negatives and no positive except false bravado, with bright chances of loss of face globally and domestically. Chinese strategist Qiao Liang, a retired PLA Air Force Major General, has warned that the coronavirus pandemic should not be seen as a chance for Beijing to take back Taiwan by force.  Chinese redline of “Taiwan going nuclear/declaring independence” has not been crossed as yet, giving no justification to adopt such an option.

Taiwan with its national spirit, determined armed forces and US backing is unlikely to give a walkover. Chinese amphibious capabilities to capture Taiwan are doubtful, more so if US warships are around. China has enough missile arsenals to destroy Taiwan, but such massive destruction of Han Chinese (95 per cent of Taiwanese population is Han), who have relations, investments and inseparable linkages with their relatives in mainland and vice versa will not go well with a domestic population of the mainland.

China is Taiwan's largest trading partner, which has replaced the US as No 1 destination for Taiwanese export accounting for approximately 40 per cent of total exports, with Taiwan having a trade surplus of approximately $2.27 billion with China. A cross-strait war is, therefore, not in Chinese economic interest.

Getting Taiwanese under its wings will also bring a fresh democratic wave in China, with Hong Kong already on the boil. Taiwanese people do not want to sacrifice their democratic freedom and prosperity, which is the main reason for the success of Tsai.

US involvement

PRC may keep claiming Taiwan to be its domestic issue, but it has much greater external dimensions. Diplomatically the US may claim to follow ‘One China Policy’ but it treats Taiwan no less than an ally. The Taiwan Relation Act,1973, Taiwan Travel Act signed last year, Sale of State of the Art Weaponry and joint exercises justify the statement. US will always like to trade and strategically partner with democratic Taiwan outside Beijing’s influence, and not Taiwan under CCP.

Use of force by the PLA towards Taiwan may not prompt Washington to declare war immediately, but it could join forces with its allies in the region to use their sea and air advantages to cut off Beijing’s maritime lifeline in and outside the South China Sea. Taking Taiwan by force, therefore involves mobilisation of all its combat resources, expecting an escalation from limited war to an all-out war, as the operation amounts to crossing US redline of “No Change in Status Quo of Taiwan”. China has to cater to the repercussions of its strategic miscalculations. Economically Chinese heavy reliance on the US dollar is far from over, and such a war over Taiwan would be a massive economic blow for China, that would see capital flooding out, and companies moving of the country, much sooner than it thought.

Why CPC’s rhetoric of invading Taiwan by force doesn’t make strategic sense for China

The Tiananmen Square massacre is something China wants the world to forget. On June 4, 1989, the Chinese military entered Beijing's Tiananmen Square and crushed a pro-democracy movement. The images shook the world and led to China's isolation.

31 years on, China is at the same crossroads. Isolated and cracking down on pro-democracy protesters. 31 years later, China is still a one-party state. It is still deeply authoritarian. It is still stifling dissent and still muzzling the voices of its citizens.

The entire world is commemorating this day. But not China. The Tiananmen anniversary is being marked by a crackdown in Hong Kong.

For the first time in all these years. Beijing has cancelled an annual candlelight vigil in Hong Kong. Barricades surround Victoria Park, the traditional venue of the vigil. This event was the only one of its size on Chinese soil. It was a tradition to keep the memories of those killed-- alive.

It has now been called off citing a ban on large gatherings. Hong Kong is fighting back nonetheless with smaller gatherings held across the city.

The citizens are paying tributes from wherever they are. They are also fighting back in the Hong Kong legislature. Beijing has managed to get a controversial bill passed. The national anthem bill criminalises disrespect of China's national anthem. It makes the singing of the national anthem compulsory in Hong Kong.

Pro-democracy lawmakers say it will tighten Beijing's grip on their city and that they will never let this bill become a law. 700 kilometres away from Hong Kong. Taiwan too is fighting back.

Tsai Ing-Wen, the Taiwanese president has urged Beijing to acknowledge the Tiananmen crackdown. She said: "Around the world, there are 365 days in a year yet in China one of those days is purposely forgotten each year in Taiwan, there were once days missing from our calendar but we've worked to bring them to light, I hope, one day China can say the same."

Taiwan wants China to confront the legacy of this massacre. So does the world. The US state secretary Mike Pompeo said: "For the first time in 30 years, Hong Kong authorities denied permission to hold the Tiananmen vigil. If there is any doubt about Beijing's intent, it is to deny Hong Konger a voice and a choice, making them the same as mainlanders. So much for two systems."

Also backing Hong Kong's independence is the United Kingdom. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has given his government's biggest message of intent. He says China must not infringe on the political and civic freedoms in Hong Kong.

The European Union too has extended support to Hong Kong. It said: "We trust that the people of Hong Kong and Macau will be free to mark the anniversary appropriately. Freedom is now more important than ever in light of the recent development.''

In Beijing, several Tiananmen mothers paid tributes to the victims at the Wanán cemetery. They have also written an open letter addressed to China's leaders. They want the Chinese regime to explain the events that led to the death of their loved ones.

They say that for 31 years the government has stayed silent without demonstrating the slightest trace of remorse. The letter carries 124 signatures and seeks compensation and accountability for the losses.

