In a major show of force, China held its largest-ever military exercises around Taiwan on Thursday, a day after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to the island nation. Taiwan's defence ministry has confirmed that the Chinese military launched missiles from near Taiwan's Matsu islands as part of these exercises. It has also deployed fighter jets and warships.

Talking about the type of missiles that were fired, Taiwan said that a total of 11 Dongfeng ballistic missiles were launched into waters near Taiwan's northern, southern and eastern coasts "in several batches".&nbsp;The last time China shot missiles into waters&nbsp;surrounding Taiwan was in 1996.

Taiwan has slammed the military exercises as "irrational actions that undermine regional peace".

Experts say that the exercises are aimed at testing a blockade of the island.

"The aim was to test the precision of the missiles and their ability to deny an enemy access to or control of an area," Eastern Theater Command spokesman Senior Colonel Shi Yi said in a statement.

China, apparently, plans to continue the military exercises till Sunday.

"In the face of this blatant provocation, we have to take legitimate and necessary countermeasures to safeguard the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity," foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a briefing.

The exercises are being carried out on some of the busiest&nbsp;shipping routes in the world and Taiwan's Maritime and Port Bureau has asked ships to avoid all areas where the drills are being carried out.

AFP quoted an unnamed US official who said that the Ronald Reagan was accompanied by the USS Higgins, a destroyer part of its strike group.

The aircraft carrier and its group are "on a routine operation in the Western Pacific," a US official said on condition of anonymity.

The US Navy official said that the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli was operating east of Taiwan. The Ronald Reagan and the Tripoli have latest generation F-35 fighter jets on them.

The US has conveyed China that positioning of the two ships in the region was not linked to Pelosi's visit.

Pelosi's historic visit to Taiwan has angered China and Beijing claims the self-ruled island country as its own territory. China even says that it will not hesitate in using use force to unite the two territories one day, in case it is required.&nbsp;

Previously, on Monday night, 21 Chinese military aircraft flew into the southwestern part of Taiwan's air defence zone. In an immediate response, Taiwan deployed anti-aircraft missile systems and also sent an air patrol to monitor the situation.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Chinese state television on showed footage of military drills conducted by the PLA's Eastern Theatre Command near Taiwan. The CCTV showed military planes taking off, naval warships on patrol, military vehicles and missile weapons participating in drills.&nbsp;

Although, there is no confirmation regarding when the video was recorded.&nbsp;

The spokesperson of Eastern Theatre Command, Shi Yi, said that the exercises were aimed to "shock and deter against the major escalation of the United States' recent negative actions on the Taiwan issue, and a serious warning to the Taiwan independence forces."&nbsp;

Ahead of Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, China positioned a number of warships near the line dividing the Taiwan Strait and the country’s foreign ministry went on to call the visit “extremely dangerous”.

"The Chinese People's Liberation Army is on high alert and will launch a series of targeted military operations to counter this, resolutely defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and resolutely thwart external interference and 'Taiwan independence' separatist attempts," PLA spokesman Wu Qian said in an official statement according to reports by AFP.

However, in the opinion piece, Pelosi denied China’s allegations about the trip being “provocative” and said that the sole purpose was to demonstrate their strong commitment to self-ruled Taiwan.

“We take this trip at a time when the world faces a choice between autocracy and democracy. As Russia wages its premeditated, illegal war against Ukraine, killing thousands of innocents – even children – it is essential that America and our allies make clear that we never give in to autocrats.”

This was the first visit by any high-ranking US politician to Taiwan since 1997 when House speaker New Gingrich visited the region.

Citing excessive pesticide residue as the reason, China suspended some fish and fruit imports from Taiwan. Exports of natural sand which is used in construction have also been banned. Though from an economic perspective Taiwan might be able to sustain these bans, the military exercises have posed to be a bigger threat particularly because of their adverse impact on shipments. In addition to this, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office has declared that it would suspend imports of grapefruit, oranges, lemons and citrus fruits.&nbsp;
