However, Taiwan's armed forces are in a state of alert, especially in the aftermath of Russian invasion of Ukraine. The US had declared its support for Ukraine prior to the actual invasion but it faces allegations that its words have not translated into reality.&nbsp;

The United States has been carrying out such sailings about once a month, angering China, which views them as a sign of support for Taiwan, the democratically governed island that Beijing views as Chinese territory.

The Eastern Theatre Command of China's People's Liberation Army said that it monitored USS Sampson and issued warnings.

The defence ministry said this year's Han Kuang exercises, Taiwan's largest annual war games, would be split into two parts, in May and July.

The May part would partly be a tabletop exercise based on "various possible actions of the Chinese Communist Party in recent years to invade Taiwan, taking into account the lessons of the Russian-Ukrainian war", it said in a statement.

The ministry added that there will be five days of drills with Taiwanese soldiers taking part. There will be live-fire exercises.

The focus of the military exercise will be to attack &nbsp;enemy at sea, preserving combat forces and "integrating the total force of the whole people to support military operations", a reference to civil defence and reservist reforms that aim to improve Taiwan's ability to fight a war with China.

While Taiwanese officials have seen many parallels in the Ukraine war and their own situation, including having their own giant neighbour with territorial ambitions, they have also pointed to major differences.

There is a "natural barrier of the Taiwan Strait. This may put China in a relatively difficult position putting troops on the ground.

The posts show white hazmat suit-clad workers sealing the entrances of these buildings. &nbsp;

“This is so disrespectful of the rights of the people inside, using metal barriers to enclose them like domestic animals,” says a Chinese netizen on social media platform Weibo.&nbsp;

While other videos show residents complaining about the lack of food and other essentials. A six-minute video titled “The Voice of April”, containing a montage of voices recorded over the course of the 28-day lockdown became a victim of censorship.&nbsp;

All direct references to the video were taken down by Weibo, however some comments have managed to evade it.&nbsp;

"I can only say that if you don't even want to listen to just a small amount of real voices, then it is really hopeless," said one.&nbsp;

While another mentioning Dr. Li Wenliang said "Dr. Li, after two years nothing has changed, we still can't open our mouths, still can't speak." Dr. Li Wenliang passed away two years ago; he was one of the doctors who was reprimanded by the Chinese authorities for sharing “false” information about this infectious disease in late 2019. &nbsp;

Adding to the woes was a horrifying video of big green bags stuffed with cats and dogs. &nbsp;

Furthermore, city residents were also ordered to ‘throw away food they received from the government after complaints about quality issues,’ according to Bloomberg. Some neighborhoods allegedly received ‘moldy braised duck and meatballs or issues with the packaging of food.’&nbsp;

On Thursday, the hashtag calling for probe was trending on Weibo after residents complained of stomachaches and diarrhoea after eating food they’d received on Wednesday. &nbsp;

This week, the Global Times reported that three officials of a funeral home in Shanghai had been punished for ‘refusing to provide funeral service with the excuse of epidemic prevention,’ taking the total number to at least 15.&nbsp;

&nbsp;The alleged ill-treatment of Uyghurs has also been a point of contention between China and the West.&nbsp;

Last year, US&nbsp;President Joe Biden signed the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, which bans imports of good from Xinjiang. China’s deal with the European Union was also paused after sanctions were imposed last year.&nbsp;

Earlier, Chinese Defence Minister Wei Fenghe said, "If the Taiwan issue were not handled properly, it would have a damaging impact on Sino-US&nbsp;relations."&nbsp;

"China hopes to establish a healthy and stable major-country relationship with the US, and will also defend its national interests and dignity."&nbsp;

“Beijing demands that the United States stop military provocations at sea and not use the Ukrainian issue to discredit, frame, threaten and pressure China,” he added.

Taiwan's President Tsai-ing Wen had approved an additional $8.20 billion in military spending last year due to a rise in the number of Chinese planes breaching Taipei's air defence identification zone.

This will be utlised for on anti-ship weapons such as mass-produced homegrown missiles and ''high-performance'' ships.

Calling Taiwan, the champion of "asymmetric warfare," Tsai said modernising the country's military is a top priority.

There have been some calls in Taiwan to extend the four-month compulsory military service.

China has increased its military harassment of Taiwan in recent years, sending fighter jets to Taiwan almost daily.&nbsp;

Amidst the Russia-Ukraine war, former US president Donald Trump has claimed that Taiwan might be the next potential target, suggesting that the present conflict in Europe might give enough fodder for China to launch an attack.

