Taiwan tells China to 'back-off' as airspace 'incursions' rise

China has been carrying out drills near Taiwan. Chinese jets crossed the mid-line of the Taiwan Strait several times over the weekend. Multiple military drills were carried out over Friday and Saturday reports claim that China carried out at least 40 sorties.

Taiwan has been ruled separately from China since the end of a civil war in 1949, but Beijing considers the island part of its territory awaiting reunification.

The island is a flashpoint with Washington, which promises military support to the elected government and has sent two envoys to Taipei in as many months.

"China will take appropriate countermeasures, including targeting relevant individuals," said foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin, without elaborating. He warned that the US actions will "further damage the cooperation" between the US and China.

Wang added that any support for Taiwan's independence is a "dead end... doomed to fail".

The CCP'S mouthpice — China daily published a bitter editorial on the issue.

“The United States was trying to use Taiwan to contain China. 'The US administration should not be blinkered in its desperation to contain the peaceful rise of china and indulge in the US addition to its hegemony," it said.

Neither Taiwan nor the US responded to the Chinese provocation militarily. What if India, The United States and Taiwan decide to jointly retaliate to China. Will the PLA be able to sustain the joint forces?

Take a look at the numbers, if you look at active military personnel. China has 2.18 million men.

India, Taiwan and the US, put together have 3 million men. So, China is out-numbered here.

Before sending aircraft to the Taiwan Strait, China should look also at its aircraft strength which is 3210.

If you combine the number of aircraft of India, Taiwan and the US the number becomes 16,131.

Look at the numbers of tanks, China: 3,500 and 11,761 is the number if you combine the Indian, Taiwanese and American tanks. So what exactly is China thinking — in opening up multiple fronts? Why would it engage 3 countries at the same time?

Especially when it includes the world’s most-powerful and 4th-most powerful armies.

How many reports will it take for China to understand that it cannot afford at war least of all, at a time like this.

China can't afford a full blown war at this stage

At least 18 Chinese aircraft crossed the Taiwan Strait on Friday. The PLA is planning to launch combat exercises near Taiwan's coast. Japan & U.S. have extended their support to Tsai Ing-wen.

Taiwan scrambled fighter jets on Friday as 18 Chinese aircraft buzzed the island, including crossing the sensitive mid-line of the Taiwan Strait, in an escalation of tensions as a senior U.S. official held talks in Taipei.

China had earlier announced the start of combat drills near the Taiwan Strait, denouncing what it called collusion between the island, which it claims as part of its territory, and the United States.

U.S. Undersecretary for Economic Affairs Keith Krach arrived in Taipei on Thursday for a three-day visit, the most senior State Department official to come to Taiwan in four decades - which China had said would prompt a "necessary response".

Beijing has watched with growing alarm the ever-closer relationship between Taipei and Washington, and has stepped up military exercises near the island, including two days of large-scale air and sea drills last week.

With a U.S. presidential election looming in November, Sino-U.S. relations are under huge strain from a trade war, U.S. digital security concerns and the coronavirus pandemic.

Taiwan said 18 Chinese aircraft were involved on Friday, a far larger number than it has previously announced for such encounters.

"Sep. 18, two H-6 bombers, eight J-16 fighters, four J-10 fighters and four J-11 fighters crossed the midline of the TaiwanStrait and entered Taiwan`s southwest ADIZ," the defence ministry said in an English-language tweet.

"ROCAF scrambled fighters, and deployed air defence missile system to monitor the activities." The ROCAF, Taiwan`s air force, has scrambled frequently in recent months in response to Chinese intrusions.

The ministry showed a map of the flight paths of Chinese jets crossing the Taiwan Strait mid-line, which normally combat aircraft from both sides avoid passing through.

Taiwan`s Liberty Times newspaper said Taiwan air force jets had scrambled 17 times on Friday morning over four hours, warning China`s air force to stay away.

It also showed a picture of missiles being loaded onto an F-16 fighter at the Hualien air base on Taiwan`s east coast.

At a press conference on Friday morning a Chinese defence ministry spokesman said Beijing was "holding actual combat exercises near the Taiwan Strait" when asked how Beijing would respond to Krach's visit.