31 years have passed and China continues to crush dissent. Then it was Tiananmen Square in Beijing and now it is Hong Kong. The script is the same massive protests, brutal crackdowns, and fears of another state-sponsored slaughter.

31 years after Tiananmen Square massacre, China stifles Hong Kong

In the 1950s, the Chinese used to say, "The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) of today is the China of tomorrow." But after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, it became, "The USSR of yesterday must not become the China of tomorrow."

China viewed the USSR as a 'pole' in a multipolar world. Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, the paramount leader who retired in 1992, used to refer to the USSR as the polar bear.

The Chinese leaders went to great lengths to prevent the Soviet Union from disintegrating.

Since 1989 when China suppressed pro-democracy demonstrations in and around central Beijing's Tiananmen Square, the Communist Party of China (CPC) fears a similar fate. The party knew it had to change in order to survive. However, with this, it did not mean political reform, but more oppression and boosting its economy.

Deng Xiaoping's vision of a 'socialist market economy' became the Communist Party's official policy. In 1992, When Deng Xiaoping went for his second tour of southern China, he pressed for faster economic reforms Paramount leader Deng Xiaoping tours southern China to press for faster economic reforms Voices within the party that opposed market liberalisation were silenced. By October 1992, China was looking at increased foreign trade and investment.

In 1997, when Hong Kong was handed over to China, Beijing played safe and pressed for the policy of 'One Nation With Diversity'. What the party grew to value the most was stability and it was achieved by suppressing political rights and human rights.

After the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989, Deng had reportedly said, "200 lives are a small price to pay for 20 years of stability." Clearly, when Deng Xiaoping said reform, he meant a new brand of socialism.

China has never provided a full accounting of the 1989 violence. The death toll given by officials days later was over 200, most of them soldiers, but rights groups and witnesses say the death toll could have run into the thousands.

Xi Jinping continues to follow Deng's line and he is not ready to compromise on the party's absolute grip on power. In 2017, Xi Jinping said, "China presents a new option for countries who want to speed up their development while preserving their independence." However, he did not tell the world that under its economic figures, China is hiding large-scale suppression and violation of human rights.

Why the collapse of the Soviet Union is China's nightmare?

From Hong Kong to Washington DC and even Taiwan, they are hitting back at China with warnings, threats, and even support to the people of Hong Kong. In less than a week, there have been five retaliatory moves already.

Retaliation number one: the pro-democracy protesters are back on the streets.

Over the weekend, they defied the lockdown and began their campaign against Beijing again. All through this week, the world witnessed the protests. Despite an aggressive crackdown from the Hong Kong police who have arrested at least 360 people, the cops haven't been able to completely stop them.

The anger in Hong Kong is palpable. The pro-democracy protesters have already declared that they will fight back.

The United States too wants to ride on the wave of anger against Beijing. It wants to make the status of Hong Kong an international issue. The Trump administration took two big steps. First, it tried to raise Hong Kong at the Security Council by calling for an emergency meeting only to be blocked by China.

The US said that the issue of Hong Kong is a "matter of global concern". China rejected the request. Beijing said Hong Kong was an internal matter. China's ambassador to the United Nations put out two tweets calling America the troublemaker of the world.

The United States says that the Communist Party is afraid. So, it blocked the virtual meeting. America failed in its bid to raise Hong Kong at the UN.

But, the world did take notice when the United States made the announcement. The Trump administration declared that Hong Kong is no longer autonomous. It wasn't a statement or a comment from a lawmaker. It was US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who notified the US Congress.

The US has maintained a special relationship with Hong Kong. The Americans used to treat Hong Kong as a separate entity which allowed Hong Kong to become a financial centre.

However, it looks like Trump wants to end all special treatment. So far the US has not revoked any special privileges. But, Washington is certainly leaning towards it.

Until now, Hong Kong was protected from any sanctions imposed on China. It was not subjected to the high tariffs slapped by Trump on Chinese goods.

It's not just the US government that wants to retaliate. American lawmakers have strengthened Trump's hand with the US Congress approving a bill calling for sanctions on China allowing the president to punish oppression of the Uighur Muslims in China. The bill calls for sanctions against those who are responsible for the crackdown against Uighurs in China.

The US lawmakers are targeting specific members of the Communist Party. The bill singles out the Communist Party secretary for Xinjiang, Chen Quanguo. It accuses him of "Gross human rights violations."

Chen is also a member of the politburo, a group of 25 people who oversee the party. The bill will now go to the White House where US President Donald Trump is expected to sign it or he can veto it too.

But, considering his government's wide ranging attacks on China no one expects the US president to veto it this time.

The fifth and final retaliation came from Taiwan. It is ready to help the people of Hong Kong. On Wednesday, Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-Wen, who China calls a "separatist" published a Facebook post in which she said that Taiwan's executive branch will come up with a "humanitarian action plan".

It proposes to give the right to Hong Kongers to flee Chinese crackdown and settle in Taiwan. With the Hong Kong bill, the Communist Party wanted to send a message that the coronavirus has not de-railed its agenda but, like these five retaliations show China has dug itself an even bigger hole.

It accuses him of "Gross human rights violations." Chen is also a member of the politburo, a group of 25 people who oversee the party.