In an interview with Fox News on Wednesday, Trump was quoted as saying, “Taiwan is going to be next. Just watch Taiwan;&nbsp;President Xi is watching with glee.”

He based his assumption on the Biden administration’s response to the Ukraine invasion.

"I do because they're seeing how stupid the United States is run. They're seeing that our leaders are incompetent. And of course, they're (China) going to do it. This is their time," he said, adding, “They (US) did nothing on Ukraine. They do nothing."

They also came a day after a visit by a delegation of former US security officials, a trip denounced by Beijing, which sees&nbsp;Taiwan&nbsp;as its territory and denounces any official ties the island has with other countries.&nbsp;

The Presidential Office said an initial probe showed the&nbsp;blackouts&nbsp;were caused by "an incident" at a power plant in southern Kaohsiung city. &nbsp;

While power supply at the president's office was normal, it said a scheduled live stream of Tsai's meeting with Pompeo was cancelled.

"President Tsai has instructed the cabinet and relevant agencies to clarify the cause of the incident... and resume power supplies as soon as possible," the statement read.

State-run Taipower said a malfunction occurred at Kaohsiung's Hsinta power plant, the island's third-largest coal-fired station which supplies around a seventh of&nbsp;Taiwan's power.&nbsp;

It then caused an ultra-high voltage station in neighbouring Tainan to trip, which led to the blackouts, it said.

The outage hit about 5.5 million homes across&nbsp;Taiwan, the company said, of which 4 million have since had power restored.

Economic minister Wang Mei-hua told reporters the Hsinta plant has been cut off from the power system after the incident, with hydro and other power plants being brought online to supply electricity.&nbsp;

TV footage showed police officers directing cars as traffic lights failed and some shops were forced to stay closed due to the lack of power.

Taiwan&nbsp;High-Speed Rail said an unspecified number of its trains were affected by the power outage.&nbsp;

Taiwan&nbsp;Railways Administration said some of its trains operating in southern Tainan, Pingtung and central Nantou have been delayed or suspended.&nbsp;

The island does occasionally experience large power outages, particularly during warmer seasons when demand spikes.&nbsp;

In 2017,&nbsp;Taiwan's economic minister resigned following an outcry over massive power failures across the island, affecting more than six million households.

The United States has a delegation comprising of former top US defense officials to Taiwan amid a looming threat from China.

Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen is leading the five-person delegation that is to meet with President Tsai Ing-wen and other top officials during the two-day visit.

Mullen, a retired Navy admiral who served as the top US military officer under former presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, is being accompanied by Meghan O'Sullivan, a former deputy national security adviser under Bush, and Michele Flournoy, a former undersecretary of defense under Obama.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has drawn fresh attention to China’s threat to use force to annex self-governing democratic Taiwan, which it claims as its own territory.

Democratic Taiwan has watched the Ukraine situation closely as it lives under constant threat of a Chinese invasion, with Beijing claiming sovereignty over the island and vowing to seize it one day,&nbsp;by force, if necessary.

Washington diplomatically recognizes Beijing over Taipei but it is also bound by Congress to sell Taiwan weapons to defend itself.

Tsai’s office said the delegation had been appointed by US&nbsp;President Joe Biden and the visit would permit “an in-depth exchange of views on Taiwan-US&nbsp;cooperation issues in various fields.”

Taiwan hopes the sides will “continue to deepen the steady development of Taiwan-US&nbsp;relations, continue to jointly maintain regional peace and stability, and continue to jointly contribute to global peace and prosperity,” it said in a statement.

The visit comes at a time when Taiwan has stepped up its alert level, wary of China taking advantage of a distracted West to move against it.

Taiwan Premier Su Tseng-chang told reporters earlier on Tuesday that the trip showed "the importance both of the Taiwan-US&nbsp;relationship and Taiwan's position" as well as the staunch US&nbsp;support for the island. "It's a very good thing," he added.

In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin dismissed the US delegation’s visit, saying it was “futile for the US&nbsp;to send anyone to demonstrate its so-called support for Taiwan.”

Wang told a daily briefing that China urges the US to honor past communiques signed with China, “stop all forms of official exchange with Taiwan, and handle Taiwan-related issues with caution so as to avoid further serious damage to the overall situation of China-US relations.”