"This is a legitimate and necessary action taken to safeguard China's sovereignty and territorial integrity in response to the current situation in the Taiwan Strait," Ren Guoqiang told reporters.

Ren also warned that the Chinese army had "sufficient ability" to counter any external threat or challenge from Taiwan separatists.

Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory, to be absorbed into the Chinese mainland — by force if necessary.

Washington's increased outreach to Taiwan under US President Donald Trump has become yet another flashpoint between China and America, with US cabinet member Alex Azar visiting last month.

Washington said Krach was visiting Taiwan to attend a memorial service for late president Lee Teng-hui. He will also meet with foreign minister Joseph Wu, and is scheduled to join President Tsai Ing-wen for dinner at her official residence Friday.

China has been tightening it's grip over the pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong since the national security law (NSL) came into force. 12 Hong Kong residents, including an activist charged under the city’s National Security Law, have been detained by China’s coastguard while trying to flee to Taiwan.

China provokes Taiwan: Chinese aircraft accused of multiple violations

Multiple Chinese fighter jets entered airspace to Taiwan's southwest on Wednesday, said the island's defence ministry, describing it as a destabilising action which threatened regional peace.

Taiwan, claimed by China as its own territory, has repeatedly complained of Chinese military activities near the island, including regular air force patrols. China says such drills demonstrate its resolve to protect its sovereignty.

China has in the last few weeks mounted numerous exercises up and down its coast and near Taiwan.

Taiwan's Defence Ministry said the Chinese Su-30 and J-10 fighters had entered Taiwan's "response zone" to its southwest on Wednesday morning, adding that multiple aircraft were involved.

"The Defence Ministry solemnly condemns the Chinese Communist's unilateral actions that damage regional peace and stability," it added.

Taiwan's armed forces are able to respond quickly and appropriately to such movements, the military said, calling on people not to be alarmed.

Taiwan's Liberty Times newspaper said Taiwan issued 24 verbal warnings over the radio for the Chinese aircraft to leave.

Taiwan is currently carrying out live fire weapons tests off its southeast and eastern coast.

There was no immediate comment from China.

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen warned last month that the risk of accidental conflict was rising because of tension in the South China Sea and around Taiwan and communication must be maintained to reduce the risk of miscalculation.

Taiwan on Thursday slammed China over large-scale air and naval drills off its southwestern coast which it called a serious provocation and a threat to international air traffic.

It urged Beijing to rein in its armed forces.

China, which claims democratic Taiwan as its own, has stepped up military exercises near the island, in what Taipei views as intimidation to force it to accept Chinese rule.

Yeh Kuo-hui, from Taiwan's defence ministry's operations and planning department, told a hastily-arranged news conference that China's intentions could not be predicted.

The drills took place in Taiwan's air defence identification zone, between mainland Taiwan and the Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands, the ministry said. Taiwan says China sent advanced Su-30 and J-10 fighters to participate.

Taiwan Deputy Defence Minister Chang Che-ping said the drills threatened regional stability and endangered international aviation.

Taiwan's Foreign Ministry said the government had shared "information related to China's threat to key friendly nations", a likely reference to the United States, Taiwan's main arms supplier and most important international backer.

President Milos Zeman sought on Sunday to defuse a row with China over a visit by the head of the Czech Senate to Taiwan, calling the speaker`s trip a "boyish provocation".

Senate speaker Milos Vystrcil grabbed headlines last week when he told Taiwan`s parliament "I am a Taiwanese" in a speech that echoed the late U.S. President John F. Kennedy`s defiance of communism in Berlin in 1963.

Vystrcil`s trip did not have the backing of the Czech government, which sets foreign policy, and angered China, which said the Czech speaker would "pay a heavy price" for visiting the democratic island it sees as its own territory.

This prompted Prague to summon China`s ambassador.

Zeman has sought closer business and political ties with China since taking office in 2013, but his efforts have been hit by failed investment plans and have divided politicians.

Zeman said in an interview on broadcaster Prima on Sunday he would stop inviting Vystrcil to meetings of the state`s top foreign policy officials and said his trip could be damaging for firms but that China`s comments were exaggerated.

"I consider it boyish provocation," Zeman said of the trip.

Prime Minister Andrej Babis said later on the same debate show he would fight to prevent fallout for Czech companies.

The Czech Republic, like most countries, has no formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan although Taiwan is a large investor in the country.

Czech Senate speaker Milos Vystrcil will "pay a heavy price" for making an official trip to Taiwan and China will not sit idly by, the Chinese government`s top diplomat said on Monday, in a warning brushed off by Taiwan`s government.

China: Visit by Milos Vystrcil an open provocation to China

The United States said on Monday it was establishing a new bilateral economic dialogue with Taiwan, an initiative it said was aimed at strengthening ties with Taipei and supporting it in the face of increasing pressure from Beijing.

Washington also said it had declassified six Reagan-era security assurances given to Taiwan, a move analysts said appeared intended to show further support for Taipei.

The announcements come at a time of increasing Chinese threats towards Taiwan, and when relations between Washington and Beijing have sunk to their lowest level in decades. U.S. President Donald Trump is campaigning for re-election in November with a tough approach to China among his key foreign policy platforms.

The State Department`s top diplomat for East Asia, David Stilwell, told a virtual forum hosted by the conservative Heritage Foundation the latest U.S. moves were not a policy shift, but part of a set of "significant adjustments" within Washington`s longstanding "one-China" policy.

Washington felt compelled to make these given the "increasing threat posed by Beijing to peace and stability" in a vitally important region and Beijing`s attempts to isolate Taiwan diplomatically while subjecting it to military threats.

"We will continue to help Taipei resist the Chinese Communist Party’s campaign to pressure, intimidate, and marginalize Taiwan," Stilwell said.

Taiwan`s Foreign Ministry expressed thanks for the show of support at a time when it said China was using military intimidation to damage peace and stability near Taiwan, and said it would continue to strengthen its defence capabilities.

Daniel Russel, a predecessor of Stilwell until early in the Trump administration, said the "Six Assurances" made to Taipei by the administration of former President Ronald Reagan had been a "loosely-kept secret" at best.

He said the decision to publish them looked like a compromise response to pressure from administration hawks to abandon "strategic ambiguity" — a long-standing policy of withholding a clear-cut U.S. commitment to defend Taiwan while still showing sufficient support to deter any Chinese military adventurism.

Among the assurances made in 1982, but never formally made public, are statements that the United States has not set a date for ending arms sales to Taiwan, nor agreed to prior consultation with Beijing on such sales, or to revise the Taiwan Relations Act that underpins U.S. policy towards the island.

The assurances, Stilwell said, "endure today."

Douglas Paal, a former U.S. representative to Taiwan, said the move appeared largely for show.

"My guess at this time is that Stilwell and the administration want to look tough ... So they are walking close to China`s red lines, but remain unwilling to cross them."

Stilwell said the economic dialogue would "explore the full spectrum of our economic relationship - semiconductors, healthcare, energy, and beyond, with technology at the core."

"While they may be interrelated, our relationship with Taiwan is not a subset of our bilateral relationship with the PRC," he said, referring to mainland China.

Monday`s announcements come several months after Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd , the world`s biggest contract chipmaker, announced plans to build a $12 billion factory in Arizona as the Trump administration stepped up efforts to cut back supply chains dependency on China.

Taiwan has been keen to negotiate a free trade agreement with the United States, but a large U.S. trade deficit, which Trump has been determined to reduce along with those of other trading partners, including China, has been an obstacle to this.

The delegation, including politicians, entrepreneurs, scientists and journalists, will meet Tsai on Thursday as part of their five-day trip. Vystrcil said his visit was a way to highlight Czech sovereignty as his country "should not listen to the orders of another country, especially a non-democratic country", a clear reference to Beijing. He said the Taiwan visit did not violate Czech's interpretation of the "one China" principle. "We are not against the People's Republic of China," he told reporters. "We also hope to have good, equal and mutually beneficial ties with the PRC, and similarly equal and mutually beneficial ties with Taiwan." Taiwanese parliamentary leader Yu Shyi-kun called Vystrcil's visit a diplomatic breakthrough for Taipei that helps prove its existence to the international community. "He does not yield to threats, intimidations and the lure of incentives... I believe that many countries will learn from Czech in the future," Yu said. Vystrcil has said his trip follows in the footsteps of late Czech president Vaclav Havel, the dissident leader of the 1989 Velvet Revolution which toppled communism in the former Czechoslovakia. Havel visited Taiwan in 2004, once he left office.

'I am Taiwanese': Czech speaker channels Kennedy in Taiwan speech

Taiwan has been in the news a lot lately, especially owing to the strained relationship with China, and the newly found global support.

But something even more uncanny happened recently. A three-year-old girl recently flew high with the kites, literally. The kid was holding on to the kite strings and was lifted above into the air with the kite.

The kid was not harmed in the process, and was reportedly participating in a kite festival on Sunday in Taiwan’s coastal town called Nanliao.

In the video, one can see her holding on to a long orange kite, and her being lifted off the group momentarily.

Watch: 3-year-old girl flung into the air by a humongous kite in Taiwan

Czech Senate speaker Milos Vystrcil will "pay a heavy price" for making an official trip to Taiwan and China will not sit idly by, the Chinese government`s top diplomat said on Monday, in a warning brushed off by Taiwan`s government.

Vystrcil arrived in Taipei on Sunday on a visit to promote business links with Taiwan, saying the Czech Republic would not bow to Beijing`s objections.

Speaking while in Germany, Chinese State Councillor Wang Yi said there would be retribution.

"The Chinese government and Chinese people won`t take a laissez-faire attitude or sit idly by, and will make him pay a heavy price for his short-sighted behaviour and political opportunism," China`s Foreign Ministry cited Wang as saying.

Wang said the Chinese government and people will not tolerate such "open provocation" by Vystrcil and the anti-China forces behind him, though gave no details of how exactly Beijing would react.

Speaking in Taipei, Taiwan Economics Minister Wang Mei-hua brushed off the criticism, though declined direct comment on China`s attack on Vystrcil.

"The Czech Republic and Taiwan are free and democratic countries which put great store on human rights. We have the same values as the Czechs," she told reporters, speaking before a joint business forum.

Vystrcil did not directly address China`s criticism of his visit in a brief speech at the same event, talking instead about how he was aiming to boost business relations.

"Freedom and democracy are the main basis of prosperity," he said, speaking through an interpreter.

Vystrcil is due to meet Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen later in his trip and will address Taiwan`s parliament before leaving on Friday.

China considers Taiwan a breakaway province ineligible for state-to-state relations.

Czech President Milos Zeman has sought closer business and political ties with China since taking office in 2013, but his efforts have been hit by failed investment plans and Czech wavering about allowing China`s Huawei Technologies to play a role in developing next-generation telecoms networks.

China says Czech senate speaker will pay 'heavy price' for Taiwan visit

Taiwan has been in the news a lot lately, especially owing to the strained relationship with China, and the newly found global support.

3-year-old girl flung into the air by a humongous kite in Taiwan

Taiwan’s defence ministry on Monday said that China’s military lacks the capability to launch a full-fledged assault on the country.

China views Taiwan as its sovereign territory and is amping up military activities. China has iterated the use of force to gain control of the island country, a sentiment which was echoed by Chinese President Xi Jinping last year as well.

Taiwan on the other hand is a democracy, and has rejected all claims by Beijing.

China's aggressive programmes

Under Xi, China’s military is undergoing a modernisation programme. As part of this, the country has inducted new stealth fighters, aircraft carriers, along with new supplementary equipment. Additionally, Chinese Air Force and navy have been rigorously undertaking exercises and missions close to Taiwan.

Reuters reported that Taiwan recently put out its report on countering Chinese ambition in the Taiwan strait. According to this report, the country’s defence ministry is carving out scenarios to counter Chinese activity. As part of this, they will set up blockades and seize offshore islands, so that no inlays are provided to the country.

The report claimed that China is working hard to improve its live fire rills, and by employing use of new technology and weapons.

"But on the operation of tactics and strategy toward Taiwan, it is still restricted by the natural geographic environment of the Taiwan Strait, and its landing equipment and logistics abilities are insufficient," it added.

"It still does not have the formal combat capability to fully assault Taiwan”, the report further said.

Taiwan steps up game

Under President Tsai Ing-wen, Taiwan has prioritised strengthening its defences. As part of this, Taiwan has improved its local production of defence paraphernalia, while buying more equipment from its largest arms supplier - the United States.
